Multiple ASM Instances on single node
Hi All,
After going through some threads it seems to me that multiple ASM instances on a node is not supported and recommended by ORACLE but i coudn't find any ORACLE document or support matrix mentioning this. Can any one give me a pointer to this. Please correct me if i am wrong and Multiple ASM instances are fully supported by ORACLE.
Thanks,Multiple ASM instances on a single node are supported but not recommended due to several issues you could encounter during that kind of configuration.
Possible interraction between those instances for identification of each disk area usage, each disk area permissions , database instance to asm instance mapping and so on, could result in unwanted behaviour, as ASM is in some way just oracle's representation of LVM.
Intention is that any kind of distinction/separation of oracle related data under the ASM should be done through the disk groups.
So it seems it would be better to apply this kind of logic rather than doing suspiciously magical and rare configurations that could bring you similiary strange and unexpected problems. -
Can there be multiple ASM instances on single node?
Hi,
Can there be multiple ASM instances on single node?
This one says No : http://www.freelists.org/archives/oracle-l/02-2008/msg00317.html
And This one says Yes : http://www.databasejournal.com/features/oracle/article.php/3571371
Thanks in advance.
Thanks,
Harsha
Edited by: user498756 on Sep 11, 2008 2:23 AM...that document doesnt say you cannot have multiple ASM instances on a node. It says "...ASM, +you only need one ASM+ instance for that computer, to manage the two database instances that use ASM."
The fact that you only need one - and I cannot think of a good reason to have more than one - does not preclude the fact that you do seem to be able to have multiple ASM instances on a single node, each looking after its own set of disks and diskgroups.
Again - I cannot think of a good reason to do so though!

Trying to create ASM instance, thinks one already exists?
I've got a problem with creating the ASM instance. Basically, I've reinstalled (v11.1.0.6) clusterware, and two database software installs (one for asm, one for db) due to a san swap. Now, I believe that there is still a hangover to the original installation. When creating the ASM instance through DBCA on Windows, I get the following:
DBCA could not startup the ASM instance configured on this node. To proceed with ASM diskgroup management you need the ASM instance to be up and running. Do you want to recreate the ASM instance on this node?
Yes
Enter password
DBCA will now create and start the ASM instance. After the ASM instance is started, you can create disk groups to be used as storage for your database.
OK
ASM Instance Creation...
Encountered file error when copying listeners from home=D:\oracle\product\11.1.0\asm_2
OK
The operation will be stopped. Re-run DBCA after successfully running NetCA.
I have a listener running (listener_rac), I have a similar problem with netca as it says I already have a listener called listener, which I do not, however, I have created listener_rac instead.
I feel trhat the problem is that ASM1 (for node 1) or ASM2 (for node 2) already exists. However, I can not find either of these. I can create an ASM instance in single node mode, however, this creates an instance +ASM, which does not conflict.
How do I find the non-existent instance, and remove it? (not in registry or services)
Alternatively, any other ideas as to what is happening?
Thank you for your time.I have a listener running (listener_rac), I have a similar problem with netca as it says I already have a listener called listener, which I do not, however, I have created listener_rac insteadDBCA created your listener... you can check on listener status
srvctl status nodeapps -n node01
Listener is running on node: node01
srvctl status nodeapps -n node02
Listener is running on node: node02
if not start, start it by
Usage: srvctl start listener -n <node_name> [-l <lsnr_name_list>]
srvctl start listener -n node01
by the way, you cam use "netca" delete/recreate (listener_rac)
After that, point to ASM:
I feel trhat the problem is that ASM1 (for node 1) or ASM2 (for node 2) already exists. However, I can not find either of these. What did you see?
crs_stat
srvctl status asm -n node01
srvctl status asm -n node02
if you see asm on node01/node2... you can start them if thet offline
srvctl start asm -n node01
srvctl start asm -n node02
and then.. use "DBCA" to help create ASM diskgroups.
I can create an ASM instance in single node mode, however, this creates an instance +ASM, which does not conflict.that can conflict.. don't start it (+ASM)
How do I find the non-existent instance, and remove it? (not in registry or services)
Alternatively, any other ideas as to what is happening?use "crs_stat" command
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/rac.111/b28255/crsref.htm#CWADD6025
and use "srvctl"
http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/rac.111/b28254/srvctladmin.htm#RACAD028 -
Two ASM instance on one machine
Can we have two ASM instance on one machine ? My Manager is saying he is positive and I don't have anything to show him that we can not do that. Is there any link, document anything available for this ?
ThanksKeyur,
This is an interesting question. I have seen references where in it clearly says that only one ASM instance is required per node irrespective of number of databases on a node. But, I haven't seen a clear indication, wherein it is mentioned that you can't start more than 1 ASM instances on a node. Therefore, I thought, I would give it a shot, by attempting to bring up a second ASM instance and here is what I get:
SQL> startup nomount pfile=init+ASM5.ora
ORA-00304: requested INSTANCE_NUMBER is busy
SQL>
If I shutdown my ASM1 (first ASM instance) then it allows me to bring up the ASM5 instance. This leads me to believe that you can't startup up more than one ASM instance on a single node.
Here is a note, which mentions that you need only one ASM instance per node. https://metalink.oracle.com/metalink/plsql/docs/ASM%20best%20practices.pdf
Thanks

Sun Java System Application Server8 can not startup (help me )
I work in an japanese compay in China. recently, my JSC can not work
who can help me
the error infomation is :
The Sun Java System Application Server could not start:
Possible reasons:
1.port conflict
2.Incorrect server configuartion
3.corrputed deployed application
my java Studio Creator version: 2004Q2 Update9
I have used this tool for three weeks , in the frist week. everything is ok.
no probroblem happened. in the second week ,sometimes my JSC can not startup, so I restarted my JSC. and it can work again. later, the same problem happened again. when I restarted my JSC , it sill does not work, so I have to restart my computer and it startup successfully,
two days later, the same problem happened again. I restarted my computer , it still did not work. so I have to change my port number in the domain.xml. sometimes it woks well, but sometimes I can't not startup.
in the third week, no matter what I do, the problem can not be solved.
some of my colleagues don't have such problem. but some of them have the same problem. when I run my project on the computer that don't have such problem , it can startup. I don't know why, just a little weird.
till now , no one in our company can tell why this problem happened.
and I believe that anybody who use JSC will encountered this error sooner or later.
who can tell me why will this problem happen? and where can I find some related imformation about this problem. thanks!!!!!!

Restarting the computer should have stopped the appserver.
To kill the appserver manually you can go to the command prompt
<install-dir>\Sun\Creator2\SunAppServer8\bin\asadmin.bat\stop-appserv

Can not startup the oracle db after reboot
Hi.
I have an Oracle 10g DB running on Linux9 server. It works well before I reboot the server this morning. I can not startup the db.
$ sqlplus /NOLOG
SQL> CONNECT sys/password AS SYSDBA
Connected to an idle instance.
SQL> STARTUP
ORA-17503: ksfdopn:2 Failed to open file +DATADG/orcl10g/spfileorcl10g.ora
ORA-15055: unable to connect to ASM instance
How can I do to restart the db??
Any hints are highly appreciated.
QianYes, it seems all right. But the real problem is: after I start listener,
Oracle Enterprise manager 10g Fatabase Control and iSQL*Plus, I can not connect to the http://localhost:5500/em. The Alert says: The connection was refused when attempting to contact localhost:5500.
I can connect to the iSQL*Plus. I mean, the http://localhost:5560/isqplus/, but can not login. The Error says: ERROR-ORA-12514: TNS: listener does not currently know of service requested in connect descriptor.
When I see the status of listener,
The Alert of listener says:

The command completed successfully.
I don't know which part is wrong. This morning all things work well....
And How can I check the db is startup? If the db is started, can I use sqlplus even without listener?

forgot password on my apple I phone and just got a new one and can not remeber my verizon email password, how do I retrieve it
hibob99,
Thank you so much for reaching out to us. I know there are to many passwords out there now days to keep track of them all. Are you looking to reset the Verizon.net e-mail address? If so, you would need to reach out to Verizon Communication by calling 800-837-4966. Please keep us posted.

I have one folder on an XSAN that one machine can not make changes to. Whenever I try to duplicate or copy a file in this folder I get 'The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50).'
The permissions are fine, and I have trashed the finder plist and reset the NVRAM.
Anyone have a answer?
ThanksTips I received so far (thanks to A-Mac via Twitter http://www.a-mac.nl and Remco Kalf http://www.remcokalf.nl/)
- make sure you have at least 10% of your harddisk in free space (I had only 5%).
- do a PRAM-reset (http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1379)
- perform a hardware test (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509)
- make a complete backup (with for example Carbone Clone Copier, see http://www.bombich.com/)
- after complete backup: use diskwarrior (boot from Diskwarrior DVD, first perform diagnostics, then perform "Rebuild" which rebuilds your file directory).
So far I only cleared up some space on my HD, and already the problem occurs less.
Still, I will go through the other tips too.

f i have a mid 2009 mac book pro and an apple tv that is the latest one. i can not mirror the mac book on my tv. is it the fact that my computer is a little older than 2011 models which will work. any info is greatly appreciated
chuck schickYes. You need 2011 or later in order to mirror as it requires the newer processor. The alternative is airparrot, which does it via software.

One user can not retrieve email from phone
I have one user can not hear the email from the IP phone, Text-To-Speech configured for this subscriber, listen voice message on the IP phone no problem, from outlook side, no problem, checked everything looks fine. any idea what happened for this?
Unity 405 UM with Exchange 2003, Callmanager 413.
ThanksActually this is system wide problem, other users not reported.
Solution: The unity primary server was out of synch with the exchange message store, restarted the Message Store svc, problem solved.
Thanks Jeff and other posts, do give me lots of clues. -
One contact can not recive my texts.
One contact can not recive my texts, he has a Samsung Galaxy s3 with AT&T and I have an Iphone 5s with Verizon and IOS8. Other people with the iphone 5s, verizon and IOS8 can text him and he will reccive theirs. Why can he not recive mine? We both can still call each other and he can text me and I reccive them. The texts I send him never come back and say not delivered so I am assuming they are getting lost somewhere. Is this an AT&T problem or Verizon, also how can I fix this? I need a quick fix!!
Kangel,
You said that your iPhone is saying "Not Delivered" which means that for some reason your iPhone is trying to text him via the iMessage system as that is the only time that you'll get a "Not Delivered" "Delivered" or "Read" message sent back underneath the text that you recently sent. I also noticed that you said that your friend is using GS3. So if I'm thinking correctly, your iPhone think that your friend is using an iPhone as well. If you go into your settings and turn off iMessage then every text will be sent as SMS over the cell tower...then he should start receiving them. This is only a temporary fix unless you don't care to use the iMessage service anyway. Hope this sheds some light... -
ASM instances on 2 node Oracle RAC 10g r2 on Red Hat 4 u1
Hi all
I'm experiencing a problem in configuring diskgroups under +ASM instances on a two node Oracle RAC.
I followed the official guide and also official documents from metalink site, but i'm stuck with the visibility of asm disks.
I created fake disks on nfs with Netapp certified storage binding them to block device with the usual trick "losetup /dev/loopX /nfs/disk1 " ,
run "oracleasm createdisk DISKX /dev/loopX" on one node and
"oracleasm scandisks" on the other one.
With "oracleasm listdisks" i can see the disks at OS level in both nodes , but , when i try to create and mount diskgroup in the ASM instances , on the instance on which i create the diskgroup all is well, but the other one doesn't see the disks at all, and diskgroup mount fails with :
ERROR: no PST quorum in group 1: required 2, found 0
Tue Sep 20 16:22:32 2005
NOTE: cache dismounting group 1/0x6F88595E (DG1)
NOTE: dbwr not being msg'd to dismount
ERROR: diskgroup DG1 was not mounted
any help would be appreciated
thanks a lot.
