Best practice: read information from server

Hi All,
currently I am wondering about the best-practice approach to read/write data from an iPhone app to a webserver.
What is the easiest way to achieve such a scenario? Is it just to build an easy SQL server online an connect via xcode? Using which frameworks/protocols would be best-practice in xcode? What would be the best setup for communication between an iPhone app and any server-instance in the web?
My goal is more or less to read data from a server when the application is started and write some data to this server when the user has input some text details.
Regards,
Patrick

  • Best practice video conversion from download

I am looking for best practice for video conversions.
I am downloading adobe recordings via this method:
    http://server.adobeconnect.com/xyz/output/filename.zip?download=zip
From here, I have been converting the FLVs using either freemake video converter or FLV converter. I have tried converting into AVI (XVID), MOV, WMV, etc. (I need the file to be under 600 MB for an hour of recording, therefore it is going to need some type of compression).
My goal is to import the video into Sony Vegas Pro 10 for further editting. I have found that whatever method I use, the video and audio does not sync properly about 50% of the time. The video time is longer than the audio time usually. Or that there are other various errors, such as the video just freezing halfway through the video.
I have been using connect for a few years now, but with each update I find (connect 8, 9, etc), that the problems are getting worse. At this point I am just wasting time trying to convert into various formats using various codecs just trying to luck upon one where the video is at least without error.
What methods are others using to convert the FLV to a workable editable format?

Can't the FLV files be changed into many different formats through Apple's
Compressor or Adobe Media Encoder? These formats can then be opened in
standard video editing software for editing.

Yes, I use this as a last resort, as the quality of capture this was is
signifcatnly lower. As well as it is a much more time consuming process. I
sometimes have over 50 parts of 1 hour video. To use camtasia, you need
first to record it, then it must be saved in a camtasia format, and then
lastly rendered into avi or wmv. Therefore, it is does take awhile.
Really, I feel there shouldnt be so many errors in the conversion process,
but I am finding the FLV recordings themselves have problems. This last
file I am looking at, even the recording playback on adobe connect, has
serious issues with audio and video sync. A problem that is all too common

  • DNS Configured-Best Practice on Snow Leopard Server?

How many of you configure and run DNS on your Snow Leopard server as a best practice, even if that server is not the primary DNS server on the network, and you are not using Open Directory? Is configuring DNS a best practice if your server has a FQDN name? Does it run better?
I had an Apple engineer once tell me (this is back in the Tiger Server days) that the servers just run better when DNS is configured correctly, even if all you are doing is file sharing. Is there some truth to that?
I'd like to hear from you either way, whether you're an advocate for configuring DNS in such an environment, or if you're not.
    Thanks.

Ok, local DNS services (unicast DNS) are typically straightforward to set up, very useful to have, and can be necessary for various modern network services, so I'm unsure why this is even particularly an open question.  Which leads me to wonder what other factors might be under consideration here; of what I'm missing.
The Bonjour mDNS stuff is certainly very nice, too.  But not everything around supports Bonjour, unfortunately.
As for being authoritative, the self-hosted out-of-the-box DNS server is authoritative for its own zone.  That's how DNS works for this stuff.
And as for querying other DNS servers from that local DNS server (or, if you decide to reconfigure it and deploy and start using DNS services on your LAN), then that's how DNS servers work.
And yes, the caching of DNS responses both within the DNS clients and within the local DNS server is typical.  This also means that there is need no references to ISP or other DNS servers on your LAN for frequent translations; no other caching servers and no other forwarding servers are required.

  • Is there a list of best practices for Azure Sql Server?

I was talking with a Sql Server expert today and learned that Azure Sql Server can take up to a minute to respond to a query that normally takes a fraction of a second. This is one of those things where it's really valuable to learn it when architecting as
opposed to when we go live.
Is there a list of best practices for Azure Sql Server? If so, what are they?
We will be calling the database from multiple instances, both Azure websites and Azure cloud services. The calls will be about 90% selects, 9% updates, and 1% inserts.

  • Passing Information From Server to GUI

Hi, I'm making a chat client, but I'm having trouble passing information from server's input stream to my GUI. I made two threads, one for sending and one for receiving, and I start them both when I click "connect" after I log in to the server. So what happens is I run my program, the frame appears as I want it to, and then I click connect, and after a little wait the button "unclicks" (or w/e) and nothing happens. I don't know why I am not receiving the messages from the server. If I make the program "GUI-less" it works, I can both send and receive messages via the console. But in the GUI, where I am sending/receiving via my two TextAreas, it doesn't work. Here's my code:
(I apologize ahead of time for posting so much code in a thread, I tried to cut it down as best as I could.)

                catch(IOException e) {
                    System.out.println(e);
}So, to repeat my questions, SendAndReceive class, but I'm not sure if this is the right approach.why isn't my TextArea (BotWindow.outText) not receiving and setting it's text to the information from the server? Is my threading correct? Also, with the way I set up the threads, will the Send function be able to send in the midst of the receive function? I tried to set it up so that it could by implementing ActionListener in my SendAndReceive class, but I am not sure if this is the correct approach.
P.S. The reason I put this in Swing is because it works without a GUI/Swing components! If it will help, I will post the GUI-less program I made that works.

  • How to retrieve information from server?

    Hi,
I'm currently working on a project, which is implemented with JSP. The function of the JSP is to connect to different servers within the Intranet(IP address already known) and get database list & file list residing on each server. And then compose all those information into a table, and display them in JSP. I just wonder how can I connect to those server? Can I just set up a socket client? Once the connection between servers has been setup, how can I retreive information from server? Are there any reference I can use? Thank you very much for your considerations.
    Myra

Actually, I need extract some information from the file, and those files are on the server. In this case, do you think I should use FTP client to visit server? The server is running with Weblogic.

  • Best practice for exporting from iMovie '08 to iDVD

I am looking to find out what is the best practice for exporting from iMovie '08 to iDVD. I have read the other postings that give the basic howto (export to Media Browser then select the video in iDVD). However, my question is a little more technical. I have 1080i HD projects. I am interested in burning them to DVD in the best possible quality. What setting should I be using when I publish to Media Browser?
I am wondering about quality loss due to more than one conversion/compression. I suspect that when I export to the Media Browser then this is occurring. If I am not mistaken iMovie is using something like H.264 for this. Then, when I run iDVD I suspect it will it do another conversion/compression, I think to get to MPEG2. Not only could this result in a loss of quality but also it will take extra time. I am interested to know what others think about this.
Finally, I am looking to create DVDs for a lot of video. I am wondering if there are any USB or firewire hardware devices out there that could speed up the compression. I use the Elgato Turbo.264 when I want to encode to H.264 but I wonder if there is something similar for DVD creation.
    Thanks in advance.

the standards for videoDVD are 720x480, and usually mpeg2 encoded..
so, your HiDef project HAS to be 'downsampled' somehow..
I would Export with Qucktime/apple intermediate => which is the 'format' your project is allready, and you avoid any useless 'inbetween encoding'..
iDVD will 'swallow' this huge export file - don't mind: iDVD cares for length, not size.
iDVD will then convert into DVD-standards..
you can 'raise' quality, by using projects <60min - this sets iDVD automatically to highest technical possible bitrate
hint: judge pic quality on a DVDplayer + TV.. not on your computer (DVDs are meant for TVdelivery)

it seems obvious, user EWMTRACKTEST doesn`t have access to directory /tmp and the file under that.
try to give read permission and try again.
you could use command line like 'chmod' to grant permissions.

  • Best Practices for NCS/PI Server and Application Monitoring question

    Hello,
I am deploying a virtual instance of Cisco Prime Infrastructure 1.2 (1.2.1.012) on an ESX infrastructure. This is being deployed in an enterprise enviroment. I have questions around the best practices for moniotring this appliance. I am looking to monitor application failures (services down, db issues) and "hardware" (I understand this is a virtual machine, but statistics on the filesystem and CPU/Memory is good).
Firstly, I have enabled via the CLI the snmp-server and set the SNMP trap host destination. I have created a notification receiver for the SNMP traps inside the NCS GUI and enabled the "System" type alarm. This type includes alarms like NCS_DOWN and PI database is down. I am trying to understand what the difference between enabling SNMP-SERVER HOST via the CLI and setting the Notification destination inthe GUI is? Also how can I generate a NCS_DOWN alarm in my lab. Doing NCS stop does not generate any alarms. I have not been able to find much information on how to generate this as a test.
Secondly, how and which processes should I be monitoring from the Management Station? I cannot easily identify the main NCS procsses from the output of ps -ef when logged in the shell as root.
    Thanks guys!

I am aware that there are a list of scopes like page, application, etc. and that if i use 'session' my variable will live for as long as that session is alive. (did i get this right?). You should rather look to the functional requirements instead of costs. If the bean need to be session scoped (e.g. maintain the logged in user), then do it so. If it just need to be request scoped (e.g. single page form data), then keep it request scoped.
2.)If the JSP Page where i use that <useBean> is to be accessed hundred of times a day, will it compensate my server resources? Right now i am using the Sun Glassfish Server. It will certainly eat resources. Just supply enough CPU speed and memory to a server. You cannot expect that a webserver running at a Pentium 500MHz with 256MB of memory can flawlessly serve 100 simultaneous users at the same second. But you may expect that it can serve 100 users per 24 hour.
3.) Can you suggest best practice in memory management given the architecture i described above?Just write code so that it doesn't unnecessarily eat memory. Only allocate memory if your application need to do so. You should rather let the hardware depend on the application requirements, not to let the application depend on the hardware specs.
4.)Also, I have implemented connection pooling in my architecture, but my application is to be used by thousands of clients everyday.. Can the Sun Glassfish Server take care of that or will I have to purchase a powerful sever?Glassfish is just an application server software, it is not server hardware. Your concerns are rather hardware related.
