Best Output

I've succesfully created DVD's from standard 720 x 480 DV camcorder and old VHS tapes into DVD's NTSC Dolby Standard 720 x 480 using Share to play on my 1080 HD TV (through PS3 and Sony AV Receiver).  However, would I get better image results if I used Share to create and then burn 720P 30 (1280 x 720) or for that matter 1080i (1440 x 1080) Blu-ray.  I realize I'm starting with 720 x 480 video, but would the latter process create a better final image on the HDTV?  There seem to be a lot more data that would be burned.  I'm using Premiere 4 which I think is a pretty amazing program rather than 8 but I assume the version shouldn't effect the answer.  Tks.

Like Steve says, the interpolation algorithms are specifically designed for one purpose. An NLE, like PrE, has to do so very much more.
It is not unlike why one gets higher quality, when they resize a large still image in PS, using it algorithms for Scaling, than when they let PrE (or PrPro) do it. PS is an image editing program and excels at that. PrE/PrPro are NLE's and have to do everything.
Now, there are several multi-thousand $ cards, that can re-sample for you, though I do not know of any of these that work with PrE. Most are totally in the realm of major feature productions.
PrPro CS5 might have some extra power, with certain Transcoding tasks, with some new video cards. Right now, those appear to be in the US$2K range, but more, lower-priced units are being hinted at. Right now, Adobe will have CUDA with a plug-in and the nVidia CX card, if you need to Export to H.264.
Hope that this helps,

  • What are best output options in DVDSP for playback on VGA Computer Screen?

I understand that DVDs were designed to be viewed on TV sets - not computer monitors with much higher resolution than a TV set.
However .... I'm curious what the best output options are within DVDSP3 for playback on a standard 19" VGA computer screen 1024x768 and not necessarily on a TV screen. Any ideas?
Will DVDSP3 address playback on a standard VGA computer screen any better than iDVD6? .... or are they both very much the same?
    Here's my objective:
MiniDV>FCP HD >DVD SP3>DVD-R / Playback on VGA 19" Monitor only (no TV involved).
    or...
MiniDV>iMovie6>iDVD6>DVD-R / Playback on VGA 19" Monitor only.
    TIA

George - I'm not a web designer, so I'm probably not the best person to respond but here goes anyway (FWIW):
(anywhere from 10sec to 2min) for website visitors to play (but not download). There can be multiple audios per web page.
No problem. QuickTime. X-platform and you can set whether it's downloadable or not - but that's really moot, as anything on the web can be captured, especially with the 'analog loophole' such as WireTap or Audio Hi Jack.
I need a combination of buttons from very simple round (or square 20x20 pix) to a bar style with volume control, both with the option to change the color to fit my site.
Buttons are your business - nothing to do with playback functionality. They are usually just a link to a file - your site should be set up to play anything, by anything, that's clicked on… Flash, QT whatever
a player that runs from my site and not somebody else's.
So you're hosting? I'd hate to go down that path… what if your site takes off? What if it goes down? You'd never handle the bandwidth. IMO better to buy inexpensive (but competent) hosting for $10 or so per month and avoid the headaches, and expand the hosting service as and when required.
    See here for example:
    http://soundpropaganda.com/blog/loudness.html
I have QT files, not downloadable (well, supposedly) from text links (check the green "Here's" links). The link method (graphic, text, whatever) is your design, not part of the playback system.

  • Best output for DVD

What's the best output method for publishing onto a DVD that
users can access? I would also like to be able to have the users

    HI,
Theres a million and one SWF to AVI converters out there
(Sothinkmedia *dot* com) is one of them. That will also allow you
to attach a playback bar, or, just use the one in your media

  • The best output device for iPod?

    Hallo Everybody,
Somedays ago I have seen an heard the T+A Caruso(http://www.taelektroakustik.de/deu/ta2/caruso/caruso.htm). This was it! Yes! Internetradio, CD and iPod in a perfect Combination of Sound! - and then the cold shower - 1700 Euro not $!
Who know a ultimative solution under this price?
DENON S52 is it not! no sound calibration!

You can connect an iPod to any sound system. So the best "output device for iPod" is the same as the +best output device, period.+
I'm told you get better sound (for the purpose of feeding into a sound system) if you connect the audio output through the docking connector, instead of from the headphone jack. You get +line level audio out+ like with other audio system components.
You can do so if you have a Docking Station device with a stereo jack, or if you get a cable like this one.

  • Best Output Format for Slide Show?

If I were to purchase Final Cut Studio...
What would be the best output format to use for a simple slideshow intended for Web deployment? In other words, which encoding method will provide the best compromise between file size and video quality? The slideshow is a series of simple static images with some fade transitions and Ken Burns effects. There is also a soundtrack for background music.
A 1.5 minute slideshow with soundtrack created using Adobe Flash is less than 2 MB in size (which is great for Web deployment), and it looks very good. If that same slideshow is exported from Flash to a QuickTime-compatible format, it balloons to over 20 MB!
So what I'd really like to know is, if something like Final Cut Pro were used to create that same slideshow, would I be able to produce a web-ready video that rivals the Flash version in size?
Thanks for any help and insight you can provide,
    -Steve

Quicktime is a file wrapper that can contain anyone of a number of codecs.
    Yes, I understand that.
H.264 is the prefered version for web/apple TV delivery.
A 90s slideshow that was less than 2 MB as a SWF file became a 27 MB behemoth when exported using the H.264 codec. The exported file had the same frame rate and resolution (pixel dimensions) as the original Flash file. The audio was optimized as well. Why the dramatic difference? (I think I know why, but perhaps I'm missing something.)
That being said, Final Cut Pro is a video editing program and is a waste of money if all you are doing is simple slideshows.
Slideshows are not all I will be doing, but I will be doing them occasionally, and it's hard to justify purchasing Flash just to create slideshows that are optimized for the Web.
Have you tried iMovie then converting the output to either Flash or (if you have Quicktime Pro) converting to h.264 QT?
My tests indicate that anything but Flash format results in a monstrous file for a simple slideshow. I have a notion as to why this is, but I wanted to check to make sure that I'm not overlooking some way of creating smaller non-Flash files.
The bottom line is that Final Cut Studio will be far more useful and versatile for what I need to do, and I would be much more proficient with that software; but if I can't output video files that rival those of Flash in terms of quality and file size, then I might have to get a copy of Flash after all.
And yes, you can convert a QuickTime movie to flash, but it's just not the same in terms of file size as generating the same slideshow directly in Flash. I suspect this is because Flash is optimized for animation, whereas the QuickTime codecs are designed for video, and a simple slideshow is more of an animation than a video.
So my real question is (and I suspect the answer is no), is it possible using Final Cut Studio to generate a simple slideshow which rivals the output from Flash in terms of file size for a given resolution?

  • What's The Best Output Setting?

Well, choosing the "best" Export/Share setting for output, is a bit science, a bit art, and often a bit of testing.
File Size rests primarily on Bit-Rate, which roughly is = to "quality," and then the Project's/Sequence's Timeline Duration. It can become a delicate balancing act between quality vs file size. The amount of motion, especially off-axis motion, would be where to look for ultimate qualtiy, established by Bit-Rate. Lower motion footage, will still look good,at a lower Bit-Rate, but only the editor, or the client, can make the final determination.
For some general discussion, see this Adobe FAQ Entry.
Note: the above is focused on Premiere Pro, but most applies directly to PrElements, as well. However, the term for Export is now in PrE's Share Tab, while Export is the term used for either direct output,or output through AME (Adobe Media Encoder).
Hope that helps one determine the best output setting for their material.

  • Panasonic SD700 - Best output??

Im recording video on my Panasonic SD700, which I import into FCE using Log and Transfer.
When I export to Quicktime, the resulting video is either of a poor quality (jagged edges as the camera moves around etc), or the frame rate drops so panning is not smooth.
What are the best output settings, assuming I want to ultimately get my video onto DVD???

Before exporting make sure you have rendered everything.
I often have need to experiment with different settings and see the results quickly on DVD so I keep a few DVD±RWs handy that I can re-use hundreds of times, which saves wasting DVDs.
My tests are usually no more than a minute long, using typical problematic footage eg. action rather than static shots.
These mini-projects take only minutes to prepare plus a few more minutes to burn to DVD.
You can get 10 DVD-RWs for £4.80 delivered to your door from here:-

  • AVCHD footage to DVD in FCP - best output options?

Hi - I've been importing AVCHD files from my Panasonic HDC-SD1 camera into Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 Using the Log and Transfer to get the files in works like a charm, editing them is no prob. However, when I export the files and view them on a large screen, the footage looks pretty low quality, especially when I do any slow-motion moves (it gets stuttered) or when there is a lot of movement onscreen, it just looks BAD.
There are a lot of choices for how to export my film, and I'm clueless as to which is best. Hoping to get some advice on here. Thus far, I've tried exporting it as a QT .mov file, and I've also tried using Compressor, but there are so many output choices and I don't know which will work best.
In terms of "Log and Transfer" import, I've been using AVCHD - Apple Intermediary Codec. I tried switching it to "AVCHD - Pro Res 422" but it won't let me import that way.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated! I'm starting to worry that the "3CCD broadcast footage quality" camera I thought I bought is lower quality than I expected...

I'm starting to worry that the "3CCD broadcast footage quality" camera I thought I bought is lower quality than I expected
The term "broadcast quality" gets thrown around a lot in the marketing business. And while footage from all across the quality spectrum might be broadcast on one network or another (especially the cable networks), the camera you listed is far from what those in the industry would call "broadcast quality." But even more so than that, the format the camera records in is definitely not broadcast quality.

  • Best Output for DVD from FCP???

I'm a newbie and need help. I was outputting from FCP 6.0.4 using Export > QuickTime Movie, then importing that file into DVD Studio Pro. But, a college student who saw it recommended Exporting using Compressor 3.0.3 which I did using the DVD: Best Quality 90 Minutes. I noticed an improvement in my DVD quality, however, in every program I've tried and retried so far I get a little short segment (about a 10 second portion) in my half hour long program that all of the sudden goes crazy with distortion and pixelization and image irratic jumping movements. What can I do to create a totally smooth video when going from FCP to Compressor or is there a better way to finally get it into DVD Studio Pro? I want the highest quality solution as the video footage is originally HD. Thanks for your help, Desperate Russ

    Restart the computer.
    Export using compressor.
Maybe this is mumbo-jumbo, but it works every time for me.
    good luck to you.
The advice is more or less sound but you have several unnecessary steps. Your idea is to consolidate all of the FCP timelines and their associated media into a single timeline; you are nesting the project.
Forcing everything to render is good.
Export the entire project as a self contained movie.
Import the self contained movie into DVDSP.
You would perform these steps with each of the individual movie clips you want to have as menu items in your DVD project. Maybe. You might be able to use one single large movie and set go-tos for each chapter. Whatever.
But there is no reason to restart your computer.
And there may be no good reason to use Compressor to create the MPEG2 files.

  • Can FCP directly output to Beta Cam? if not what is the best output result?

I wonder which way is the best result to output the video to beta tape for TV broadcasting. I used firewire to DV but once the TV station dup to beta, the picture gettin worst.

Thinking of CBD as hockey director...
"I'll take some of that! More of this! And less of those!
"I want them now! I want it yesterday! And stay awake because the requirements will change tomorrow!"
    On a more serious note...
I searched around for a beta sp deck that takes fire wire in and could not find one.
It strikes me that if you (Cantonpro) are already using an iMac you are either sharing the firewire bus, or placing media on your system drive. As noted, neither of these situation are recommended.
However, if you are on the system drive, then an AJA IO might be a possibility, but almost $2000 plus deck rental seems a bit steep, especially since the capabilities of the AJA would be limited by the iMac. Maybe a higher end canopus converter like this one,
    http://www.canopus.com/products/ADVC500/index.php
but you are still talking almost $1500 plus deck rental. This solution is a bit more appropriate if you plan on staying with the iMac.
There are less expensive options that rely on composite video, but then you may as well have the station do the conversion.
Maybe you should contact a local dub house and see what they have to say, or find out if anyone near you has this equipment already.
Or, if your work is generating profit, and your business would benefit from the higher quality on-air, start to upgrade your hardware so you will see greater returns in the future.

  • Best output question

We were given a tvc to put together using clips from a local tv station (DVCPro and DVCam). We put the entire thing together in Motion in a DVPAL Anamorphic project, with tons of FX plug-in effects (blooms, light rays, glass brick diffusions, etc.) that won't render out in FCP. Now that it's built we need to output to Beta. So not sure what to do at this point because we don't have a Beta deck. I'm guessing that we should export it out of Motion in either Apple animation codec or in 10-bit uncompressed and then take it into a 10-bit uncompressed FCP sequence, export that as a Quicktime and deliver that to a post house to output onto Beta. But not sure if that's going to give us the best quality - which we desperately need because this is going out on tv and is going to be playing on the facades of a couple skyscrapers.
    G5 2.5 Ghz   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Hey Thrillcat - it's a PAL project. And what's strange is that Motion gives you NTSC SD and NTSC DV as separate options, but when it comes to PAL there's only PAL DV-Broadcast SD (which is what I'm working in). The frame rate isn't a problem, it's 25 fps throughout. So I assume I output it via Compressor as 8-Bit uncompressed PAL? Or am I missing something here?
Michael - we'll definitely talk to the post people before we lay it onto Beta. And your advice is well heeded. Shanghai's a seriously tricky town when it comes to post. Most places are just a couple kids running a pirate version of Adobe Premier. There are a couple FCP shops, but they're expensive (especially when they find out you're a foreigner).

  • Best output for MOS Super 8 telecined project

I've finished my project (with the generous help found in this discussion group), which is now 1 hour 16 minutes of old Super 8 footage I've had telecined and transferred to digital files. No audio, just video. I'd like the end product to be a DVD playable on any computer or television in the best possible quality. I've started an export via Quick Time Conversion, but the time estimate keeps getting longer. It is now telling me at least 5 hours. Did I pick the wrong output format? Should it be Quick Time movie? And which settings should I use? Thanks in advance.

You should export to QuickTime Movie.

  • How to best output Shake files to FCP so that FCP likes them

    Hi,
I think this post might be better suited for the Shake Subsection.
I have a totally tricked out 8 core Mac pro with 8 GB ram and a 1 TB drive (mostly empty). I'm using the Latest FCP. Recently, I've been editing some HD video that I've shot and have been quite pleased with the performance of the machine/software. However, I am experiencing a weird problem. I also have Shake, which I am using to do some composting and, relevantly, remove a small amount of camera vibration from my footage. (It works great.)
However, any files that I export from Shake, using (as best as I can tell) the exact same file formats and codecs that my imported Raw (unprocessed in Shake) video is. That is: they are quicktime files, Using HDV 1080p30fps, with 29.97 FPS "drop frame" codec. While the raw imported files work great, the files I export from Shake and put into my timeline result in a "Spinning Ball" whenever I do anything at all to them- play them, move the timeline around, cut, apply a filter etc,.
    What am I overlooking?
What settings can I use in the Output Node to emulate the "native" captured video of FCP.

From page 167 of the Shake manual:
    Shake Does Not Support HDV
Shake does not support long-GOP formats, including HDV, MPEG-2, or MPEG-1. If you
want to use HDV media that was captured with Final Cut Pro or Final Cut Express HD
in Shake, recompress it with the Apple Intermediate Codec first.
Actually, that is a bit outdated. Try using Apple ProRes 422 as your intermediate codec.
In fact, you might want to do your FCP editing in ProRes as well:

  • Best output option for video when doing adr and vocal recording?

I know this topic has come up before on occasion but I wanted to bring it up to hopefully reach a final conclusion.
Does anyone know the best configuration to use for ADR and other vocal recording in Logic when the mic and screen are in a separate room? The options I've seen so far are:
    - Send video via DV firewire to a converter box and then to a monitor. With limited firewire ports already in use for the audio interface and dsp units, has anyone tried daisy chaining or using a firewire hub for dv output to a monitor?
    or
    - Use a DVI splitter to run to a 3rd LCD monitor(as a 2nd one is already in use) so the regular 'video window' could be dragged across to appear on the vocalist/actor's monitor.
These are the only choices I've seen seen so far but if anyone has any other's or recommendations on which of these to go for, I'd love to hear them.
    Cheers
