Backup regime

I am looking to introduce a 9ias portal backup routine and have found info on running a portle import/export procedure. It recommends exporting in the following order
1. Login Server 2. Security 3. Database Schema 4. Application 5. Content Area 6.Pages
Is this the best way of backing up nightly? Is there anything else I should be considering ie an Oracle DB backup , file areas to backup etc??
Thanks

Invidual object level backup's can be performed the way you mentioned. In addition it is always a good idea to perform a full portal level backup - we are working on a whitepaper that will detail this (it will be posted on technet once we have finalized the document). If you need info on this one, send me an email and I will have a draft of the document sent to you.
Also, in addition to full portal level (User Schema) you can also think of backing up the entire database (this is especially useful when there are many application schemas that are on the same instance referenced by Portal Applications).

  • Library Backups?

    billincolo wrote:
what is a serious backup method?
    Splitting this from another thread...
Your method of backup (in this case iPhoto libraries) depends on many factors, such as the kind of Mac you have, the number of images you take, the size of images you take, the amount you have to spend, etc, etc. Let's not forget, your own personal preferences.
There is no simply answer for how you should backup because of these many variables.
I only warn that there is a rising mind set that Timemachine is THE answer, but in many cases, it's the only answer. TM is a great way to do daily backups to another internal or external HD. But if this is your only form of backup, then you are setting yourself up for trouble.
There is plenty of good reading on this subject, but basically any good regime should consist of at least three copies. It should also span several types of media (one copy on HD, one copy on optical disc, and possibly a cloud version. There should always be at least one copy kept off site.
To the casual iPhoto user, this may sound like overkill, and if it does, then so be it, keep doing what you do. But if you truly value your photos and have ever gone through a real disaster, you'll understand what I'm saying. Things such as being burglarized, a lightening strike, a house fire, a hurricane, an earthquake, etc, will pretty much laugh at your Timemachine backup to your external HD.... but unfortunately these kinds of things happen hundreds of times a day, every day.
A very general description of a good backup regime should consist of a daily backup via TM to at least one external HD. Depending on your volume of work, maybe a weekly backup to another HD, or a burn to another form of media such as dvd, bluray, DAT tape, cloud, etc. And finally a copy should be kept off site at all times. Again, depending on the regularity and volume of images, this offsite version could be updated weekly, monthly, or bi-monthly. When trying to determine this frequency, ask yourself, if your home or office is hit with a true disaster, how much data are you willing to loose?.... a week's worth, a month's worth? Also, what is your definition of off site? Will keeping a copy at a family member's house across down good enough? While it would be good enough against a house fire or burglary, would it be safe if there is a hurricane or earthquake in your area?
Myself, I feel my personal system has worked well for me up to now, but I'm in transition to higher volume and would very much consider a better system/idea if I hear it.
Without going into a lot of detail, my original library is on one internal HD, and is backed-up to another internal HD in the same computer. It is also kept on another computer, as well as being burned periodically to multiple copies of DVD or BluRay optical disc. Copies of these discs are kept approximately 70 miles away at a family member's house. I am considering a cloud method, but still have my eyes open for a better solution.
To a certain degree, I try to keep separate libraries for separate topics. This allows me to "close" a library occasionally to keep it's size limited for easy backup. (For example, my son plays rugby and I shoot all his games. At the end of each year, that library is closed and a new "rugby library" is opened for the new year, etc.)
As you see there is a lot to think about and no "one easy answer".
I would hope this starts people thinking about developing a good regime and if you feel you already have a good system, please share it with all so others can possibly benefit.

    Backing Up
My Library lives on my iMac.It’s Backed up to two external hard disks every day.
These disks are permanently attached to the iMac. These back ups run automatically. One is done by Time Machine, one is a bootable back up done by SuperDuper
It’s also backed up to a portable hard disk when ever new photos are added. This hard disk lives in my car. For security, this disk is password protected. For this job I use DejaVu because it makes a simple back up that is clear and can be tested easily without doing an full restore.
I have a second off-site back up at a relative’s house across town. That’s updated every 3 or 4 months.
My Photos are backed up online. Personally I use SmugMug but there are many options including flickr. However, check the terms of your account carefully. While most sites have free uploading, you will often find that these uploads are limited in terms of the file size, or the bandwidth you can use per month. For access that allows you to upload full size pics with no restrictions you will need to pay.
Every couple of months I test the back ups to make sure they are working correctly. It’s very easy to mis-configure a back up application, and the only way to protect against that is to do a restore.

  • If I reinstall Itunes will it delete all of my playlists, genres, etc?

    Help,
First time IPod owner who loaded 1,800 songs most of which had bad info (ie: wrong genre, artist showing as title, etc.) I've spent hours making changes in ITunes trying to get them right. I am having troubles connecting my IPod to ITunes and the online support says I need to reinstall ITunes. I looked back at the "music" folder where the files are stored and none of the changes that I made in ITunes show there. So again I ask:
If I reinstall Itunes will it delete all of my playlists, genres, etc?

under normal circumstance, it won't touch them. i've done at least 8 upgrades without losing any genres, playlists or song information.
but, it's best to insure against disaster and back up your music files and library files prior to an upgrade. (actually, it's best to have a regular backup regime even if you aren't planning on upgrading.) this Buegie post is a good resource on those matters:

  • Using Time Capsule as Hard Drive for Videos

This is likely a simple issue but I want to ensure that I do this properly. My internal hard drive is near capacity. I store a lot of media on my internal hard drive such as photos, music and video. I would like to move the video files (both edited and unedited) to my Time Capsule to free up space on my internal hard drive and continue to store and access/edit the photos on my internal hard drive. I would like to continue to use iMovie and other software to edit the videos which will be moved to Time Capsule. I tried to drag and drop the movie files from my hard drive to the Time Capsule Data folder but it started simply making a copy of the movie files rather than moving them entirely. I want to make sure that iMovie will "find" these files when I open the application.
I did something similar with my music library. While I have issues such as iTunes not finding the music (even though I changed the location of the music directory within iTunes preferences, iTunes still shows a circle with an ! in it for a good portion of my music which is frustrating bt that s a topic for another day), I want to make sure that I do this propoerly as these videos are special family videos that I have spent a good deal of time ediing.
Oh and one other thing, I am about to transfer a lot of new unedited video taken over the holidays and I want to make sure when I download them to my Mac, that the new video is saved directly to the new Time Capsule video folders.
Thanks for the help in advance!

I am not saying you cannot use it.. I am saying it is far from ideal.
If your TC dies. as they do .. and take it to apple, they will then change the story to say that it is a backup device.. there are no parts available for the TC, no service, no repairs.. it will be replaced in warranty. Wave goodbye to your content.. as they will do nothing to recover it.. if you remove the disk, or tamper in any way you will have voided the warranty. No NAS on the market (worth the name) seals in the hard disk.
The hard drive is a WD green.. far from the best hard drive around.. and whilst apple claim server quality.. I think their definition of servers and mine has reached snapping point. They are using MTBF from 15years ago or more.
For things like media, where you are handling large files.. a single green drive, without raid, in a backup device on the network are slow. Set to spin down 1min after file transfer is complete.. is so far from ideal it is ridiculous.
The reality is, Apple simply do not have another product.. a suitable one available.. and with the wide spread change to ssd, people are rapidly discovering their 128 and 256GB drives do not cut it.
I am glad you are at least using some backup regime.. that it isn't built into the TC is IMHO another indication that it isn't what apple are claiming it to be. Indeed even the pathetic attempt at backup they had built into the v5 utility, archive to USB drive.. no increments,, always the whole disk.. extremely slow.. was removed from the v6 utility. You cannot sell a device as a NAS without any way to backup, other than using a third party product.

  • Copy Apple TV files to computer

    Hi there,
I recently had to replace the HD on my MacBook - the machine which is synchronised with my Apple TV. I hadn't backed up for six weeks (I know, I know...). I have made purchases from iTunes in that time and these are all stored nice and safe on my Apple TV. I'd like to find a way to get these files back to my MacBook. I realise that due to DRM issues Apple doesn't officially support this but does anyone know a way? I've found some incredibly geeky and complex websites which use Terminal to hack the Apple TV but they look kinda scary.
    Thanks in advance.

    gregnz wrote:
I'm happy to bust it open. Is the HD in the right format to be read by a Mac?
Yes, though clearly you'll need a USB or firewire caddy for the PATA drive.
I'm not sure if filenames are preserved for synced items though.
The PATA drive has at least 3 partitions I believe, one of which is teh system restore image.
Long story but I do have a backup regime - in fact in four different places. I don't use the ATV as a backup or rely on it for that. It just so happens that, due to some REALLY unfortunate timing, of all the places I have backups/copies of my iTunes library the ATV is the most up to date.
Bad luck. Unfortunately things fail even when you have a strategy for backup, and these days I'm starting to think I'm amassing far too much data and really need to be ruthless about what I need to back up and what I could regenerate easily though often time consuming (eg iTunes imported CDs, if I have the CDs they're effectively my backup, but iTunes purchases need backing up physically).
I've lost the will to backup anything to DVD anymore as it's so time consuming, and even BluRay won't take huge amounts of data, so I'd rather backup to cheap external drives.

  • Project management advice

I'm not experienced when it comes to the best way of organizing a project.
My current project uses footage of about 11 hours and my movie is going to be about 3 hours.
I have it in one project with 19 sequences and plan to output to 3 disks.  I think I have my Project window resources organized pretty well
My question is, is it reasonable to have such a large project in one .prproj?  (I do back up frequently)
    Thanks for any advice.

Your project will work and go along fine...until the exact time that it doesnt.
I would be maintaining a  backup regime that would minimise the damage if that time ever comes ( and it may not)
I think I would manually backup the MASTER PROJECT incrementally  and also manually backup portions of it. eg Finished sections.  (sequences?)
Depends a bit on how you are editing the sequences? eg flipping back and forth or completing a sequence and moving on to next...
What PPRO vers and what platform are you on?

  • Best setup for video production?

Our small company releases a DVD each month to subscribers. I work with tons of mini-dv footage on tons of projects. I need a reliable systematic way to work with so much stuff. Our current set up is this:
POWER MAC G5 with 512 RAM
    JVC MINI-DV DECK
2 EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES: (1) holds all the exported files from FCP and (1) holds all the files associated with that months issue (capture scratch, render files, audio, etc).
INTERNAL HARDRIVE: holds shared files that all issues can use such as music and pictures
Any help would be appreciated to work more efficiently without so much chaos.

A backup regime. Use a pair of network drives and rotate them every day. Make it someone else's responsibility to make sure backup software runs twice a day.
If you lose your internal drive with all of your resources, you're basically out of business.
You want network drives or off-premises drives. A backup that sits next to your computer is fundamentally easy to work but literally worthless.

  • Can anyone help - LR5.3 won't start after only 2 successful days!!

2 days ago installed LR5.3 trial on my new PC bought to run LR and CS6 - Win 7 Pro, Xeon E3-1230, 32gb memory, SSDs etc (the works).
Worked great for 2 days, cataloging a big trip, lots of adjustments made. Yesterday I found LR had unexplained errors and dropped/closed but I was able to restart it and my catalogs opened and allowed further actions, and all was well.
Now today the PC doesn't run LR5.3 from the desktop icons or from the .exe files which I locate via Explorer. I tried repair of LR5.3 from Adobe installer program - no improvement after the repair - and then did a full reinstall from the Adobe installer but again no recognition/operation of LR, either when I click on the desktop icon or go to the .exe files.
My other software (minimal, no conflicts there) works fine from the programs' exe files and my internet browsers are fine.
I now have brand new computer with no LR after two positive days.
    Can anyone help out there?

    Reply to Rikk and Geoff
Thank you. Went to .lrcat in WinExplorer and it opened and brought in all my previews and camera calibrations etc
Now I'll seek to remember whatever the preferences were.
    2 Questions for you
    1. Geoff the big catalog guy - if I decide to use one catalog I imagine it will be simple to import and merge other catalogs into the big catalog (probably 200k images to assemble into the catalog)
    2. For both of you - given the weird location of the prefs, are there any other quirks I need to remember in my backup regime - I already have my lrcat and lrdata (previews) as well as images on another backup pc. anything else I should be offline backingup?

  • Longterm preserving of imovie projects

I would like some advice on the long term preservation of imovie edited family movies.I originally understood that DVDs would last 50 yrs. I now know that that is not so. Is creating a disk image and storing that on a hard disk the best option or is there other advice.

    bjgall35
Libraries, archives and others give much attention to the issue you raise. It might be worth looking around the web to gather their approaches to your issue. To some extent, your approach depends on the size of your digital movie collection, but I think our expectation should be that our digital media holdings will keep growing.
Having your family and personal movies, photos, music and even personal records in digital format is an important start to achieving long-term preservation of your collections . Once digitised, then they are much easier to register with various software programs as well as maintaining quality of the movies, etc.
I will assume that you are working with digital media.
You might think about what is likely to stop you preserving your digital media over a long period of time. Here are two key ones:
    1. The media (ie the storage medium) storing your digital media no longer works
    2. The software that created your digital media, etc doesn’t exist any more
    1. Current storage media are: DV tape, SD, memory stick, hard drive, CD/DVD disks, Blu-ray disks, online storage, etc.
It may be a safe course of action to store your digital media on a number of these media types. But as media type changes, you will need to move your digital media on to the new media whenever you think that the old media will no longer readable or reliable.
Each of these has risks. Hard drives are often suggested, but you will need at least three hard drives – two drives backing up the primary drive – and you will need a rigorous backup regime. You will need larger and larger drives as your digital media collection grows.
Devices such as DVD players may no longer work or be purchaseable. New computers cant read old media - ie floppy disks.
You also need to think about safe storage of whatever storage media is being used. In the case of hard drives, one should be stored off site.
    2. Creation software
The software used to create your digital media changes just as fast. Digital media files may not be read by newer versions of the software.
Again you will need to move your digital media to new creation software whenever you think that the old creation software will no longer useable (for example, new operating system software or switching to another operating system/computer).
You will need to keep your software up-to-date despite the need to preserve your digital media for your old software. Again you will need to transfer your digital media to the new version of your creation software. This particularly applies to software such as Toast that burns large projects across multiple DVD disks - will the latest version of Toast be able to restore old files? How long will iDVD (and similar apps) exist and be supported?
You might have to re-cast your digital media if you move to new creation software – ie from iMovie to Final Cut.
Remember that some creation software (such as iDVD and Photo–to-Movie) can only save links to the source material. So working an application such as iDVD will make it necessary to store as an archive and not just a project or image file.
Keeping your movies as individual files in .dv, Quicktime, etc formats might be more useful than relying on iMovie, iDVD, created digital media. These formats may have a long life than specialised software and so these movies can be re-used in the future to create new digital media but using new software.
In conclusion, ideally you will have to maintain a regime to keep preserving your digital media. A database to record and monitor where you are up to might be necessary.

  • External 'shared' drive (WD MyBookWorld) - IP address has changed and I cannot access it, or delete the old definition and re-enter it. How do I delete or edit the definition of 'Shared' computers/drives?

I have for some time used a WD MyBookWorld external hard drive and 'connected' TimeMachine to it.  This process created two 'Shared' computers visible in Finder.  MyBookWorld and MyBookWorld-Backup.  Time Machine connected to the one called MyBookWorld-Backup.
However, then the MyBookWorld acquired a new IP address (long story, it wasn't static).  Time Machine stopped working - didn't give any useful prompts by the way, noticed by accident that it hadn't backed up for a month.
So, ideally I would just like the definition of MyBookWorld 'shared' computer/drive to be updated with the new IP address.  However, I can't find out how to do this.
    - I can't delete or modify the entries via Finder (or anywhere else) of the 'Shared' computers/drives.
    - I CAN connect to the WD MyBookWorld via Finder/Go/Connect to Server and see the file hierarchy that Windows machines are using in their backups .
    - Time Machine ONLY sees the existing MyBookWorld on MyBookWorld-Backup definition, but this fails to connect - error says that the devices doesn't exist or has an incorrect IP address.
So I'm stuck.  Any one help?  I can't help feeling that I'm missing something obvious.
    Thanks in advance.

Well, I'm not quite sure how the communities work in AppleLand.  I've had no reply from the community or from Apple.  I've not experienced this level of disinterest on any other support site.  Maybe my question was too boring....
As it happens, although I haven't resolved the problem as described, I've got Time Machine working again.  I don't exactly know how, but I updated the firmware on the MyBookWorld to the latest, and stopped using the AirPort wireless and switched to a wired connection.  Time Machine seemed to be able to find the external disk and recommence its backup regime.
If anyone cares to answer my original question that would be great.  Google shows many sites with posts asking similar questions, but without any sensible, correct, user oriented answers.

  • Premiere Pro Quit Unexpectedly and got rid of All of My Edits

I just purchased a membership for the Creative Cloud a few days ago and have been editing my short film on Premiere Pro. I had gotten through all of my sequencing, most of my sound editing, and most of my color grading. Everything was going well. Suddenly, earlier this evening (I had only been editing for a few minutes and had most of my work saved from the previous day), I received an alert that told me an error occurred that would force Premiere Pro to quit, though it would try to restore my work. I figured this wouldn't be an issue since I had only just started editing and most of my work was already saved. However, when I reopened Premiere Pro, another alert popped up telling me that it was trying to restore my work and would therefore have to create a copy of my project, so I agreed to it. When I opened the copy, all my sequencing edits were still there, but all of my color grades and sound edits were no more, as though they had never existed in the first place, and my clips were not sequenced the way they were. Trying to remain calm, I told myself that this was probably just because it was a copy and if I reopened the original file, all would be as it was. However, when I did reopen the original file (the file that had been saved the night before), the same thing happened. My color was not graded, my audio was not edited, and my clips were not sequenced, even though they were when I had saved my project the previous night. I tried opening the autosaved files, but they were all the same. Is there any way to salvage my edits or will I have to accept the loss of days of editing and start anew, other than the sequencing?

Start again and start a manual save backup regime.  Sorry to bring you the bad news.
    Edit
Start thisr egime from here on.

  • Satellite L650-18M - Ghost disk image

I have just bought an L650-18M. I installed and configured my software, loaded Ghost and made an image of the C drive as part of my backup regime. So far so good.
For various reasons I had to restore drive C from this image, but got a 'boot manager missing' message. Fortunately I had made a 64 bit repair disc on another PC so was able to repair and boot it.
The windows repair disc installed the boot directory which, when I looked at what Ghost had 'imaged' was missing - on other windows 7 machines this directory is installed in drive C and contains the boot manager for several countries. I have since restored the Laptop to factory settings and the boot directory is not installed on drive C - it is a hidden OS file normally on other windows 7 machines.
My Question is, how do I make a ghost image which includes the boot manager, so it will restore and boot correctly, as I presume that the directory in question is in the hidden recovery partition.

    Hello Bob
Please dont understand me wrong but your question has nothing to do with Toshiba and if you need some advice you should contact Norton or check their FAQ section.
I mean they have best experience with own product and knowhow how to do this.
I used Ghost in the past but unfortunately I cannot tell you how it works now.
By the way: which Ghost version do you use, 14.0 maybe?

  • Getting non supported commercial app to run on Arch?

    Hi Everyone,
I'm in the process of converting my server from OpenSuse 10.3 to Arch.  The rolling disto is the most significant thing for me as I do a lot of customisation and don't want to lose it between format/install cycles of new release ditros. e.g. Opensuse 10.3->11.0 for instance.
Arch is great and I'm finding it perfect for everything I've done to date but I've hit what might be a showstopper for me.
I use HP's Data Protector express for backup to LTO3 tape.  It installs and runs find under opensuse (as it's supported for Suse Enterprise Server).  With Arch however it fails to install.  I've found that it's all about the kernel version and stdc libs.  It seems to require libstdc++.so.5 and associated libraries.  Arch provides libstdc++.so.6.
What I want to know is if there is any way at all to cludge this software into my Arch system.  I can't off the top of my head think of any way to do it so I thought I'd throw it out to the knowledgeable masses.
Please let me know if there's anything you can think of.  If not my only other option is to move all my backup regime over to Amanda or Bacula which is something I'm hesitant to do.  DPExpress is gui driven and I'd like to keep a gui tool available for simplicity in backup specification and restore and I don't know of any other freeware backup solutions that allow that?  Swapping over will also incur a decent restore/backup cycle as I don't have enough disk to restore everything then back it up again with other software.
    Any ideas are welcomed.
    Cheers,
    Arkay.

    Hi,
    Thanks for the response
Funny you should mention that.  After I posted the above I went hunting and found libstdc++.so.5 on my laptop Arch build.  Then via pacman... DOH!
It's definitely not on my server build so I'll be installing that and re-trying when I get home. Hope that is all that's required.
Why is the most obvious sometimes not obvious at all!
    Cheers,
    Arkay.
