Airport Extreme no longer extending my network

I have 3 Airport Extremes and one Airport Express set up in my house (all 5th generation). One is hooked up directly to the modem and I use it to create a network, the other three I use to extend the network. The Airport Extreme closest to the main one works fine. The other two, as of a few weeks ago, have the blinking orange light and they both have the "Extended Network" error. The 3rd Airport Extreme is in the next room, it used to feed off of the main AExtreme without a problem. Sometimes it says "Connection: Good" sometimes "Excellent". I connected it next to the main AExtreme and it worked (green light), but once I took it back to its original place the orange light started blinking again. The 4th Airport (Express) feeds off of the 3rd one, so I understand why that one's not working. But I don't understand why the 3rd one stopped working all of a sudden. I've reset it to factory settings several times and nothing. I have made no changes in the configuration and there have been no infrastructure changes in the house (and no furniture has been moved). Is there any reason why the reach of an Airport would change all of a sudden? I really need help with this. I have no internet connection in two big areas of the house because of this one AExtreme.

Weirdly enough, I had a 1st generation Time Capsule lying around and connected it in the exact same place the AExtreme giving me problems is, and it works fine, but for some reason it's feeding off of the AExtreme that's right outside where the main one is and not directly from the main one. I've never had any problems with an Airport connecting to another one that is not the main one. I live in a two-story house, the Airport Express is the only one downstairs, it has always fed off of another Airport that is not the main one. Right now it's not being detected because there are closed window shutters that prevent it from getting the signal, but once I open them it's all good. When the AExpress downstairs is not working, there's no internet at all downstairs, but there is when I open the shutters and the AExtreme from which it feeds is also working.
Right this minute, after writing the first paragraph and taking a break, I restored the problematic AExtreme (Rosangela's AirPort Extreme) to factory settings and now it's working again all of a sudden. That one and the Time Capsule are literally right next to each other, yet one is feeding off of the main AExtreme and the other one is feeding off of the one right outside where the main one is.
I guess I'll have to restore the Express as well and put the previously-abandoned Time Capsule downstairs to cover more space.
John, how do I connect a base station in "roaming"? Everytime I restore a base station or add a new one it simply asks me if I want to extend my network or create a network. I ask it to extend my network, Airport Utility does its thing and it usually works. What's the difference between that and using "roaming" configuration?

  • How do i set up time capsule to work with airport extreme base to extend wireless network?

i have a airport extreme base, how do i set up a time machine to extend the wireless network i have with airport extreme? i have also 3 airport express's connected to the same network to extend my wifi all over my house. thanks in advance.

    Much better graphics, thanks.
You can leave the Time Capsule connected by Ethernet from the Linksys and configure for a "roaming" network as mentioned previously.
To do this, open AirPort Utility - Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Same name as the AirPort Extreme
No check mark needed next to Allow this network to be extended
Radio Mode = Same setting as the AirPort Extreme
    Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = Same setting as the AirPort Extreme
Wireless Password = Same password as the AirPort Extreme
    Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon, then the Internet Connection tab
    Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings and allow the Time Capsue to restart
Then power down the entire network
    Wait a minute or two
Start the modem first and let it run a full minute
Start the AirPort Extreme the same way
    Power up the switch
Power up the Time Capsule for a minute
Keep starting devices one at a time about a minute apart
Now, your computer will automatically pick up a wireless signal from either the AirPort Extreme or Time Capsule, whichever device is closer and providing the stronger signal.

  • Airport extreme won't extend wireless network

I have two airport extreme base stations (the 802.11n versions, both of them), both with the latest firmware.  One is the main base station, connected to the cable modem.  The second is set up to extend the network where the signal from the first is weak.
After working flawlessly for about 6 months, the second airport extreme, the one that extends the network, will not do anything but blink yellow.  I have turned the power off and on, restored default settings through Airport Utility, and performed a hard reset.  After the latter two, I am able to "see" the unit again, and configure it again to extend the network, but immediately after doing so it goes back to non-functioning blinking yellow signal.
Is this just likely a hardware problem so that I need to bring it in?  Or is there something more I can try?
    Many thanks.

Is this just likely a hardware problem so that I need to bring it in?  Or is there something more I can try?
Before bringing it back I would suggest that you temporarily relocate the extending Extreme into the same room as the Extreme it is extending. Go ahead and reconfigure them for an extended network. This time does the extending Extreme provide you with a steady green status light?
If this is the case, you may find that just need to reposition the extending Extreme in a different location so that it is within a Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) range greater than 25 dB. Let me know if you would like for me to provide you with step-by-step direction on how to calculate SNR jusing a Mac laptop.
The other thing would be to verify that there isn't some new form of Wi-Fi interference present that is preventing the extending base station from receiving a quality signal.

  • Airport extreme didn't extend WIFI network well

My major airport extreme(connect with cable) on the 2nd floor. I want to extend WIFI to the ground floor. I used 2 extra airports extreme to entend WIFI one by one. I set up the airports accoding to introdcution. I saw every airports light are green. But I can't get the network when I stand beside the farthest airport (from the major one).
    My wireless options setting:
    Radio Mode: "802.1a/n - 802.1b/g", i used to set it on "802.1a/n - 802.1b/g/n(automatic)" but not work.
    2.4GHz Channel: Aitomatic
    5GHz Channel: Aitomatic
I don't know which gen. whose aiports are. The mayjor airport be marked 2009 on the bottom. The other 2 are marked 2006. All airports are updated to the latest version 7.6.4.
Anyone know what I missed? Or What I should change setting? Thanks.

Do you mean I can't use "Apple-PT3" to extend "Apple-PT2"? Currently, the diagram looks like a line. But the system asked me to choose a device to be extended when finish step up "Apple-PT3" wifi extend before. I have chosen "Apple-PT1", the diagram is not like the picture I have attached. It looks like "Apple-PT2" and "Apple-PT3" are on the same level. Both connect to "Apple-PT1". But it doesn't work as well.
I have read you post. Do you mean if a place SNR level is 25dB, then the wifi SNR level which I can extend will be no more then 25dB if I put "Apple-PT2" there?

  • Airport Extreme no longer recognizes my Express when I try to password protect the network

When I try to protect my network with a password, my airport extreme no longer recognizes my airport express.  How can I fix this so I can connect my network and still use my network for airtunes??

I think the initial problem is that your iPhone was connected to an open network that wasn't yours.
Go to Settings > WiFi and "Forget" the network created by that AirPort Extreme, it's older than dirt. Forget your neighbor's network also.
Perform the equivalent actions with your Mac: System Preferences > Network > Wi-Fi > Advanced... Delete every network that appears, including your own.
Then, connect to your own network on all your devices, after which you ought to be able to use any of them and configure your Extreme without any difficulty. You may need to start over with a "hard reset" on both the main AirPort Extreme and the one extending its network.
Does this have anything to do with the fact that 'Back to My Mac' is probably enabled?
Not exactly, but using iCloud Keychain will populate all your devices with the names of preferred networks that any of them connect to, no matter where they are. I don't know why Apple considers that a beneficial feature.

  • Do I have to use airport extreme to be a main network if I want to use Airport express extend my wifi range

Do I have to use airport extreme to be a main network if I want to use Airport express extend my wifi range.

You cannot extend wifi from a different brand router..
    Only apple to apple.
But the apple router does not have to be the main router.. it can be in bridge.. as long as it is creating a wireless network it will work fine.

  • I have both a simultaneous dual band and a regular dual band airport extreme on an extended network will the 5ghz work at its full potential if its the one that is extending the network?

I have a A1143 model Airport extreme with dual band capabilities but not simultaneous, i'd like that to run on the 2.4ghz band, while i have a A1408 model airport extreme as the "extender" but i want to make sure that even though im running the 2.4 and the newer model is extendeding it, my simulataneous dual band will still work to its full potential (ie: 300mbs i think is the max for the 5ghz)..?
notes: no i can't use the newer model as the primary and the older model as the extender.

I am assuming that your simultaneously dual-band Extreme is using the same Network Name for both radios. If that is the case, and depending on the distance between AirPorts, the extending Extreme is most likely just extending the 2.4 GHz radio. That would leave the 5 GHz wireless network basically "untouched."

  • How to add old airport extreme 11g to new airport extreme 11n to extend network?

I am trying to use my old Airport Extreme 11g to extend my wireless network from my newer Airport Extreme 11n. Are they compatible?

They are, but you may want to think twice before using this approach. The reasons are: 1) The extended network will only operate in the 802.11g Radio Mode, and 2) The overall bandwidth will be reduced by half for each base station added. Since this will be a "g" network, you'd be getting around 25-27 Mbps maximum of bandwidth.
If you still would like to pursue this, please check out the following Apple Support article for the details.

  • Airport express just stopped extending the network

I have an airport express that I have been using for 3 years to extend the network in my house.
All of a sudden it started flashing amber. I've tried soft resets, hard resets, factory resets, and I can't get it to extend the network anymore.
I have 3 other expresses in the house that still extend the network, but this one won't.
Everytime I go run airport utility, it sees the express, and will actually allow me to JOIN the network (I get a solid green light, everything is good) but everytime I ask it to EXTEND the network, it gives me an error message and says it can't do it.
It's an old extreme, that I bought refurbished, so I might be able to accept it's old and needs to be replaced, but then why can I join the network, but not EXTEND the network?
    Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Apple's instructions to "extend a wireless network" are on the main forum page and also here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4259
Although the example pictures an AirPort Extreme as the "extending" device, the setup for an AirPort Express would be exactly the same.

  • Settings to use airport extreme as an extender to the Comcast Gateway (3)?

I have been using my airport extreme in bridge mode, but now want to use it as an extender without connecting the ethernet cable to the Comcast Gateway (3).  I can't seem to get the Gateway software to recognize the airport extreme as an extender.  What settings do I need?

I install a lot of AirPorts, and I recommend if you can't run ethernet, then use a power line extender to feed the AirPort.  You will be disappointed extending your network with wi-fi.
If you must, then fully reset the AirPort and start over.  It should find the existing HOME-xxxx network and want to use as a bridge.  If it doesn't find the network, then with your browser go into the GUI on the gateway at http://10.0.0.1 and find the trusted device page, you might need to modify the setting if the MAC address of the AirPort shows up.  Logon is admin and password is password.
Depending on the location of the equipment, you might want to bridge the gateway and use your AirPort as your main router and wi-fi, since it's far superior over a gateway.

  • Can I use an old Airport Extreme as an extender with a new Airport Express

Hi All,  I have Verizon Fios and the data line runs into my bedroom.  I purchased a new Airport Express today to replace the Airport Extreme (from 2006).  Can I use the old Airport Extreme as an extender (I'd like to set it up in the basement as I get poor connectivity there).  I tried using the Airport Utility - Other WiFi Devices to find the Airport Extreme, but it's not registering. Is what I'm attempting possible?  If so, how do I set it up?

Can I use the old Airport Extreme as an extender
Is this the "round" or "dome" shaped AirPort Extreme?
If yes, then it is not possible to have the AirPort Extreme wirelessly "extend" the signal from the AirPort Express.
However, the older AirPort Extreme can probably be set up to provide more wireless signal coverage if it will connect back to the LAN <--> port on the AirPort Express using a permanent, wired Ethernet cable connection.
In this case, the setup of the older AirPort Extreme will require that you have an older version of AirPort Utility installed on your computer. If it is a Mac, then the Mac must be running Leopard (10.5.x), Snow Leopard (10.6.x), or a PC with AirPort Utility could be used to set up and configure the older Extreme.
f you have the "square" or "flat" version of the AirPort Extreme, then everything becomes much easier. Post back if you do.

  • After setting up airport extreme to my existing wireless network after restart unable to conect even the light is green is telling me need to manage network im usin airport utility in pc

I try to set up my airport extreme thru my existing  wifi network using airport utility 5.6 on pc after i was done said that after restarting unable to located extreme to check in my manage networks Ican se green light on extreme but can not find in network to manually add on. Any help woul be appreciated!

If nothing works, try a factory reset: disconnect the Extreme from power, press the reset button, plug in power while still pressing the reset button, release reset button after 5 seconds or so.
This method usually helps me with problems with my Airport Extreme and Express (this happens seldom by the way). The only disadvantage is that you have to set it up again completely.

  • Two Airport Extremes no longer working in tandem to extend network

Trouble has cropped up with my home network, I think dating back to the installation of Leopard (though I'm not sure about that). I have been using two Airport Extreme (both 802.11n) to extend my wireless network throughout the house. For some reason, the two no longer seem to be communicating with each other. I have done factory resets on both, gone through the streamlined setup routine outlined in the Knowledge Base article on configuring Airport Extreme networks, and no dice. The remote station, once set up to extend the base network, no longer appears as a separate station in Airport Utility, and its indicator light is a steady amber. I seem to recall this was the case when it was working, too.
    Any thoughts?

Here is some more info. I had a look at the posts on this issue from Nov. 19th, where Jane describes setting up the two base stations in a particular sequence using the assisted (not manual) setup process. My problem is that none of the relevant options ... allowing the network to be extended, designating the second base station as a remote station, etc ... come up in the assisted menus. I can only get to those options via the manual setup.
I would also note that I called Apple about this problem. After being informed, to my extreme frustration, that Apple does not support manually setup WDS configurations over the phone, the Apple rep told me (in a decidedly dismissive tone) that I should be using the assisted setup process. So Apple has confirmed that this is the way to go ... but Airport Utility doesn't seem to work that way.
    Help? Anyone?

  • AirPort Extreme extends my network and has worked well for three months. Now it can no longer extend the network and flashes Amber. I have restored to factory settings moved it closer to time capsule and rebooted the system without luck

i have a blinking Amber on my extreme now and it cannot extend the network.  It was working fine and nothing has changed. I have restored to factory settings moved it to another room and rebooted the system without luck. Any suggestions

    What OS are you running?
Please give me a screenshot of the current AE setup..
I strongly recommend if you have issues.. take control of all the variables. Apple routers have too much auto..
Here is a list that I use for setups when using Yosemite.. but it relates to any OS.
You will need to factory reset again to get going.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the AE.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the AE to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite or whatever you are using.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
    eg AEgen5 for basestation.
Use AE24ghz and AE5ghz for wireless on each band, with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. Ensure the AE always takes the same IP address.. this is not a problem for router but if the AE is bridged you can have trouble.. Try using the static IP method or control it via the main router dhcp reservations.
    4. Check your share name on the computer/s is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric..
    5. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only.
    6. Set up the extend to the Express using 2.4ghz and then see how good or bad the connection is.. this is better in the old v5 utility but if you hover your mouse over where it shows connection an extra chunk of info comes up.
I have specifically used 5ghz to make the extend.. because by testing it works better.. but do not be fooled.. this good connection is poor.. the RSSI.. which is difference signal .. at -79dbm is down the bottom of the stable.. and it drops out on a daily basis.. you want to see that signal around -60dbm at min.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.

  • Windows XP laptop can't connect to Airport Extreme used to extend network.

Have a time capsule for main wireless. PC works fine connecting to it. Have added Airport Extreme to extend network. The mac sees it fine and the PC can connect to it via airport utility but won't connect as wireless and the internet. Running WPA2. Have the latest firmware in each. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for clarifying. If you don't mind, let's double-check your extended-network setup configuration:
o Open AirPort Utility and select the Time Capsule (TC), and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then, click Wireless.
o Verify that both “Create a wireless network” from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu and “Allow this network to be extended” checkbox are selected.
o Next, select the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn), and then, choose Manual Setup from the Base Station menu.
o Verify that “Extend a wireless network” has been selected from the Wireless Mode pop-up menu. Also verify that the correct Network Name is shown for the network you want the AEBSn to extend.
    Do your settings match these?
