AMD Athlon 64 3800+ cpu upgrade to AMD Athlon 64 X2

Hello everyone,
First of all, I have been to cpu-upgrade.com and typed in my current (CPU)--> AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.40GHz (motherboard)--> ASUS A8M2N-LA (Naos) GL6.
According to the website, my AM2 Socket (940pin) is capable of upgrading to a Dual Core, Anyone know if that site is accurate or not? Any help would be nice. I need to get away from this single core.
1) Some CPU models require a BIOS upgrade, which a BIOS upgrade for this board is not available.
2) A lot of X2 Dual Cores work either using a 4400+, 4600+, and so on....
I do have a 550watt PSU installed, also I am using MSI Nvidia GeForce GT620 PCI-express 16x graphics, not using onboard.
I have read that some BIOS' upgrades terminate the onboard video, is that true? Basically, whatever I already have installed is current and up to date with all video/sound drivers, etc... If anybody very knowledgable knows for sure if an AMD Athlon 64 X2 will work in my system that would be nice. My specs below......
OS: Windows Vista Home Basic (32bit)
CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3800+ 2.40GHz
RAM: 2GB (GDDR2)
PSU: 550watt (all 20+4 for main cable to motherboard connected using all 24 pins + 4pin connector for CPU? I believe.
Sound: Realtek HD ALC888 High Definition Audio
Video: MSI Nvidia GeForce GT620 (GDDR3 with 2GB Video Memory).
Only thing I am bottle necking on is the CPU, and I would love to upgrade to Dual Core, once again, thank you for the help.

Hello @bigsnake,
I understand you are looking to upgrade your processor on your Compaq Presario Media Center SR2013WM Desktop PC. I am providing you with a link to a CPU-Upgrade thread concerning your very question ASUS A8M2N-LA CPU compatibility list. Now this is the only information I have been able to find concerning a processor upgrade for your Compaq Presario Media Center SR2013WM Desktop PC.
I hope this helps. Thank you for posting on the HP Forums. Have a great day!

  • After AMD X2 3800 upgrade MSI Radio causes stop error

    Hi!
First of all sorry for by bad English
I have an MSI TV Anywhere master card for about two years now.
Until now it was running fine, using the updated drivers from MSI's site
This include the main driver, and the new WinDVR 3.0 and the updated MSI Radio
With these AMD vs Intel price wars, I've upgraded my Athlon Winchester 3000+ to a X2 3800+
    The CPU is running fine
However, MSI radio immedialy gives a BSOD since I have changed the CPU
I have even got as far as reinstalling XP SP2 from scratch, and it still BSOD's :(
    I get
    STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER
    How do I solve it?
Any other users having trouble with TV Anwhere Master with an AMD X2
CPU has run for several hours PRIME 95 and some heavy games with no crashes whatsoever
Just click on MSI radio and the mouse cursor wil freeze, followed by a BSOD and a reboot
    Every time this happend
The only time when I could lauch MSI radio was when I booted Windows XP in safe mode
    Thx in advance
    Steven

    Hi Stu!
Followed you advice, I looked a little more at the processor AMD procesor driver program
I already had installed the latest version, but it crashed too :(
However you suggestion had led my to try this:
    * Removed the normal AMD processor driver
    * Installed the AMD Fix for dual core processors from the AMD site
It worked!! Now MSI radio no more crashes!
    knock on wood
I'll report back when there are errors
This is the page I got the utility from:
    http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13118,00.html
    It's the first tool listed
    From the desc:
"The AMD Dual-Core Optimizer can help improve some PC gaming video performance by compensating for those applications that bypass the Windows API for timing by directly using the RDTSC (Read Time Stamp Counter) instruction"
Hope this helps anyone who has an AMD X2 an has similar problems
Actually, with the new drivers from MSI I'm quite happy with my TV Anywhere Master

  • Trying to upgrade on board Cpu to an AMD FX Black 6300

    Hi,
I currently have AMD Phenom II X4 810, the stock cpu that came with the desktop. I want to Install an AMD Fx Black 6300. My bios version is 5.02. I don't know if that needs to be updated? If so where can I do that? There is a list of compatable cpu's. If thats the case i cannot use this cpu in my desktop?

According to THIS PAGE, the upgrade processors are:
    TDP=125W
    AMD Phenom II X4 9xx/9xxe/8xx Quad-Core (D)
    AMD Phenom II X3 7xx/7xxe Triple-Core (H)
    AMD II Athlon X4 6xx/6xxe (P)
    AMD II Athlon X3 4xx/4xxe ®)
    AMD II Athlon X2 2xx/2xxe ®)
The AMD FX 6300 is not on that list.  Unless someone gives you a modified BIOS, it is not likely to work.

  • Upgrade from AMD 64 to AMD X2 64

    Hello :
I think to upgrade from AMD Athlon 64 3200+ to AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ (Dual Core), but i don't know if my motherboard support it.
    Motherboard : MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum Edition (MS-7125)
                        06/23/2005-MS-7125-6A61FM49C-00
    PCB : Version 1.0
    BIOS :

              W7125NMS V1.6 062305 20:14:37
              Date 06/23/05
    Please Help me !
    Thanks.

It will.  I have exactly that same motherboard and I just upgraded from a clawhammer 3500 to an Opteron 175.  Update your BIOS to latest (1B I think) and you should be good to go.  Note that when I boot, if I don't go into the BIOS, it only sees one core.  But as I run Linux, I rarely ever have to boot.
    It will work though.

  • Maximum Athlon XP CPU support ; enter yours !

I’ve a K7T Turbo Limited Edition (3.X with Bios 3.4) but i cdo not understand what is the maximum CPU supported; In fact :
    The manual says Athlon 1.3Ghz
The Board product page says Athlon XP 2Ghz
The CPU support page says Athlon XP 1.8Ghz (the OK stops there)
The Bios page says the ver. 3.3 bios supports XP up to 2Ghz
    It’s a little messy, isn’t it ?

As the BIOS for the K7T Turbo2 is the same, but this board supports higher CPU's, it's a bit confusing that you see the above CPU's listed...
That makes no sense as the power consumtion of the xp 2000+ is lower (70 watts max according to amd tech docs) that the 1.4 gig tbird cpu(72 watts max according to amds techdocs)

I have a K8N Neo4 Platinum (PCB 1.0) and it had an AMD 64 3200+ single core CPU.
Now I've upgraded to an AMD 64 3800+ X2 dual core but the BIOS and MS Vista are seeing only the one core.
The BIOS is at the latest version - 1.D.

    Yes it does support X2

  • AMD FX2 (Piledriver) is here, last AMD performance CPU ever!

    Quote
In Intel's eyes, AMD was never a real competition. And Intel high end CPU pricing has always been dictated anyway
The last time AMD had an edge was when they launched the Athlon 64 CPUs. That didn't last too long.
Although Intel could afford the higher pricing, seeing that people were buying them, regardless, my gut feel is they would increase their profit margin, not having competition. So prices will go one way only.
It would be a pity. Lets hope this new management at AMD rethinks their strategy, that is, if all of this is not a rumour.

Thanks for the response, it was the reply I didn't want to hear but was totally expecting.
I have accepted that the only way forward now is a motherboard upgrade.
The downside of this is that I have lost faith in MSI, and while I recognize that the fault here lies with the retailer who sold me this bundle I do not wish to be burned againi.
If anyone can recommend an MSI Motherboard capable of running the FX-6100 for a reasonable price, and can vouch that the throttling does not happen without the need for a third party cooling solution... then I will look into it. If not I have found a Gigabyte branded motherboard capable of 125w CPU's with good reviews for a similar price to the 760GM-P23.

  • Can I install AMD A6-3400M CPU on Satellite C850-11F

    Hello, i need some help.
I have toshiba satelite C850-11F and I got new cpu amd A6-3400 and i dont know if i put that cpu in my notebook would it work normaly.
    Thanks

To be honest my experience with AMD CPU upgrades is limited. I upgraded some notebooks equipped with Intel CPUs and this was very tricky since the BIOS did not support all CPUs even if the chipset did it.
However, the AMD CPU upgrade might be much trickier due to the chipset support.
I think both CPUs are completely different E1-1200 (currently in your notebook) supports two Cores (code name Zacate) and A6-3400M supports 4 CPU cores called Llano.
Also the socket might be different.
So from my point of few you will have no luck with this new CPU

What PSU are you using ? Can you list the power output ? (writen on side of psu)
Going from your specs you listed your graphics card is very hungery on power so I would suggest your psu isn't up to the job under load.

  • Planning To buy MSI K9N Platinum + AMD X2 3800+

    Hello everyone,
as the title as Iam planning to buy a MSI K9N Platinum board with an AMD X2 3800+ for a new system build. Ive been out of the game for a while, the last time I was really up to date on computer technology is when the AMD XP 2500+ Barton was the hottest thing on the market, some what of a new comer to dual core technology. I have a few questions, mainly about the board it self. I did a little searching and that answered some of my question but I have a few more.
Ive read a lot about the shutdown problems from the board when transferring large files or burning DVDs. I have a few questions about that.
From what I see so far, this is a very informative forum and I appreciate any and all information. So here goes:
    1) It says on the MSI website that the ram slot for this motherboard is at 1.8 volts. The ram Iam planning to get is OCZ Platinum EL XTC PC2-6400 1GB 2X512 DDR2 CL4-5-4-15 240PIN DIMM Dual Channel Memory Kit. On the OCZ website it says that the ram modules run at 2.1 volts. My Question is if I stick this ram in the mother board will it boot long enough for me to go into the bios and change the ram voltage to 2.1 volts?
    2) Now Ive read about the shutdown problems with this board. Ive seen a lot of people up the VCore to 1.35V. If I do this along with a bios flash, will this take care of the problems?
    3) Now the dealer that Iam buying my PC from didn't have this board in stock for the last week. He just got them in 2 days ago this week. Therefore Iam assuming he has the lastest version of these boards. Now are these problems taken care of on the new version of these boards? If not what can I do to get rid of them?
    4) Is there anything else I should know about this motherboard?
    Thanks for the the help.

Yes, you could set up manually the voltage to 2.1v perfectly I've got one k9nsli p, with an amdx2 3800+ whit 2gb ddr2 (512x4 twins pack corsair xms2 ddr2 800) that works at 1,9v

My shutdowns problems was resolved by unnistallin' nvidia IDE controller, nothing about vcore or flashin bios... I keep original bios version 1.0 & Core center shows vcore at 1.33v

Good question... 2morrow I'll check on the box of my k9 the part number and will post it
    4) Is there anything else I should know about this motherboard?
The first week, I was desire burn my k9  shutdowns... shutdowns.... shutdowns... after I find the cause of that ShiX$/#(! (nvidi IDesuxs controller) my life is happy!
    good luck

You can go through Page 4 Chapter 1 of service manual. As far as your graphics chip is concerned, your current Intel HD 3000 GPU is integrated into your Motherboard and as such, is not an upgradeable component.
Although Models similar to yours come with a 'Dedicated Graphics Card', the 'Card' is still soldered to the Motherboard and can't be changed.
    Hope this resolves your concern.

  • 990FXA-GD65 AMD 970 BE CPU Ratio Only working on one core

Pretty much cut & paste of the "990FXA-GD80 AMD 955 BE CPU Ratio Only working on one core" thread.
I have overclocked this AMD 970 BE previously on a asus m3n72-d without issue. Always changing the multiplier to achieve the desired frequency while leaving the FSB at 200. But, after setting up everything on my new 900fxa-gd65 the CPU ratio change to 19x with a fsb of 200 only changes one core to 3.8 ghz and leaves the others at 3.5 ghz (17.5x 200).

Just thought I'd make a new thread to seperate the issue between the two MSI boards.

For what its worth, the problem should be fixed in the latest BETA UEFI/BIOS Release:
