Arch Package 7zip, Bzip2, Gzip comparison (newer one below)

EDIT (18 April 2005):  I redid this test with a larger package sample.  See post below.
I've been fooling around with p7zip lately (you can get the PKGBUILD via the AUR).  The most recent version is supposed to take advantage of some pretty substantial speed enhancements.  Anyway, I thought I'd compare 7zip on arch with bzip2 and gzip to see how they would compress some arch packages.  Here are the (non-scientific and non-canonical) results.  (This was done on a pentium2-class celeron, so tests on most other i686s will yield smaller time differences between formats most likely)
Here's the packages I chose to test:
acroread-7.0.0-1.pkg.tar.gz
fakeroot-1.2.2-2.pkg.tar.gz
gecko-sdk-1.7.3-1.pkg.tar.gz
gtk-smooth-engine-0.5.8-3.pkg.tar.gz
hal-0.4.7-1.pkg.tar.gz
hotplug-2004_09_23-4.pkg.tar.gz
lame-3.96.1-2.pkg.tar.gz
mozilla-common-1.0-2.pkg.tar.gz
mrxvt-0.4.0-1.pkg.tar.gz
mtools-3.9.9-2.pkg.tar.gz
openldap-2.2.24-1.pkg.tar.gz
sdl_ttf-2.0.6-2.pkg.tar.gz
xmms-cdparanoia-0.1-1.pkg.tar.gz
xorg-11R6.8.2-2.pkg.tar.gz
xpdf-3.00-7.pkg.tar.gz
zip-2.3-3.pkg.tar.gz
zlib-1.2.2-1.pkg.tar.gz
(Looking back on this now, I realize didn't get a good batch of 1MB to 10MB samples included.)
I ungziped these samples, then rezipped them in 7zip, bzip2, and gzip once again.  Here are the (very approximate) times it took each to zip these tarfiles sequentially (the 7zip is especially fuzzy since I screwed up during the compression):
EDIT:  I redid the compression in a more accurate manner and got the following results:
7zip compress: 19:41
Bzip2 compress: 8:56
Gzip compress: 3:00
One caveat:  Approximately half of 7zip's time was spent on acroread.  On all other files, it was approximately as fast as bzip2, and (by my perception) a little bit quicker on xorg.
Later, I decompressed all of them in sequence, yielding these times (much more accurate):
7zip decompress: 1:23
Bzip2 decompress: 2:37
Gzip decompress: 34 seconds
Here are the comparative sizes of the compressed files grouped by compression format.  The percentages refer to the compressed archive's size compared to the tar it compressed.  The overall percentages refer to the commulative sizes of the compressed archives compared to the commulative sizes of the tarfiles.  Smaller percentages equal smaller files.

Overall, you can tell that 7zip files are consistantly much smaller than gzip or bzip2, albeit taking much longer to compress.  It should be noted again that 7zips long compression time on acroread may be atypical, and that in a grander scheme it would be more comparable to bzip2 in speed.  Unlike bzip2, which compressed files just a few percentages smaller than gzip, 7zip was much more effective at compressing at significantly smaller sizes.  In the longer run, if 7zip and p7zip continue to increase compression and decompression speed, it might become a viable alternative to gzip.

I redid the test with a larger/more diversified package set.  For the sake of brevity, I'll put the interesting info at the beginning:
Here are the times:
7zcompress: 53:08
bz2compress: 23:26
gzcompress: 8:07
7zdecompress: 3:01
bz2decompress: 5:54
gzdecompress: 1:14
Here are the commulative size comparisons of the formats with percentages refering to their size vis-a-vis the original tarfile (see below for details:
Cummulative tar size: 673329
gzip: 251219 (37%)
bzip2: 223803 (33%)
7zip: 183214 (27%)
Conclusions:
It appears the compression latencies seen with acroread previously are pretty consistent and not just a fluke.  On the other end, 7zip this time appears to be a bit faster in decompression in relation to bzip2 than the previous round.  Moreover, although 7zip generates archives that are significantly smaller than their gzip and bzip2 equivalents, this round reveals a smaller margin of difference between bzip2 archives and 7zip archives.  In general, all three formats yielded better compression sizes than in the previous round.  7zip looks like a promising compression utility, especially if it can cut down on the compression time, which appears comparatively abhorrent on my celeron1 450mhz.

  • [SOLVED] Replacing an existing Arch drive with a new one

I want to swap out my SATA drive with a new one, without reloading anything, nor borking anything..... The original drive is 1TB, and the new HDD is also 1TB, albeit from different manufacturers.
I have WIn 7 in a 256Gb partition, and Arch in the extended partitions worth 750Gb. The drive is a 1 TB drive. (Hitachi)
Arch is my primary OS where I do all my design/cad work and office related stuff. Windows is only used as a gaming platform.
I have been given a NIB 1Tb Seagate Constellation enterprise class drive. It is significantly faster than my existing drive. I wish to switch the drives out.
I am really wanting to avoid a complete reload of both OS's.
My son tells me to use "dd" which I am familiar with, but warns that upon reboot Windows will likely have issues and be very slow.
I have a heavy workload at the moment, and just don't have a day to spend reloading both OS's from scratch.
Is there a better way to image a drive, partition scheme, boot sector, the whole smash (I have a 2TB drive to hold the image) .......R&R the old drive, install the new drive, then have the software then copy back over to the new drive the image with the partitioning scheme and boot sector (syslinux) without borking anything up in either OS?
Assistance is greatly appreciated. I have not needed to do this before...and I'm nervous.
    Thank You!
    Sincerely and respectfully,
    Dave

FWIW, check if your new drive is one meant for the newer 4K sectors.  If so, you should only blindly dd it if the old drive was also set up this way.  If not, then you may need to align the copied data to the 4K sectors, or set up the partitions on the new drive appropriately.  (Western Digital, for example, has an align tool that buzzes through the drive edging everything over to align properly.  If you don't do this and your drive is copied out of alignment, then you can get some slowdown.)
Quite possibly not an issue for you, and there's more to it than I've typed.  It's not hard to do right if needed.  GParted can partition on the correct boundaries, and clonezilla quite possibly is aware as well (I haven't looked). You just need to see if your drives are set up as advanced format (or whatever it's called) and copy accordingly if needed.
I only mention this because there are currently mixed drive types out there and a surprising number of people don't know anything about this and might be taken by surprise.

  • I have lost the shipping packaging for the ipod nano recall. How do i get a new one?

Ive lost the shipping packaging- when i try to apply for a new one i am unable to as my ipod nano serial number is already in use. How do i ship my ipod with the correct packaging/ get new packaging for it to be shipped?
    Thanks

Not sure, but posting in the iPhone forum is certainly NOT going to get you closer to your answer.

  • My own package of the same name as one in the repo...

In a nutshell, how does pacman handle a user-created package of the same name as one in the repo?  I ask because I'd like to customize the build options on a package that's in the official repo.  Is it best to simply change the name of my package or is pacman smart enough to know that package xyz installed locally is not to be upgraded to package xyz from the repo?

thayer wrote:What I typically do is bump the release number to 99, such as foopackage-1.0-99.  By doing it this way pacman won't upgrade the package unless a new upstream release is made, such as 1.1 in the previous example.
Similarly, if you build a package locally to fix some packaging bug, and you expect that you'll be interested in any updates at all, I bump the release number by 0.1 so it's bigger than the version I'm fixing but smaller than whatever the Arch maintainer will supply next.

  • Users of Eclipse - Arch packages or self-maintained?

I've always used my own self-maintained Eclipse installation (in /home/LinuxProg) since I first started using Eclipse back in my Ubuntu days. Just today I was trying out eclim and had problems getting it working on that install, so I figured I would try out the Arch packages, and they 'just worked'.
I previously kept my Eclipse separate since it has its own updater and I would sometimes use it from Ubuntu, but I haven't done that in a year now so I figured there was no more advantage to using it the way I had before. So, a question to Eclipse users, how many of you DON'T use the Arch packages?

I maintain separate Eclipse installations by a simple, free and smart app named Pulse from poweredbypulse.com.
The advantages of using Pulse are many because it automagically updates everything from the standard environment to every plug-in (small like svn or "big" like pdt, cdt, jdt with no issues), it lets you propagate in just a few minutes a complete set of profiles to many different workstations that will share every option you have chosen from one place, it is cross platform and you can trust Genuitec because they are true Eclipse contributors that will never spam you in any way.
It's so easy to run multiple Eclipse installations with no binaries duplicates that I have been never looking for distros packages for a couple of years.
I really think that Pulse should be a must for every Eclipse user who is not interested in becoming an expert of the Eclipse inner details, but just a satisfied and a proficient user of a fully customized/able environment.
While I appreciate your contribution and suggestion, I think the overall tone of your post sounds just like a marketing video. Seriously, 'you can trust X because Y'?
In any case, I may look into that once I'm done with my PhD. Thanks.
Yes, you are probably right, but I am not paid by them at all. They are just good enough at it that I am simply so happy that I wanted to share the experience and give my 2cents tip.
Edit: Of course, Genuitec would like you to download and buy commercially packed profiles for Java and other languages, but the community free profiles are just nice for my professional use and I have never received any spamming mail from them on the account I had created for that purpose and a year ago I switched my email account to the one I am currently using for all the open source stuff.
Edit: If you do not pay a sort of yearly subscription (I have never paid) they will not let you quickly search the database that contains what is available and I have sometimes missed a useful plugin such as Eclox for Doxygen, but browsing for myself was enough to find it and add it to my profiles with some other add-ons I would not have otherwise discovered. Eheheh...
Edit.If you are interested in team development and - in this case - profiles sharing and cutomization depending on the user level, you have to subscribe but this is not needed by a single user like me who is trying to reinvent a new job.

  • What is involved in removing an image from a PDF document and inserting a new one?

Our form producing process is very typical:
    (1) Start with a TIFF image, create a fresh PDF document.
    (2) By adding items such as links and interactive fields, convert the read-only document into an interactive form.
Step (2) may take a lot of work, but fortunately when modifications are needed, it is always possible to edit the individual items. No need to redo the whole form from scratch.
There are some cases, however, in which we have invested a substantial amount of work in Step (2), but we need to modify the underlying image, removing it and replacing it with a new one. We obviously don't want to destroy all the work done in (2).
I envision the procedure as taking a rug from underneath a person and putting a new one.
What is involved in doing that? Can that be done at the JavaScript level? Are there commercial packages that can do that? Is the Acrobart SDK required?

  • Switch to existed application instead of open a new one on Cinnamon

    Hi all,
I am currently using Cinnamon as my desktop environment in Arch.
Before that I used Unity on Ubuntu. Unity is an awesome thing.  One feature I liked most is that when you press "Super+1,2...", you can switch the corresponding application on the launcher very quickly(Just like you are using shortcuts on the Windows launcher). Unless the application is not started, the shortcut will start a new one.
On Cinnamon, I bind some keys (like Super + 1,2...) in system settings (Cinnamon System Settings -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts -> Custom Shortcuts) to start my applications. But I can't get the effect as I described above. When I just want to switch an existed one, the keys will still launch a new one.(Of course, obviously according to my setting).
So my question is: Can I bind some keys to "Open or Switch to existed application" like it on Unity or Windows?
    Very grateful for any hints!

Hi, I don't think there is a way currently do the Unity feature that you are asking for on Cinnamon right now.
I can see problems with implementing such an idea on Cinnamon though in the case where people have two panels.
Thanks for you reply. I hope I can get this done one day on Cinnamon.

  • Hard Drive Failed, New one Installed, Problems of course

Hellooo Everyone This is sort of a last ditch effort to see if I can fix this myself or if I am going to have to shell out 500 dollars to get my laptop back in working order. So I have a HP dv6-6140 laptop. A few weeks ago the hard drive failed and I purchased and installed a new one, ran windows 7 and have it on my laptop. When I try to hook up an ethernet cable to download and install the drivers for the laptop the ethernet cable is not recognized it says no internet connection blah blah blah. Ok so I downloaded the drivers to a flash drive and installed some of them onto my laptop, no changes.  So I was thinking of purchasing the recovery discs which im assuming include the drivers for the notebook for 35 dollars which is paltry in comparison to what I would pay if I took it to a computer repair shop, but how do I know that would work? I dont. I am looking for ideas or anything that I may be missing. I am not computer illiterate but I am not an expert. Any advice would be greatly appreciated Thanks!
    Kelly

    Hi, Kelly:
On your model normally it is very important to install the chipset driver first and reboot before attempting to install the ethernet (wired network) driver.
The chipset drivers install some motherboard driver which I think enables the communication to the ethernet adapter.
The problem is, HP does not include the necessary chipset drivers for your model (which I assume is a HP Pavilion dv6-6140us Entertainment Notebook PC).
So...Download and install the AMD Chipset Drivers and reboot.  You want the first driver listed on the webpage.
    http://support.amd.com/en-us/download/chipset?os=Windows%207%20-%2064
Then see if the ethernet adapter works again or reinstall the ethernet driver after you reboot the PC.
The parts list indicates your model comes with a Broadcom wireless/bluetooth card.
Here are the links to the drivers you need for that...

Rather than do that, which means starting over from scratch, losing all your edits, organisation and so on, why not simply use iPhoto Library Manager to revert the Library to the older version? Easier, less destructive.
The instructions on that are here
If you really want to start over: you can access the Originals folder simply by going to your Pictures Folder and finding the iPhoto Library there. Right (or Control-) Click on the icon and select 'Show Package Contents'. A finder window will open with the Library exposed.

  • Best Practice to Export Solman Customer Data to a new one

    Hi Solman experts,
We are facing a new project to move a huge Solution Manager VAR Scenario to a new one server, the biggest problems is system landscape from customer data (LMDB) and incident management customer data (ITSM), also mopz, ewa and sap service delivery that has request from customers to SAP and is Stored in solution Manager.
The information that we have to export to a new Solution Manager is:
    Customers: +300 aprox.
    Systems: +900 aprox.
    - Solution Manager Configuration "Managed system Setup" for around +900 productive systems.
    - Customer data in LMDB and SMSY ( product systems, tech.systems, logical components, solutions, etc... ).
    - VAR Scenario data from: ITSM (with communication with SAP).
    - VAR Scenario data from: Mopz, ewa, Sap engagement and service delivery, Solution Documentation.
We decided to do that to user a flesh installation of Solution Manager SP11 with better system resources, better than migrate our existing one.
What do you think that is the best way to migrate customer data from a SAP Solution Manager SP08  to a new server with SAP Solution Manager SP11 ?
    Thanks,

  • Will Apple exchange my iPod touch 4g with a new one if my current one is deffective

Ok so, I got my iPod touch 4g (white) on June 19th after i made a bet with my moms boyfriend to not drink pop for a year
So when I opened the iPod, it wouldnt connect to wi-fi. Guys, dont ask me to reset network settings or anything, because..
IVE TRIED E-V-E-R-Y-T-H-I-N-G, but nothing has worked. So I called Apple and the guy on the phone said to go and make
an appointment at the Genius Bar, so i did, for 1:30pm today.
So my question is: Since the guy told me it's probably a deffective product, will Apple exchange my current iPod
for a new one? (my current one has no scratches, still has the headphones & charger, with the manuals, the box, stickers & everything)
    Thank youu

what do you mean by a refurbished one?
Like a used one?? But what if i return the whole packaging (i kept the manuals & stuff, like everything )
Could the person at the Genius Bar then give me a new one if I return the whole packaging ?
Lol sorry for all the questions, I'm just really worried :/

  • Is there a way to get my songs from my old ipod to my new one?

i was just wondering if there is a way to get my songs from my old ipod nano to my new ipod nano because some of the songs i have are not in my itunes... so if there is a way to get my songs from my old ipod to my new one can someone tell me how please

You can't copy directly from one iPod to another. If the songs on the old one aren't in iTunes you need to copy them back and update the new one from there. If you have any iTunes Music Store purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers was introduced with iTunes 7. You'll find details in this article: Copying iTunes Store purchases from your iPod or iPhone to a computer
The transfer of content from sources such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod. You'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos, podcasts and games as well. Have a look at the web pages and documentation, this is just a small selection of what's available, they are generally quite straightforward. You can read reviews and comparisons of some of them here:
Wired News - Rescue Your Stranded Tunes
    Comparison of iPod managers
TuneJack Windows Only (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
    iPod2PC Windows Only
    iDump Windows Only
    SharePod Windows Only
    iPodRip Mac & Windows
    YamiPod Mac and Windows
    Music Rescue Mac & Windows
    Floola Mac & Windows
iGadget Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iRepo Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
iPod Access Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible)
TouchCopy Mac & Windows (iPhone and iPod Touch compatible - Windows version only)
There's also a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to a Mac or PC. The procedure is a bit involved and won't recover playlists but if you're interested it's available on page 2 at this link: Copying Content from your iPod to your Computer - The Definitive Guide
Whichever of these retrieval methods you choose, I would also advise that you get yourself an external hard drive and back your stuff up, relying on an iPod as your sole backup is not a good idea and external drives are comparatively inexpensive these days, you can get loads of storage for a reasonable outlay.

  • Do refurbished iPods come in the same box as the new ones?

I was wondering if refurbished iPods come in the same box as the new ones? In other words, if you didn't know it was refurbished, would everything look and feel the same, even down to the packaging of the product?
    Thanks.
    Message was edited by: jmFightSpam

I am not sure in your country. In Hong Kong, the service centre will only pack the refurbished iPod with a plastic bag. They would not give us an extra box.
The refurbished iPods look 100% new to me (I have got three refurbished in the past few years)

  • Uninstall of old products while new ones are running

Maybe a little paranoid, but I need to ask. We recently did the parallel upgrade/migration for Messaging from 5.2hf1.25 to JES MS 6.1hf.02 on the same server. So, we have the old version still installed in a different path than the new one. I want to know if it will be safe to uninstall the old one using the uninstall tool, or should I just delete that directory? If use the uninstall tool that came with MS5.2, will it remove anything that both versions could possibly be using (packages/patches)?
What about other iPlanet components like iDA, webserver?

I can't imagine that uninstalling 5.2 would bother 6.x. ditto iDA
When you;re running the uninstaller for iMS, you have the option to preserve the mailstore. If it's still in the same place, you will need to do that.
