Advice Needed on LR/PS Workflow

Hi,
I'm running Windows XP SP2 with Lightroom 1.3.1 and Photoshop CS. Over the past several years, I've established a comfortable workflow for processing my images in PS. I have recently added LR to my world and am now trying to get a handle on how to integrate it into the work process I use.
Right now I use PS to do all the normal post-processing: using layers, levels and color balance to clean up images (skin, hair, blemishes, etc), adjust exposure/contrast, lighten eyes/teeth, apply one or more tones, etc. Pretty normal, common stuff, as best as I can tell.
But now I find that some of these steps are so much easier in LR, e.g., modifying exposure and contrast, using presets to adjust tones. So I'd like to use LR to do the steps that is does so well and with such ease, while using PS to do what it does best.
I know what LR and PS are each designed to do: LR, among other things, can be used to make adjustments to exposure, WB, tones; PS to make edits at the pixel level.
Here's where I'm stuck - how to get the two pieces of software to streamline my work process, without having to duplicate work or change my process.
What I want to do is be able to take an image, make some initial exposure modifications, then cleanup up the image one time, then apply one or more develop presets to create multiple version of a single cleaned up image (B&W, color, duo-tone, etc.) and then make some final edits to it.
Using the two tools, here's how I see my process:
1. Make initial exposure, WB adjustments in LR on my RAW image.
2. Edit a TIF copy in PS so I can do all my cleanup one time on a master copy of the image.
3. Now I'd like to bring the master image back into LR so I can apply develop presets to modify the tone, colors, convert to B&W, etc.
4. Final step is to make one last set of modifications to image in PS, like whiten eyes or teeth, add copyright logo, etc.
I know that once I bring the TIF back into LR (Step 3 above) I do not have the same controls in the Develop Module (e.g., WB control is now -100 to +100 instead of color temperature) that I did with the RAW image and the presets that I want to do not behave the same way. This is my first hurdle.
Sorry for the long-winded note, but I wanted to explain as best I could my process and how I'd like to use LR and PS to enhance my process. I'm looking for some advice on how I might best use these two wonderful tools in the process that I described above without having to duplicate any of my steps (like create multiple versions of the image in LR and having to take multiple versions of the image into PS to perform the same edits to clean up the image)
Ideal world: I move back and forth between LR and PS with a RAW image, passing changes I make back into each software package as I work on each step in my process. Is this doable somehow? Do I need to upgrade to PS CS3?
Thanks in advance for any advice or ideas you experts can provide.
Steve

Lightroom 2.0 allows editing of RAW images in Photoshop without creating a .tiff or other copy. You can even open files from Lightroom as Smart Objects. See this video for further information: http://creativesuitepodcast.com/index.php?post_id=323482

  • ADVICE needed - FCPX projects -- FCP7 workflow (not X27)

    Hey all,
    I need some sage advice.
I have been working on a huge project for over a year now on location in Bosnia.
All footage has been shot on the 5D mrk3 and c300 cameras.
    My FCPX Workflow
While on location I was importing / organizing / syncing / labeling and adding subtitles into FCPX.
    - I have each camera in it's own event and project.
    - I have the video synced (using Plural Eyes) with the Zoom audio files.
    - I have added subtitles from my translator using Annotation edit.
    - I have then used the TimeCode generator to give the entire sync'ed, subbed "master timeline" a consistent reference throughout and so I always know exactly where that clip lives in the "master timeline" once I start editing.
    - Lastly I have added the "file name" using the Text "right" generator in FCPX so I always know what day it is.
I would then create a separate compound clip for all the video from that day, the external audio, and the subtitles. (so that is 3 Compound clips. (see pics below)
Add the TimeCode and right text generators...
Select all and make it all a C. Clip... I did this so nothing would shift.. the Subs would be in sync and the timecode would always be the same no matter how and where the footage was used....
    My Question / Challenge
OK so now my producers have found an editor and this editor needs to edit this project in FCP 7.
I am in Chicago they are in Berlin... I will join them in Berlin but want to do as much prep work in the 1.5 months leading up to my travel date here in Chicago.
They have all the footage and FCPX projects and events and now need to get them into FCP 7
the app X to 7 does not import FCPX generators and has some quirks importing text (I am not sure how it will handle my subs as we are just beginning the import / converting process)
What I don't want is to loose all the good work that I have done on my end to be organized and I absolutely NEED the subtitles included with the sync'd footage.
Does anyone have any advice and / or know where I can turn to figure out what to do in this situation?
the viewer with subs, timecode, and file stamp
    the timeline broken apart
    the timeline as compound clips

    @ Russ H
Yeah I thought of that too...
Just using the flatened verssion as a reference file that can be enabled and disapbled as necessary hoever like you pointed out that is "not ideal" AND would actually be pretty time consuming as I am dealing with
45 Days of footage totalling 200+ hours...
So it actually takes about an hour to render and export each 3-4 hour days of flattened footage.
But that may be the best soltuion of the not so great options I have in front of me...
    @Meg The Dog
Thanks, and yes I will be doing all of that sans the assistant editor.
One of the largest issues is that I am not a FCPX expert so I can't do that...
AND the budget is a bit tight to hire a second editor for this job PLUS it is in Berlin (I am in Chicago)
So while I will be there for the editing process the lead / post time is going to be pretty tight and I need to make sure that all the footage is online, sync'd, subbed and ready to go once I step off the plane.
I agree that in an ideal situation your suggestion would be best if the budget allowed for it...

  • Mac Pro RAID configuration advice needed to address photography workflow

I am a semi-professional photographer and I am moving off a Windows machine and over to a Mac Pro.
I am waiting for the new Mac Pro to arrive and have purchased (4) 500GB SATA drives to replace the 250GB drive the system will arrive with.
I am considering setting up drive #1 as a stand alone boot drive. The second and third drives would be set up in a RAID 0 config and the 4th drive set up as a RAID 1 drive which would mirror the content on my RAID 0 set of drives to automatically backup the content on drives 2 & 3.
I think it would be beneficial if I describe my image processing workflow briefly so that you can understand why I am considering this RAID configuration (I've never set up a RAID configuration in the past so this is all new to me).
    Image Processing Workflow
It isn't uncommon for me to return from a photo shoot with an 8GB Compact Flash card full (approx 750 8mb RAW files).
    1) I plan on uploading my card to the boot drive (#1) where I would hold them temporarily.
    2) I would sort thru the images and trash 80% immediately in most cases.
    3) Next I would open up the "keepers" and do the initial post processing in Adobe RAW and save them to drives 2 & 3 (the RAID 0 set).
    4) Further post processing (the heavy lifting and the most taxing operations in Photoshop and associated filters) would take place as I access these files from the RAID 0 set of drives.
    5) All of my files would be mirrored to drive 4 as I work them. Once post-processing is complete I would copy the files from drive #4 (RAID 1)to an additional external 500GB drive for archiving purposes and then eventually delete the files from drive #1 and the RAID 0 set.
    6) Once drive #4 (and the external drive) is nearly filled I would pull both and archive them and replace both with fresh drives.
Is there anything wrong with taking this approach? Can a single drive be set up in a RAID 1 configuration to mirror a set of drives in a RAID 0 configuration?
Is there anything else I should be considering?
Thanks for any assistance you guys can provide! I appreciate it!!

For the purposes of 500GB drives in RAID, I would go with WD RE2. they format to 465GB and performance falls off @ 65% and beyond anyway.
I even "short-stroke" drives to just 60% and then stay within 1/3 full - if I want to insure the maximum I/O.
Memory: 4GB is pretty much minimum but using more than 8GB isn't efficient. Ideal: 4 x 2GB.
Shame that the Hitachi 1TB drive costs over $399 for now, fast and might be better than 10K Raptor. There are also 750GB drives for $249, but the RE2 isn't quite ready to ship.
Never want to get into using 75% or more usually, though large (8-20 drives) RAIDs can hold sustained I/O for video editing and multiple streams.
One 750GB or 1TB (930GB formatted, 800GB "usable") might make sense.
How about a SATA drive case w/ hot-swap. Think of 1TB "floppy" if you will :-)) Unlimited archiving of projects.
All you want is an inexpensive eSATA 1x 2-channel PM controller and any cases. Two drives that you can use drive trays as needed.
there are also 'spare' drive sleds if you want to have the option of popping a drive out, and use it internally. $29 each or $49 a pair.

Vista 64-bit can or does work quite well now on Mac Pro... if you ever get into a jam and just need to. SP1 by end of the year will even have more support for UEFI 2.0 (Apple uses Intel EFI 1.1).

  • Advice Needed: Mac-based Video Workflow

    Greetings all,
My congregation is thinking of purchasing an iMac to use to produce a video of each Sunday's message. I use a MacBook Pro and am a strong proponent of getting a Mac for this purpose. I'm in charge of researching the purchase. So, I'm posting here to bounce some ideas off everyone and see if anyone has any experience that could help me.
So, typically a Sunday message lasts 15-20 minutes. We're looking for a camera that shoots in HD and stores the video as editable files on the camera. Then, as soon as the message is done, we'll have our video operator transfer the video files to the iMac, add some titles, and then export it in HD for posting to Vimeo. We want to find a workflow that goes quickly so the operator doesn't have to stay around forever waiting for the export process.
As far as I know, that rules out AVCHD codec with iMovie, right? I understand it requires a lengthy decompression time, so that even a real-time capture of HDV would be faster!
    So, my questions are twofold:
    1) Does anyone know a camera that records HD files that could be transferred very quickly into iMovie?
    and
    2) Is a new iMac fast enough to export a 15-20 minute HD movie in 15-30 minutes?
    Thanks so much!

Well, we want to go to HD. I'm well versed in the normal process of video making. I use a Canon HV20. I've just been asked to make the entire workflow happen in a much shorter time, since we have to have it complete before folks leave from the church. I was hoping we could add titles and the like in iMovie and go to HD, but that doesn't seem like a feasible option in the time window I have. I think I'm leaning toward getting a Sanyo Xacti HD1010 that records as MPEG files in the H.264 codec. Then we can just forgo the titling and simply place a raw file up to Vimeo and still have it be HD.
The only thing I'm worried about now is staying under the 1 GB file limit with native shooting on a camera like that. You can shoot 1280×720 video on that camera at 9 mbits/sec, but I think for a Sunday sermon crossing the 15-16 minute threshold, we'd be over the 1 GB file limit that Vimeo and YouTube have. Yeesh. It seems there's not "fast" way to get HD video online. It takes a little bit more time, but that's to be expected with the higher quality. It doesn't bother me for my home movies!

  • Advice needed: Efficient way to scan users

    Hi all,
I wish to know the efficient way to scan users in Lighthouse. I need to write a workflow that checkout all the users and perform some updates. This workflow should run everyday at midnight.
I have created a scanner myself. Basically what It did are:
    1. call FormUtils.getUsers method to return all users' name into a variable.
    2. loop through this list and call a subprocess workflow to process every user. This subprocess checks out a user view, performs updates, and then checks in view.
This solution is not efficient at all since it causes my JVM to be Out of Memory. (1G RAM assigned to JVM with about 78,000 users)
Any advice is highly appreciated. Thank you.
    Steve

Ok...I know understand what you are doing and why you need this.
A long, long, long time ago (back in 3.x days) the deferred task scanner was really bad. Its nightly scan would scan ALL users each time. This is fine when your client had 4k users...but not when it has 140k users.
Additionally, the "set deferred task" function had problems with two tasks with the same name "i.e. disable resource" since it used the name as the xml object name which can not be duplicated.
soooo, to beat this I rewrote the deferred task handler to allow me to do all of this. Part of this was to add a searchable field called 'nextTaskDate' on the user object. After each workflow this 'date" is updated so it is always correctly populated with the users "next deferred task date"
each night the scanner runs and querys all users with a nextTaskDate of today. This then gives us a result set that we can iterate over instead of having to list each user and search for tasks. It's a billion times faster.
Your best bet is to store the task date in miliseconds and make your query a "all users with next task date BEFORE now"...this way if the server is hosed you can execute tasks you may have missed.
We have an entire re-usable implmentation framework that we have patented (of which this code is a part) that answers most of these types of issues you are bringing up. It makes these implementations much much simpler, faster, scalable and maintainable.
    this make sense?

I went to apple store, they do not want to sell iphone to me unless I sign AT&T 2 years plan. I thought AT&T has locked the phone and users must subscribe in order to use it. Why Apple store still not allow me to buy?
Please advice, if I want to buy online iphone for my brother, do I or my brother have obligation to sign out AT&T plan?
One more advice needed, I found the shipment takes weeks, do I have option to arrange for self-collection?

I'm guessing English is not your first language. It's possible that you misunderstood them. Apple Store employees won't refuse to sell you an iPhone and you don't have to sign up for service in the store.
    Well that's not entirely true.
Apple Stores have been instructed not to sell you an iPhone if any of the following is true:
    • You state that you will not be signing up with AT&T.
    • You do not have an ID from a US state, also indicating you will not be activating with AT&T
    • You do not have a credit card
For example, I've seen US Apple Store managers refuse to sell iPhones to European residents because of the AT&T lock-in.

  • Video intensive work on Mac Pro? Advice Needed

    Hi everyone,
I've been originally saving up for a while now for an iMac 24" as it offers the best specification price wise. But now I leaning on the Mac Pro and therefore need some advice.
I know that there are alot of posts on advice - need to buy mac etc. so therfore I would really appreciate if I am afforded some help.
I am mostly going to do ALOT of video encoding (via handbrake) and I am looking for the best configuration available to achieve lowest waiting time.

I think you should go back and look at the other threads with advice, your budget. There is "ideal" and "affordable."
Will it pay for itself in 24 months so you can afford the next revision at that time?
    Start with an 8-Core 3GHz.
Add a Port Multiplier controller and two drive cases, 5 drives each, nearly 400MB/sec RAID.
    Throw in 8GB RAM.
Add in costs for software upgrades, two sets of backups, four internal 500GB drives.
Seagate has 750GB, as does WD. Hitachi has their $450 1000GB monster.
Give yourself time to build, test, and optimize your setup, and expect to change it over time as you learn more.
Can't afford that? then trim the 8-core. But Apple has shown how efficient next generation applications already are for video when it comes to 3GHz 8-core Mac Pro.

  • Need to create a workflow approval. I need a Acrobat Pro or Acrobat Pro Extended?, which one?

I need to create a workflow for approval. But i've downloaded and executed acrobat pro trial and i don't see: commentaries=send a PDF for approval. I only saw commentaries=send a PDF for reviews. Has Acrobat Pro the approval option or just Acrobat Pro extended?

The best way to approve a document is using a signature field. You sign the document when it meets your approval.

I am using InDesign CS5. I have a body of text which is ranged left with tabbed indents. My client now wants the copy to be justifed, keeping the tabbed indents. Help and advice needed please!

    Hi
That screen grab helps a lot. There’s a much easier way of doing what you’re doing.
Remove all your tabs and set the text in justified paragraphs.
I’ve typed in dummy text in the example I made below, but after “19.1” put in a space and put your blinking cursor after the space and before the ’N’ of ‘Notices'.
Then hold down the Command key and hit Backspace (on Mac at least - it’s the key between the Inverted commas/ apostrophe key and the return key).
The text will jump into place the way you want it to.
    Hope that helps
    Paul
PS You can set a tab, instead of using a space, in the description I gave above. So, after 19.1 or 19.2 or 19.185 etc etc insert a tab, then hit the Command Backspace after every paragraph number and they'll all line up exactly together. You'll find that editing text within the paragraphs
after you've set it will be LOADS easier this way.
You can put the tab anywhere you want it to be using 'Command-ShiftT' and putting a 'left align' tab just after the number. Just type the Command Backspace after the paragraph number and it'll work

  • I need help convincing my workflow administrator on Illustrator PDF presets.

I need help convincing my workflow administrator on Illustrator PDF presets.
I work at a company which prints folding cartons, pressure sensitive labels, and film packaging. Esko Automation Engine 12 is our primary workflow. We use PDF files saved directly out of Illustrator as the primary file format. At times, the size of an art file can get fairly bloated from scaled images, effects, transparency, etc. The workflow and Ilustrator have a hard time dealing with the file size. It has been suggested to use the "export" function under the File Menu and save the art file as a "normalized PDF". I honestly believe Distiller isn't even remotely involved when you do this. I tried to make the case to use the settings in the dialog box which appears when you save a PDF out of Illustrator. I know for a fact that this dialog box isn't any different from what you see in Distiller. From my years of experience with Kodak Prinergy, I know things like bicubic downsampling, etc. will not hurt the file. The workflow administrator thinks otherwise. Can anybody point me in the direction of Illustrator PDF presets that would convince him otherwise?

    Brian,
What is somewhat confusing in your post is your mentioning a capability to export PDF from the File Menu as a normalized PDF file. There is no such option in Adobe Illustrator, at least as it comes directly from Adobe. You may use the File=>Save As dialog to save the file as a PDF file, but PDF is not an option under File=>Export. Furthermore, in terms of the .joboptions provided by Adobe, there is no Normalized PDF joboptions settings.
You mention Esko. Is it possible that you have one of Esko's products installed that provides proprietary plug-ins to Adobe Illustrator? If so, that may be the source of this Normalized PDF option. Maybe some other participant in the is forum knows more about that, but at Adobe, we don't (for better or worse).
You mention problems with file bloat due to “scaled images, effects, transparency, etc.” Are you referring to the Illustrator .AI files or to PDF files created from same? If the issue is the .AI file size, the only thing you can do to fix that is to uncheck the save as compatible PDF file option when saving .AI. In terms of PDF files from Adobe Illustrator:
    (1)  Scaled images should not add anything to a PDF file size unless you take such images and attempt to upres them in Photoshop prior to creating PDF. There really is no benefit to be achieved by such upresing of the images; any competent RIP can do that itself just as well as Photoshop.
    (2)  Transparency only adds to the PDF file size if you create PDF with transparency already flattened, or what I would better describe as ruined. Flattening transparency often causes large raster bitmaps and/or very complex groups of vector objects to be created to simulate transparency in an opaque imaging model (such as is supported by PostScript).
You obviously need to produce PDF that can be accommodated by the rest of your workflow. Since we don't know what that is and whether it conforms to current best industry practices, we cannot make an absolute recommendation for you.
However, generally speaking, the most reliable PDF print publishing workflow would generally require that you create PDF/X-4 using the PDF/X-4 PDF preset from Adobe Illustrator (or for that matter, from InDesign as well). PDF/X-4 supports full ICC color management (including spot colors), the entire PDF imaging model, and live transparency.
