Automated printer installs.

Hello,
I work for a school board that has many IP based printers in many locations. Every year we re-image close to 90% of the PC's in every school. We have the imaging down so that it is nearly automated. What we are now looking for is an automated printing solution, one that will be able to automatically install printers on a PC with out any user intervention. Most of these sites do not have a local server or high bandwidth lines. So scripting from a login script is out.
Does anyone happen to have any good suggestions?
HP Jet directs are the flavour of choice.
TX.

What kind of printers and PC's are you running? Are all the printers and computers accessible from a common network?
There are a couple of ways to automate printer installation.
You could create an image that includes the printer installation so when the next time you re-image the printer installation is automatically installed.
Some of our printers have command line installation tools (like this one for the C8100).
I've used Apple's Bonjour application with great success to quickly install print-only drivers on PC's. I've put this application and a copy of the print drivers on a shared network drive and was able to install drivers on a set of new PC's quickly this way.
I'm curious what others suggest. While I'm mostly a real-time wireless engineer, I've always been fascinated with the complexity of IT issues.

• Need help with Automating Printer and LPR installation

I work for someone who has a need for automating the print installation of LPR print port to mac laptops. Obviously this will need to cover anything OS X 10.3 and above. All of this needs to be done command line via a batch file of sorts.
I am a windows and Linux guy, however I just bought a Mac and starting to like the new Leopard OS and the capabilities of boot camp.
What I need:
1) how to install LPR port to the laptop
2) installing a printer from a some sort of cab file with correct port and drivers. (in windows we use print migrator, however the cab files we use for windows will obviously not work with different port types and drivers)
3) finally some clean up type script that will clean up any temp files I had to create or such.
I kind of need this soon so if anyone knows how or could point me in the right direction. It would be greatly appreciated.

If you force restart the computer on the freeze up, or force quit the printer adding window, does the printer appear in the print and scan system preference? In other words, did the printer successfully install? (is it possible that the setup part of the install failed, but the actual install worked?)
If so, you might be able to set the configurations yourself.
Open up the print and scan system preference. Double click on the printer.
When the printer queue window opens up, you should be able to click on the printer setup button.
Go through all the tabs and set things up the way you like.

• Printer Installer software closes immediately at "Applying updates"

I have a Photosmart 2575, running Windows 7 X64 and the printer Installer software closes immediately at "Applying updates" right after clicking OK to accept EULA. I have had problems with driver removal and installation every time I've had to do this, which is fairly regularly because I start getting an error regarding the HP software when trying to scan something. I've had the same problem on 4 different computers and 3 operating systems.
I started by uninstalling all HP software. I then ran Revo Uninstaller to remove and traces of HP software. I then ran a Level 4 uninstall. (rebooting countless times during this process and after). I tried installing the driver manually as well to no avail. I also tried the automated utility that jsut kept trying to download and isntall the 300mb+ file over and over after failing. This has been an ongoing problem and still no changes have been made to the installer or software in just under 3 years.

Based on the thousands of posts around the internet with this issue, I figured I would post the solution that worked for me as there are so many others with the same problem.
Launch the installation and follow the steps untll the License agreement step.
Click the 2nd link - Internet Connection Usage Settings
Mark both of the options as No, Thanks and approve.
Accept the License Agreement and proceed.

• Solved printer installation problem – "error-user-request-value-too-long"

A discussion in July 2006 left the problem of printer installation unsolved. My contacts with Apple Support have also led to frustration for everyone.
Whenever I have tried to install any printer I end up with the error message:
"error-user-request-value-too-long".
Luckily I discovered the shareware program "Printer set up repair" on Versiontracker. It worked wonders in 5 minutes. Now everything is fully functioning. It also provides an extremely useful log-file telling you which (often hidden) files that are missing or damaged.
Address: www.fixamacsoftware.com/software
Phew!

Well, I tried all of that and I'm still getting the error message. I've also repaired disk permissions and run Disk Warrior. When I repaired disk permissions, many HP printer items showed up in the list.

• Automating Forte installation

Hi all,
I'm looking for a way to automate the installation of Forte. e.g.
command-lie options for "setup.exe", creating an input or "ini" file etc...
My reasoning is in hopes of minimizing the amount of user-input required for

At Carlson Hospitality Worldwide we solved this exact problem. We started
out just as you are hoping we could somehow use Forté's provided
installation process, but we quickly gave up. Instead, we created our own.
Here's how:
First, we used an uninstall tool which logged the Forté Run-Time
installation process (registry settings, files added, and files modified).
We then used that log and InstallShield Professional 5.1 to create our own
Forté Run-Time installation package which duplicated the one provided by
Forté but setup the registry with hard-coded values rather than asking the
installer. We then used WinZip Self-Extractor to package all of the files
into a single self-extracting and self-running executable that didn't prompt
the user to do anything (when the self-extractor .exe is run, it unzips to a
temporary directory and then automatically runs the setup.exe).
We purchased InstallShield Professional, WinZip, and WinZip Self-Extractor,
and all three products were inexpensive and easy to install, learn, and use.
At the time we also were working closely with Forté to let them know what we
were doing in hopes that they would eventually provide enough functionality
in their own installation process so that in the future other's would not
have to repeat what we did. I'm not sure what the current status of that
request is, so it may be worth your while to contact Forté directly.

• "printer installer" window shows up at every boot after installing printer

After installing successfully a Samsung printer, everytime I boot Mountain Lion there is a "printer installer" window shows up.
Any way to get rid of this?

I've come across someone who had this before - they'd forgotten to take the installer disc out of the optical drive so it ran its installer at every boot. Any chance that's it?

• Automated Printing

Hi All,
I have read numerous topics on this site regarding automated printing of documents. It basically boils down to finding the record you want, simulate clicking the print button and then send a ENTER command to the keyboard to click the OK Button on the print dialog.
Everything works perfectly, but up to the point where the print dialog opens. I have now moved the SendKeys.Send("") to the menu event that I catch on the print menu click (520), but the print dialog is still not open at this point in time. I've also tried using System.Threading.Thread.Sleep(X), but that doesn't help either.
Any suggestions?
Thanks a lot in advance,
Adele
PS: This development is on SBO 2004

Adele,
I am assuming that you already read this thread on this subject, but I just wanted to check.. I have not tried this, but the folks on this thread state that this works ...

• Android DT automated app installer now spotted on Verizon phones, is your phone clean? ?

Android bloatware alert: DT Ignite automated app installer spotted on T-Mobile, Verizon phones | PCWorld

If you read about it, it is quite scary.
It allows the carrier to get into your phone and install software such as promotions, ads, banners, etc.
The software can bypass the installer and install it self without your knowledge or consent.
It can also install bloatware which uses the metered data you use at your expense.
Right now it has been on the note 4 and the Lg g3 (from what I read).
It is real and currently in all the news. The crazy thing about the software is that it is granted access to all information on your phone and can install anything it wants w/o your knowledge or consent...actually you can't even say no or uninstall it. Currently the only phones that seem to be immune are the nexus phones and of course any windows/apple products.

Production Print is a separate install from LC ES/LC ES2 so it does not appear in Configuration Manager.

• Difficulty with printer installation? Try HP Diagnostics

Need to know your network keys to setup your wireless printer?
Do you need to find out if your printer is properly connected to your network?
Would you like to know if a firewall is blocking printer communication and/or software installation?
If you are experiencing problems installing or connecting to your networked HP printer, you should download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor to help solve the issues mentioned above and more.
The HP Print and Scan Doctor will guide you through troubleshooting your network printer setup and connectivity problems. It also provides you with a wealth of information regarding your network and, in some cases, automatically fixes network connectivity issues.
The HP Print and Scan Doctor runs on Windows XP, Vista, Win 7, and Win 8. You will need administrator privileges in order to run the utility.
Get it here: HP Print and Scan Doctor
Please Give HP Your Feedback! If you use any of the HP Diagnostic Utilities, HP would like to hear from you afterward – there’s a survey link built right into each of the utilities and it only takes a minute or two. Your ideas on how to improve the utilities help HP design future features and enhancements to the utilities. Thanks for taking the time to respond.
Installing a printer with USB (not network)? Try the HP Print Print and Scan Doctor
HP suggests that you download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, which also helps for USB connected printers. While not all types of printing communication problems are addressed with this software utility, many common problems are resolved. This utility can be used to troubleshoot and in some cases directly fix common connectivity problems experienced with many of hp’s all-in-one devices when used on Windows XP, Vista, Win 7, and Win 8 systems (administrator privileges are necessary in order to run the utility).
If the HP Print and Scan Doctor detects missing or incompatible software parts, the utility will offer to uninstall the current parts so that a subsequent reinstall process will go smoothly. The uninstall / reinstall process usually resolves printing connectivity issues with a minimum of further fuss.
Get it here: HP Print and Scan Doctor

• HP3054 Printer installation problem with v10.7.2

When I try to install my HP3054 printer, it says, the installer is not compatible with my operating system (10.7.2). Can I download an updated installer? • HP 7210 all in one printer installation error on windows 8.1 update

We recently got updated by Microsoft from windows 8 to 8.1. After that time, the scanning function did not work as it did before and the HP menu utility was different. I went through the HP Info service and it said the printer software was not fully functional. I then was told to download the latest hp install software for the 7210, which I did for windows 8/8.1. The install stops with a fatal MCI error code 1935. I then went to the troubleshooting guide for error codes (the example box shows almost an identical error message to mine) but it only shows windows XP, Vista, and 7.0. There is no troubleshooting guide for windows 8 or 8.1 with this code. I then followed the "HP Solutions for Install Errors (Windows 8.0 and 8.1) and performed all the tasks. I updated windows to current and same error. I then shut off all startup services and got the same error. I am now out of idea's or help.
The printer has been great and we have had no problem with it since we've owned it. At this time we are without a printer completely because the install process removed the previous installed software.
Forgot to mention this is using USB connection, but the install never gets far enough to ask me to connect it, so it really doesn't matter.
Any advice would be extremely welcome.
Thank you
Joe

Hi @DelanoJoe
I see you are getting a fatal MCI error code 1935 and the documentation specific to that code is not for Windows 8 or 8.1. I will certainly do all I can to help out
Please complete the following steps and let me know the outcome;
Hold down the Windows Logo key () on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box, type %temp%

Download the software and choose to save as, save to desktop > AIO_CDB_Net_Full_Win_WW_140_408-4.exe
After the software downloads and extracts, open the temp folder again, use the instructions from step 1.
Look for, and open the folder starting with 7z (Example: 7zS2356)
Open folder Util
Open folder CCC
If you have an HP computer run the L3uninstall.exe. If you have a non-HP computer run the L4uninstall.exe
When the uninstall has completed restart the computer
Follow these steps to reset the registry settings and options for Windows Installer.
Hold down the Windows Logo key on the keyboard and the 'R' to open the run box
In the Open box, type msiexec /unregister, and then click OK.
