App-V vs Citrix
So currently we have 13 virtual Citrix Xenapp 6.5 servers running. We usually have about 120 connected users at all times, and it peaks around 200 users.
We are looking for alternatives, and when checking what App-V could offer us, some claimed that App-V was too big for our environment..? They couldn't elaborate on that, but do anyone have any input? Why would App-V be "too big"..?
I have read quite a bit in blogs and forums about microsoft solutions vs citrix solutions, and it seems Microsoft offers a solid service now, so why wouldn't we make the switch? :-)

I believe you mix up something. You cannot compare App-V with XenApp. Let's say you have a client computer A and you want to use App X on it. When launching the app on Computer A with XenApp, the app itself will run on the XenApp server and simplified you
will only see the picture of the app running on XenApp. That's the terminal Server / Remote Desktop technology. When using App-V, the app is going to run directly on your Computer A and not on another remote system. So it uses all the resources of computer
A. From a technical perspective that's different.
BUT - you can combine those two Technologies, i.e. running virtualized App-V applications on XenApp and then publishing it via XenApp (ICA) to the client Computer.
Ask yourself about your requirements and goals and then see what technology or technologies fit best.

IE Apps crash in App-V on Citrix
We have 2 applications (Qbyte and BPC) that have IE front ends. We have virtualized these applications successfully with 4.6SP1 and they are both running in production on Windows 7 X86 and x64 with no issues. They both used to work in Citrix XenApp 6 running
on Server 2008 R2. However, they are now crashing in Citrix. The crash is an actual application crash of IE and not any kind of client crash.
I have tried disabling DEP, systematically uninstalling Citrix hotfixes that were applied in between the application working and not working, moving the box into an OU with no GPOs applied, enabling Local Interaction. I have tried sequencing on XP 32-bit, Win7
32-bit, Win7 64-bit and even built a Server 2008 R2 sequencer and sequenced on that. To date, nothing has resolved the crashing. Both applications work when installed locally - they only crash when running in App-V.
The crash details:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: IEXPLORE.EXE
Application Version: 8.0.7601.17514
Application Timestamp: 4ce79912

Other IE applications work fine in App-V with no crashing.
The JVM is not generating an hs_err.log file or any other crash dump that I can detect. The last thing is that if I open the application, allow it to crash, but keep the crash window open, I can launch a second instance of the application and it does not crash.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Darren.Hi Darren,
Did you ever resolve this issue?
I don't have a citrix environment like you but I do have 15 terminal servers running windows 2008 r2 that are running app v client 4.6 SP2 and when an app v application runs iexplore.exe, internet explorer then crashes.
One thing does work and I wondered if you had heard of it. I noticed that the HKEY_Local_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Softgrid\4.5\SystemGuard\SecKey had no permissions set. So I set the System, and Administrators to full control, and Users to
read control (same as the key directly above in the tree) and IE stopped crashing. However, I have a new problem with this, in that after rebooting the terminal servers the keys are wiped of their permissions and I have to manually set them again. So I was wondering if
you managed to fix your issue of IE crashing and how?
Thanks

APP-V 5.0 VDI A Temporary Profile is created when I log into the Virtual Desktop
Dear Sirs
I'm Enzo , an Italian System Engineer. Together with other fellows we created a test environment :
- a VDI machine (POC-VDI,10.102.94.219, Windows Server 2012 R2) with
RD Web Access, RD Connection Broker, RD Virtualization Host, RD Session Host Installed
The Hyper-V Environment includes :
- DHCP Server (to provide addresses to Virtual Desktop Collections)
- APP-V_5.0_Server , Application Virtualization Management Console 5.0, with 2 published packages (Office 2010 and Open Office 4)
- Sequencer_W8-1, Application Virtualization Sequencer 5.0
- Client_8-1 , Client Windows 8.1 with Application Virtualization Client 5.0
From the Client_8-1 we can download and run the two published packages from the server (user VDI_TEST_1)
The Client_8-1 has been used as the template (sysprep /oobe /generalize /shutdown) for the Virtual Dektop (APP-0 and APP-1)
included in the collection 'APPV' (Pooled, Automatically Manage Virtual Desktop, Roll Back Virtual Desktops Enabled).
I connect to the 'RD Web Access' ( http 10.102.94.219 RDWeb, user VDI_TEST_1) , I then connect to APPV collection .
When I get logged into the Virtual Desktop (APP-0 or APP-1, user VDI_TEST_1), a Temporary Profile is created. Why ?
We configured :
User Profile Disk : share Location 10.102.94.219 UPD
UPD : Share Everyone Full Control
Security SYSTEM Full Control
Network Service
Full Control
POC-VDI$ Full
Control
Administrators (POC-VDI\Aministrators)
Full Control
Users (POC-VDI\Users)
Read & Execute
I am puzzled as long as when I get logged into the Virtual Desktop, a Temporary Profile is created. Why ?
Thanks in advance for your kind attention
EnzoHighly unlikely it has anything to do with App-V.
Start troubleshooting by looking at permissions on shares and folder under the shares for the profile.

App-v 5.0 Sequence AutoCAD 2013
Hi, I am currently trying to sequence autoCAD 2013 according to tips from
http://www.naevette.com.au/sequencing-autodesk-autocad-2012-x64.
However, during the sequence, when I started AutoCAD installation, program will notify me that Dotnet4 section is missing and installation will be stack there for ever.
Has someone tried this? Please help!
THank you !
ThomasAll of the 2013 and most of the 2012 AutoCADs appear to be un-sequencable at this time, either under 4.6 or 5.0. I have been working a ticket with MS support for about 7 months now and we are not getting anywhere fast on it. The symptoms are
that the app at the client immediately quits after launch, issuing an app specific error that is different on each version of the app attempted, but often it is a complaint that it is not installed correctly. Procmon traces reveal no unusual file
or registry issues leading the app to make this complaint.
Something is amiss, as earlier versions work OK. I have ruled out licensing, VC Runtimes, and (I think) framework issues.
I would suggest punting on sequencing this until you see that someone else has success.

Office 2013 Prof Plus -Licensing on Citrix
Hi Experts,
I am looking forward to deploy Office 2013 PP, Project and Visio though Citrix XenApp 7.5. The servers are windows 2012 R2.
I am looking forwards to understand the latest licnesing model for Citrix/Remote desktop/Terminal server for Office 2013 PP.
How does volume licnesing work for Citrix/Terminal servers.
There are two requirements .
1. User accessing from office : In office users will have Windows 7 desktops , with office 2013 PP installed on it. Licensed with KMS. Some office users will be accessing OFFICE 2013 PP Apps published through Citrix xenapp 7.5. say for example
the number of such users is 100. As user is already licensed (office on windows 7), do we need a seperate license if these 100 users access the xenapp published version of office? Office 2013 pp will be published on 4 xenapp servers.
2. Users accessing from Home: When those 100 users are at home, user will login to vpn, open the browser and access office pp apps throught citrix. The office will run on the 4 xenapp servers in datacenter. In this case the
client machine is user's own home desktop. Does a user licenses for office makes us complaint with licensing in this case.
Please could you clarify my licensing doubts for above 2 scenarios.
Regards,
AbhishekHi,
To get the answer to the licensing questions, since it may be related to your local policy, I suggest you ask the local Volume Licensing Service Center:

Swing app keyboard stops working, mystery ESCAPE keystrokes appear in EDT
Java 6 Swing app. In our development environment, works great. In QA, they use it for a bit, type in a text field, click out to a Windows XP/7 app, click back in the text field, and the keyboard stops accepting keystrokes. The mouse continues to work, and the Swing app continues to paint to the screen.
I hooked up a KeyEventDispatcher to listen to what is going on. I'll post a more verbose log at the end of this post, but the short version is this. When the keyboard hangs, the log shows that 'escape' keys are being sent, though we do not do any keystroke injection in our app, ESCAPE or otherwise. Nothing on the Swing app can be determined visually to have focus.
Just before the app starts hanging, it has a side effect of not being able to be brought into the foreground by clicking on it, if, for example, one was working with Excel or Notepad, then try to click on the JFrame title of the app, or anywhere else on the app frame/internals. Once this condition happens, moving away to another Windows app, then going back to the Swing app, causes the keyboard to stop working and the KeyEventDispatcher to see 'escape' keystrokes being sent out.
Connecting remotely to the app via JVisualVM/JConsole does not show any of the threads hanging/blocked.
Sometimes you can work for hours before seeing this problem, and other times, you can start the app up and it happens right away. Once it happens, sometimes you can't recover, and sometimes you can click on a button on a navigator panel on the left side that displays an info panel on the right side, and you can start typing again in text fields.
Once this problem happens, you can start (or have already running) a completely different Swing app (ex.: StackTrace), and the keyboard will stop working for that app too, even though its running in its own separate VM.
This problem (ALMOST!) always happen when typing in a Swing text field (JTextField, JTextArea, etc.), clicking on and then typing in a Windows text area (Excel cell, Notepad), then clicking back into the Swing app's text field. A few times, we've gotten this to happen by typing in a text field, tabbing to a button, pressing a button, then tabbing/clicking back into the text field, all without leaving the Swing app. But this latter scenario is rare, usually going to/from Swing/Windows XP/7 apps cause the problem to occur more readily.
The QA computers normally use Citrix to connect and run the app, but this also happens if we run the app completely locally. But again, this only happens to some computers, all of the ones in the QA department; the development computers (the app has not been released into production yet) does not see this problem.
I had thought that our problem was this problem (Wrong characters in KeyEvents generated from input of barcode scanner but purposely slowing down the acceptance of KEY_PRESSED and KEY_RELEASED events before allowing them to go on to the Swing app (via a KeyDispatcher) did not solve the problem.
Also, we had thought it might be a Citrix problem and how it (or does it?) hook into the Windows keyboard. The fact that once one Swing app gets into this keyboard doesn't work and escape keys are being sent out by the EDT can affect another Swing app makes me wonder. We're not seeing any VM exceptions either like this (EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION - JRE 6.0_23 - Citrix, windows 2003
Been trying to get this one solved for over a week, but with no luck. Any help/advice would be appreciated. Thank you in advance for your time.

The only real difference is QA has the Citrix client installed on them, and development does not. You don't need to run our Swing app through a Citrix client though to cause the bug/freezing, just running it on a PC with the Citrix client seems to be enough (in theory). We've been working down a checklist of possible problems/solutions, and we've gotten to the "Install Citrix to the dev PC" item now, so I'll post back if that makes a difference or not in reproducing the problem.
I've also had QA people actually come over to a dev PC, without the Citrix client, and try to reproduce the problem, and they have not been able to. There's 'something' about their environment vs. ours, but not sure how that would manifest itself as a AWT/Swing keyboard event of mysterious escape keystrokes followed by the locking up on the keyboard, but not the whole Swing app. My personal guess is the Citirix client installing funky Windows-level keyboard driver(s), but I may be totally off on that. /shrugI read your initial post twice and couldn't find out whether you reproduce that on several different machines, so one "environmental" difference comes to mind: have you tried using another keyboard on the defective QA configuration?
Of course that doesn't explain in itself how the problem would manifest only after switching back and forth to a native Windows app, but then, with the hint that Citrix may make a difference, maybe one driver filters out repeated "Esc" keystrokes, while another doesn't, and that manifests only after a few app switches, and the system event queue, or whatever it's called in Windows, redirects the events to the target app/window?
Other than that, I wish you had investigated Jeanette's pacemaker hypothesis more... ;)
Otherwise, yeah. I have a hook in to see all AWTEvent's, but I still need to see/find what's posting the mysterious escape keys to the event queue.I assume it's what you mean, but I'll try to make that clear: you have to investigate, at the OS level, what is posting escape key events to the OS queue.
I am not a Windows developper, but I seem to understand that the following programs claims to capture keystrokes on the whole screen (not limited to a single window), with some limitations: http://www.codeproject.com/KB/winsdk/WIN_RECORDER.aspx
More generally, you should search for a Windows way to peek at the Windows' (keyboard?) event queue.
I'm not sure this could identify which DLL (if it's not originated by the material, see the defective keyboard hypothesis) is posting the events, but that's worth a try (Java for example, would enables to stuff a custom event queue that would trace info about a Java-poster).
Even if you can't identify the posting DLL, running the "key captuyre" on both the Windows host that has the Citrix window, and the Windows host that you are accessing via Citrix, may give you hints as to where the heck the key strokes originate...
Good luck, and keep us informed,
J. -
When I start my remote log in I currently alway get the message 'Citrix has quite unexpectedly' and the error message (posted below after this explanation). If I then leave it it seems to reconnect and stay connected, but sometimes not. Once a session is open I cant log back in again. Any ideas what's wrong? I'm using the latest version of Safari to connect.

Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.1 App-V package - activation
I've packaged Dragon Naturally Speaking 10.1 using App-V 4.6 SP3, & all functions that I have tested are working normally.
However, the one problem I can't seem to get past is that every time my Dragon user logs a different VDI (virtual desktop), Dragon asks to activate again, and it only has a limited number of activations before the license code is locked out. As our users
are connected at random to one of a large pool of VDI's when they log in, this is a problem.
I have been in contact with Nuance directly and with our software supplier, who are partnered with Nuance, and have been given a lot of conflicting information, but have not been able to resolve matters. This has been going for several weeks.
As I can see several topics that would indicate others have successfully sequenced Dragon NS before, I would like to ask how product activation was dealt with?
To clarify: I am NOT asking for anything illegal (keys, cracks, etc), and I already have a paid-for licence. I just need to get this running as it is a health & safety requirement for my user, and until I can resolve the activation problem, I'm stuck. How very odd that you post on a product that was developed by one of the original SoftGrid (previous name for App-V) QA Managers!
Any way, I don't know the specifics of Dragon, but the general approach is as follows:
Install the product without activation, start procmon and figure out what files/registries get modified.
Often, we just remove whatever that is and then activation happens the first time the user launches the app. Then, those changes are saved for that user and when he/she launches a new VDI session it just layers in.
In App-V 4.* this worked great as EVERYTHING followed the user. In App-V 5 some things do not. So what you want to do in procmon the client when you activate it the first time. Given what you've said, chances are, unless the user is also
an admin, that we are talking about a file that is written to a normally non-roaming area. In App-V 4.* this would be redirected correctly, but in App-V 5 it is redirected to the user's AppData/Local folder. So to fix this you create two scripts,
one for start of virtual environment and one for end of virtual environment. End of environment copies the file into the user's home drive/roaming folder. Start of VE restores the file (if present). TMurgent has a free tool AppV_Remediation
to use in the script that will do this for all files in the package by just providing the package GUID.
If the changes are registry based AND user is admin, then it could end up in HKLM for the package with a user SID. You can similarly back this up and restore it.

Deploying Apps through iPCU?
Is there a way to use the application provising part of iPCU for 3rd party apps, or is iTunes syncing the way to go? i.e. have a new batch of iPhones/iPads and want to install apps like the Citrix reciver.
Everything I've seen about the application install through iPCU is related to developing in-house and requesting a signage from Apple. I'm also assuming the MDM service can handle this in the future, but of course we're not there yet.
Just figured since I'm already in iPCU to setup new devices via configuration profiles, would be nice to manage the apps from here as well.I am wondering the same thing. I am configuring iPads for the enterprise and would like to download apps from the App Store, copy them to the Applications section of the IPCU and install them from there. However, when I do that, the apps will install but when I try to launch it on the iPad, the app just flashes and doesn't open.
Anyone have any ideas? -

I am looking to deploy Creative Cloud for team to a number of users. These users would be using Remote Apps published through Citrix. Has anyone deployed Creative Cloud through publishing them through Citrix. I'm not sure if it would work with the new licensing for Creative Cloud. I know Adobe set this up to be more of a workstation solution but this won't work for us. How does the Creative Cloud for team licensing work exactly for multiple users.

Hello experts,
since I can't really find what I'm looking for, I'm trying my luck here.
From all Tutorials and howtos I've found covering the integration of App-V into Citrix XenApp, never once have I read that it is nessecary to import the adml gpo templates and configure the App-V Client on the terminal server this way. The way I have understood
it until now, is that using the remote desktop app-v client, XenApp will configure the client through the integration kit.
But this is not happening on my test server. I have a App-V 5.0 SP1 environment with a Management Server and a Publishing Server. The Publishing Server is configured in the XenApp integration kit. But there are no applications showing up. I know this is
partially a Citrix topic, but I'm interested in the App-V components here.
So the question is - do I need to configure the Remote Desktop App-V Client using the ADML templates or not?
Best Regards,
FredWhat version of XenApp are you talking about?

Using Captivate in a Citrix environment
Folks, I've been asked if Captivate, if installed n a Citrix environment, will work effectively in that environment to create, edit and publish captures. Any experience of this anywhere?
OK. Understood.
I'm sure this has been tried before, but the only experience I've had so far with Citrix clients was where we needed to capture what was happeing on the Citrix screen to create tutorials for people needing to use Citrix. In that instance, we were using Captivate on the client machine, not over Citrix. It was severall years ago now and I cannot recall which version of Captivate I was using. Might have been version Cp2 or Cp3.
I do remember we had some issues getting Captivate to recognise the screen events to trigger the capture mechanism and had to resort to quite a bit of manual capturing to get all the screenshots we required. My concern would be that maybe operating entirely in a Citrix environment, where both Captivate AND the other apps were inside Citrix might introduce even more possibility of there being difficulty with capturing. Maybe others can chime in with their experiences and say if it works flawlessly or not.
I can't recall seeing anything official from the Adobe Captivate team about supporting the Citrix environment, but I have seen issues reported: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3043849
I've heard of other Adobe apps (e.g. Acrobat) being deployed over Citrix Metaframe, so in theory it's probably possible, though the issues I've heard of with these other apps tended to happen because they were dealing in largish file sizes. Captivate project files can get very large very quickly. So they might stand a chance of overloading your Citrix environment unless it was set up to specifically allow for them. -
Microsoft Sharepoint Designer 2013 encountered an error during setup
I'm trying to install SharePoint Designer 2013 on my system, but I keep getting this error with no other detail. Looking into the SetupExe log file that the event viewer pointed to didn't really identify anything that would point me
to the culprit (or at least nothing I could decipher). I am running Windows 7 (64 bit) and Office 2010 (32 bit). Anyone run into this before?I am also trying to install SP Designer 2013 (32-bit) on my Windows 7 Pro 64-bit OS with MS Office 2010 32-bit and getting the same error about 30% into the install. I have attempted to uninstall other 3rd party programs and apps for example Citrix
and Skype and still no success. I tried booting up in safe mode and get the same error right at the onset of the install.
Update: Tried a "clean boot" install and that also failed. -
