ARD Admin problem

I'm running ARD 3.4 in a school with 26 iMacs from early 2006 in a lab. Everything was working fine until I had to replace two machines due to hardware failure. I replaced them with the same model computer, restored them from the same image that the rest used, and called it good. I administer ARD from another iMac, early 2008 20" in the building. I went to install some software and found the two I had replaced not working, call them #1 and #3. I removed them from my list, ran the scanner, and found the machines were simply using different IP addresses, so I re-added them to my list. ARD works as usual for all the machines except 1 & 3, listing them as offline, but I am still able to control them (any other tasks fail because the computers are "offline"). I've gone through every setting, both on the machines, and in ARD and the only difference I can find is that ARD reports 1 & 3 as being administered by a computer with a different IP address than the others - I've pinged this IP address and gotten no response. The working computers also have a green light next to the admin machine name, while 1 & 3 do not. I click the edit button at the bottom of this page, but it doesn't actually let me edit anything, regardless of which computer I'm checking.
Has anyone else run into this problem? Any suggestions?

Hi jhana,
I've been combing the boards because I too am having this very same kind of thing happen.
In my case, I moved and have been attempting to recreate the office I had back in AUG 2010. Started setting it all up in January and was delayed due to a lot of hardware failures. Am finally getting around to setting up ARD and my computers are not working with ARD as they did in the past. Many are showing up as Offline. I decided to throw away the prefs and thought it would give me a fresh start, but now many computers on the network are not even showing up!
Misery loves company, but I sure would like to solve this and get happy.
Suggestions anyone?
ARD 3.4 Administered from an iMac PowerPC G5, and the Ethernet & Airport network has 3 more iMacs, a MacMini, and two PowerMacs, and a PowerBook G5, and sometimes an iBook. Things were working great before I moved. Network is configured a bit differently that before, but since I set it up, file sharing seemed to be working OK, so then went I went to set up ARD 3.4 things are not right.
Why?
Thanks in advance and so long for now, TOM

  • Help! Problem downgrading from ARD Admin 3.0 to 2.2; LAN clients still 2.2.

Hi gang! This is my first post here. I work as a technician in a university computer lab with 250 machines. About 10% of these are Macs, and we manage them with Mike Bombich's NetRestore, Faronics Deep Freeze, and Apple Remote Desktop. All clients are running ARD 2.2.
I installed ARD Admin 3.0 on our office eMac to see some of the new features. Sadly, most of them will not work until you upgrade the clients to 3.0. I aso dislike how a majority of older commands from 2.2 (like UNIX commands, Lock screen, etc), are suddenly not working in 3.0. How convenient! Just upgrade your client software and presto! Not happening, yet.
So I went to uninstall the ARD Admin from my machine. Here is what I did to roll back: I have deleted anything to do with Apple Remote Desktop from the following folders:
    /Applications/
    /Library/Application support/Apple/
    /Library/Preferences/
    /Library/Receipts/
    ~/Library/Application Support/
    ~/Library/Preferences/
I reinstalled the software (it said "Install" not Upgrade) and launched the freshly installed ARD 2.2 Admin. It prompted me for my serial number and then I sat waiting for over 30 seconds for the main screen to appear. Finally it spat an error message at me, then crashed: "The Remote Desktop Administrator failed to start due to an unexpected error."
I can't find this in the KBase, or perhaps I'm using the wrong search terms. What did I do wrong, and how can I fix it?
    eMac 800Mhz, TiBook 700MHz   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   In lab: 4 x Intel iMacs, 24 x Quicksilver G4s

Remove ARD again, using the instructions here.
Then reinstall your 2.2 ARD administrator. If you have an earlier version of ARD 2 on your installation disk, make sure you update it to 2.2, either through Software Update or via the downloadable updater, before you try and launch the administration application for the first time.
    Hope this helps.
Just FYI, if you try to use a 3.0 admin app with 2.2 clients, or a 2.2 admin with 3.0 clients, all that works is the VNC functions which means that other than the ability to upgrade the clients to 3.0 (where applicable), you only get Observe and Control.

  • ARD Admin 3.2 on 10.5 no longer connects to 10.4

I used to be able to connect to my grandmother's computer over the internet using ARD Admin. But ever since upgrading to Leopard and ARD Admin 3.2, I have been unable to connect to her machine. The last time I was at her place I updated Tiger to the latest version, I updated her ARD client to the most recent version for Tiger (I believe it's 2.x but I'm not sure). I've done everything I can think of to make this work and it won't work.
She has an old PowerMac G4 and it can not be updated to Leopard.
Like I said, it used to work just fine. The only changes were on my machine. Any help would be greatly appreciated as I'm her only form of help and giving her tech support over the phone is difficult and frustrating for her.

    Hi
Yes I can confirm its working for me. Leopard Client or Tiger Client connecting and controlling Tiger Server fine. I can also connect and control 10.5 Server using ARD with 10.4 Client. I've seen a similar problem to yours at one site when using 10.5 or 10.4 Client to connect to 10.5 Server. This has never worked although everything is setup the same as per other sites. Like you I can ping, see the server in the list and even connect. The problem shows itself in two ways. I connect but get a black screen and nothng else. Other times I get what you get.
I don't think its a router problem because the same router is used at other sites without the problem. This one site's ISP is one that I've not come across before (ie: not one of the 'mainstream' ones). I've not had chance to investigate but perhaps it may be a problem with them? I am clutching at straws with this theory though.
When you upgraded to Leopard did it coincide with an ISP change?

    HELP!!!!!!!

My Apple Higher Ed Tech rep got back to me with the answer and he did it quite quickly.  If any others on this list have a problem, I will highly reccomend using your tech rep if you have a large enough user base to have a tech rep.  My guy has saved me from a number of headaches in the past few months.
The answer he provided is :
"Please see the following Apple KBase article for the procedure:
I took a look and it gives the procedure needed to accomplish the install.
    Symptoms
The Apple Remote Desktop 3.3 installer may report that it requires Mac OS X v10.6 when used with OS X Lion.
    Products Affected
Apple Remote Desktop 3.X, OS X Lion
    Resolution
Follow these steps to install Apple Remote Desktop and update it to a Lion-compatible version.
Copy the Apple Remote Desktop Installer from the Installation disc to the desktop.
Hold the Control key and click on the Installer icon.
In the contextual menu that appears, choose Show Package Contents.
In the package contents, navigate to Contents/Installers.
Control-click on RemoteDesktopAdmin.pkg and choose Show Package Contents.
In the package contents, double-click the Archive.pax.gz file to expand it.
In the expanded archive, navigate to Archive/Applications/ and drag Remote Desktop to your Applications folder.
Immediately run Software Update to update Remote Desktop to the latest version.

  • ARD admin 2.2 and Leopard

I did the upgrade to 10.5 on my MacBook and now ARD admin 2.2 is not able to open. When it tries to open, it does an attempted update and tells me more current software is already installed and then only lets me exit out...
Anyone know a work around that won't cost me $499 (price for new ARD Admin 3.2)

I just got ARD 3.2 via fedex today because I had the same problem as you and got the same answer you did from Templeton.
Just finished installing ARD 3.2.1, upgrading clients to 3.2.1 and everything is working perfectly. Back in business.
Unfortunately, the cost of upgrading to Leopard just doubled!

  • ARD Admin 3.3.2 and TimeMachine

Had some trouble connecting to my customers LAN over VPN (L2TP) and ARD Admin 3.3.2(455.19). Could not see any clients, the ones I already had in my list from earlier visits was all marked Offline.
Discovered that if I turned off my local TimeMachine backup, everything worked as it should.
I would like to run TimeMachine locally even if I'm connected to another network.
    Any workarounds/solutions for this problem?

I'm having the same problem. None of the clients on the other side of the VPN are showing up except for the xserve hosting the VPN. It worked fine a few weeks ago...
Turning off local Time-machine backups didn't help me...

  • ARD admin Installation

    Hi,
I have a stupid question. Does ARD admin need to be installed in a server, Xserver or OS X Server? Can it be installed on any OS X machine, like imac, or mini?
    Thanks.

The reason I asked the question is because the 2.0 has quitted unexpectedly on my mini. I thought I shouldn't install it on workstation. So, I went to apple support site, and they suggest to upgrade to version 2.2.
I have no problem now. Thanks.

  • ARD Admin and Intel Core Duo MacBook

I just received my new Macbook and used the Migration to transfer everything from my old 14" iBook. When finished, everything so far appears to be working fine except my ARD Admin. When first launching the app, I had to reenter the serial number. Now I get a message each time I launch the app stating that "The Remote Desktop Administrator software is out-of-date." I am instructed to go to software update and check for new software. That process results in word that my software IS up to date. I have tried doing a reinstall of the ARD software, with no help. What all do I need to remove in order to remove all the old software to do a new install? My boss is using the same software version on his MacBook Pro without problems. We are running ARD Version 2.2.
Also, I have some saved tasks on my laptop ARD that I would like to set up on my desktop G4. Is there an easy way to complete this process?
    Thanks

I know that ARD likes the client to be as new as the Administrator software. I wonder if it doesn't like that your administrator is 2.2 and your client is more than likely 3.0 or higher being a new machine?
Is the client enabled on your laptop? If it is, try turning it off, then restart and start the admin software.

  • Mountain Lion, ARD Admin, and Screen Share Issue

We recently upgraded one of our Labs to OSX 10.8.2.  The guy who teachs in that Lab then brought to my attention that he can no longer share his screen with computers in the Lab which are not logged in.  If the machine is sitting at the Login screen he cannot share to them until after the students login. Control works fine through ARD, but not sharing.  All clients have ARD version 3.6.2 installed.  ARD Admin is version 3.6.1 and I can replicate in other buildings/locations.
Attempts to share with a 10.8.2 machine (one or many) which don't have anyone logged in will by all indications in ARD look like the sharing is happening on the Administrator machine, but you can visually see the screen is still sitting at the login prompt.  The display on the machine to be controlled flashes for a second when the Admin clicks Share and it flashes again when the Admin unshares their screen.  The same test run against a 10.6.8 client(still have a group in th next lab over) doesn't have the same problem.
My initial thought was this may be some sort of feature, but I don't see any where to turn it off. I've searched around, but I don't think I'm searching with the right terms for this issue. Any thoughts?

I've never been able to share my screen to computers that no one was logged in on; and i've been using ARD sense Mac OS X 10.4. I'm not saying it hasn't been possible; I've just never been able to get a computer to do that.
My work around is use send unix command as user root. I have a unix script that basicaly triggures and applescript to type a user / pass to login of a generic account. it takes about a minute to run. and if some one is logged in, it dosen't do any thing to that computer.
Heck it can even be set to be the default send unix command. so all the the user has to do is select all computers, click send unix, and click send.
    Some thing like this:
    if [[ "$(who | grep console)" == "" ]]; then osascript -e '
    tell application "System Events"
    keystroke return
    keystroke "a" using command down
    keystroke "PASSWORD"
    keystroke tab
    keystorke "a" using command down
    keystroke "USERNAME"
    keystroke return
    keystroke return
    keystroke return
    end tell';

  • ARD 3 problems

    Hi all,
I have a intel mac mini 10.6 installed under my plasma.. which i would like to control from my g5 imac 10.5.. thats all i want to do is control it.. but it seems its the only thing i cant do. i get the message
You are not authorized to control this computer.
i take it the mac mini is the client, the imac is the admin computer.. i've set up the mac mini with a new user with admin status. the imac finds it okay. i just cant control it
Anyone got any ideas to the problem?
    Regards
    Paul

Screen sharing should not be enabled if you're using ARD. You would use Remote Management.
Let's start with some basics: what version of Apple Remote Desktop are you using? You should have 3.3 to work with a Snow Leopard client.
If you are using 3.3, have you confirmed that you're attempting to connect to your client system using the user name and password for which you've granted ARD privileges on the client? If you are certain you are, try removing the mini from the computer list in the ARD admin and re-add it, making sure you use the name and password of the admin account you set up.
    Hope this helps.

  • 10.6.8, ARD admin 3.5 and ARD 3.5.1 REPORTING BROKEN

    Dear all,
Have just upgraded to ARD admin 3.5 on our admin machines (10.6.8) and ARD 3.5.1 on our client machines (10.6.8).
We are able to control and observe all client computers, send Unix commands but none of the reporting (software versions, file search) methods are working - the report for the client computer never gets past 'Transferring report'.
This was all working just fine using ARD admin 3.4 and 3.4 client.
Have tried deleting plist files (server and client), rebuilding prefs, re-adding client computers but nothing has resolved the issue we are having (same on a number of admin machines).
It looks like Apple haven't done enough testing with this version of Apple Remote Desktop.
    Jason

    Hi Dave,
While I appreciate your response, it is thoroughly unhelpful to the people like myself who are having this problem. It almost sounds like you're a salesman for other products. I know that's not the case (considering how many "points" you have). However, I'm under the impression that ARD does get updates, and even if a single developer is working on the product, that doesn't change the fact that apple advertises the ability to Generate Reports.
If Apple advertises the ability, then I don't suggest anyone give up on the issue by throwing up your hands, as you suggest.
Let me first say that I've been using ARD to generate reports for ~40 computers without problems for quite a long time. It has become an integral part of my workflow.
Anyway, enough of me taking out my frustration on you, here is what I've tried (to no avail... yet. I'm going to solve this if it kills me or I have to reformat my computer) :
    1. Repairing permissions on the clients and the server using diskutilty. This would have been a solution since I could have rolled it out via the command line. But no dice.
    2. Uninstalling & reinstalling ARD admin (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2577). I'm unable to fully install , however, since my user list is automatically repopulated.
    3. Restarting the service on clients using kickstart (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2370). This changes nothing.
I've checked the console, and I did (before removing ARD via KBHT2577) get the error "Encryption key not found for client." I no longer get that error. I've got clients on 10.6, 10.5, and 10.4. So I've tried generating reports for each to see if it affects only certain versions. When connecting to 10.5 and below, I get the error "legacy packet not allowed 111 from 127.0.0.1."
The weird thing is that prior to uninstalling the ARD Admin program, clients were hanging on "transferring report" and I was seeing "Encryption key not found for client." in the console.
Now, after reinstalling, clients are hanging on "generating report." There is no error in the console.
Just giving my input of what I've tried, and what I'm seeing. Sorry if I came off as rude to you, Dave.

  • Just one ARD Admin Refused

    Here's a strange one ...
I have ARD Admin on 3 Macs, on the same network.
Two of them can connect to a client, One cannot.
As all the passwords and setup IS correct, why would One ARD Admin NOT connect to just on ARD client with: 'Authenticaton Failed....' ?
The target Mac has a FULL Blue light on it in all ARD Admin's.
I've checked/repaired the KeyChain on the ARD Admin Mac with the issue.
All three ARD Admins can connect to all other ARD clients.
Just one ARD Admin cannot connect to just on specific ARD client, it can connect to all other ARD clients fine.
It's something local to the one ARD Admin Mac?
    But what?
I've done the whole dlete computer thing on the ARD Admin to no avail, and deleted the Scanner entry too...
    Thank you,
ARD Admin Macs are on OSX 10.9
    ARD Admin is v3.7.1
ARD Clients are various from v3.4 upwards
This one ARD client is v3.4 (but there are others that are OK with ARD client v3.4, and like I say other ARD Adin can conenct to it.)

    Hi James
I've seen this at a site I support that had recently upgraded to Mavericks. I subsequently discovered that at the time they did the upgrade they were having some slight/strange network/firewall issues which they'd ignored. These in fact had contributed to the problems they were having after the upgrade.
My 'fix' was to clear out the caches and then disabling remote management on the client workstations that were having the problem. These were then rebooted and remote management was then re-enabled. I'd deleted the misbehaving clients from the All Computers list in ARD Admin first and re-added them after the reboot and re-enable.
This may not be applicable for your location but I endeavour to make things easy for myself by always enabling the remote login (SSH) option in the deployment build. That way I can quickly and easily connect to affected clients and either run a script or series of commands that 'fixes' pretty much most problems I come across.
    HTH?

  • I can't upgrade clients from ARD admin

    Hi all,
I am trying to upgrade all my client machines to ARD 3.3.2. But when I try doing this from ARD admin, it comes back failing with no error message returned. What could be causing this?
    Thanks in advance...

Have you tried restarting the workstations and then trying the update? That's often cured the problem for me when an update fails.
    Hope this helps.

  • ARD Admin with Standard Account

I log in with a Standard Account on my MacBook Pro under Mac OS X 10.6.8, open Apple Remote Desktop Administrator. I have access to most of the commands in the menu bar except those under Reports (All) and Manage (Copy Items, Install Packages, Send UNIX Command, Empty Trash, Set Startup Disk, Rename Computers, Upgrade Client Software, Change Client Settings).
Is there a way to allow the Standard Account to access all the features of ARD Admin?
I ask because we have a policy in place where everyone must be using a Standard Account and only the Admin account to authenticate installations, etc. I provide support and use ARD to connect with remote computers.
    Thanks!

I seem to remember there being a setting in ARD to allow what non administer accounts can do with ARD. But to access these settings you need to first login as an administrator, and set those settings in ARD Prefereces.
