Advanced server DNS set up

Heya Guys,
I think I have worked out why I can get things to work now. I have been able to set up many standard servers with no problems at all using ISP DNS but I keep failing when I try to set up advanced server running its own DNS.
Previously I have been setting up the DNS with local IP to server.pushmymail.com.au
ie...
10.0.1.2 - server.pushmymail.com.au
When the whole time I should of been using the public IP
124.170.168.106 - server.pushmymail.com.au
As my router is set to pass anything from that public IP through to the server with the local IP.
Am I right in thinking this? I will try it out tonight when I get home.
Cheers.

HI,
I kind withdraw my question. I was reading apples server resources and finally found some info that pretty much explianed it to me.

  • Two Xserves running 10.5 Server and setting up DNS...

    Hello.
I have two Xserves (a G5 and a new Intel), both with fresh installs of 10.5 Server on them.
Xserve #1 not going to be hosting any external services (FTP, web, email) and only housing internal, mission critical & confidential data (the server is set up with a mirror RAID on the OS drive as well as mirror RAID on the storage drives + nightly tape backups for offsite storage). Right now there are no plans for enabling iCal on this server as we're trying to keep the server as basic as possible (as we can afford zero downtime on this server), but if the initial setup of 10.5 requires configuration at first run to allow this type of thing, I'd like to deal with it now so as to keep my options open (as I know iCal on 10.5 requires Open Directory enabled).
Xserve #2 is going to host FTP (for external clients) and internal file sharing for the design/production department (basically, for transferring files back and fourth between departments, so no data via this share will be "critical" as it's only temporarily on the server and will always exist in other locations). Even though this server will not host "critical" data, it will share the same backup/RAID scheme as Xserve #1.
So, I'm curious as to how I set up DNS in this situation (so we can associate a domain name to our static IP address). We already have our main domain setup via 3rd-party hosting service (for web & email as we do not want to bring these services in-house), but we're purchasing a second domain that will be associated with company (via a static IP, so we can give a domain name instead of IP address for people needing to connect to the FTP server, make it easier for employees to remember the address for remote connections, etc.).
Because Xserve #2 is going to be hosting FTP, would it make sense to setup DNS on this server and not set it up on Xserve #1? Also, and this could just be me being paranoid, but because Xserve #1 will be housing "critical & confidential" data I want to eliminate as much contact with the outside world as possible with this server, so this is another reason I feel Xserve #2 should have DNS running instead.
Oh, and not sure if this makes any difference, but between the WAN and the LAN is a SonicWALL firewall and currently it deal with port forwarding, etc. depending on what services are being requested from the WAN (ie. remote machine connections, FileMaker remote connections, etc.).
    Any advice would be appreciated!
    Regards,
    Kristin.

There's a couple of things in your post I don't understand:
the server is set up with a mirror RAID on the OS drive as well as mirror RAID on the storage drives
How are you doing this? Both XServes support only three internal drives and two mirrors require 4 drives. Where does the fourth drive come into play?
I'm curious as to how I set up DNS in this situation
There are numerous ways of doing this, but with a single static IP address your best bet is to leave DNS where it is - managed by your hosting provider. Just add a record in the domain zone (e.g. ftp.yourdomain.com) that has the IP address of the public interface your SonicWall firewall. You don't need a separate domain for this. You also don't need to setup internal DNS for this (although you may need internal DNS if you're running Open Directory.
Because Xserve #2 is going to be hosting FTP, would it make sense to setup DNS on this server and not set it up on Xserve #1?
Assuming you're referring to setting up a DNS server - use them BOTH. Make one of the servers the primary server (I'd pick the internal-only server for this) and set the other server to be a slave (so it copies all the zone data from the primary server). That way you have a replica of the data to provide additional resilience.

  • Modem AEBS Laptop. Which of those should have DNS server details set?

    Hi,
I have a modem which is connected to an AEBS. And the AEBS connects via air to my laptop. Which of these three things should have the DNS server IP addresses, supplied by my ISP, set in them, and which shouldn't?
The modem has a web page based set up, which has a DNS set up available. It seems to have a mind of its own and ignore my settings -- resets to what it was before (which isn't the case of other settings for the modem)
The base station in its set up has DNS server IP address fields, which was already filled in (automatically possibly -- I can't remember) with my ISP's DNS addresses.
And there's the places for DNS addresses in the Network in System Preferences. This was empty but I've now put in my ISPs settings there. Either way, with or without, doesn't seem to make any difference.
Can anyone tell me where there is info online about where to put DNS info correctly for a modem > AEBS > computer set up please? Or maybe someone knows?
    TIA,
    John.

I never set the DNS servers on any client computer, Mac or Windoze. Note that in the DNS Servers: section of the Network Preferences it says (Optional). I suggest you leave that space blank.
Similarly, if you are using your AEBS as your gateway router and your Internet connection to your is configured Using DHCP there is no need (and no benefit) to predefining the DNS servers.
If you have a situation where you must pre-set the DNS servers IP addresses, then I would do it only in the AEBS.
BTW, I assume this is in conjunction with your other thread about the AEBS crapping out every few hours while downloading files. Remember that DNS is used only to resolve names to IP addresses as in each time you call up a different URL. DNS doesn't enter the picture in the middle of any other kind of transaction. I suspect that DNS is not your problem in this case.

  • Do you think I have my DNS set up correctly?

    Hi
I have bought a macmini server running the latest OSX software. I plan to host my own website and email from it. My ISP has given me a static ip address and I plan to set up my advanced DNS settings as follows, though I have used fake url & ip address for this question:
    A Records: Host Name - myserver.example.com / IP Address - 215.40.70.84
    DNS "MX" Records: Points to - 215.40.70.84 / Priority - 1
My question is, would the above enable my url to point to my new server and deliver emails to it?
    Thanks!

    - Could you expand on VPN end-point capabilities? I googled this but the explanations are a bit too technical for me. BTW I am running a 2wire BT2700 router.
VPNs can be forwarded via NAT (which gets ugly) to a server, or the gateway itself can include a VPN server.
If you connect directly to a server (port-forwarding everything at the gateway), you have to get all of the network traffic through NAT, and NAT can get ugly for a couple of reasons, and the server must be booted and working or you won't have an end-point for the VPN connection. (VPNs tend to seek security through various means including the use the originating IP address, and NAT seeks to mess with the originating IP address.)
With a VPN connection into a VPN server in the gateway, your local client is effectively similar to a client directly connected on the target network.
I'd be surprised if that 2Wire widget had a VPN server, but check the documentation. It does look to be possible to [switch (some?) 2Wire 2700 gateways into bridged mode|http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r21066151-2wire-2700HGB-bridge-mode-simple -tutorial] and place a server-grade firewall behind it. (A bridge is comparatively transparent to an IP connection.)
I often suggest a VPN, and for various reasons. Remote access into the LAN for maintenance and general access to LAN-local resources and particularly for various operations from untrusted networks, and as a path for remote support. AFP or SMB and other protocols are best kept behind the gateway, for instance. And the VPN scales as your network scales (you're able to get directly to any box, and not hopping around via an internal VPN server host), and a VPN-capable gateway keeps the riffraff at the edge of your network.
    - I agree on split horizons. Do you know of any websites with user friendly explanations of this?

  • DNS set-up for multiple servers?

    I need some DNS advice....
I am replacing our old OS Leopard server (that provided web hosting, email, file serving, dns, etc.) with four new Mac Mini Servers (Maverick) to distribute the services. We had an issue on the old machine's fileserver service that brought all services to a halt and then the employees to a halt.
Since one machine was the central hub of everything it was easy to set-up the DNS to point to it for everything. Now that I have four machines (one of them serving the DNS) I need to know how to point to the other services. The DNS user interface only allows me to input DNS infer for that particular server. How do I add names and address in the DNS to point to the other three servers?
    Thanks in advance.
    Brian

To add to MrHoffman's advice, as long as the two machines have different IP addresses, they will only know about each other if you tell them.
For example, server.gilliland.com is running Leopard and is at address 172.16.0.10.  You want a new device to also be know as server.gilliland.com but don't want to shut the other one down.  Ok, give it another address, 172.16.0.11 for example and define on it DNS that points server.gilliland.com to 172.16.0.11.  As far as the new server knows, it is server.gilliland.com and is start of authority for the gilliland.com domain.  The old server thinks the same thing.  But as long as you don't tell either about the other, they will live happily in the belief that they are the one and only server.gilliland.com server.
Now, as longs are you are already relying on DNS (meaning nothing is linked via IP), then you can completely build you entire new OD cluster while the old systems is still running.  DHCP will tell everyone to use DNS from the old server.  You new servers will be configured with new DNS and they will all be in on the new secret.  When you are ready to make the migration to the new cluster, change DHCP and push new DNS out to the clients.  As long as they connect by name (server.gilliland.com) they will not miss a beat.
Depending on your services, this can be done with almost no downtime.  Got lots of data?  rsync it.  The biggest headache you will have is likely the mail migration.  That is a torture I wish on no one.  Make sure you have a backup plan, a regression plan, a head for the border plan, and then an alternate plan for when all of those plans fall apart.  I also suggest closing your port forwards on the firewall when you decide to move mail.  This will allow you to validate the migration without new mail coming in.  Thus, if something goes wrong, but not completely "the sky is falling" wrong, then you can restore the old server, open the firewall, and live to try again another day.

  • Web configuration lost when upgrading to advanced server admin

    Hello,
after setting correctly the basic configuration, and setting the web servives, we did the upgrade to advanced option and then we focues to other apple problems like getting network connection, starting xgrid, etc), and then is when we realized that the web settings, server name, etc were lost when we moved to the advanced server admin.
    grrrrr!
    any idea?
    thanks

I would most emphatically recommend that you get your boss to sign off on you having no liability nor culpability for any results of work he expects you to do "on the side".
People study and learn for years - and appropriately so ! - in order to accomplish this kind of work effectively and efficiently.
If you are learning and have a non-production environment to work with and potentially wipe & reinstall where need be, then by all means, go for it (start learning).
But otherwise your boss should accept that s/he is getting what they're paying for, and since it is nothing, they should be prepared for that.
It is neither technically nor professionally advisable to foist a task such as this on someone and expect the result(s) to be that of a trained professional in that field. The fundamental concern is the disconnect there, and the unacceptable risk this situation could put you in, either now or in the future.
To the matter at hand, I generally recommend strongly against an upgrade, as compared to a (verified good) backup, wipe and reinstall and configure from the outset as "Advanced."
For computer management, you will want to run your server as an Open Directory Master,
and as such, you must must must have verified working DNS lookup(s) for your server's FQDN, prior to proceeding with re-installing & reconfiguring it.

  • Strange behaviour of OS X Server DNS with IPv6 reverse zones

I am running a full IPv4 / IPv6 dual stack setup across several machiens including a server (OS X 10.9.1 / OS X Server 3.0.2). I also have IPv6 Internet access via TunnelBroker and have a /64 prefix assigned to me. All my systems have valid and correct IPv6 addresses (not temporary ones) from the range denoted by that prefix.
I have setup IPv4 and IPv6 addresses for all my systems in OS X Server DNS and that works fine. However, when I add an IPv6 address for a system, the DNS server (or maybe the server GUI) insists on creating a reverse zone for the /127 version of the address. This means I pretty much have a separate reverse zone for every system, which seems crazy to me. it is especially annoying as I have another DNS server where all my zones are defined as slave zoes (for availability reasons) and thsi makes the process of addign a new IPv6 host somewhat tedious. I tried pre-creating a properly named reverse zone for the /64 prefix but the DNS server would not use that and still persists in creating these strange zones.
    Here is a (fictitous example)...
    My /64 prefix is 2001:fd0:f19:2ab::/64
I have a system with an address of 2001:fd0:f19:2ab:7e6d:62ff:fe8a:a84c
I add this to OS X Server DNS and it created the reverse DNS zone:
    4.8.a.a.8.e.f.f.f.2.6.d.6.e.7.b.a.2.0.9.1.f.0.0.d.f.0.1.0.0.2.ip6.arpa
whereas I would expect it to instead add it to the zone
    b.a.2.0.9.1.f.0.0.d.f.0.1.0.0.2.ip6.arpa
    if that zone already exists.
Has anyone else noticed this? Or do you have it working as one might expect?

    Chris..
I, too, have the same problem.  I take issue with much of the OS X "Server" after it has been so completely dummed down that it is virtually useless for anyone that would actually like to utilize it as an actual, as the name implies, "SERVER."  I won't get into all of the details of everything that drives me crazy with Apple's decisions here but, suffice it to say, I am EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTED with Apple more than ever.  They should, at a minimum, offer a full-fledged server like they used to have, for an additional price, for people that need more than a nice looking interface and a worthless box.
That being said, the DNS server, like the rest of the OS X Mavericks Server, is dummed down to the point of allowing very little customization.  Short of using the command line, which I have decided to do (I scrapped the OS X server all together, and just set up BIND, openLDAP, DHCP, Quagga, etc. from the CLI just like I do with all of my Linux servers), there is not much you can do to get the correct prefixes to show up in IPv6 reverse zones.  The reason is that when you enter the forward record, the interface does not give an option to enter the prefix.  So, it seems that for EACH AND EVERY v6 entry (AAAA record) you have (or at least every 10 entries), you will get a separate reverse zone.
To be completely honest, I don't even know why they included IPv6 zones in this implementation because it is totally out of compliance with the RFCs and, obviously, will not provide proper and correct reverse lookups.  How could it? As you pointed out above, with a /64 prefix, you're getting a 31 digit long reverse zone (which, btw, is a /124)...***???  I've never heard of such a thing.  There should be 16 digits in a /64, 12 in a /48, 8 in /32 and so on.
I don't think it is anything to do with your using a tunnel broker -- all of our systems are native IPv6 and all reverse queries to the Mac Server fail.
I can tell you how to use the CLI to manually enter the zones with the serveradmin tool, if you like, but my advice is to just move to a full fledged BIND implementation .... and, if you want some type of interface other than the console, use something like Webmin which has a GREAT DNS zone interface...and it also keeps up with the RFC compliance.
Just message me back if you'd like the shell commands.  I hate to say this, it literally pains me, but I administer a ton of servers (physical and virtualized)... roughly 1000 +- to be exact...and WINDOWS Server has a DNS server that is so much further ahead and ADVANCED than Mac, it is disgusting.  In fact, we are running 12 Win Server 2012R2 Active Directory Domain Servers, each running synchronized DNS records and even with over 250,000 DNS records, it works like a champ.  Still, our primary and fail-safe DNS servers are all BIND v9.  Like I said, it is awful to say that about Mac, but dude, they need to wake up and either get back to the real-deal systems or just get out of the advanced product arena all together.  (one exception...my new MacPRO is AWESOME and the most advanced piece of computing equipment money can buy for the price...so kudos there)
Sorry about the rant, but when i read your post, I was reminded how frustrated I am at all of this nonsense.
    Take care...and good luck.

  • Oracle 8.1.7 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server

We have a client that is running the 8.1.7 server on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server. The database service is set to start automatically, but every time the server reboots the database service says that it is started, but when we try to access the database we get a message that says "Oracle not available". After we go into the DBA Studio and manually open the database everything works fine (until we have to reboot again). Are there any known issues with 8.1.7 and 2000 Advanced Server? Is there some configuration setting that we could be missing that will get the database to automatically start like it is supposed to?
Thanks in advance for any help,

They are using a static IP and the network was all setup before we installed Oracle. I think we have the local System account starting the service. Is the right to start the database something we need to assign to the local System account or should we be using a different account?
I don't remember ever having to go into the service and change anything on any system we have setup before, but this is the first 2000 Advanced Server we have done.

This tells me that something is not right with your basic Java VM environment.
From the command prompt, can you type:
C:\> setTo see if you have the environment variable JAVA_HOME set?
Perhaps this is set to some old (or bogus?) directory name?
In the same command shell, try unsetting it by doing:
C:\> set JAVA_HOME=with nothing after the equals sign.
Then try running JDeveloper's jdev.exe again using:
    C:\> \jdev\jdev\bin\jdev.exe

  • OS X Server DNS Best practice?

    Hello,
I am having a little trouble with my OS X Server DNS.
I have set up server.example.com and that works fine but now from my internal network I cannot get to:
    example.com or
    www.example.com
example.com is a website I have set up on a remote webserver.
My records currently look like this.
    Primary Zone: example.com
    server.example.com - machine
    server.example.com - nameserver
    Reverse Zone: 50.168.192.in-addr.arpa
    192.168.50.25 - reverse mapping
    server.portalpie.com - nameserver
My webserver for example.com has an IP of something like 175.117.174.19
How would I get example.com and www.example.com to point to 175.117.174.19?
    Thanks

Hello, DNS for simple name resolution work correctly for internal and external name. Internal it is .lan and external .fr
I think there is perhaps SRV entry to add.
Please do not use .LAN as your top-level domain.  That's not a valid top-level domain right now, but it's also not reserved for this sort of use.  Either use a real and registered domain, or a subdomain of a real and registered domain, or — if you squat in a domain or try to use a TLD that's not registered — expect to have problems as new top-level domains are added.  At the rate that the new TLDs are coming online from ICANN, I'd expect to see .LAN get allocated and used, too.    .GURU, .RIP, .PLUMBING and dozens of other new top-level domains are already online, and probably thousands more are coming online.
SRV records are not related to accessing the Internet, those are service records which some applications use to access certain network services; they're a way to locate a target server and a port for specific applications — CalDAV does use an SRV record, but that's not related to the original posting's issues.   If you're having issues similar to the OP, then access your server and launch Terminal.app from Applications > Utilities and verify local DNS with the (harmless, diagnostic) command-line command:
    sudo changeip -checkhostname
Enter your administrative password.  That command might show a one-time informational message about the use of sudo, and will usually then show some network configuration information about your server, and then an indication that no problems were found, or some indications of issues.  If there are errors reported, your IP network or your local DNS is not configured correctly — I'm here assuming a NAT network.
I usually do this DNS set-up in a couple of steps.  First, get private DNS services configured and working.  This is always the first step, right after assigning the IP addresses.   It's just too convenient not to have DNS running on your local LAN, once you get to the point of having and running a server.   Then for external access for (for instance) web services, get port-forwarding working at the firewall/NAT/gateway box working; get your public static IP address mapped to the server's internal, private, static IP address.  Then get the public DNS configuration to resolve your external domain name to your public static IP address.
My preference is to use separate DNS domains or a domain and a subdomain inside and outside.  Using real and registered domains, and not using any domains associated with a dynamic DNS provider — that's possible, but a little more tricky to configure.  This internal and external domain usage simplifies certain steps, and it avoids having to deal with cases where — for instance — some of your services have public IP addresses — such as a mail server you might be using — and other services might be entirely private.  If you have one domain (or subdomain) be public and one be private, then you don't have to track external IP address changes in your private DNS services; public DNS has just your public stuff, and your private domain (or subdomain) has just your private stuff.  Also obviously easy to tell what's inside your firewall, and what's outside, using this.
If you're thinking of running a publicly-accessible mail server, you'll need additional steps in the public DNS.
Little of the above probably makes sense, so here's a write-up on configuring DNS on OS X Server.   All of the Server.app stuff works about the same for general DNS setup, too.  More recent Server.app is usually more flexible and capable than the older Server.app stuff, though.

Do you have experience installing Oracle db on UNIX? It seems to me that you did not even create a group and user with proper rights. Those shell scripts couldn't run.
