AVCHD - 2560 x 1080

I've just been messing around with some AVCHD...tut.
Using Log and Transfer, the files are coming in as 2560 x 1080 pixels and there's no way to get it to behave in the timeline. It seems to be in some mega cinemascope frame size.
No matter what you do with regards sequence settings it doesn't take on it's correct aspect ratio.
Using the Apple Pro Res codec 422. It's certainly strange, even quicktime reports the frame size as this odd size. Apple intermediate codec in the sequence settings changes it to letterboxed and renders it into a long thin picture!
The other odd thing is that when the sequence is set to the correct HD size of 1920 x 1080, when you drop the clip in the timeline it cuts off the excess pixels and doesn't squeeze them into the frame as you'd expect.
Any idea on where I'm going wrong? Who came up with this format anyway, it's not like we don't have enough already!

  • Macbook Pro Retina HDMI Does Not Support 2560 x 1080

I have both the early and late 2013 rMBP 15 inch but it seems like the early 2013 does not support my Dell U2913WM at maximum resolution of 2560 x 1080 for some reason on HDMI. Are the HDMI ports any different between the two? I'm tried using SwitchResX, but at 2560 x 1080, I can only go up to 53 Hz before it says invalid configuation on the early 2013 rMBP. On the late 2013 rMBP, it can output 2560 x 1080 at 60 Hz fine. It would seem like both graphics cards are more than capable of pushing this resolution, and if I connect through Displayport, they're both fine too. I was hoping to use HDMI though to free up a Thunderbolt port. Why are the HDMI ports not outputting at the same capabilities?

Absolutely, I understand that but I'm wondering if or why Apple has limited the HDMI port on the early 2013 rMBP. HDMI 1.4 should be more than capable at outputting up to 4k resolution, so it would seem like Apple is intentially limiting the early 2013 rMBP to HDMI 1.2? At least one post from as early as 2012 seems to suggest that installing Windows on a rMBP allows higher outputs. I thought Mavericks included support for HDMI 1.4 (http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?101431-10-9-Mavericks-4K-working-tes ting-it-now) but did they not extend it down to the early 2013 rMBP? Seems like it would be able to support it, no?
Perhaps the better question is whether anyone has been able to output anything at over 1080P on anything other than the latest rMBP after upgrading to Mavericks?
    From the earlier discussion:
"The port definitely supports it, but OS X is another story. If I boot into Windows and connect it to a display capable of displaying 2560x1440 over HDMI, it just works. If I'm in OSX, it refuses to allow anything over 1920x1200. Even if I try to force the resolution with SwitchResX, it doesn't work. If I create a custom resolution with a 40Hz refresh rate instead of 60Hz, then it does actually work. 2560x1440 @ 40Hz fits within the bandwidth constraints of a single link at 165MHz. So it appears that OSX limits the port to 1.2 frequencies. I'm not realy sure why -- HDMI 1.4 should allow for frequencies upto 340MHz, and the hardware is clearly capable based on Windows."
Now that Mavericks supports higher than 1080P over HDMI at least on the latest rMBP, did they just not extend that support to earlier rMBP's even though the hardware is capable of it?

  • How to set up 2560 x 1080 resolution on mac pro 2007

    Hello
    I have a mac pro 2007 and need to install a new screen Dell U2913WM with display 2560 x 1080 ( ultra-sharp wide monitor)
However It does not exist in the display preferences and the CD provided does bot have installation software for Mac.
    What can I do?
    Please help me.

What is it that people don't list what graphic card they have?
You have the OEM 7300GT still? it has one dual link DVI and one single, try the other.

  • AVCHD 1920 x 1080 Help Please

Can any body please tell me if it is possible to remove the black bars at the top and bottom of my finished DVD, initially I start off importing my AVCHD files from my Sony HXR-MC50 into premiere pro cs5 the files are 1920 x1080. Once I have finished with all the editing I export using the following settings:-Format MPEG2-DVD, once complete I then import this into encore and burn to DVD, I end up with a DVD that plays fine however it has a black bar at the top and bottom, is there anyway these can be removed so footage fits the TV screen.
    Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the forum:
Did you export to widescreen: the Pixel Aspect Ratio set to 1.212 (if you are on ntsc)?
Dont look at the source i am on PAL.

  • Full HD AVCHD Transocde

I've just used panasonic SD5 AVCHD camcorder to shoot some 1920x1080 Full HD footage and import to FCP. After I transcoded to ProRes 422, the picture size becomes 2560 x 1080 in square pixel.
Is FCP can only support 1440x1080 AVCHD transcode?
    Thanx!

Looks like this issue is know since it also existed in iMovie 7 and Apple just correct the problem with teh iMovie 7.1 update. The issue still exists in FCP but hopefully they also release the fix to FCP.

  • AVCHD edit in PE10 share to DVD or Blue Ray

I am currently editing a project in AVCHD and plan on making DVD and BR discs.  Not all the people who want this footage have blue ray players or HD TVs.   The footage is of sporting events with lots of action and camera movement.    What I have found in doing many trial samples is the DVD quality is poor that PE10 produces when using AVCHD files.   I have done some limited editing with DV from an old camcorder in PE10 and it looks much better than the AVCHD rendered to a DVD disc.  Since the AVCHD files are much higher quality I was very disappointed that I can't get the same quality as an old camcorder that was mini DV.  After reading various forums and Steve Grisetti's book I have a work around but it seem crazy to go through all these steps.   Does this make sense?
Camera Cannon HFM 41 settings used are AVCHD  1440 x 1080 60i,  I have set the PE10 project settings at HD 1080i 30 (60).  After editing about 15 minutes of video, still pictures(which have been resized), with transitions, titles, etc.  PE10 seems to be doing the editing fine.
When taking through the Share process to DVD the quality is poor.
Steve has a work around in his book where I take the project  to a computer file and save it.  The setting is under the MPEG option and is : MPEG2  1440 X 1080i30.   This file looks good on the computer screen.
From here I take the file through "ANY Video Converter" to an AVI file.   I take this file and put it into a new PE10 project with DV settings of 720 x 480.   When I render this to a DVD the quality is OK, almost as good as other projects I have done starting with standard definition cameras.    Still a little disappointed that even the stills are quite as good.
This seems like a lot of work but I have tried dozens of different ways and the quality comes out very poor.   I have considered taking the files from the camera and converting to AVI before editing but then I can' t make a BR disc.
Is there a better way to take AVCHD to DVD and BR from one project?
There seems to be lots of opinions on which converters are the best, not sure if I selected the best one.

You should be shooting at 1920x10801 for Blue Ray otherwise you will get an unexpected loss of quality in trying to make your final BD.
1440 doesn't correspond to any horizontal TV size (usually 680,720,1366 or 1920)
The loss occurs because you cant fit in an exact pixel so a sharp video transition gets averaged around a few pixels immediatley halving the apparent resolution.
To see this at it's worst, set your computer adapter card to half the pixel resolution of your computer monitor and try to read fine text compared to when it is exactly the same.
This matching is why true full HD 1920 x 1080 observed on a true 1920x1080 big screen is so dramatically better than all others. (Few TV transmissions are true Full HD)
There is always a loss of some quality converting resolutions that are not an exact multiple of the final result.
You should also be cropping and converting all stills to 16x9 1900x1080 pixels (in Photoshop) before adding to the timeline
Because HD is so much better, HD camera dont need so much "high frequency" boost or sharpening as standard cameras did,
They are relatively soft at the point where the pixels cease in DVDs (about 640)
The HD sharpening (or crispening) is done at a much higher pixe setting setting in HD and this is completely wiped out when you convert to DVD.
The way to compensate is to sharpen the video to be downconverted at the 640 pixel part of the spectrum before converting which is what most standard def broadcast cameras always did to make them apparently sharp at that lower resolution (it was all done with mirrors!)
Obviously you only sharpen the file to be made to a DVD, not to the one for BD although you can often make up for a fuzzy original even in a BD!
See the difference only 10% makes?

  • AVCHD-Pro res LT question/

I have recorded footage in AVCHD 1920 X 1080 25fps and I must edit the material andI MUST submit it in Pro Res 1920x1080 HQ.
It seemed to make sense to edit in 1920x1080, so I've used Toast 10 to encode the AVCHD stuff to Pro Res 1920x1080 LT. I noticed however there were two unchecked boxes, one saying "Interlaced" and the other saying "Gamma correction for 4:2:2 source" (I think) Both I left unchecked.
Does anyone see anything wrong with my workflow so far? (Please don't comment on the submission format, I have no choice in this matter)
Should I have checked either of the boxes and/or should I have encoded for editing, to Pro res LT 1440X1080 and then encoded up to 1920 for the final submission?

It works fine with my Panasonic camera. Works fine with a lot of Panasonic cameras I've worked with in classes. Don't know what camera you're using but if it's AVCHD and your computer hardware and software supports it, it should work fine. You do need the folder structure and not just the ,mts files. ClipWrap will transcode it without problem.
HD is upper. Again, I don't know how Toast works, but I think it does a file conversion.

  • FCE 4.0 And AVCHD Importing

I have been using FCE 4.0 for a long time and recently have tried to give Final Cut Pro a shot. As increduous as this sounds I have been told that one cannot insert text at random or titles other than (with respect to the former) what are in the provided templates.  I can't see that as bening anything I should pursue unless it is errorneous informaton.
Note that the Canon R42 is USB with no provision for FW.
OS is OS-X 10.8.4 on a Mac Mini.
Having said that, I have a Canon R42 Camcorder and I was wondering how one imports footage into FCE 4? Prior to that I used a Sony that did not support AVCHD.
Also, are there any compatability issues between FCE 4 and the Canon R42?
    Many thanks!
    Ron

Below are the formats the camera shoots and most won't work directly with FCE.
This one should:  1920 x 1080i / 60 fps (24Mbps) Make sure the corresponding  FCE Easy Setup is selected before starting a new Project.
FCE works only with interlaced with AVCHD 1920 x 1080.
BTW: I've used FCP X since it's release and titles are no problem. Most users are trying to work the same as legacy FCE/Pro and that's where they come to greif.
You can always ask for details on that forum.

  • Premiere pro cs6 won't load AVCHD video files

why won't premiere pro cs6 load video files?
Premiere pro application loads but won't load HD video files.

What codec packs do you have loaded?  With a straight installation I have had any problems loading my Sony AVCHD 1920 x 1080 files in any version of Premiere.  What is your source of your media?

Every time I try to import any files from my camcorder I get a fatal error saying it can't import anything with an error code C0000005 at address 0.  This is just the trial version as I'm trying to see if it will do what I want and so far I can't get it to so anything.  PC is a Core I5 with 4gb ram and 200gb free drive space on Windows 7 64Bit.  I don't like the Sony software so I was hoping this would do it.  thanks for any ideas.

This is what I want you to try. I am assuming that you are in a NTSC area. Correct the following for PAL area if necessary.
Copy your AVCHD Full 1920 x 1080i (I am assuming recorded at 30 frames per second or designated 60 fields per second) with its 5.1 channel sound to your computer hard drive.
As you open Premiere Elements, set the project preset (new project dialog) = NTSC AVCHD Full HD 1080i30 5.1 channel.
Using Premiere Elements' Get Media/Files and Folders, bring the video from the saved hard drive location into the Premiere Elements Media/Timeline.
If you are not 100% sure of the quality in the Edit Mode Monitor, you could:
    a. try right clicking the video on the Timeline, selecting Field Options from the pop up list, and then see if checking Reverse Field Dominance improves the quality of what you are seeing in the Monitor....I suggest that because I think that you probably recording to a memory stick.
    b. render the Timeline by pressing the Enter key of the computer main keyboard to get the best possible preview of the end product
Assuming that is a "go" and after completing your edits, head over to Create Menus. Do that. But, remember, because you have selected a HD project preset, the only DVD menu templates that will be available to you will be HD ones (and you are heading for a DVD-VIDEO widescreen). But, continue nonetheless. Let us see what it will look like.
After Create Menus, preview the menu buttons and the video there. If OK, continue to Share/Disc/Disc and burn to disc (do not get tempted into burn to folder or fall into ImgBurn just yet). In the burn dialog, set the preset for NTSC_Widescreen Dolby DVD that will give you DVD-VIDEO widescreen 16:9. In that same burn dialog, make sure that you have a check mark next to Fit Content to Available Space. When you have your DVD disc in the DVD burner tray, you will see a Quality area in the burn dialog. It will display values for Space Required and Bitrate. If the Bitrate is less than 8, the quality may be impacted because the program is having a problem fitting your content in the space required.  But, keep moving forward and hit Burn.
Next, play that back on your TV DVD player and see what that looks like. I have gotten some pretty great results taking a AVCHD 1920 x 1080 to DVD-VIDEO 720 x 480 Widescreen playback on TV DVD Player. More details on that later. By the way, Premiere Elements does not offer Dolby Digital 5.1 channel sound for the export, just Dolby Digital Stereo. No Dolby Digital 5.1 channel sound even for BluRay.
I will be watching to see how you do.

  • PP CS5 Wants to Render all my AVCHD (MTS Files) - RED RENDER BAR

    Help Please,
    I have a Panasonic AF100 and shooting in 1920 x 1080 25P (Australia)
When I create a new project with same settings (AVCHD, 1920 x 1080 25 Frames Per Second) and import footage (MTS Files) the entire sequence has a RED bar above each clip.  I expected the footage to have Green or Yellow bars unless I apply an effect or transition??
Having to render EVERY clip in my sequence is driving me mad, I have not even applied any effects and just to watch, I need to render every clip..
    I am using a Mac 27", 3.2 GHZ, Intel Core i3, 4GB Memory 1333 Mhz DDR3...

  • Sony HX5V camera that shoots in either MPEG4 or AVCHD MTS2.

I have the above camera which i want to make DVD's for TV watching but i am unsure which format to use i.e. AVCHD mts2 or MPEG4 the latter i am told imports directly into iMovie which i want to use and then iDVD. Please can you advise which to use and what i need before importing into iMovie, i have skysoft video convertor ? will this work or do i need something or should i just shoot in MPEG4 then iDVD to make it playable on TV

With this camera, it is supported by both iMovie 11 and even iMovie 09, so there is no need to do any conversion before importing, no matter which mode you shoot.
In general, I would recommend that you use the AVCHD 1920x1080 if your concern is getting the highest quality and editing a movie.
If your concern is not the highest quality, but getting something on a DVD or the internet quickly and with minimal editing, I would choose one of the MP4 settings.
When you make a DVD, everything will be converted to 640x480 anyway, because all DVDs are standard definition, but you may want to post some HD online or watch on your computer or Apple TV.
You can always convert a high quality movie to a lower resolution, but you cannot convert a low quality movie to a higher resolution later, so my bias is to always shoot at the highest qualtity.
More from a quick google search:
The Sony HX5V has five movie modes. For the highest quality, it offers AVCHD recording at 1920 x 1080 and 60 fields per second. There is also a 1440 x 1080 AVCHD mode which may sound like a 4:3 aspect ratio, but is actually a subsampled 16:9 mode. AVCHD captures more detail and records smoother movement while minimizing file size.
    But you can also record  video in MP4 mode at 1440 x 1080, 1280 x 720 or 640 x 480, all at 30 fps.

Could you include in your follow up with SG some clarification on the details that you have been presenting.
You say that your camcorder is the Sony HDRP J260V. From what I have read that shoots
    AVCHD 1920 x 1080
    AVCHD 1440 x 1080
    MPEG2 720 x 480
Just what is your camcorder set at? I ask this since you keep mentioning MPEG2 which would mean that you are dealing with 720 x 480. Yet your project settings are 1440 x 1080 according to your post.
The project preset should match the properties of your source media so that is why I bring up this important point which SG's questions have been targeted.

  • No 1080/50P support.. WHY?!

As good as FCPX is, why after over a year since release can it still not support 1080/50P?

I can confirm that FCP X 10.0.5 and some earlier versions can import 1080/50p from my Panasonic SD800 perfectly.
HOWEVER, there is one proviso  .  .  .  you must not mix normal AVCHD footage with 1080/50p on the same card.
1080/50p must be the only footage on that card.
