ASR901 vs ME3600X

Hi,
I've never worked with an ASR901 before and now I'm designing an MPLS network but with several budget constraints.
Basically what I need is 1 customer edge port and 2 MPLS ports to connect to an MPLS cloud. I would normally use an ME3600X for this, but, since the ASR901 is running the same software and also has enough ports available for lets say half the price, I was wondering if this would suffice too.
Can anyone tell me the noticable differences between those platforms?
Like:
MVPN Support.
Service Instances.
etc?..
The network is not TDM related or whatever. So basically I was just looking at the Ethernet version of this router (A901-6CZ-F-A).
Thanks!
Regards,
Armand

Hi Emiliano,
In both cases encapsulation for xconnect is mpls only. the other encapsulation tht you have defined under service-instance is to map an incoming tag to a service instance. If you are receiving a frame without any tag it will be mapped to service instance 1.
Say suppose instead of "encapsulation default" we confiure "encapsulation dot1q 10" then all frames coming with tag 10 will be mapped to this service instance.
Now major difference between both implementaiton is, one is port-based EoMPLS second is scalable EoMPLS. In port-based EoMPLS you can use this port only for one L2 circuit service, while in EVC framework you can create multiple service instance and use them for different services.
Probably the biggest advantage of the EVC framework is the ability to support multiple services per physical port. This means that under a single physical port you can have any of the following mixed together :
- 802.1q trunk
- 802.1q tunnel
- Local connect
- Scalable EoMPLS (EoMPLS xconnect)
- Multipoint Bridging (L2 bridging)
- Multipoint Bridging (VPLS, SVI-based EoMPLS)
- L3 termination

  • QinQ in g.8032 ring with ASR901 and ME3600X

    Hi Everyone,
I'd like to share with you an issue that I'm facing on ASR901 platform. I'm just trying to set up a simple QinQ configuration over a g.8032 Ethernet Ring but I have troubles with MSTP and I don't understand why...
Here is the configuration of my UNI port :
    interface GigabitEthernet0/4
    negotiation auto
    service instance 1 ethernet
    encapsulation dot1q 4000
rewrite ingress tag pop 1 symmetric
    bridge-domain 4000
service instance 2 ethernet !!! This EFP is receiving client VLANs from 500 to 599
    encapsulation dot1q 500-599
    bridge-domain 2000
    end
Here is the NNI configuration (to other ASR901 in the ring) :
    interface TenGigabitEthernet0/0
    no ip address
    service instance 1 ethernet evc1
    encapsulation dot1q 1000
    bridge-domain 1000

    service instance 3 ethernet
    encapsulation dot1q 3001 second-dot1q 500-599
rewrite ingress tag pop 1 symmetric
    bridge-domain 2000
    end
When I'm configuring the last EFP on the NNI port, I have this logging entry :
    ASR901-1(config)#int te0/0
ASR901-1(config-if)# no service instance 3 ethernet
    ASR901-1(config-if)# service instance 3 ethernet

ASR901-1(config-if-srv)# rewrite ingress tag pop 1 symmetric
    ASR901-1(config-if-srv)# bridge-domain 2000
Error!!! EFP 3 maps to differenet MST instance than other EFPs in bridge-domain 2000
I don't have any other configuration concerning bridge domain 2000 and I don't have configured any STP commands. I've even deactivated all spanning-tree instances.
Why should I have to deal with MSTP in this situation??
If anyone has any idea, I would appreciate...

  • CISCO ASR901 BRIDGE BETWEEN 2 INTERFACES

    Hi All!
I'm looking for some way to make a transparent bridge between two interfaces of a Cisco router ASR901 , is there any possibility? I ask this because I have a scenario where I would use the ASR901 to the following question :
    POP01 (                       ) ASR901  g0 / 6 -------- > ISG_7206
    POP02 ( MPLS CLOUD )               g0 / 7 -------- > ISG_7206
    POP03 (                       )
The ASR901 will focus EoMPLS with other points in the network and pass on to ISG routers , ie , VLANs would have to be two ports with XConnect to a remote router , the configuration would be something like this :
    interface GigabitEthernet0/6

    member GigabitEthernet0 / 6 service -instance 4095

But without an interface that was redundant of other , what I need is the 2 interfaces in " bridge " making a XConnect to a remote router , and these 2 interfaces connected ISGs in 2 to make a balance .

    Hello,
I do not believe that the ASR901 will do this without help from an upstream device. If I understand correctly, you want to build a bridge-domain with 3 EFPs: 2 physical ports, and one pseudowire. As of the last IOS revision that I have configured on this platform, the 901 doesn't support the pseudowire on a bridge-domain, only a service instance.
It seems to me that you would need an upstream box involved to support this.
    Either:
Build 2 pseudowires to an upstream box that supports this configuration (like an ME 3600x, ME3800x, or 9k).
    or
Associate both service instances to a common bridge domain that is extended to an upstream box that is initiating the pseudowire. More platforms would support this, since it does not require supporting the pseudowire on a bridge domain.
...Unless you are looking to build an LACP channel-group on the interfaces connected to the ISGs to load-balance. The 901 supports LACP, and it also supports building an EFP (service instance) on the channel-group interface. This technically makes the 2 physical interfaces one EFP. The part of this that I have not tried is building a pseudowire on an EFP on a channel-group.
    Hope this helps.

  • Do I need "advanced license" to run MPLS on ME3600X?

Those who have dealt with ME3600X switch, can you tell me if I need to purchase the “Advanced Metro IP Access License” in order to run L2/L3 MPLS VPN? The license is $3995 in addition. It is a big cost for us. More specifically, I want to know if the following commands are supported with the license comes with the switch. No advanced MPLS features like traffic engineering is required at this point.

    Hi dear,
according to the information available on CCO over here
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/prod/collateral/switches/ps6568/ps10956/data_sheet_c78-601946.html
you indeed need to get that license in your gear to let it run MPLS.
The commands highlighted in red should work after that.

  • L2 tunnel between me3600x and 3925

    Hello,
We are currently trying to configure a l2tunnel between a ME3600X (running 15.3(3)S3 with the AdvancedMetroIPAccess licence) and a 3925 (running 15.0(1)M2 with the datak9 licence).
We are part of a CsC architecture, playing the role of the customer carrier, using BGP for label distribution between the Backbone carrier and the Customer carrier.
Our architecture is quite flat as the CE and PE roles are on the same routers.
we have the view on the following architecture and can configure the R1, RCV1, RCV2 and R2 routers :
    R1 --- RCV1---(Backbone Carrier)---RCV2--- R2
We have 3 sites  A,B and C but only 2 dark fibers to connect them.
We are using the CsC to build a L2 tunnel and close the triangle :
        A-ME=tun=3925-B
         df                    df
                   C
For year were using a 2911 and a 3900 to build the tunnel and it was good. The tunnel was build with an xconnect l2tpv3.
we replaced our 2911 for a ME3600X few weeks ago following the advice of our backbone CsC contact, and we are now facing the following problem :
the configuration we used is not working any more : we can build the tunnel but the spanning tree BDPU are not passing through (We use rstp for spanning-tree protocol).

As we have no experience with the ME3600X and their EVC and service instance concepts we have a hard time figuring out what solution to use :
    - According to this post l2tpv3 is not supported on the ME3600X : https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11919131/configuring-pseudowire-between-3800-router-and-me3600x
    - According to this one it seems possible to interoperate a tunnel between a 2911 and a Me3600 : https://supportforums.cisco.com/discussion/11848451/eompls-and-layer-2-tunneling
Our need is slightly different though, as we are trying to pass a dot1Q trunk in the tunnel.
We tried to switch to encapsulation mpls, with no luck so far...
Any help or feedback would be greatly appreciated.

-> The "sequencing both" is mandatory to get the tunnel UP.
-> I configured l3 interfaces on the devices facing the ends of the tunnel and I can't ping them. Looking a little bit more carefully, I noticed that the arp table does not fill on the 3900, but it does on the 3600. I guessed that's a limitation on the 3600, but still not sure.
I then tried to switch to mpls encapsulation with the following configuration :

     xconnect 10.193.32.50 5 pw-class backup-sro-ypa
This time, impossible to get the tunnel UP :

Actually, as I am in a CsC architecture using BGB for label distribution with the CsC core, there is not ldp neighbor, and it seems to be the reason why I can't get the tunnel UP.
I am now trying to avoid ldp for the signaling of the tunnel using AToM Static Pseudowire Provisioning but I am to much of a newbie for that. I get a  "Incomplete AToM manual config" when configuring the xconnect on the me3600...
Here is my config on the ME3600x so far :

    Funny, I tried to configure
    RYPRC01(config-if-xconn)#mpls label 0 1048500
on the xconnect sub config section of the interface, but it won't appear in the config...
I am really stuck, and any help would really be appreciated.

  • Maximum number of VPLS instances on ME3600X box

    Hi,
Does anyone know what is the current maximum number of VPLS instances on ME3600X (Advanced Metro IP Access license)? I've found on one of the old presentations that this was only 26. And why is this limitation present?
    Best regards,
    Krzysztof

    Hi Ricardo,
as for every platform, in the official limitations and restrictions there is a margin of prudence in what the platform can support. Let's say you can configure 40 VPLS instances (never tried) on your 3600X , and you do it with no apparent issue, this implementation would simply fall off the tests which Cisco did on that particular platform. Hence, any bad subsequent behaviour would not be "Cisco fault" and i actually see no reason for doing that.

When i am downloading a file and capturing the traffic with wireshark there is significant difference on Cisco 7609-S graph with that one on Cisco ME3600X. Both have the same internet connection.
Is there any way to fine tune Cisco ME3600X to have the same behavior like Cisco 7609-S?
    Regards
    Antonis.

I have not that graph so I am just guessing that you are noticing the difference between policing and shaping. It seems to me you are applying these techniques on each platform on a different way. Try to shape/police in the same order or only to shape.
    Hope to help

  • In ASR901 can you tag MSTP BPDU's

I have an ASR901 ring, dual homed to 2 ME3800's with a management VPLS connection between the 3800's.  Running MPLS on all interfaces of the ring.  Would like to use a VRF for in-band management of the 901's.  These devices will be located at customer premises.  I am using SVI's for MPLS interfaces and SVI's for in-band Management interfaces on the ring.  Untagged encaps for MPLS and Tagged (vlan 2) for Management.   In the 3800's, I have a VPLS to bring the traffic back to the Management router.  So basically, in-band management uses a Layer 2 vlan switching on the ring, with vlan interfaces attached to a VRF.  Customer traffic uses MPLS cross-connects.
Problem is the need for MSTP so management can be dual homed to both 3800's and Layer 2 Protocol forwarding over the VPLS in order for STP to work properly.
This doesn't work because the management traffic is tagged VLAN 2 and the BPDU's are untagged, therefore they are getting dropped at the service instance ingress to the 3800's (encap dot1q 2).  Is there a way to tag MTSP BPDU's to make this work?  MSTP is the only STP option on the ASR901.
Or is there a way to add a management interface to an EFP cross-connect?  Or some other way to dual home the in-band management while using a VRF for management?  Note ASR901 doesn't support VPLS.

Thanks for the link but unfortunately it didn't help.  Although I did follow the instructions on the link but without success, I noticed that the link spoke of the iPod nano (5th generation).   I'm wondering if the tagging feature isn't available for the iphone 4s.  I bet it is but something just isnt right.

  • Encapsulation dot1q any second any on me3600x

    Hi,
we recieve a number of downstream hand-offs that are delivered as SVID/CVID ccts.  There are mixture of data, and VOIP subscribers, the only way to tell the different type of subscribers is that the all voip services are marked as cos 4.  All data subscribers are marked cos 0.  I have no control over the SVID/CVID mix, and there is no "pattern" so I cannot enter ranges.
I am wanting to deliver each subscriber type to a different bridge-domain then use xconnect to forward these so ultimately i have one bridge-domain with VOIP services, and one with data services.
on the me3600x I tried the following:
    interface GigabitEthernet0/4
    switchport trunk allowed vlan none
    switchport mode trunk
    service instance 950 ethernet
      encapsulation dot1q 1-4096 secondary 1-4096
      bridge-domain 950
    service instance 951 ethernet
      encapsulation dot1q 1-4096 secondary 1-4096 cos 4
      bridge-domain 951
This seemed to work with cos 4 traffic being sent to a differnet bridge-domain than other traffic, however when i try to apply this config to more than 4 interfaces (8 bridge-domain members) i get a "command rejected" error when i enter the "encapsulation dot1q" command.  "Encapsulation deafult" is still accepted though.
can any one explain to me why there is this limitation, or if there is any way around it, or any other way to do what i am trying to do?
    ta.

    Hi Mike,
I replicated your setup in the lab and it appears the problematic line causing this interesting limitation is the “encapsulation dot1q any second-dot1q any” under the “service instance 950”
Since you are not really interested in the second tag value you can leave it out of the equation using just “encapsulation dot1q any” –to match any frame (not matching any more specific service instance rules) with at least one 802.1q tag or you can use “encapsulation default” –to match any frame (not matching any more specific service instance rules)
    interface GigabitEthernet0/1
    switchport trunk allowed vlan none
    switchport mode trunk
    service instance 950 ethernet
    encapsulation dot1q any
    bridge-domain 950
    service instance 951 ethernet
    encapsulation dot1q any second-dot1q any cos 4
    bridge-domain 951
    c36cx#sh bridge-domain 951
    Bridge-domain 951 (6 ports in all)
    State: UP                   Mac learning: Enabled
    Maximum address limit: 10000
       GigabitEthernet0/1 service instance 951
       GigabitEthernet0/2 service instance 951
       GigabitEthernet0/3 service instance 951
       GigabitEthernet0/4 service instance 951
       GigabitEthernet0/5 service instance 951
       GigabitEthernet0/6 service instance 951

  • ASR901 y.1731 Latest Data Table Not Populated

Why would SNMP data for a y.1731 test on an ASR901 not be populated in the ipslaEtherJitterLatestStatsEntry table?
All the data in the table is being populated with zeros, even though valid tests are being performed.  There is data in the ipslaEtherJitterAggStatsEntry but only getting zeros when polling the latest table.
I have verified that following objects exist per the MIB:
    - rttMonCtrlAdminRttType
    - rttMonEchoAdminProtocol
Please let me know if you need anything else.

    Hi,
Q Table is generated if we have time dependent display attributes for base Info Object where as Y Table is generated if we have at least one attribute defined as time-dependent navigational attribute.
Normally both Q and Y table contain same no.of entries, however in your case the reason could be that SID for some records might not have generated(assuming this could be the reason) hence you are seeing this discrepancy in record count.
Also before you proceed with any action in RSRV, you can check the records which are missing from Y table and analyze the reason for it. In RSRV if there is any is inconsistency we can see reason(error message) for inconsistency which helps us to understand the cause for this inconsistency.
By analyzing this way we can know reason for discrepancy.

  • ME3600X switch - config looks valid, but "Ring port(s) are OIR deleted" is reported

    Hi,
I'm trying to set up ERP on my Cisco ME3600X switch.  I've followed the documented process in http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/ios-xml/ios/cether/configuration/xe-3s/ce-xe-3s-book/ce-g8032-ering-pro.html, but when I run "show ethernet ring g8032 configuration", I get the following error:

     Port1: GigabitEthernet0/2 (Monitor: Service Instance 2)

       Level: 5
       Port0: Service Instance 100
       Port1: Service Instance 100
State: configuration unresolved, Ring port(s) are OIR deleted
I've been unable to determine what this problem means as none of the logs give any useful information and there is no further information on the Web/Forum.  Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks,

  • VPLS on ASR901

    Hello All,
Can anyone tell me if VPLS is on the roadmap for the ASR901?
    Thanks!
    David

    Hi David,
As far as I know, it is scheduled for May 2014.
Maybe someone can verify if it is commited or not..

  • ASR901 port mirroring

ASR901 does not support port mirrioring as in other platforms.
Insted we can use following for port mirroring.
    901(config)#service internal
    901(config)#^Z
    901#
    901#test mirror 1 both 11
Here gig 0/0 interface will be mirrored to gig 0/10 interface.
What is the use of service internal command. It is not documented anywhere.....

    Hello Sanjeewa
service internal command is a hidden command that is used to enable certain command line features as may be used by Cisco engineer to check some internal commands of the platform while troubleshooting. This command enable internal platform level commands. Like for example on 7600/6500 platform, you can perform ELAM capture (used to capture a single packet either on DFC or SP ) only after you enable "service internal".
Hope this answers your question. Let me know if you have any further questions.
