Any problems using one Apple ID to span across 6+ devices?
Hi everyone (or at least one person with a kind heart),
I am looking for any guidance for my wife and myself. Quick background, we are both long time users of the following devices:
A) Her 4s 32 GB iPhone
B) My 4s 32 GB iPhone
C) Her old iPod
D) My Mini 64 GB iPad
E) Her 64GB iPad
F) Our 256GB Macbook Air
F is the newest member of the family. I originally had a PC Dell which I synced all of the devices to two distinct Windows accounts.
My wife's Windows account & my Windows account. We have two distinct Apple I.D(s).
Everything synced swimmingly on the old Dell. Well, the swimming got rough when my old Dell went kablooey!
Fast-forwad a few days and I swallowed my PC pride and jumped ship to a Macbook. After getting the dreaded "This computer is already associated with an Apple ID" my hunt was on for a solution as I loved my new MacBook. I did not want to revisit the PC world, again. Shortly after, I discovered and joined this-thread-already-in-progress . With no input from Apple, I thought about abandoning the idea and thought - could we (my wife and I) simply merge to one Apple ID, thus resolving the above mentioned warning that "This computer is...blah...blah...blah"?
Our storage consumption is not that large as we have always tended to have very similar libraries. We started the Apple ID's so long ago, we just got lazy and always kept it that way.
Am I not seeing some pitfall that will sour this idea? Meaning, let's say I pitch my wife's Apple ID? And we begin to use only my Apple ID?
1) My immediate concern is that I think both of our Apple I.D.'s are at the maximum of the "5 out of 5" number of device warnings due to all of the various Dell, Thinkpads and now Macbook computers I have owned over the years combined with all of the various iPhone, iPod, iPad models we have owned during the same time.
2) Besides simply picking and choosing the various new purchases under our newly merged Apple ID, is there any other sort of problem that I may not be seeing?
3) Is Apple likely to reset the "5 out of 5" ticker due to all of the above?
4) Oh yeah, I have two Apple TVs. Does that even matter?
Thanks in advance for reading this.
Razor, thank you taking the time to help out! I really mean that. In digesting your scenario and advice, I think I do have at least one question. Am I not remembering the "5 out of 5" warning correctly? You are saying 10 devices but I guess I either read it wrong (very likely) but I thought there was some limit to the number of times you transfer a library of music to a new computer (i.e. not devices)? I easily could be confused here. In reading what you wrote again, Apple wants to limit not the computer housing the library but the devices that are sharing the library? Thus, since I am only at 5 - I am good to go?
In regards to iTunes Match - we both have it (i.e. my wife and myself). So, I am covered there? All I need to do is pick one Apple ID as the "Master ID" (probably my ID), then plug my wife's devices into the MacBook, sync it and then iTunes Match should push-down-from-the-cloud all of her purchases?
That's interesting about iMessage. Not sure if I have my mind wrapped around that entirely, but I will re-read your post again. And in regards to testing my marriage with Apple ID - that rang truer than you could possibly appreciate. Or maybe not?
I probably have more questions just percolating under the surface - so I will likely holler out to you again until you get bored or annoyed with me. Something my wife says is a skill I've perfected.
Thanks again!
Glen

We Have set up 5 differNet apple devices ( iPhones, I touches and iPad) so that they all use the same apple I'd and password. I would now like to give each family member their own apple I'd and password. Can I do this without loosing any of the data on each persons gadget? Thanks!
I think I will do this. I will use my apple ID and set face time and message to work independently. That solves one problrem. My other problem and maybe my bigger problem is that if I am using my apple ID, how do I iflter all of this so that my kids don't see my contacts, get my apps, etc. ?

I am having problems using my Apple tv with home sharing. I continuously get a message that my user name or password is incorrect, but it works on other devices. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Unpower it. If it still happens on a restart give it time - Apple's servers sometimes have glitches.

when to persons are using one apple ID and they sync their contacts to gather then first sync contacts are deleted. how we get it back?
You can share the same Apple ID for purchasng form the iTunes and app stores without any problems, but you should all used separate iCloud accounts with separate Apple IDs. (You are not required to use the same ID for iCloud and other services as you do for the iTunes store.) This will prevent you from ending up with merged data. You should also use separate Apple IDs for iMessage and FaceTime or you will end up getting each other's text messages and FaceTime calls.

I'm about to purchase Lion. My husband and I each have a desktop, iPad and iPhone. We currently use one Apple ID for iPad/phone purchases. Can we purchase 2 copies of Lion with one Apple ID or do we have to use different Apple IDs for the purchase? If we use the different Apple IDs can we still use the same ID for all of our purchases.
And just in case you were wondering, installing one purchased copy on all the Macs you own is specifically called out as allowed in the Mac OS X Lion license.
If you do not want to download multiple times, just copy the Applications -> Install Lion app to a safe place BEFORE you do the first install. Then copy that copy to any Mac you own where you want to install Lion. -
Is it ok to use one apple id for two devices ?
is it ok to use one apple id for two devices ?
Here's the deal: The SLA permits the "sharing" of content with up to 5 family members in the same household. Any other distribution of content is considered stealing...the SLA does not give you the right to distribute content in any way, shape or form. Its really that simple, and "friend" is NOT a family member living in the same household.

I was trying to take my Mac air to factory default settings.
I've done all that it says in the documment i was following, and them during the process it asked me the APPLE ID.
I put the apple id i have in my iphone. But it's not the one... it's said that i don't have any OSX associated with it... so it can not install the OSX.
So what can i do? -
Any Problems using SSL with Safari and the move with Internet explorer to require only TLS encryption.
Hi .
Apple no longer supports Safari for Windows if that's what you are asking > Apple apparently kills Windows PC support in Safari 6.0
Microsoft has not written IE for Safari for many years. -
Are there any problems using a back cover.
I want to protect the back of my iPad from scratches. Are there any problems using a skin or cover on the back?
Is it ok to cover the back of iPad 2? Won't it affect the cooling system? Coz I don't see any ventilation point and it may be the back metal plate itself which brings out the heat. I purchased a "Targus" back cover from apple store and it fits perfectly and beautifully also very comfortable to handle but I removed it thinking that it might harm., also Apple hasn't introduced any sort of back cover either, only the smart cover for the screen they have, may be coz the back is designed to be open to the air.

Anyone having problems using non-apple mains charger with Classic?
I have 2g nano which works fine with my generic ipod charger. I'm about to upgrade to an 80gb Classic. Anyone have any problems using these?

I found this "recipe" in a another forum and it worked!
a) Disconnect all your devices from icloud (ipod, iphone, mac, etc.)
b) Reset and CHANGE your Apple ID password
c) Reconnect all devices
and Voila!
Voila what?
Unless you put the new password in all devices they won't reconnect. -

I have one apple id on my iPad and a second apple id on my iPhone and laptop. I want to use one apple id for everything. I tried wiping my iPad and synching it with my laptop. The old apple id still remains on my iPad. I can't get rid of it. Help.
On the iPad open Settings/iCloud and delete the account using the button at the bottom. Once deleted log in using the other account. For iTunes Stores use Settings/iTunes & Apps Stores, tapp on the Apple ID at the top then sign out. Once done sign in using the other account. Once you are happy with the changes plug your iPad into your computer to update the backup.
