AUTO FLOW?

Is there an auto flow selection when placing text from microsoft word?
Leopard/Indesign 5.0.3/Intel Mac

Okay, I think I have it. It's been a while since I've used InDesign. . . . So . . . you set up master pages when you set up the new document by specifying the margins there. After the doc is set up, the Master pages shown in the sidebar "pages view" serve to indicate the placement of design elements or to insert repetitive text, etc. -- not to set margins. I was trying to use the master pages to set the margins for flowing the text into my document. duh.
Thank you, Nini, for your help when you said you don't need textframes to place text . . .
Appreciate your help!

  • Auto-Flow not formatting to master

    I am placing a Word 2010 document into an InDesign document with facing pages. The Word document text places correctly, but the formatting does not.  For example, if I have three columns in both of my Master pages, autoflow places it in two columns, and the top and bottom margins (height) are too high and too low.  Any idea what might be going wrong?  Here's the Master pages.
    Here's the first spread after auto-flow (note two columns):
    And the second spread (two columns and wrong margins).
    Thanks!

    Steve and Peter,
    Thank you for responding (I was expecting an E-mail notification of responses, otherwise I would have replied earlier).
    As it turns out, it appears something was wrong with my Master page. I had a similar Master page in the same document, and it auto-flowed the same Word text without any problem, so I just made a copy of that Master page and used it with full success.
    I (thoughtlessly) deleted the original Master page, I probably wouldn't be able to recreate the same problem to figure out what happened.  Practically, I don't need to know anyway, since everything is working fine now!
    Thanks again.

  • Auto merge or auto flow text

    I am working on parking stickers for my school and want to be able to put in the number without having to create/dup the sticker 250 times for each individual sticker.  Is that possible?  Almost like an auto flow or in microsoft speak, mail merge for lack of a better description.  I could probably find it if I knew what it is called in InDesign.  Any help is appreciated.  Thanks

    To do it directly in ID you need to have one sticker per number in your file, but these are really a specailty printing item, and I'm suspect any printer who has the capability to print  them can also add the numbering. Ask the printer...

  • How to auto flow text in pages

    Perhaps I am wording this incorrectly and have not found the answer that already exists on the forums, but here goes...
    How do you autoflow your text between text boxes? In previous versions Pages allowed you to create multiple text boxes on the same page as well as other pages and autoflow your text in your preferred order. It seems that in this new VERY MESSED UP iteration of Pages, this is no longer possible. I am asking the question in the hopes that someone with more knowledge can steer me in the right direction. Part B to this question is WHY IN THE HECK DID APPLE SCREW UP THIS PERFECTLY GOOD PROGRAM??  ;-)

    It is a question we have all been asking for 4 months.
    Pages '08/'09 should still be in your Applications/iWork folder.

  • Text flows create a delay when an overflow creates a new page, preventing you from reading the page number, giving error

    Hi all!
    I am creating a script to generate automatically a photo catalog; the idea is to prepare a master document with a text frame in the master spread with auto flowing, then insert images with their caption by the script, letting the system create automatically the subsequent pages when necessary by an unique flow of text.
    My catalog is divided in sections, each represented by a different master spread; so I have to know in which page I am working when the script put there an image, just to link the current page to the proper master spread.
    To simplify everything I have resumed the core of my script here, using text instead of images:
    /* load a master document, only containing an empty text frame in the master spread, connected to the main text flow */
    var doc = app.open(new File("~/Desktop/mySampleDoc.indd"));
    /* I work on the story, thinking that whenever the textframe of the first page will be full, another text frame will be created in the next page (automatically created) */
    var story = doc.pages[0].textFrames[0].parentStory;
    /* now I put some lines of text into the story, expecting the creation of a new page when the first one will be full */
    for (var i = 0; i < 100; i++) {
       /* this is next line: */
        story.insertionPoints[-1].contents = "this is line n. " + i + "\r";
        /* here I want to know on which page is the line just created (error is generated here just during the creation of the new page + text frame) */
        thisPage = story.insertionPoints[-1].parentTextFrames[0].parentPage.documentOffset;
       /* and now I print page number */
        story.insertionPoints.item(-1).contents = "current page: " + thisPage + "\r";
    The big problem is: when the first text frame is full and an overflow is generated, a new page with a new text frame belonging to the main text flow (as the master spread wants) is generated; but it seems my script requests the page number before the new page with the new text frame is born, and an error is given.
    It seems like the script goes too fast in respect to the creation of the new page.
    If I delete the line thisPage = story.insertionPoints[-1].parentTextFrames[0].parentPage.documentOffset; everything is ok.
    I tried to introduce a delay until 3 seconds without any effect.
    I tried also to show or zoom the new page before the page number request, thinking to force the system to wait until page is really born, also without any effect (by the way, I was not able to show the page during the script's additions of text!).
    Someone can help me?
    Many thanks to everyone
    Roberto

    Many thanks: you are right!
    Unfortunately, I am at the very beginning with ExtendScript, and there are so many things I don't know until now...
    With recompose() everything works very well, and it give me a solution also for redrawing the page while the script is working...
    Many thanks, again!

  • Is it possible to do auto numbering?

    I'm new to ID3. I'm wondering if there is a way to create a field or text frame and then have it populated with numbers in sequence order. I want to make race number bibs for my local high school cross-country teams.
    I'm thinking of setting up the original document three-up on 11x17. I don't want to have to go in manually put in every number.
    Is there a way to do this automatically?

    I do numbered tickets like this using a text file exported from Excel and auto-flow.
    Use Excel to make a list of numbers, then export to text file, each number as a separate record (build the list vertically, not horizontally). In your ID document set up the master page with three linked text frames to hold the numbers, and create a paragraph style for the formatting, including in the Keep Options section that the paragraph should start in a new frame. You might as well add any other repeating elements while you're on the master page, too.
    Place the text file, holding the shift key for autoflow, by putting the cursor over the first empty text frame position on page one and ID will add pages until you run out of numbers.

  • How can I flow text alternate pages

    I want to typeset two documents of 100 pages each in such a way that they appear on opposite facing pages of a book.
    In other words, document one will appear on pages 1.3.5.7.9 etc, flowing through to page 199 and document two will start on page 2 and flow to pages 4,6,8,10 etc to page 200.
    Also, the page numbers must show and be consecutive from 1 to 200.
    I don't think indesign can handle this.
    Do any of you know better?
    Wojtczak

    Here are a couple of screen captures that should help:
    Select your master spread (double-click it's name in the panel). Use the Type tool to draw two text frames that fill your margin guides, which should be set to the size of the text blocks you want to have in your document. I've marked the in and out ports on the left frame in the screen shot. Note that at the moment they are empty sqaures. When text is threaded from frame to frame, at least one port in each frame in the thread will have a small blue triangle inside it. As long as you are not in Preview mode, or Overprint Preview, which hide non-printing elements, you can see the threading path by going to View > Show Text Threads.
    InDesign puts odd-numbered pages on the right and evens on the left, by default, and you will probably not want to play tricks to change this. You probably also want both of your parallel threads to begin on the same spread, so you'll need to start with at least three pages, and begin the text flow on pages 2 and 3 (or some later spread if you have a lot of front matter to include). To add pages drag the master icon for the page into the lower half of the Pages panel or use the panel menu to issue an Insert Pages command.
    This is the pages 2 & 3 spread. Becasue the master text frames are the same size as the margin guides you don't see them, but they are there waiting for text. File > Place... and find the first text file you want to place. Your cursor will show what looks like the upper left corner of a page. Hold the Shift Key and the cursor will change to have a squiggly arrow which indicates that you will be auto-flowing text, creating new pages autoimatically untill the entire stroy is on a page. Don't click yet.
    Still holding down the shift key, move the cursor anywhere inside the margin area, WELL AWAY FROM ANY GUIDES. If you click on a guide accidentally the master frame will not be used. As you move over the empty master frame the curso will change again to have large parentheses surrounding it. When you see that is is safe, while still hoding down the shift key, to click and release. DO NOT DRAG the cursor, just click and release. You should now have a bunch of new pages, with text only on the left side. Go back to Page 3 and repeat for the second story.

  • Text Flow from master pages -- please help!

    I'm so frustrated. For years I used Quark without a hitch. Haven't done DTP in years (but use DreamWeaver (after GoLive died ) and Illustrator) but need to typeset my book in InDesign and cannot get the most basic things down. Please have pity!
    I created a master page (facing pages) where each side has a rectangle frame tool. When I went to a document page I could not put any text in that frame, but finally found out that you hold down command-shift and click in the frame to "unlock" it or make it accessible when outside of the master page edit area. (Sheesh -- is that remotely intuitive???)
    Now that I'm able to get the test in the frame on a real page, I can't get it to FLOW from one page to another.
    Basically, I have an entire book and I just need to dump all the text into the template I've created. And I need ID to add as many pages as necessary (from the master page) for all the text to show up. This seems like it should be easy but I'm at a loss.
    Any help?
    After I get that to work, I need to be able to have the first page of each chapter use a different master page, because the look has to be slightly different. So any tips on that would be welcome as well.
    Thanks in advance. Your help is appreciated!

    While I agree that use of master text frames is usaully not desirable, you CAN do so if you wish, but if you expect to auto flow into them you MUST NOT override them onto the document page.
    Instead, issue the Place command and select your text file, then hover the loaded cursor over the master frame area, being careful to avoid any margin, column or ruler guides, and hold the Shift Key and click. When you move over an empty frame you'll see the loaded cursor change so the symbolic text is enclosed in parentheses rather than having the right angle in the upper left corner. That's your clue that the eixiting frame will be used, and holding shift will caasue ID to make additional pages untill all the text is in place.

  • Auto-fit web text on n900

    i have a nokia n900, when you zoom-in (double-tap zoom isnt enough 'coz the text is still too small to read in many occasions), how do you make the text auto-flow/auto-fit the screen so you dont have to scroll right-and left ? its pretty annoying.

    Unfortunately, Firefox for Mobile only supports full page zoom. I agree that it's annoying.
    It doesn't look like there are any add-ons for this yet either (yet). https://addons.mozilla.org/mobile
    Hopefully there'll be more focus on usability tweaks like this in the future.

  • Header.php exists but does not show up on every page.

    Hi.  I am starting from scratch with this.
    part1.
    My objective is to create a website that takes advantage of DreamweaverCC's fluid-grid-layout so that my web Site auto-flows on
    smartphones, tablets and desktops/laptops.
    file > new > fluid-grid-layout.
    By default, it says 'unnamed.css'
    I named it  testSite.css
    click okay.
    (This is the only way to begin with a fluid-grid-layout - I think).
    It opens a split view.
    On the right frame is a DIV that has this text inside.
    "Use Insert Panel for additional Fluid Grid Layout Elements. Note: All Fluid Layout tags must be contained within the "gridContainer" div tag."
    In the right frame,
    <script src="file:///Macintosh%20HD/Applications/Adobe%20Dreamweaver%20CC/Configuration/BuiltIn/F luid%20Grid%20Layout/respond.min.js"></script>
    </head>
    <body>
    <div class="gridContainer clearfix">
      <div id="div1" class="fluid">Use Insert Panel for additional Fluid Grid Layout Elements. Note: All Fluid Layout tags must be contained within the "gridContainer" div tag.</div>
    </div>
    </body>
    </html>
    QUESTIONS - CLARIFICATION.
    Question ????
    class = 'gridContainer clearfix"
    div id = "div1 class = "fluid"
    So all of the <div>s that I place inside of the gridContainer will all be assigned the 'class'  fluid.
    Yes ?
    And I define div ids so that I can use css styles
    Yes ?
    I understand class in Java but I do not understand it here in Dreamweaver.
    Please explain.
    part2.
    I inserted 4 <div>s into the gridContainer and assigned them specific div ids.
    div id = square1
    div id = square2
    div id = square3
    div id = square4
    I see these assignments in the code.
    But in the properties panel with HTML (not css panel) selected.
    It shows  ID None.
    Question ????
    Why doesn't the assigned div =id  in the code show in the properties panel.
    part3a.
    index.php is my main web page.
    It has several images (the 4 different squares).
    I created a separate .html file for each square: square1.html square2.html square3.html square4.html.
    At this point, each of those pages has only one sentence.  'contents for square#N) will be on this page'
    I used the properties panel and linked the 4 images on index.php to these .html files.
    When I 'View in Safari/Firefox'  each of those images (squares) when clicked - bring me to the appropriate page.
    So I've got some of this working
    part3b.
    I know that some of you have already tried to assist with this but it is not working for me.
    I created a file called header.php
    The contents of header.php does not have any <tags> at all.
    The contents is this:
    <h1> This will be the header for all of my web pages.</h1>
    In index.php I included this in the code as such:
    <body>
    <? php require_once('header.php'); ?>     // this is line 34
    <div class="gridContainer clearfix">
      // div ids for the images etc. etc.
    </body>
    </html>
    View in Safari/Firefox
    Parse error: parse error in /Library/WebServer/Documents/dwwdSite/index.php on line 34
    I tried this.
    <? php include_once('header.php'); ?>
    <? php include('header.php'); ?>
    and I get the same exact error.
    When I 'view in Safari/Firefox'  header.php  it displays what I want:
    This will be the header for all of my web pages.
    Question ????
    What am I doing incorrectly ?
    From one of my other posts - as we got onto this topic, it was suggested that I just place the php code:
    <? php  include('header.php'); ?>
    within the index.html file exactly where I want it to show up.
    I want it to show up at the top of each page.
    Well at this point it is not showing up anywhere !!
    But if I have header.php active in Dreamweaver and 'view in safari/firefox'
    the browser does show the header.php page.
    part4.
    Question ????
    And should I include
    <? php require_once('header.php'); ?>
    at the top of each of the square.html files if I want the header to show up on each of those pages.
    I think this makes sense.
    part5.
    Question ????
    When I view testSite.css
    I understand that it has 3 different sets of selectors for each of the 3 different devices.
    But how do I 'assign'  css properties to the contents inside of header.php ?
    With header.php active/open, from the 'properties panel' I can select CSS and choose: font, size, color from there and it works
    but should I not have this included in the testSite.css ?
    Lots of questions. Hope that I explained it in an organized fashion.
    thanks again.

    > So all of the <div>s that I place inside of the gridContainer will all be assigned the 'class'  fluid.
    Nope - but everything that you insert using the Insert panel will give you the opportunity to specify that it's a fluid element, which you can do by enabling the checkbox on the dialog. This means that you CAN insert a <div> that is not a fluid element. It's only the ones that you insert as a fluid element that will get that class automatically.
    >And I define div ids so that I can use css styles
    Assigning an ID to any element on the page allows you to target that element with a particular CSS rule.
    > I understand class in Java but I do not understand it here in Dreamweaver.
    > Please explain.
    There is no similarity at all. There are four ways you can identify a page element to apply a CSS rule:
    1. By tag, e.g., all paragraph tags on the page.
    2. By context, e.g., any paragraph tag that is within a <nav> element.
    3. By 'class' assignment, e.g., any element that has been given a particular "class" attribute -> <p class="foo">
    4. By ID, e.g., any element that has been given a particular "ID" attribute -> <p id="foo">
    The weight of any style (i.e., which one to use in the event of conflict) is determined by a number of characteristics of the CSS 'selector' that carries the rule.
    > Why doesn't the assigned div =id  in the code show in the properties panel.
    Assuming your code is correct, it will, e.g.,
    <div id = "square1"></div>
    <div id = "square2"></div>
    <div id = "square3"></div>
    <div id = "square4"></div>
    Try this -
    <html>
    <head></head>
    <body>
    <?php require_once('header.php'); ?>     // this is line 34
    <div class="gridContainer clearfix">
      // div ids for the images etc. etc.
    </body>
    </html>
    and I get the same exact error.
    Yes - there is no space in "<?php".
    Let's start with that.

  • What is the best way to work with Word documents in The InDesign CS4???

    I work in Microsoft Word 2007 and all my documents have *.doc format.
    What is the best way to work with Word documents in InDesign CS4???
    David Blatner says to avoid copying and pasting text from Word instead of placing it (Ctrl+D).
    How about pasting RTF or Text Document???
    I want to make book's layout in ID CS4 and its main feature is that there is the left page with text and the right - with graphics.
    So, as I understand to place the text on each page I must create for example 70 Word documents and place each item on 70 left pages???
    It loks like wasting time. I sthere another way of making such layout???  What kind????

    It's best to place any text.
    You can have all of your text in one file and use auto-flow to add threaded text frames and pages as required (Hold down the Shift key when you click the loaded text cursor), but it's a little non-standard to have the thread only on one side of the spread from the auto-flow perspective, so you'll have to set up properly.
    This is one case where a master text frame will work to your advantage. On your master page spread, add a text frame to the left page, but not to the right (or at least not threaded to one on the right -- for some other project you might actually want two independent text threads). Hold the loaded cursor over a frame on the left side of a document page and auto-flow. ID will add new spreads as necessary, but only put the text on the left side.

  • How to autoflow a very long word in InDesign?

    I am trying to insert/import/paste a text into InDesign. The text contains some text-strings (or 'words') that are more than 3000 characters long. This causes InDesign to have overset text, and not being able to auto-flow the text.
    When I import (or paste) the text I am shift+clicking (I have also tried option+shift+click) to make the text auto-flow down along the pages, but the auto-flow stops at page 16 (where the long 'words' start to occur), although my file contains more than 200 pages. I get the little red plus sign below in the last text-box, that indicates that I have overset text.
    I then tried to click the red plus sign and continue the text-flow on the following pages, but I just end up with empty text-boxes on the following pages every time I try click the red plus sign.
    I removed the long 'words', and tried again, and now InDesign does not appear to have an issue with my text. So the problem is caused by the long 'words'.
    The format of the text is unimportant (I have tried .rtf and .txt) and InDesign is able to recognise both.
    However, I cannot insert spaces or end-of-line into these long 'words', as this would change the 'words'. The number of characters in each 'word' is important, and if I start adding extra spaces or end-of-line charecters it would change the 'words'.
    I have a lot of places in the text where I have these long 'words', and I would like to avoid too much clicking and inserting to get around this issue.
    I am running InDesign CS3 on a Macintosh 10.5.8 computer
    I would be grateful if anyone have an idea how to work around these.
    Thanks in advance for both your time and help

    Why don't the words break at the hyphens? Would additional hyphens be a problem?
    Hyphenation is a paragraph level attribute, so it can be found inthe panel menu for the Paragraph panel or the Control panel when the Text tool is active, or it can be turned on or off in the paragraph style assigned to the text, which is probably the best place to do it.
    Perhaps they aren't true hyphens? To test, copy and paste one into the Find What text field and type a hyphen into the the Change To field, and try a single find/change. If that works, save copies of the documents before trying find/change all.

  • Move group of pages from one InDesign file to another InDesign File using VB.Script

    Dear team,
    I am trying to move group of InDesign pages from one indesign file to another indesign file using vb.script.
    I have written the code like
    Dim Pages=IndDoc.Pages
    Dim Mytype=TypeName(Pages)
    Pages.Move(InDesign.idLocationOptions.idBefore,IndDoc1.Pages.LastItem)
    but it is giving an error as method Move is not a member of Pages
    please give mme the solution to move the Multiple pages or a group of page from one Indd to another Indd.

    Hey Peter, if I wan to move several page that part of Auto Flow text, I checked the "delete page after moving" but the content still there, not deleted.
    Is there any way to delete it automatically, just to make sure I have moved that autoflowed page?

  • Solve this and you're a genious: Port problems with SRW2016

    Equipment:
    One SRW2016 fresh out of the box and set to factory default settings
    One Dell Laptop running Windows XP
    One custom network appliance running a full TCP/IP stack but limited to 10M half duplex.
    Setup:
    The laptop has a static IP address. The network appliance has a static IP address. The switch has the factory default static IP address.  All three devices are on the same subnet.
    The laptop is plugged into port 1 on the switch, and the network appliance is plugged into various ports as described below.  The laptop is set to continuously ping the network appliance using the ping –t command.
    Problem:
    When the network appliance is plugged into switch port 2 I am unable to ping the device from the laptop.  When I plug it into port 3 I get the same result.  In fact I am unable to ping the network appliance on any of the switch ports EXCEPT for ports 7, 8, 15, and 16.  As soon as I plug the network appliance into any one of those four ports, the pings are replied to.
    My question is - why am I unable to communicate with the network appliance on any ports other then ports 7, 8, 15, and 16? What makes these four ports different then the others?
    Other Notes:
    I have a second Linksys SRW2016 and notice the exact same behavior.
    I’ve also tried a Linksys SLM2008 8-Port switch and experience NO communication problems on any ports.
    I’ve tried a hub and it works 100%
    I notice that after trying to ping the network appliance on a non-working port, I can see the device properly listed in the ARP table on both the switch AND laptop. So I am unable to ping the device yet it somehow makes it into the ARP table.
    Any help with this issue would be greatly appreciated.
    Best regards,
    Rob

    Hi,
    Thanks for explanation that not all ports are the same.
    I've just had a similar issue with a Siemens C470IP ip phone. It worked fine with my Dlink 8-port DES3010F switch which I've just replaced with the SRW2016, and also when plugged into my Draytek 2820n ADSL router's LAN ports. I'm a bit disappointed that I happened to plug the device into port 3 and suddenly my monitoring showed that things were not working properly. I checked cables and then remembered that auto-negotiation sometimes can cause problems.
    On the SRW2016 if I leave the port with auto-negotiate on I see:
                                  Flow
    Port   Enable   Link  Spd/Dpx Ctrl
    g3      ENABLE   UP    10H     Off
    Yet inspite this pinging the device does not work properly. That is I get from ping:

    Doing the explicit configuration of 10Mb Half duplex as suggested does not help either. In fact it's worse as I get no responses from a ping and it does not make any difference if I enable flow control or not.
    So must be the Siemens device? Well plugging into port 16 as suggested makes all the difference:
    Auto negotiation works and the link comes up and works fine:
    That is:
                    Auto          Flow
      Port   Enable  Neg.  Spd/Dpx Ctrl
    g13      ENABLE   On   Auto    Off
    g14      ENABLE   On   Auto    Off
    g15      ENABLE   On   Auto    Off
    g16      ENABLE   On   Auto    Off
    and
                                    Flow
      Port   Enable   Link  Spd/Dpx Ctrl
      g14     ENABLE   DOWN  -----   ---
    g15     ENABLE   DOWN  -----   ---
    g16     ENABLE   UP    10H     Off
    and ping shows what I expect:

    So why is this broken? Is it a firmware issue or a hardware issue?  The firmware I'm using is I believe the latest though it looks rather old:
      Boot Version:          1.0.1 (Date:  11-Jun-2006, Time:  18:43:59)
      Software Version:      1.2.2b (Date:  28-Feb-2008, Time:  16:47:37)
      Hardware Version:      00.03.00
    If this affects me it's likely to affect others and I really wanted to buy the switch to add to the number of "managed ports" I have. This current behaviour is rather disappointing and I would have hoped that perhaps a firmware upgrade would solve this, or the documentation would be clearer that some devices do not work properly (auto-negotiation seems to be rather a troublesome subject).  Is such a fix available?
