Bar - Lightweight xcb-based bar

A lightweight bar based on XCB (yay).
Provides foreground/background color switching along with text alignment (screw you dzen!), nothing less and nothing more.

  • Is APEX the tool for a lightweight browser based query only front end?

I'm tasked with prototyping a lightweight browser based front end to display consolidated customer information. It needs to be callable from half a dozen disparate and mostly non-Oracle applications, each passing in a customer id parameter. In my mind I've already marked-down the only front-end tool I have experience of - Forms10g as being too resource intensive to be continually started up and closed down (plus the initial potential JVM download to locked-down PC's). That leaves me with a couple of options (as far as I can see) - APEX or ADF Faces. I'm slightly worried about the steep learning curve for a J2EE environment plus the possible compatibility issues with ie 5.5 ( I know, I know ). And finally, my question - I've got a good feeling about it but does APEX seem like a good fit for this sort of task?

It needs to be callable from half a dozen disparate and mostly non-Oracle applications, each passing in a customer id parameter. Chris - They want to be able to hit a button in these other applications and see a browser window pop-up (quickly!), view the customer details (composite picture sourced from a data warehouse) then close the browser window and go back to their app. Needs to be lightweight for speed so APEX seemed a good idea.
Denes - Thanks. I'm thinking that the users will regularly open this browser session from their app then close the APEX window to return - probably time and time again. Did you find that establishing a connection and getting the page up made it slow. Is there something I should concentrate on to make sure that aspect performs?

  • ADF Faces or APEX for a lightweight browser-based front end.

I'm tasked with prototyping a lightweight browser based front end to display consolidated customer information. It needs to be callable from half a dozen disparate and mostly non-Oracle applications. The idea is that each application will have a button that can kick off a browser session to see a data-warehouse sourced view of a customer. Forms10g (where my experience lies) seems too resource heavy for the constant opening/closing of this little application but APEX looks like a good fit with not too steep a learning curve and the guys on the forum thuoght it was well suited. ADF Faces seems to have a steep learning curve given that I don't have any Java experience but a small view-only app like this might be a good place to gain experience useful for more complex apps. My question is whether ADF Faces is a goot fit for this sort of task. If anyone has used ADF Faces and APEX I'd be very grateful for their thoughts.

    Thanks for those pointers Grant.
Just a couple of further questions. As a company we're stuck on Internet Explorer 5.5 for another 18 months or so (>5,000desktops!). Does that exclude ADF Faces as an option given the prune-faced geriatric nature of the browser we're using (we're also on NT4.0 :-) Also, they're likely to be in and out of this screen like a fiddler's elbow and I'm wondering if the start-up effort using ADF Faces is likely to be significantly more resource intensive than an APEX equivalent.
My background is Oracle*Forms (since 2.0) and it would be nice to make a start on a technology that could be used in place of Forms in more complex apps - I just need to be able to justify the likely increased costs to people focused predominantly on this project's costs.

  • Lightweight (terminal based?) address book manager that supports vcard

    Hi folks,
I'm on the look out for what the title says, a lightweight program that will let me manage my address book (that's stored in vcard format). Ideally it would be terminal based, to go with mutt. I'm currently using lbdb to allow mutt to query the vcard file along with other sources.
I looked at abook, but that doesn't seem to support vcard, and rolo, but that just makes you edit the things in a text editor.
    Anyone know of anything?
Alternatively, what awesomely good lightweight address book system do you use?
    Pete.

Thanks for the info Dave. I threw up this package, which includes the vcard patch: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=47770
It imports vcards nicely enough, though would be nice if it used vcard as a backend (i.e. let me edit the vcards).

  • Help design a lightweight FVWM-based desktop

I'm looking to design a new desktop for both of my current machines. Why FVWM you may ask? Well, I'm not sure, I just like FVWM and the way you can customize things. But, I need ideas for the interface. I need this to work well on my desktop (2560x1600 res) and my laptop (1280x800 res) pretty well.
I plan on using FVWM from CVS for some of the newer patches that have been added upstream. Also, not a fan of traditional docks or taskbars.
Also, if anyone could give an argument aginst FVWM, I'm listening.

You should go tiling wm so you can have a Giant irc window and 5 tiny terminals smashed together on the side. more productive:)
edit, on topic, I was making a really light fvwm config that i can use as a base whenever my config gets out of control and i want to start fresh.
i put it here if you want to check it out. http://two.xthost.info/navi/configs/5-1 … droog.html

  • Will Genius bar help?

I continue to have a problem with my MAC Pro tower. The bottom line is that it freezes up after inactivity, and I have to shut it down using the power button. Then I have to use my Snow Leopard disk to run the disk utility to clear up the problem "Invalid Volume Directory Count" (can't do it with the regular disk utility). This has been going on for a while, even deleted, formatted and restored my drive, but it is still happening. I have never done so, but does this sound like something that could be taken care of by the Genius Bar? This is my first MAC, and have always had in house service on my PC's, very convenient. I cannot generate this problem, it has a mind of its own. To use the Genius Bar, I would have to bring my tower to the store (not a lightweight), and, based on the nature of the beast, would probably have to leave it. Everything else seems to working fine (monitor, keyboard, mouse, tablet, etc.) so I am hoping that I would only have to bring in the tower. Has anybody had this experience? Can I call my Apple Store to find out what I would need to bring in, or would they tell me when I make a reservation?
Thank you for any suggestions an/or direction.

Buy Alsoft Disk Warrior and run that from a small partition.
    Clone your system with SuperDuper.
I would learn how to do system maintenance.
Test your RAM. Memtest/Rember and also run the Apple Hardware Test off the OEM DVD.
You may need to start fresh on a newly formatted hard drive. Also any printer, devices and look for anything that isn't compatible with 10.6.x. And don't restore anything until the problem goes away; and, you have cloned your system to another drive or disk image.
Apple Disk First Aid is not as strong or as reliable as Alsoft's.

So I would expect to be able to delete the snapshot from myclone.
Maybe I misunderstand something about how this works or I have the wrong expectations.
I would expect a clone to be something like a copy that is independent of the volume being cloned.

The idea is that when you create a clone, it is lightweight and based on the snapshot. That's what makes it so fast. You're not copying every block in the filesystem. So the snapshot is what ties together the parent filesystem and the clone.
For the clone to be independent, you'd have to copy all the blocks. There's no option to do that within the clone process. So as long as both the parent filesystem and the clone filesystem are around, the snapshot has to exist as well.

  • High Memory Usage and a few other problems

I install Oracle DB 11g R1 into a Window 2003 Server virtual machine (VirtualBox) running on Ubuntu Linux. I did just a "plain jane" install accepting most, if not all, the defaults. When I start the service though, the Mem Usage shoots to @ 400 megs and there are several java.exe's that are also running each with anywhere between 80 and 130 megs. Plus, its seems that they never seem to 'settle'; Oracle.exe and one of the java.exe's are always taking up basically 100% of the processor.
This is just CRUSHING my poor little machine.
Any way to throttle these guys back? I can reinstall if needed. Its not like I've done much with it yet.
    Thanks!

Your 400M seems quite lightweight - probably based on a VM allocation of 1GB. You are starving the poor thing. You possibly missed this section in the Install manual before you did the install (http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B28359_01/install.111/b32006/reqs.htm#i1011417)
The database instance itself wants between 500M and 750M for the SGA for a minimum 'properly functioning' system.
Any user connections will want roughly 30-50M / connection, although that can vary wildly.
Enterprise Manager (DB Console), being Java (JEE) based, will gobble as much as you give it, and then some.
If you want to cut back, turn off the EM DB Console. If you do not want features, you could always perform a separate CUSTOM dbca creation without Java in the database and there are several other features that you could toss. 11g could probably limp along with as little as 350M. (You seem to be in the limping-along arena.)
And yes, the internals to Oracle Database do dictate fairly significant memory, CPU and disk (esp bandwidth) utilization. Your poor machine is being crushed because you have mismatched it to the load.

  • High RAM memory usage compared to other systems

I'm suffering with memory usage problems, only in open 2 tabs of facebook(it's only for example, any 'heavy' page freeze also) in firefox*(for example also, but this occur in chromium also) freeze computer.
I've 1GB of memory, it isn't big but also isn't very little.
I'm using XFCE with compiz (yes, compiz, since use a very lightweight openbox-based session doesn't help, then compiz...) when system start (after login) system is consuming 130MB approximately of RAM.
after 1 hour if close all open apps and see memory usage again consume is something about 350MB, "only solution" is reboot.

other thing, this not occur in Windows XP, I can open more than 10 tabs in firefox, and eclipse open, etc...

  • File Browsing for Freaks (i.e. 'advanced users')

I'm currently searching a simple, lightweight, shell-based file-browser. I'm not searching a file-manager, too much bloat in it. I don't want to manage my files through a file-manager, I prefer to use cp, mv, vi/nano etc..
I just want a file-browser which I can use to browse directories on my system through an ncurses-based interface.
It should just show me the content of a directory and give me a one-line CLI-Prompt at the bottom as the Midnight Commander does, so I can execute my commands (cp, mv, vi/nano etc..) directly from the file-browser
Do you know ncmpc? Or cplay?
I'm searching a file-browser with an interface which resembles the one ncmpc and/or cplay uses.
If you know something like that what I'm searching, drop me a line.

Gilneas wrote:Why not just run an mc-like ls after cd'ing?
    I use this: ls -l -a --color=auto -h -F --group-directories-first

I played around with different tools in the last days and I found out some things which can be useful.
    Possibility 1:
    '~$: ls -l -a --color=auto -h -F --group-directories-first | w3m'
In this case w3m is used as pager for displaying a directory's content.
But one could also use 'more', 'less' or simply '~$: ls -l -a --color=auto -h -F --group-directories-first' without any pager.
    Possibility 2:
    '~$: w3m <path/to/dir>'
By default this gives you a full dual panel view with browse-able ('click-able') directories, content listing and viewing (not editing AFAIK) the content of text files.
You're even able to customize the panel-, format- and sorting-type by simply using 3 selection fields at the top.
I think using w3m as directory pager and file viewer *could* be a compromise between the blank ls and a more powerful file browser.
    Possibility 3:
    '~$: lynx <path/to/dir>'
More powerful than w3m with (at least) the same customization possibilities.
Additionally you can specify a default editor (e.g. Vi, Nano etc.) in the lynx config, after this you're able to select a text file and [ENTER] to open your preferred editor and view/modify the selected file. Modify it, save, quit the editor and continue browsing your system with lynx. Lynx' capabilities go even further: You can create, modify (move/rename) and delete directories.
    Amazing, don't you think?
Unix and its abilities to combine different tools for a specific task never ceases to amaze me.

  • Kaffeine embedded crash fixed when compiled with libxcb support?

    From kaffeine website:
    Embedded Kaffeine crash fixed.
This long standing bug is now fixed in current svn ...
In order to make it possible, we have ported Kaffeine and xine to xcb (a thread-safe replacement for xlib).
You can give it a try right now:
    1) install libxcb=>1.0
    2) install current xine-lib cvs (it contains xcb based video output plugins: xshm and xv)
    2) install current Kaffeine svn
    Notes
    a) Both xine-lib and Kaffeine have to be compiled with xcb support (autodetected, check configure results).
    b) Kaffeine will still work with xlib based video out plugins if compiled without xcb (but then, no fix!)
    From 0.8.4 changelog:
    * xine-part: support for xcb. Requires libxcb 1.0 and xine-lib 1.1.5. Fixes several issues.
Any reason not to incorporate this? If it lives up to it's promises It could mean kde users only need ONE media player :-)  (I have 2 installed just to get DVD menus and embedding in konqueror without crashing)
    Any thoughts?
    Cheers,
    Steve.

I felt that the laptop was possibly overheating and that is why I started down the road to call "customer support", thinking that a fan went out or there was damage to hardware due to it over heating.  And that road got me no where in a fast manner, and two "techs" telling me it was a software related issue and that I needed to reformat the laptop (twice) and re-install to factory settings.  Even when I did this, it still had the issue and they again told me that it was software related when there was no software on the computer except for Windows 7.  The only thing that customer support helped me with is the knowledge of next time I buy a laptop, but Dell or any other laptop besides a Toshiba.  That is too bad.
Anyway, I tried to continue on with my thinking of a possible over heating issue, so I blew air into the vents and fins of the laptop.  A lot of dust came out.  I kept blowing air into the vents until no more dust came.
My wife had to re-install everything again to her laptop after I got the major items re-installed.  She has been running it for the last day or so with no issues.  We hope that this was the issue.  I know she enjoys the laptop when it was running well.
I guess we will see how it goes.

    Hi there,
I'm running a lightweight system based on Openbox, tint2, PCManFM, and I use tilda as terminal emulator.
I really love to have it on top of my wallpaper, but I also have an Openbox keybind which shows my desktop (minimize all opened applications) and I would like to exclude tilda from that fonction, in order to have it everytime on top on my wallpaper, like conky does with the option "fork to background".
Could you help me with that, guys ?
Hey also, I would like tilda to capture the keys pressed when I'm my on my desktop. Actually, now, I have to click on the portion of the screen reserved to tilda, and then enter whatever command I want to type in my term.
    Thanks ;]

I actually found out that clicking to the blue arrow will do that (untag the message from staying on top).

The IronPort Web Security appliance secures your data by providing the following
    capabilities:
    • IronPort Data Security Filters. The IronPort Data Security Filters on the Web Security
appliance evaluate data leaving the network over HTTP, HTTPS, and FTP to control what
data goes where and how and by whom.
    • Third party data loss prevention (DLP) integration. The Web Security appliance integrates
with leading third party content-aware DLP systems that identify and protect sensitive
data. The Web Proxy uses the Internet Content Adaptation Protocol (ICAP) which is a
lightweight HTTP based protocol that allows proxy servers to offload content scanning to
external systems. By offloading the content scanning to dedicated external systems, the
Web Proxy can take advantage of the deep content scanning in other products while
being free to perform other Web Proxy functions with minimal performance impact.
