About Forum Points

I think forum points means the points which we are getting on these forums only (if i am not wrong). But i saw some people with unmatched forum points with their posts for example for 13 total posts 230 forum points and 32 posts 486 forum points.
here are they include the articles and wiki's points also. or we can able to reduce/delete our number of posts. i noticed this in a very few members . How this came possible (for max 32*10=320 but its 486) ?
or is there any other way to change our name along with our points with 'zero' posts?
regards
Mahesh

That happens when they previously had an account with a different login-id and upon creation of a new one, requested the SCN team to "merge" both accounts. In the merging process sometimes the number of posts dont get migrated to the new one. Sometimes it does. And sometimes it takes time to do it.

• Reminder on forum pages about awarding points?

This isn't for me, since at this rate I will be a Level 4 in something over 600 years, but I was wondering if there could be some kind of discreet and short (clutter avoiding) but highly visible, reminder or announcement on the forum pages, themselves, about awarding points and the points system.
I realize that for most helpers here the satisfaction of helping someone, and maybe even getting a thank you, is enough, but a thank you can be made more meaningful with very little effort.
Many new members are oblivious, don't bother to read the Help and TOU, at least not very carefully, myself included when I first registered here. I see so many not bothering to award points I think, not out of indifference, but simply because they aren't paying attention. Often a question will be marked answered, but no points awarded - not simply to close off the thread, as in some cases - but when there has, in fact, been a genuine solution.
Could there be some form of gentle reminder, avoiding pushiness, at the top of each of the pages? I know there is already the "Solved and Helpful still available" in the actual thread, (and "Answered question, Unanswered question with answer points still available Unanswered question at the bottom of the page"), but I think for many who haven't understood the points system to begin with, these may not even register- or be very noticeable.
If this has already been discussed and dismissed please excuse.

We are looking at changes in the future to make it clearer to everyone (new and older users alike) on how the system works.
Thanks Eric; could this include, possibly, some sort of simple notice at the top of the forum pages (as described above, discreet, non-pushy, non-manipulative and, short)? I don't see how this would violate "other forms of encouragement are frowned upon." It would seem to me Apple has everything to gain by creating a more "encouraging" climate for helpers to do their work here. As it is, it must be somewhat frustrating at times.

Come in here more often if you feel you have the knowledge of how to offer the best answers.
I'm not sure what this is supposed to mean. With respect, A Brody, am I detecting some needless sarcasm, or am I misunderstanding? I certainly don't presume to offer the "best answers." Is making a simple suggestion presumptuous of me?
You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.
Agreed. But I wonder if the horse even knows the water is nearby.
People come in here with varying levels of free time. You can't expect everyone to be able to spare the time to mark a thread one way or another.
How much extra time does it take to mark a thread one way or the other? Wouldn't many more people do this only if they were made more aware?
Everyone would and should carefully read the lengthy Help and TOU. But human nature being what it is, most people, especially people interested in finding an answer to a more or less urgent question. are not going to take the time for that. They might, however, pay attention to a short notice.

You click on your own username and view your profile which will tell you how many points you have. At present it appears you don't have any.
For example, if you look at my profile...

• Gripe about the points system...

To whom it may concern,
I have a gripe about the points system used on the forums.Let me start by saying I like the general premise the points system offers but... I have noticed that I certain cases I will receive SEVERAL equally good, helpful, and valid replies to a post. My gripe is that when it comes time to award points I see a problem. In the above scenario AT LEAST one posts MUST get solved points while the others only get helpful points. I don't like this as oft times I believe EVERY answer deserves equal points. I would like to see the system at least allow for all posters to receive helpful points. I feel that in some cases this would keep things fair. Thank you.

• Why do paid Apple employees earn forum points & rankings?

Why do paid Apple employees earn forum points & rankings? I thought the points system was "to increase community participation". Giving points to people paid to be here and putting them in the rankings runs counter to that intent.

Hi, Jason -
No, I'm talking about the people with the silver Apple badges whose profiles say they're Apple employees.
At least some of them are paid to be in here, maybe others aren't and just come in here to be helpful on their own time, I guess I don't know. If you're paid, you don't need encouragement.
The only Apple employees who are paid to be here as their primary job function are the Hosts, the ones who display the purple apple badge.
Other Apple employees may post here. Usually it is on their own time, at which time they may or may not identify themselves as being an Apple Employee - if they do, they then display the silver apple badge.
On rare occasions Apple employees may post in an official capacity in order to address a specific need, but (historically, at least) this does not occur on a regular basis.
Yikes, I'd assume a company employee could provide useful info on the company's products. If an Apple employee doesn't give useful info...I hope that's someone who isn't working at Apple for long.
Apple has a broad and diverse enough product line that no one employee can possibly know it all.
Since most of the time a person who is identified as an Apple employee is posting on their own time, I see nothing wrong with thanking them the same way anyone else would be thanked.

• No information under link "Forum points" anymore

Hello,
formerly I saw under the link "forum points" in the thread contribution of a SDN member, which forum items were rewarded of this author. But this isn't working anymore. Meanwhile I only see all contributions of this member. I would like to know why the functionality "Forum points" was cancelled allthough it was very interesting to know which rewarded contributions a certain author has to offer?
Regards
Martin Lehmann

If you are referring to viewing the users "contributions" when you click that link - each user has to "select" to show that in their user profile.

I remember few months back it was working fine. Is it some bug in system?
Thanks,

By doing a little investigating, I discovered that your forum points in 2006 seemed to start around 8/26/2006. It was possible to do a query for points in date range.
It's a little tedious, but by giving date ranges you can bring up your 2006 results.

• SDN Forum points break up by forum & forum categories

Hi,
Didn't find any reference to this but would it be possible to add functionlity to break up forum points by forum categories, and then by forum themselves ? (I know I could export all the contributions to Excel, filter by Area and add subtotals but...) ;)
Trying not to be too narcissist... could you add the position in each of the relevant forum... ?
Best regards,

Hi Guillaume,
We are not very happy on how it is displayed where your points are comming from. There is a big project in the near future to redo the Business Card and that will also bring an overhaul to this area. Your suggestion is sound and we will see what we can do then.
You need a bit of patience there, Mark.

• 555 forum points ...

Hi SDNers,
Just realized that I have 555 forum points.
Here an SDN Trivia question:
10 points for the one who can explain how I can have uneven number of forum points when all we are giving out are 10, 6 or 2 points?
As this is the Other SDN Qestions section this is not even off topic
All the best, Mark.

hi,
i have got 145 pts because I once got 1 point for my initial posting. this said, actually everyone who ever posted should have an odd number of forum points. I checked this and found people with an even number of points. there are two possibilities for this a) they didn't get their initial point or b) there are other ocassions where you get an odd number of extra points.
instead of receiving 10 points for this great explanation I'd prefer to get something like 3.1415926 points if possible. this would really be a unique gratification.
regards,
anton
