BEx Analyzer Performance

Hi All,
We're using the BEx Analyzer (7.x version) based on SAP Gui 6.40 patch level 29.
When opening workbooks in the (new) BEx Analyzer the local PC CPU usage is exploding and stays on 99% / 100% all the time, even when the results are in and no navigation is done. All this is resulting in poor workbook and PC performace.
Any ideas?
Our specs are:
Gui640, version 29 (gui640_29-10001615.exe)
Business Warehouse, version 13 (bw350_13-10001615.exe)
BW700, version 16 (BW700SP16_1600-10001615.EXE)
Thanks a lot!
Cheers, Ron

  • BEx Analyzer 3.1 Workbook Performance

    Hi SAP Gurus,
I have to evaluate  the performance of BEx Workbook in SAP BW 3.1. Some of the CCA Workbooks takes 1 hour to load. As I know RSRT can use to evaluate the query performance and RSTT is use for workbook trace in BI 7.0  but how can i evaluate the performance of BEx Workbook in SAP BW 3.1. All kind of help will be appreciated.
    Thanks in Advance to All.

    Hi,
kindly refer to below SAP notes

  • Poor performance when refreshing BEx Analyzer workbook

We have a BEx Analyzer workbook that consists of about 10 worksheets, each displaying data from a different query. Refreshing the workbook in BEx Analyzer takes a very long time, typically 20 minutes or so. During this refresh process there is very little activity on the BW system itself. Each individual query runs on the web in a few seconds. Aggregates have been built for every query in the workbook.
The workbook's file size has also increased from ~2MB  to 15MB as changes are made to the workbook.
Any suggestions on how to improve workbook performance would be helpful.
    Thanks,
    Jason Kraft

    Hi Jason,
On the file size, I recommend a VBA macro which reformats the sheets for you, particularly getting rid of use of colour as much as possible.
The portal performance and the BEx Analyzer performance may be dependent on different servers. It could be that the BEx Analyzer is using the local machines CPU power. Just monitor CPU usage during idle times, opening of BEx and then refresh of the query data to see the demand.
The portal on the other hand could use an entirely different server which has more CPU power and capacity than the platform that Analyzer is being run on.
Incidentally, 20 minutes wait for a workbook with 10 sheets isn't necessarily a huge waiting time if these queries are returning many rows.

  • BEx Analyzer: User ID based performance issue

    Hello Ladies and Gents,
    <b>The issue:</b>
My BW team just upgraded our system to 2004s and we are experiencing an odd userid based performance issue.  If we run a query from the BEx Analyzer with user ID 'A' it takes about 3min for the variable selection screen to appear. If I log into the same machine user ID 'A' was using on my user ID B the query variable selection screen appears within seconds. What could possibly cause this?
    <b>What we know so far:</b>
    1. Investigated the security roles, seems like that is not the issue.
    2. It is PC client independent.  Two different user IDs(A and B) on the same machine running the same query in the same way (clicking through the BEx browser) produces different response times for the appearance of the variable selection screen.
Points will be rewarded and help will be greatly appreciated!

User specific personalization is retrieved before displaying the input variables. That might be a possibility, but hard to see it making such a difference.  Do you always try the sequence of User A, then User B, or have you confirmed that when you start with User B, it is quick, and tehn slow whne trying User A?
Probably the best approach is to activate Trace and then logon with User A, turn trace off and print or save, then do the same thing for User B and compare.  The trace will show you all the various SQL stmts and such that run as part of your trying to launch the query.
Please post back anything you learn.
Some info on Personalization  for the Help pages.
    Personalization in BEx
    Use
This function allows users to fill variables with user-specific values, to save user-specific accesses to BI objects for the history view in the BEx Open dialog box, and to save user-specific start views for Web applications.
    Integration
The personalized data is stored in different DataStore objects, according to the personalization area.
    ·        User-specific variable values are stored in the DataStore object 0Pers_VAR.
    ·        Personalized data for the history view is stored in the DataStore object 0Pers_BOD.
    ·        Personalized start views for the Web application are stored in the DataStore object 0Pers_WTE.

  • Poor performance of BEx Analyzer in excel 2007

    Hi all,
after upgrading my office to version 2007, BEx Analyzer runs very slowly. The query is executed fast at the server but the excel visualisation of data in the workbook takes a lot of time. There is no problem on other computers with office 2003.
I have gone through all the notes but couldn't find anu solution.
Do I have to disable something in excel?
The performance doesn't have anything to do with my system spec (IBM T61 with 3 gig of RAM).
    Thanks for any help.
    Jan

We are getting similar issues excel 2007 takes ages to visualise the results of the bw query compared to excel 2003.
It is particularly an issue on very large excel files 10MB+.
I dont think many business have gone for this combination so far, the response I have from SAP is that it is a microsoft issue.
No resolution so far other than to put users back to office 2003.

  • BEx Analyzer versus BEx Web Analyzer and BIA performance

    Hi Experts,
Recently I tested the performance of a few of our queries running off Infocubes with indexes loaded to the BIA and I noticed some differences in performance when using BEx Web Analyzer versus BEx Analyzer in Excel.  Seems that when using the Web Analyzer the query returned the result at a much faster rate than when using BEx Analyzer in Excel.  I did notice that the slow point in Excel is at the "Formatting Results Areas" stage.  This can take up a long time to complete.  My question is, does anyone else experience this?  What could be the cause?  Is this normal behaviour?  Any recommendation to solve this?
    Thanks very much.

    Hi David,
Yes, Excel-based BEx Analyzer is almost always slower then Web (and especially on 3.x tools), and it has not much to BIA.
For web - formatting is happening on  the BI server and then result is transferred to end-user machine in one shot (or as many shots as individual MIMEs to transfer). For Excel - first you have a transfer of data set to your PC (that might require several round-trips) and then formatting is all on the PC.
    Possible ways to improve:
    1) Check that your anti-virus does not impact opening excel workbook
    2) Upgrade PC hardware (absolutely seriously)
    3) Switch off formatting of workbook or at least remove exceptions and total/subtotal lines.

    -Vitaliy

  • Query executes in RSRT but not in BEx Analyzer

    Hi Everyone,
I have a query for an infocube and ods object, in the bex analyzer for the infocube the query executes which has around 5000 records but for the ods object which has also 5000 records comes up with this error.
<b>An exception with the type CX_SY_EXPORT_NO_SHARED_MEMORY occurred, but was
neither handled locally, nor declared in a RAISING
    Message no. RS_EXCEPTION000</b>
when I execute the query in RSRT it comes up.
After closing and re logging into bex analyzer executes the query for the first but for the second time again it throws up this error.
What could be the problem? Can anyone please let me know. Its really really urgent.
    Thanks,
    Prashant.

    hi Prashant,
try check in RSRT, after choose your query, click 'properties' and set cache mode to 'main memory cache without swapping'.
also check oss note 656060-OLAP: Cache main memory displacement not functioning.
    hope this helps.
    Symptom
Although one of the following two cache modes
Main Memory Cache Without Swapping (mode 1)
Main Memory Cache With Swapping (mode 2)
is set for a query, long runtimes occur when you execute the query. The statistics (table RSDDSTAT) display the database times.
If there is a heavy system load, the following message can also appear: RS_EXCEPTION000: No left space in shared memory.
    Other terms
    Cache, performance, displacement, shared buffer
    Reason and Prerequisites
This problem occurs because the shared memory is insufficiently dimensioned.
    <b>Solution</b>
Increase the amount of shared memory. The size of the shared memory should be at least 200 MB. You can refer to transaction RSRCACHE for the amount of memory reserved by the main memory cache (RSRCACHE -> Main Memory: Shared Memory/Buffer Reserved).
The corresponding settings are (at least):
    rsdb/esm/buffersize_kb = 200000
    and, as a precaution, also
    rsdb/esm/max_objects = 10000.
Alternatively, for queries with large resulting quantities, you can convert the Cache Mode in transaction RSRT1 to
Cluster/Flat File Cache for Each Application Server (mode 3)
Cluster/Flat File Cache Across Each Application Server (mode 4)

  • BEx Analyzer workbook working strangely with reset_area functionality

    Hi Experts,
In my BEx Analyzer I have got an input ready query for planning. It displays data correctly. In my workbook I have a button for variables, a button to save the data to planned cube and a button for reset. For the reset button i have used the function reset_area.
Problem - Reset button works clears the analysis grid with data. But once the data is saved reset button will not work. We have to click on the variables button to reset the grid. So again the variables screen will pop up. As a result the end user is confused. Is there a unique behavior for BEx Analyzer. User found that reset button is not working after saving a result.
Is there any workaround for this. Please clarify on the issue.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Jerry

    Hello Jerry,
Functionality of reset will work only before Save ,once data is been saved no reset operations can be performed.
After Save only refresh is performed which can fetch you the data been saved .You can educate users that reset can be done only until save the data once data is been saved they can't system can't erase it completely however they can change key figure values.

  • Advantages and Disadvantages of BEx Analyzer

    Dear All,
Please specify the ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES of using BEx Analyzer for reporting over a browser.Does the analyzer provide better performance?generate exhaustive reports?and found better by users since it is excel based?
    Yours truly,
    Ratish

    Hello Ratish,
The advantages and disadvantages are primarily based on the light weight client and heavy client.
    Excel -
    1. It is heavy weight and needs a client installation
    2. Analysis is easier , as excel functionalities can be used over BI data
    3. People who know excel will like this
    Web-
      1. It is light weight and no installation needed at the client as browser will be available
      2. Can not analyze the data from the report ( you need copy to excel)
In simple analysts and expert users like excel.
Users who just view the report and no more analysis will be happy with web.

  • BEx analyzer hangs

    Hi All,
We are experiencing error, when we execute the Sales Report in BEx analyzer.
We have a sales report which extract data for 3 regions US, ASIA, EUROPE.
We tried to execute the sales data extract query for one month ( eg. May 2008) and for all 3 region. After 10 to 15 min Bex analyzer gave error message that " Critical Pgm error occurred"
Then we tried to execute the report for one month ( eg. May 2008) and for particular Region ( Asia , US, EUROPE).And we are able to get the result within 10 min
The amount of data for particular month ( May 2008) is as follows:
    No Of Rows File Size
    US: 4500 10.6 MB
    ASIA: 8000 20.4MB
    EUROPE: 3500 7.3MB
We executed the same report in server class machine ( it has 4 GB RAM)  without region criteria, (For all regions) we got result with in 5 min.Size of that file is 37 MB and it has around 16K rows .
Our local machine has 1 GB RAM and office 2003.
    We are having following configurations:
    EP 7.0/SPS14
    BI 7.0/SP16
Please brief on limitations if any of BEx analyzer.
    regards
    Preethish

    Hello Preetish,
i dnt think this is any thing with version of bex analyser as we faced the same problem in our office what you need to do is the performance tuning or break the data in to according to regions based on months and also i think you got limited tablespace(Memory) resources. If possible increase it.The only solution you can do it immeadiately is  break the amount of data retreving based on region and month.
Assigning points = Thanks in SDN.
    Thanks & Regards

  • BEx Analyzer workbook cannot be refreshed

When i create an BEx analyzer workbook using the 'insert analysis grid' option as opposed to the 'open query' option, i cannot refresh the workbook when i reopen it.
The steps i am taking to reproduce this error are
    1) Open analyzer
    2) Open new excel workbook
    3) Insert analysis grid and select query to populate the grid. When i get out of design mode i get my query and can perform all usual drill down options
    4) Save workbook (typically i use *.xlsx but i have also tried *.xlsm) as a local workbook or on the server
    5) Close workbook
    6) Reopen workbook - at this point i cannot refresh the workbook or change variables and i notice there is no data provider in the workbook settings
My system has the following configuration
SAP GUI 7.10 Patch level 16
Excel 2007 (SP2 and SP1, have tried with both)
Windows XP/Windows 7 (have tried with both)
My business explorer analyzer is BI AddOn 7.X, support package 9, patch 1, revision 1507
    Any ideas?

I have noticed that this option is not checked also when i create and save a new workbook using the 'Open query' as opposed to the 'insert analysis grid' option. But workbooks created using the 'Open Query' method still work despite this.
Actually if i create a workbook using the 'insert analysis grid' option and then open the workbook properties - even if i do not change anything in the workbook properties, as long as i open and close the properties, then save my workbook (i am saving the workbook as a local file) i will be able to refresh and use the analyzer options on this workbook after i close and re-open the workbook. To clarify the sequence of events i am trying to explain here is [Open excel --> Insert analysis grid --> get out of design mode and select variable to populate query --> open workbook properties --> close workbook properties (without changing any settings) --> save workbook locally --> close workbook --> re-open workbook --> the workbook is connected to server and i can refresh]
But if i just create a workbook via the 'Insert analysis grid' method, then save workbook --> close work book --> reopen workbook. I am not able to reconnect this workbook to server, which mean i cannot refresh, and actually if i check my workbook properties after reopening the file i notice that their is no data provider in the 'Data Providers' TAB, basically my workbook just becomes an excel file and not an analyzer workbook.

  • Bex Analyzer 7.0 - BexEventHandler in Netweaver 2004s

Hi, I noticed that in Bex Analyzer 7.0, there is a new class called BexEventHandler which gets hit each time I select a cell or a worksheet within my VBA code.  This did not happen in Analyzer 3.5.  And because of this, I am experiencing major performance issue in my macro.
I have a workbook that contains 10 queries (10 worksheets) and a VBA code that merges all the data from the queries into 1 single worksheet.  Upon conversion to 7.0, my code is now running extremely slow as it is always going to the BExEventHandler class at each cell.select or sheet.select.
Does anyone know how to bypass this BexEventhandler in Bex Analyser 7.0??
Would appreciate any feedback you can provide.
    Thanks,
    Sheila

Hi, I found the command in VBA that does disables the Bex event handler code.
    Application.EnableEvents = False
Set this to false before your code starts and set it to true again after your code.

  • BEX Analyzer - Query Crashes Problem

    Dear all,
I have consumption of 5 million customers. What i need to do is to group consumptions depend on groups:
Lets say 0-100 USD 100-1000USD  1000-5000 USD in bex analyzer,
my query works fine with less data, however when i run with 5 million customer, bex analyzer crashes when running query.
What can i do that? should it be reletaed with ram? or olap cache? How to run query successfully?
    Thanks

    Hi
Excel 2007 has got only one million no of rows. restrict your query as much as possible. We also faced the similar issue when executing query based on articles.
Try creating different queries based on groups such as customer group or material group then execute. your system performance drastically goes down if you execute such a big query without many restrictions.
    Thanks

  • Launch of BEx Analyzer via RRMX, other transaction?

Transaction RRMX has been a common means for us to launch the BEx Analyzer in our BW 3.x system.  After upgrading to NW04s, transaction RRMX continues to call the 3.x BEx Analyzer.  Is there a way to have this call the new NW04s (7.0) BEx Analyzer or perhaps to call it from a different backend transaction?
    Regards,

    Hi Bala
We have upgraded our development box to 2004S including front end ( SP9 and FEP 903). As we are not able to perform old 3.5 functionalities in 2004S with FEP 903 we have decided to go back to 3.x Bex Analyzer.
As you explained below, can you please shred some light how to configure to launch only 3.x BEx anayzer from START->PROGRAM->BUISNESS EXPLORER. We dont want to see the 2004S BEx analyzer if we navigate from START menu.
I am able to bring 3.X analyzer through RRMX after making changes in the GLOBAL SETTINGS as you said.
I am not able to locate Analyzer under BEx in my PC as you mentioned below.
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SAP\BEx\Analyzer]
    "LAUNCH_VERSION"="LEGACY
Can you provide me more details for the sentence "For non NW04s BW system to launch only 3.x BEX, there is a fix that need to be applied to the backend system" as you mentioned previously.
    I appreciate your help.
