Audio via ethernet from MacBook

I’m a newbie--just switching to Mac from Windows.
I can’t claim to be a true audiophile, but I have tendencies in that direction. I’m in the process of storing a thousand CDs in Apple LossLess, and have a pretty good stereo.
My new MacBook will be in the back of my house in my office, connected to a hardwired LAN. The LAN has an ethernet connection right where my stereo is. I have an NAD integrated amp with no optical/digital input. I want to stream audio from the MacBook to the stereo. I’d like to leave the MacBook where it is, and have something like an iPhone or iPad as a controller where my stereo is.
Can I just plug in an Airport Express to the Ethernet where my stereo is? Will it stream audio from my MacBook to the stereo over the Ethernet? Or will it stream it wirelessly? Do I care? (Shouldn’t an Ethernet connection be a lot higher quality than wireless?)
Is there a better way to get audio from the MacBook to the stereo via Ethernet—even if it requires a non-Mac solution?
--Werner

Hello WLohe. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
If your goal is to use iTunes on your MacBook as the audio source of ALAC files, then they could be streamed over Ethernet. iTunes uses AirTunes for audio streaming. AirTunes can be transmitted over wire or wireless. At the NAD end, you would need either an AirPort Express Base Station (AX) or Apple TV, to receive the AirTunes streams. In turn, these devices would offer digital optical or analog outputs to the NAD.
If however, your goal is to stream these files outside of iTunes, then you would need a different solution. One such solution is to run a DLNA media server on the MacBook, and then, stream media to a DLNA client ... like an Xbox 360. In this case an AirPort Express would not be necessary.

what connector to buy to transfer audio and video from macbook to tv? I read that if I buy the normal mini display port to hdmi converter that the audio will not transmit through my tv. I there a certain thing I need to buy to make this happen? I have a Macbook 13 inch Early 2008.

You can sync photos and videos to your iPad via your computer's iTunes.
To sync photos, connect and select your iPad on the left-hand sidebar of your computer's iTunes (you can enable the sidebar via option-command-S on a Mac), and on the right-hand side there should be a series of tabs, one of which should be Photos - if you select that tab you can then select which photo folders to sync to the iPad. There is a bit more info on this page. You will need to sync all the photos that you want on the iPad together in one go as only the most recent photo sync remains on the iPad - synced photos can't be deleted directly on the iPad, instead they are deleted by not including them in the next photo sync.
If the videos are films that you want to go into the Videos app then you first need to add them to your computer's iTunes library via File > Add To Library, and you can then use the Films/Movies tab to select and sync them
Syncing media : iTunes: Syncing media content to iPod
What format are the videos in that you want to download, and have you got an app on your iPad that supports that format ?

• Sharing ethernet from Macbook pro to wifi for my iphone.

Internet sharing has worked completely fine for me for about 3 weeks up until now.  Now, when I try to connect to the network on my iPhone, it connects for about a second, then drops connection. (This connecting and disconnecting happens rapidly if I stay on the Wi-Fi choice tab on my phone.)  The network shows 3 full bars for connectivity, however when I choose it and the flickering between "choose a network" and the actual network being chosen happens, the 3 bars become greyed out.  It jumps from the list of network up to appearing as the chosen network about 5 times than stops (ending up back on the list to choose from).  I'm not sure why this started.  I tried to connect my friend's tablet to the network and the same thing happened so I know it is a problem with my computer and not my phone.  I've restored and reset network settings on both my phone and macbook several times.  I just installed mavericks today in hopes that it might fix something but the same problem occurs.  My macbook is still able to connect to the internet just fine when sharing is turned on which leads me to believe that the ethernet cord I am using and the port on my macbook are perfectly fine.  I haven't seen any problems similar to the one I am having right now so I am trying to explain it the best I can.  Can anyone help me figure out what is going on and what (if anything) can be fixed?  Also, for the sake of providing all helpful information, I am on a college campus in a dorm room so messing with the router or modem or anything like that is not an option.  The reason I share the ethernet from my macbook to wifi for my phone is because the wifi from the college is horrible and I am forced to use up all of my data quickly while I am in my room unless I can get this sharing to start working again.  If anyone has an possible solutions or theories as to what is happening please let me know! Thank you!

Hi Slickwill since you added Mavericks today its possible it is the problem. Read some helpful tips from OSX Daily

• Audio to TV from macbook pro

I am using an HMDI cable along with an adapter to get streaming video to my TV. Once I figured out the mirroring issue it works great except the audio. It doesn't transfer to the TV like the video did. Audio still comes from the laptop. Any ideas?

The advice I gave there will apply to you if your machine was made before April 2010. If it was made after then, please post back with details of your audio settings and a URL for the exact HDMI adapter you purchased.

• Laserjet 2100 TN via ethernet to MacBook Pro 2009 (Snow Leopard)

I've been given an HP Laserjet 2100 TN. It was previously suceessfully used with a MacBook pro via an ethernet cable.
I'm trying to set it up at home but failing to get it to connect with my MacBook. I'm using Snow Leopard.
I've read lots of connection tips in discussion forums but not found a solution that works for me.
I've managed to print a configuration sheet which tells me in printers HP JetSend Address.
I've tried using this to add the printer through System Preferences but the computer is not connecting with it.
Do I need a parallel cable or is the ethernet cable enough?
I think I'm missing something obvious!
Sarah

Sorry to post in the wrong place! And thanks for your input. SCSI is a good call - the parallel cable didn't look quite right and that may explain why. Can I add a few more experiences to help explain where I'm at:
- Snow Leopard seems to think the drivers should be included in the OS, but I don't know how to access them.
- I found and installed a driver but couldn't find how to access it when adding the printer.
- When I'm in ADD PRINTER
        - I guess I need an IP address - is this the one I find on printer info?
        - I saw a forum that recommended LPD as best choice for old priters so I'm using that
         - It defaults 'Print using' to Generic Postscript Printer'. I've tried changing it to Generic PCL Laser Printer as it is a laser prointer, but neither help make it work
         - Once I've setup the printer, when I run a test page the printer fails to connect and goes on hold
I don't think I'm explaining myself very well - mainly because I'm quite out of my depth trying to did this! I can't find anything in the printer handbook which helps. Do you have any advice for a novice trying to add a printer it would be much appreciated.

• STP won't recognize audio via firewire from camera

Dear all,
I am trying to record narration using a microphone attached to my Canon XL1S and import the audio live into Sound Track Pro via firewire. This method works fine for Quicktime. Quicktime recognizes the XL1S and records the narration as I am speaking, but STP does not seem to recognize the firewire input and I get no meter levels or any indication that my audio is registering. Any suggestions? I have tried all the preferences and settings I can find. Do I need another interface for STP? Seems strange that I would if Quicktime recognizes it.
Thanks much.
Barb.

It cannot be done. STP (and other DAWs) doesn't natively support Firewire devices in that manner.
Instead, try the Quicktime or FCP approach, or even record it to tape, then import it. The better way would be to get a dedicated soundcard and mixer for that. Believe me, you'll appreciate that!

• How to send audio via RTP from captured device and media file together?

Hi there,
I have this application which can send audio stream via RTP using AVTransmit.java.
In this application, there is this button which will play a short tune (via java.applet.AudioClip) when i clicked on it.
My question is, how can I transmit this short tune to the other side along with the current audio stream via RTP?
Thank you!

Hi there,
Thank you for the replies. I have tried creating another stream to send the media file. Although it's workable, the other side is unable to handle 2 incoming stream. The receving end does not hear a combined audio. Sometimes i hear the media file's audio, sometimes i hear the other.
Is it possible to merged the media file's audio into the existing rtp stream on the fly? Or piped the media file's audio to the capture datasource?

• Airport utility only sees express via ethernet

Hi. This is my first post, nice to meet you.
Hope someone here can help. I've recently upgraded our home internet service and our service provider supplied a new router/gateway. It's a Cisco DPC3825. For about 7 years I've been using an Airport Express (g) without any issues. I'd like to now use the Express to enable Airplay (stereo is 2 rooms away from the 3825).
After a bunch of reading and trial and error I need help. Possibly the Express is simply too old to function in this setup, but I haven't given up yet. My problem is that Airport Utility won't see the Express unless it's connected via Ethernet.
While connected by Ethernet I've done the following:
- set the Express to join a WDS network
- entered the wireless network name and password in the Express
- set the Express as a WDS remote and entered the MAC address of the 3825 as the WDS main
- enabled join a wireless network on the Express
- entered the Express MAC address into the 3825 so it'll allow the Express as a client
- set the 3825 wireless protocol to 802.11n (backwards compatible, right?)
Here's the result. If the Express is connected to the 3825 by Ethernet the light glows a brilliant green, but Utility can't find it. If the Express is connected to my Macbook via Ethernet, Utility finds it but the Express flashes concerning amber. I've done several factory resets on the Express, confirmed firmware and Utility version is up to date and confirmed the settings on the Express are not lost when everything is rebooted. Also, when the Express is connected to Macbook by Ethernet, iTunes recognizes it and allows a selection of speaker outputs, not the case when not conected by Ethernet.
So, what have I missed. I've read flashing amber means the Express has a problem, but when I check it's status (again, only can do this when connected via Ethernet to Macbook) the Express says there's no problems to report.
Thanks very much,
c.

No one has replied so I'm guessing I'm hooped, two quick questions,
1. Does WDS work with an 802.11n router to connect with an 802.11g client?
2. Will Airport Utility not see an Airport Express set as WDS remote?
Thanks, c.

• Time Capsule via Internet from Windows

Frnds,
I couldnt find solve for my problem. Could anyone help me, pls?
I have TC. It work as router. TC connect via Ethernet cable. I want to connect to it from anyplace of the world via internet and use files on it. I switched on Share files in Airport Utility. I have stat IP. All should be work. But it is not working. When i check ports(137-139, 455) then i see that ports is closed. When i try to mapping ports then i have warning message that they is using and to turn it on i need to switch off Share files.
I try to connect via FTP. I opened 21 port and it is realy open. But i still could not to connect.
One more thing - i could to connect to TC via afp:// from Macbook. But i need to connect from other places using Windows.
I NEED PROFESSIONAL HELP. All eligible information and screens im ready to provide. HELPDESK CONNECTED UP!!!
sry for my english

The TC does not offer FTP and ISP do not allow SMB connection via internet due to risk. Nor apparently does the TC allow wan connection using SMB.
So the simple answer is, you will have to figure out another way in.
http://apple.stackexchange.com/questions/3178/how-to-connect-to-an-afp-server-fr om-a-windows-pc
There are no AFP client support for windows available.
https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2627410?start=0&tstart=0
Buy a vpn router and place it infront of the TC which should be bridged.. vpn to the network and then you can access the TC.. but you should understand the TC was not made to be used as a NAS nor to serve PC's.

• How do i transfer my data from macbook pro to iMac?

i just bought a iMac.  How do i transfer my itunes library, photos, files via bluetooth from macbook pro to my iMac?  Much thanks for your help!

I believe that when you boot your computer for the first time and you are following the onscreen instructions you are prompted whether you want to transfer data from an old mac or PC. If you click 'transfer from an old mac' and follow the onscreen instructions, this may work.
If you have already skipped this step you could use iCloud to transfer data. If you make sure that everything you want to transfer is synced in iCloud, this may also work.

• Mac-compatible printer, via ethernet

I have been looking around, without much luck, trying to find a Mac-compatible ethernet printer which also prints (via Ethernet) from a PC.
Does Apple or anyone have a list of Ethernet compatible printers?
Thanks!

...and I've never heard of a network-capable (ethernet) printer that didn't support Macs, either.
If you want to go kinda fancy for not too many buck$ and are looking at a specific model number suggestion, last month I found a Hewlett Packard CP 2025 DN printer on line for $400 (incl. shipping). Color, laserjet, built-in duplexer, ethernet or USB. Only things I didn't like was it doesn't have built-in wireless network (external box $65 option) and it won't take 11x17 paper (which is too bad because it supports "booklet" layout when printing duplex). But for $400, I guess I can live with those "shortcomings." Works fine with my ppc under osx, works fine with my macintel under osx, I know HP-anything works with wintel.
Moderators: I have no pecuniary interest in Hewlett Packard or any online vendor.

• Receive wireless signal and pass through via ethernet

Hi,
I'd like to know if it's possible to pass through internet via ethernet from a Time Capsule that receives a Wireless signal.
How can I do this?
Thanks!

Well, to be more specific, this a scheme of what I'm trying to do (it represents the floors in my house):

So;
- Telenet modem wired to D-link wireless router.
- D-link router to AE (wireless)
- AE to stereo (wired)
- D-link router to TC (wireless)
- TC to PC (wired)
- TC to printer (USB)
- D-link to tv (wired)
- D-link to Digibox (digital television - wired)
I want to be able to stream music from every device on the netwerk (iPad, iPhone, MBP, ..)
and print from every device. All music should be streamed from iTunes Library on TC.
I hope this is clear
Thanks in advance!

I recently purchased a MacBook Pro and transferred data from my MacBook using Migration Assistant via Ethernet cable.  I was confused about consolidating my accounts, so I continued to use my old MacBook.  Can I now update the data transfer using the same process and begin using my new MacBook Pro exclusively?  How do I consolidate my existing accounts?
Thank you.

Of course. It does everything it did before Yosemite. You just won't be able to send or receive SMS messages with it.
