Apple lack of consistency?

Having been an Apple fan for many years I have become slightly disillusioned at the lack of consistency between products, especially the terrible user interface / remote of the Apple TV and now the iPod Nano 6th Gen.
I know this has been raised before and will probably be raised again but what's up with Album Artist support?  It works the same in every Apple device I own - iPod Touch, iPad, iPhone, Apple TV.  But not the Nano.  It just doesn't work at all.
I also know there are plenty of 'workarounds' but I have 5 different devices synced to the same iTunes and don't want to have to add a workaround for the Nano that detriments the experience on the other 4 devices.
Does anyone know of any plans to fix this in a future release of the Nano firmware, or a workaround that doesn't involve editing every song with a featured artist in my library?  It seems to have been a bugbear on many devices since the middle of the last decade, so surely it's on Apple's radar somewhere ?
Has anyone got an official word from Apple, ever, on this subject ?

I don't have a fix or any ideas on what to do with this because I never cared about album artist, just who I was listening to.
As far as a firmware update, there won't be one for the current iPod Nan because it is old. A new is possibly coming out next month and if so, you can see how that one works.

  • Apple Newbie : Creating consistent material with Pages, Keynote, Web page

    Hi All,
I am a recovering XP user with iLife and iWork developing materials for my business. I would like to project a uniform image from printed materials, to Keynote presentations, to web-site.
I do not want to go down the wrong path - can someone experienced suggest a jump-off point and strategy?
    Thanks in advance,
    David

Well, the first point would be to consider what you mean by consistent.
Is it color, is it fonts, is it shapes. Never underestimate the usefulness of having one shape that is used throughout your various projects. I focus on the corners of the shapes, and develop complete systems around those.
Once you have decided on those, most of the information cna be copied from one program to another. A masked image in Pages can be copied and pasted into iweb or keynote. Most shapes and their information and settings can be copied from one to another.
Your best bet for working around with this concept is to take a Pages template and see how hard it is to make a consistent Keynote theme and a consistent iWeb theme. Try something that looks complicated but is relatively simple. Do so with the Extreme Newsletter template in Pages and see what is necessary to carry the same 'flavor' from Pages to Keynote to iWeb.
    Have fun,
    Gerry.

  • Lack of consistency between folders in Elements 11 Organizer and Finder (mac). Why?

I use Elements 11 Organizer and Photoshop Elements Editor on a mac (OS X 10.8.2).
I experience problems after I made some changes in the Image-folder on the mac and after moving/deleting folders directly in Elements Organizer. Now there are noe consistency between folders/files visible in Finder/Pictures and in My Folders in Elements Organizer.
One example: Directly in Finder, I created a new folder and moved pictures from two folders which I then deleted. In Elements Organizer, I still see the old structure (no new folder - still the deleted folders included the picture files).
I also experience folders in Elements Organizer that should not exist. When I right click on the folder, the options "Reveal in Finder", "Rename Folder" and "Delete folder" are greyed out and not clickable.
I have tried to refresh Elements Organizer, close it and restart the mac - nothing helps.
    Can anyone please help me?

Not sure if you have used the 'My Folders' or 'Show folder list' in the left folder panel ? Those two ways to display and work with folders must be understood before doing experiments, especially if you use Finder/Explorer to control results. You need to give more details on your procedure to make things clear.
See the video about the 'New UI' in the welcome screen.
And of course, Barbara is right about giving the priority to managing media files by tags albums and dedicated organizer tools.

  • DOA iMac - Apple "Lack of" Care

My 24" 2.8 GHz iMac arrived on Wed 8/22. I was disappointed to find that it had a malfunctioning fan and Tech Support deemed it DOA and needed to be returned. I was informed that shipping labels would be overnighted to me. Apple would not send a replacement until the original was returned.
    Two days later....no labels.
Another call to technical support...20 minutes on hold and then a helpful guy who says he'll call Returns directly and solve my problem (no useful info had been recorded in my case file). He calls me back later and says HE CANNOT GET THROUGH TO ANYONE IN RETURNS but has "escalated" my issue via e-mail. What a joke.
Apple seems content to hang on to my money (maybe I should ask for interest?!?!), but meanwhile I have no indication of when I'll receive a working unit and no way of contacting anyone with the ability or willingness to do something about it.
Any suggestions for cutting through the red tape?

Unfortunately, not all machines will arrive in perfect working order, some do get rough handling during transit. This is true of all makes not just Apple.
However, from my own personal experiences of Apple Customer Care, the treatment end users recieve from Apple is awful. I recently had 2 replacement Mac Pro's sent out the first of of which was damaged in transit. While I did eventually recieve a replacement unit, it took over 8 months for Apple to decide my original unit was beyond help and agreed to a replacement being sent out.
During the 8 months, the original unit was not useable and so was packed back up awaiting a solution (fortunately I had a trusted PowerMac G5 Quad to use as a back up so I was able to get some work done but did however build up quite a backlog of work and eventually had to turn work down in an attempt to ease the amount of backlog. The work I had to decline cost me several thousands of pounds in lost income which Apple gave no consideration to or compensation for.
I purchased the extended warranty which Apple transferred to the replacement machine but decided to dock the original 8 months from the warranty period. Hardly good customer relations. Apple agreed the original machine was in effect a lemon and agreed it could not be used yet the penalised the replacement machine from having the full 3 year warranty period.
After this episode and experience, having had to fight to get anywhere with technical support, eventually I escalated the problem to their Executive Relations Deprtment, 8 months on I get a solution which should have been offered immediately. Not happy. Apple just adding insult to injury.
The replacement Mac Pro has so far worked without issue and is a joy to use, unfortunately Apple's after care leaves a very bad taste in the mouth. They really do need to get it sorted out.
When it is time to replace my current network of systems, in light of my experience with Apple since the Intel switch, I doubt I will be replacing any system with another Mac. I will have no choice but to switch back to Windows based systems unless Apple really get their game and build quality back on top form. OS X is a joy to use, I just wish the machines Apple provide to run this platform on were up to the same high standard as the OS.
Hardly as Apple state on their web site "absolutely flawless integration of hardware and software", "Macs just work". The jury is still out on that.
This is not an Apple hate post, just an honest post from an Apple customer sharing my experience with Apple so far. I have to admit when I was using PowerPC based machines I only ever had one need to call tech support and the problem was sorted out pretty quickly, however since I swapped to Intel based machines, the need to contact Customer Care has been increased significantly and the over all quality of the machines I have received has been poor.
Keep at it if you are unhappy, escalate the problem to Executive Relations if need be and when you do get your replacement machine I hope it is a better experience all round for you.

  • Monitor apple replaced th one any ideas what that could of been2010

my 27" i5 2.8 ghz imac i bought in sept.2010 had dark shadows all over the monitor apple replaced the computer with a new one just a week ago any ideas what this could of been

Thanks Mike. I had a feeling that might be what it was, though you are correct, in that I won't be able to fully find the problem online. I guess I just wanted a bit of advice as I'd seen numerous problems similar to this, but none exactly the same.
I kept flicking between software and hardware as to what I believed was the problem, but the lack of consistency has me believing its hardware.
Frustrating as it's not within warranty, but we'll see if I can get some concrete information from a store.
    Thanks again.

  • Lack of LAB and CMYK support in Lightroom is plain dumb

There is a lack of consistency in Lightroom if it allows you to elect to edit an image in Photoshop but then it can't follow through and display either a LAB PSD or a CMYK PSD. Both these file types are widely used by Pro-photographers. Afterall there is a whole bunch of stuff that's easier to do in Lab or CMYK rather than in RGB. The lightroom development team seem to suggest that photographers shouldn't be doing anything more advanced than Lightroom can handle. Well if you look at pre-print sharpening Lightroom is still awful - LOW/MED/HIGH just doesn't cut it and isn't at anything like pro level. To get any sensible preprint sharpening you've almost gotta go to photoshop. For many images sharpening is best done on the L channel of Lab (along with a whole bunch of other adjustment layer corrections). Most people like to keep these layers and so returning a master file to RGB just isn't an option. Sure there is no further need for editing such an image in Lightroom, but as part of Lightroom's function is DAM then its fairly essential to be able to at least preview all your image files - to know where they are and what you have.
Its just no good boasting about Lightroom's ability to search through images using metadata etc if ultimately it can't find and display your -finished- image versions 'cos they just happen to be Lab or CMYK PSDs.
If Adobe Lightroom team are promoting Lightroom as a pro-photographers tool them you gotta listen to how pro-photographers work and not get lost in your own ideology based rhetoric of keeping Lightroom pure. I haven't yet found two pro-photographers with identical "pure" workflows.
Come on Adobe - we don't want to edit them - we just want to be able to preview them in Library ;-)

Have to say as a working professional who earns his keep from doing raw conversions, proof prints, cutouts etc Lightroom's lack of CMYK support is very much a pain in the a**. I'm not asking for a full set of CMYK editing tools - I've got those in Photoshop thanks very much.
What I am asking for is at least the ability to round trip files from Lightroom into Photoshop, convert to CMYK and reimport the CMYK version into the catalog alongside the RGB file from which it originated and then to allow me to open the original CMYK file back into Photoshop without any tweaks being applied by Lightroom. This would allow Lightroom to really fill the role of a DAM in our studio and allow us much simpler workflow tracking than at present. As things stand we have to save the files in separate locations from our RGB versions on our server and then catalog them using another application.
Come on Adobe please listen to your professional user base as I know I'm not alone in these requiements and the studios that I've shown Lightroom to have all ended up asking the question "What about the final CMYK versions?"
BTW I'm in full agreement with Ian on the other points and without sounding snotty to Don - who I have read many interesting and sensible posts from - maybe if you don't want to cover this ground again just walk a different direction and leave those of us who do NEED this feature to discuss the best way of implenting it. I have also sent this request to Adobe so I'm not just a moaner who sit's here doing nothing about the issues that affect me.
    Cheers for now.

  • Will family sharing allow multiple Apple IDs to backup to the same Mac?

So currently, my family shares one Apple ID so we can share purchases.  We also share the same iCloud account.  I think that technically you can share one Apple ID for purchases and use multiple iCloud accounts, but that seems confusing.
Anyway, so my wife is getting a new iPhone soon and would like it if we didn't see each other's podcasts in the Podcasts app, etc, so I'm wondering if, now that we have family sharing coming, it would be a good idea for her to get her own Apple ID.  However, we have one "Master iMac" that serves to backup all the iDevices in our home and has our shared family library of music, movies, etc.  If she gets her own Apple ID, will she still be able to back her new iPhone up to this iMac or will she be forced to use her iCloud account for her phone's backup?  iTunes on the iMac uses the current Apple ID, which we all share.
Apple IDs have consistently been the single most frustrating thing for us and the approach for sharing one ID has worked well.  I wish Apple had come out with Family Sharing years ago.  Anyway, now I want to make the transition as painless as possible.

I apologize, but my grammar and spelling were full of errors They "received" iPad minis...
And I am afraid that they will "lose" (not love) all of their data.
    Thanks.

  • Apple TV Picture now too big for the 16/9 screen, wrong resolution ?

Now that I've added a new Samsung Home Theatre system to my new Samsung 46" HDTV, the Apple
TV picture is displaying way too big, cutting off about 1/2 the picture!?! The resolution seems to be set wrong ( 720 ?). The other inputs DVD and DirectTV display OK. I have the TV set for 16x9. It was working fine before I plugged the AppleTV into the new Home Theatre System. I then tried replugging the AppleTV directly into the TV's other HDMI port but the problem still remains.I can't find any way of readjusting the resolution. Any suggestions ?

Problem solved. It's a faulty HDMI port on my TV.
I have been plagued by intermittent random problems with my old Apple TV, especially where there was a blank screen but audio could be heard - solved by a restart. Then today I got the new Apple TV and it displayed as though there was overscan (actually - way more than overscan should cause now that I can see what it SHOULD look like). The final piece of the puzzle was trying to play content purchased previously on iTunes - no HDCP. Finally something pointing to the HDMI connection. I did a bit of troubleshooting - swapping cables, swapping HDMI ports and problem solved. Of the 3 HDMI ports on my TV - when the Apple TV is plugged into port 2 I get this massive overscan and HDCP doesn't work. In ports 1 and 3 it works perfectly. Thankfully the problem with the new Apple TV was consistent enough for me to easily diagnose the problem - unlikely the random nature of the issues I was having with the old Apple TV. Time for a new TV - hurrah! (it's under warranty...)

An Apple ID which consists of a non-Apple address can perfectly well be used to create and sign into an iCloud account (most Apple ID's take this form). Your problem is that you can't create an iCloud account on Windows: you can only do it on a Mac or an iOS device. Once created on one of those you can sign into it on Windows using the iCloud Control Panel.

  • Extending an Apple wireless network beyond reach of the base station

Hello; I have an apple network that consists of one AirPort Extreme with two airport expresses acting as wifi extenders for the Extreme. I need to extend my wireless network even further, beyond the distance where another airport express could connect to the extreme. Could I connect, via Ethernet cable, a third airport express to one of the two existing airport express's to accomplish this? If so, would I be using the WAN or LAN port? Thanks!

Yes. You would configure the third Express as a roaming type network with the existing extended network. Since this Express will be in bridge mode, it really doesn't matter which port you use. However, for consistency, I would recommend that you use the WAN port for the connection.

  • My iphone 5 does not recognize my certified apple lightning cable

my iphone 5 cable which hours before was charging my phone, has suddenly decided to go invalid. The cable is the same, its the one I recieved with my phone but suddenly it wont charge my phone anymore. If i plug it into different outlets, different power adapters, even the included one as well, it keeps giving me the (this device is not certified by apple and may have problems) message. Does anyone know how to get this to stop or at least get my phone to charge?

You think that's bad. I help manage communication for our fire and emergency services. We literally had thousands of apple products, THOUSANDS. Then they pulled the ios7 cable blocking software thing. They made me look like an idiot since I had recommended switching to apple products for consistency for our techs.
When ios7 was released hundreds of our fire crews, sea and response workers started losing their phones. All of them were dying In the field. We didn't have any major catastrophes when ios7 came out but we ran a risk analysis on apple products and the potential for them to cause widespread damage or collapse is fatal so I've been spending the last 6 months phasing them out. Basically crews would say we need 3 phones. Id send them three all set up. Now they ask for three phones and I say to them you can pick any. I tell them htc or samsung because they all know how the cable block screwed some of the response workers in remote areas. They didn't have phones for weeks. I had to spend THOUSANDS couriering 'certified cables' all over the state. To make it worse the cables are the WORST they break constantly just below the connection. That floppy piece that always breaks.
The WORST part was I went into the apple store with 40 cables. Their response was 'I've never seen that problem before...' And they told me I would have to buy all new cables... Thousands of them. A USB cable... That costs 50c to make that every other phone htc samsung Nokia complies with and makes...
Anyhow long story short we are phasing out all apple products. The 'frequent locations' (go look in settings privacy, location services, system services, frequent locations, frequent locations and be prepared to be freaked out...) and ad tracking was another feature on ios7 that went on on people's phones. No one knows how to go any deeper than 2 clicks in the settings so apple says they aren't hidden but we all know they are at 6 steps including unlock.
Not kidding when I say thousands of products now we recalled and threw away because of such a simple thing. Get the feeling they jumped the shark and are heading downhill from here on out.

  • IPod 5G music alarms won't go off!

    Hello!
Well, my 5th Gen iPod Video (30G, revision A-2005) has a heck of a time with alarms that play playlists.
I usually have 3 or 4 alarms set to play various music to wake me up, as it takes 4 alarms over an hour to get me, a college student, up in the morning! It plays through my upper-medium end, loud computer speakers, so that's not an issue. However, the iPod alarms seem very flaky. Sometimes all 3 or 4 will work. Sometimes, the first will play, but none of the others. Sometimes, it never goes off at all! I have been unable to pin down the cause, although it seems to work better if I allow the iPod to sleep on it's own (that is, let it sit until it times out and shuts down), and I leave hold off.
The lack of consistancy is annoying, and bad for grades - I missed my morning class friday as the thing didn't work. This is particuarly odd as my 4th Gen, 20G clickwheel iPod works just fine, without a hitch, every time. However, I'd like to have more than one alarm.... My alarm clock/radio just beeps, and that won't always wake me up.
Anyone have this trouble? Anyone have an idea on fixes? Any input is appreciated.
Odd, it's supposed to be playing now, and it's not.... good thing I woke up early... @_@

  • ICloud messing up contacts and calendar.

Ok, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to get back to only backing up through my macbook. My iPhone currently has 305 contacts (some of which are duplicate linked contact cards). Also, I have groups in my address book and on my iPhone I have two sections: "from my mac" and "from iCloud," and of course there's the "all contacts" section which I tend to use more because of the lack of consistency on the iPhone due to iCloud.
My issue is that I would like to completely go back to being without iCloud (because for now I'm unable to back up my macbook to iCloud -- need to upgrade the software in the future). So what I need help with is how to get some of the contacts out of iCloud and back to the address book on the computer. Because I turned off "iCloud backup" in iTunes but the iCloud issue is still happening on the iPhone. Now if I go into iCloud on the iPhone and turn of contacts it says "What would you like to do with the previously synced iCloud contacts on your iPhone?" The two options are keep on my iPhone and delete from my iPhone. Now I don't know what damage would be done with either option. If I delete I don't know what I might loose and if I keep it I'm guessing I'll keep all the duplicates. Same thing happens if I turn off the contacts. Now, I don't know what happens if you delete your iCloud account on the iPhone....
I just want to know which way is easier to get the contacts/calendar to sync without having to add everything again or without risking loosing everything. Please help!

I don't think you have any choice now.  You can always delete the iCloud account after doing so and not use it.
I'm afraid I'm not sure what else to suggest other than to enter your password.  If you don't know what it is, you'll have to contact Apple support for assistance by calling the Apple account security team for the country you're in: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5699.

  • Manually defining Home directory path- reverts to "none"

Our OS-X 10.4.8 setup centralises home directories on our server, no users have homedirs on local Macs.
In WGM, I select a student, then the "Home" tab. As we nest homedir locations into folders by graduating year, I need to set the path manually. Sometimes, this works. Other times, no matter what I type into the path fields, when I click "save", the homedir location reverts to "None". I can't see why! I'm properly authenticated to WGM, and in fact I'm running it as root on the actual server!
I have had this bug consistently since 10.4 Server came out and NONE of the patches since then have fixed it, despite bringing it to Apple's attention several times.
    Not happy.

I used passenger to create and import the accounts and agree that it is an essential tool, well worth the money.
No, I was trying to tweak the homedir path for a dozen or so users I had made a small typo in, and this problem of the path reverting to "none" is very, very frustrating. The thing is: sometimes it works and sometimes I have to attempt editing the path three or four times before clicking "save" makes it stick. It's the lack of consistency of this bug that causes me the most grief (and make no mistake, it's a bug in Apple's software that they haven't fixed in over a year)
