Best Layout for Simple Project

hey,
Im doing a simple ticket application with 6 -7 panels. Im new to java and currently using flowlayout but it looks very messy. I tried Gridlayout but my controls turned out oversized.
Can anybody recommend a simple layout that can be used to create a neat interface.
thanks
tom

Can anybody recommend a simple layout that can be used to create a neat interface.We don't know what you consider "neat", so no we can't recommend a simple layout.
The key point to remember is that you should be using a combination of different layout managers to get the "neat interface" that you desire.

  • Best Layout for Simple forms

    I am sick of having to do all of these workarounds for create simple forms using the Swing API. What is the easiest and most effective way to create a simple form ? And whats Layouts should I use. Below is an example of what the form would look like.
    Name{Label}: {TextField}
    Address:{Label} {TextField}
    etc.. etc..
    all aligned. What is the best solution for this type of typical form. Currently I'm trying to utilize the BoxLayout nested but its very difficult to align the labels and the text fields or likewise the text fields etc.. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    ParagraphLayout. it was designed exactly for this type of thisng
    label1 : textfield1
    label2:  textarea in scrollpane
               :  // text area occupies severals column (based on te preferred height)
    label3:  textfield2
               :  textfield3
    label4:  combobox1 gap label5: combobox2
    // the code to generate th edata entry form abouve using ParagraphLayout
    JPanel p = new JPanel(new ParapgraphLayout());
    p.add(label1, ParagraphLayout.NEW_PARAGRAPH);
    p.add(textfield1);
    p.add(label2, ParagraphLayout.NEW_PARAGRAPH);
    p.add(textareaScrollpanel1);
    p.add(label3, ParagraphLayout.NEW_PARAGRAPH);
    p.add(textfield2);
    p.add(textfield3, ParagraphLayout.NEW_LINE);
    p.add(label4, ParagraphLayout.NEW_PARAGRAPH);
    p.add(combobox1);
    p.add(Box.createHorizontalStrut(10));  // 10  pixel gap
    p.add(label5);
    p.add(Box.createHorizontalStrut(10));  // 10  pixel gap
    p.add(combobox2); you can get the Paragraph layout at: http://www.jhlabs.com/java/layout/
    they also have other nice layout (like GridLayoutPlus - similiar to GridLayout, but allows different row and column size)

  • Best practice for responsive projects

    Does anyone have tips on best practices for responsive project?
    I understand that 3 different layouts can be created. What happens if a learner is not using one of the 3 devices that were set up in a responsive project, and their screen size is different from any of those

    Jay,
    Dr. Pooja Jaisingh offered very valuable tips for good practice in responsive design last week in her webinar. 'Do's and Don'ts of creating Responsive Projects with Captivate 8'. I don't see the recording yet On Demand, but keep an eye on it.
    Did you test a responsive project with F11 (Preview in Browser)? You will be able to change the resolution of the browser window and see that the content, if well designed (you can have absolute positioning, size as well) will move, shrink to adapt. The break points (3 devices) allow you to make more invasive changes at those points: dragging some objects out of the stage in the scratch area because they take up too much space for phones is one example. Or replacing a big screenshot with many details by a zoomed in detail screenshot for the mobile breakpoint. That is my way of explaining, responsive is not just have the three layouts for devices, it is also adapting between those breakpoints.

  • Is an iPhone app the best choice for our project?

    Dear All,
    We are developing a travel tour idea for different locations within the US.  Tour content can include video, audio, images and text, as well as maps and locations.  We want to make our tours "in-depth" so that people can spend good quality time traveling a short distance and exploring "in-depth" rather than travelling long distances and giving only casual interest to what they see.
    I'm new to developing apps for the iPhone and am using Dreamweaver CS5.5 soon to be updated to CS6.
    I'm wondering if an app for iPhone and other related media like Android is really the way to go because of the limited content and screen size available.  I can envision our tours being utilized in many other formats, including iPad, Interactive PDF, as travel e-books or through an interactive website.  Our goal is to sell our apps, not give our material away for free. PDF would be my preferred format, but I know that PDF is easily transferred for free among users and would probably not give us much profit.
    Any thoughts out there on what the best format for our project might be, or should it include ALL of the above formats? App creation for the iPhone is a rather complicated process, so that's why I'm wondering if after all of the work that you have to put in to create an iPhone app, if that is ultimately my best choice.
    I would appreciate any thoughts or advice, or any questions you might have.  I'm working on a Mac Pro with CS5.5 Master Collection soon to be updated to CS6

  • Best Method for transferring projects back and fourth

    Hello. I will soon be purchasing an iMac for home use and would like to get some advice on project transfer. I will be doing a lot of video editing back and fourth between the office and home. What is the best method for doing this? Where can i locate the files to make sure that I have everything and wont be missing anything when I bring it home, etc. Thanks for any advice!
    Brandon

    Use a (Firewire 800 or faster) external HD to keep your media, events and projects on.
    You can then take the drive to work with you and back home. Use FCP X to transfer (or create) the event and projects on this drive and both macs will recognise it.
    The drive must be formatted Mac OS Extended (journaled is not important for video drives).

  • Best settings for DVD project

    I have done all of my work so far for online projects so I didn't realise that dvd always has dimensions of 720x576, and that it is only blueray which plays in full HD, until I started building a DVD project in Encore.
    I would like some advice to produce the best possible results on a dvd format;
    I presume that this means I must build all my menus in photoshop to 720x576 dimensions?
    But what about the video itself? It was filmed in 1920x1080, and was created on a 1920x1080 timeline in Premiere Pro, can I simply export it at as an SD file?
    What I'm asking really is how should I export my project from Premiere, and build it in Encore for best possible results for DVD format?
    Thanks in advance

  • Installer for simple project

    I am having a huge problem building an installer.  To demonstrate I have created a very simple project (see attached zip file).
    It consists of a VI that does very little
    a text file named text.txt which the VI reads and displays
    a folder named tree db with three subfolders.  Each of the subfolders has a text file named leaf
    My goal is to build the project, build an installer and run the installer on a target machine. The result should be that the target machine will have the exe, the text file and the folder tree (as well as the LV runtime, of course).
    I have managed to do this in the past but for some reason I am really floundering. First, if I put the folder in the build I get a name conflict even though I have checked "preserve disk heirarchy and then in the install spec I don't see how to include the tree db folder and the text file.
    I have tried everything I can think of without success.  Can anyone help?
    Regards,
    David

    I'm sorry but I am not in a place where I can look at your code right now. To see a configuration that works, check out the post from my blog that you will find here. At the bottom of the post is the archived project in my SVN repository. In this project I am including a database file, but the process is the same for any non-LV file.
    I first include the non-LV file. I then created a destination for it (in this case called _repos) and then in the source file setting told the builder to put the file in _repos. At this point the preview will show it in the right place.

  • FAQ: Are there best practices for building projects within the 20 page/state limit?

    The 20 page/state limit in Flash Catalyst is there to prevent Catalyst (and your finished application) from running slowly. You can however build efficient applications that have more than 20 states by using custom components. Custom components can contain states as well; so by creating an app that has several states, and using custom components that have states, you can get more unique views of your app while keeping it efficiently built.
    Try this:
    1. Select some of your arwork where you need more states. Right click and choose "Convert to Custom Component"
    2. Double-click to edit the custom component. Note that you can now create states in the custom component. Try creating a few states here.
    3. To exit editing the component, double click a blank area on the artboard.
    4. If you try creating an "On click transition to state" interaction now you will see that you can choose from both the states of the application as well as the states of the custom component.

    Here's an ASCII diagram to illustrate one way of pushing application or top-level pages/states down into a custom component:
    Before:
    State1     State2     State3     State4     State5     State6     State7...
    After (project refactored to push three top-level states down into a custom component):

    For some projects this can be an inconvenient workaround, and for others it can really clean things up by reducing complexity. If you have several top-level pages in your app that are completely different than other pages (for example, they don't share any objects with the other states) than pushing these down into a custom component makes things a lot more manageable in Catalyst. The layers panel, for example, shows all objects across all states-- this is useful when your states share many objects. If however, your states don't share a lot of objects, the layers panel can get a bit unmanageable. Refactoring into a custom component allows you to fix this by grouping content into a container.

  • Best practice for this project?

    Hello,
    Total n00b here, so please bare with me!
    I'm working on one of my first AE projects getting my feet wet as well as following along with some books and Lynda.com training vids, but I thought I'd post here as well.
    The project I'm working on is nothing more than a glorified slideshow. Basically, it consists of a 30 different still images (each image is different). For each still, there is a basic title sequence (fades in/out), then the still fades in, there's a pan/zoom, then fades out, then on to the next one. Total time per still is 30-40 seconds. Finally, there will be a single audio track playing over the full piece. Like I said, pretty simple.
    What I'm wondering is, what's the best way to set this up. Should each still's sequence be it's own composition and then nest each composition within a master composition, should this all be done in a single composition, etc.?
    Basically, I'm curious as to how to best deal with having this all reviewed, having to make changes, etc. For example, once I put the initial piece together, I'll render out a version for review. If I have to make a change to one of the sequences, is there a way to deal with this so I don't have to spend the time rendering the entire job out again, just for a short 1 second change to 1 sequence within the entire job? What's the best way to deal with this?
    I'd love to hear what suggestions people may have!?
    Thanks!
    Kristin.

    My personal approach would be just one comp, one text layer, and one black solid layer under the text and on top of the images to control the fading (I got the impression you want to go blank, rather than transition directly from one image to another).
    Create a new solid, set it to your BG color, and make it "comp size".
    Use the text tool and type your first title.
    Select them both and use the align window to center your text horz and vert (actually your centering it to the solid, which happens to be the size of your comp)
    Set up opacity fades on your title, and BG solid to reveal the 1st image, and set it up to pan and scan, then fade the BG solid back up.
    Now go to where you want to fade up the next title, and open the text properties until you see Source Text, and enable keyframing.
    Drag the new created square "hold" keyframe to the begining of time, then select all the text and change it to your 2nd title.
    Then copy and paste your fade keyframes, tweak as needed, and repeat...
    I prefer this approach as it keeps everything in one comp where you can see it (handy for syncing to your music layer), and you dont have a bunch of duplicate title layers that are essentially the same thing.
    As for needing to change just a small part of it, depends on your finally delivery format. If you are giving them one long file, and just need to change a small part in the middle, make the change, then import your last rendered animation (best way to import is to drag the file from an OS browser window to the AE project window).
    Bring the old anim into your comp as the top layer, so AE doesnt have think much about constructing each frame, then go to the beginning of the part you have changed, and with this cover layer selected "ctrl shift D" to split the layer. Then move to the end of your fixed portion and with the 2nd half of you cover layer selected, "alt [" which will jump the beginning of the cover to there, so AE only has to deeply contemplate the frames that you have changed. Although with this project it shouldnt take long to render any how.
    Well, thats my two cents, or more like a buck thirty five.

  • Best Option for Simple Animations?

    I create cartoons in Illustrator 8.0. I want to move into
    animating simple cartoons i will draw myself. They will range from
    5 seconds to a few minutes. All will have audio.
    I don't want to buy more than i need. What is the minimum
    software program that i need, and what could i use that may cost a
    little more but would be worth it in the long run?
    Thank you so much for your opinion.

    Depends on your style and your training as an animator, and
    what your project goals are: straight animation? interactivity?
    e-cards? Traditional animators used to drawing frame-by-frame with
    exposure sheets will feel more comfortable with Toon Boom Studio
    (www.toonboom.com). It has far superior drawing tools and color
    pallette management and timeline management than Flash. But if
    you're used to Illustrator, that may make no difference to you. It
    appears that the upcoming Flash CS4 will narrow the gap, as the
    interface appears to include enhancements that will be more
    familiar to traditional animators, not to mention IK, which Toon
    Boom Studio doesn't have (the highly expensive Toon Boom Solo does
    have it).
    That said, I think Flash is a great program for creating
    cartoon animation. You may not think you're interested in
    ActionScript programming at this point. I use Flash mainly for
    cartoon animation and I resisted ActionScript for a few years. But
    once you get used to Flash as an animation tool, and then decide to
    dip your little toe into ActionScript, you'll find out what an
    astounding tool it is, even for traditional animation, enabling you
    to do things impossible in more traditional-oriented programs. Plus
    now Flash and Illustrator are fairly well integrated, so you'll be
    able to import and export between the two.
    On balance, I'd go for Flash.

  • What is best format for simple text animation in iWeb?

    I want to use a simple text animation "movie" in my site using iWeb.  I don't want the controller visible -- and I want the animation to play automatically.  I went to Inspector and checked for it to start automatically, but no effect.  I still have to manually click on it.  The mov file plays fine, but not automatically.
    Second question:  is mov the best file format for what I'm tryin to do?  I admit to getting lost with all these formats/codecs.
    Thanks.

    Its not so much the movie format that matters as the way in which you decide to play it on your page.
    Dragging a movie file onto the iWeb page requires that the visitor has the QuickTime plugin - which a lot of people don't. Flash is not the answer anymore due the fact that iOS devices don't support it unless you provide fallback to HTML5.

  • Need an Xcelsius developer for simple project with revenue potential!

    Hi,
    Me and my partner own a small business (very small) with a few financial literacy offerings that use Xcelsius. My problem is that the person who was building our simple Xcelsius applications has left. We are looking for an Xcelsius developer to do some side-line development for us. It's primarily related to modifying the existing business objects.
    Our products are very innovative. You can see examples of our tools here:
    http://www.theriseenterprise.com/index.php?q=taxonomy/term/10/10
    Of course you are free to explore the entire website. We do not have a lot of money, but we are willing to give the right person a share of the revenues that we receive from the tools that they build/modify. Again, for an Xcelsius pro, this would be a snap. Pretty easy work I would think. All of the source spreadsheets are already built and documented.
    If you have an interest, please call 6174183036.
    Thank you.

    I currently use Cubase LE that came w/ my Firepod to do voice work and radio forecasts and export and convert 50-60 AIF's to MP3 in ITunes every single day. I've saved a simple 1 track template with preset I/O's, Levels and Project length.
