Blank CDs not recognized by burning programs [SOLVED]

EDIT: By some divine intervention, the computer just started recognizing my blank CDs, I have no idea why it just started working, but it did!
Hi all, got a new laptop recently (Dell Vostro 1320) but burning programs don't let me choose a "destination drive", as if one doesn't exist. However, if I insert an acutal DVD, vlc-player will run it just fine. If I insert a blank disk, under gnome's "places" an option for Blank CD shows up, but when I click it, nothing seems to happen. How can I make burning programs recognize the existence of my drive? perhaps its not pointed in the right direction? I have brasero and graveman.
Here is my policy file for HAL
<config version="0.1">
<match user="tom">
  <return result="yes"/>
</match>
</config>
I also have my CD/DVD lines commented out in /etc/fstab
#/dev/sr0               /media/cdrom  iso9660  ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
#/dev/cdrom             /media/cd   udf    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
#/dev/dvd               /media/dvd  auto    ro,user,noauto,unhide   0      0
#/dev/fd0               /media/fl   auto    user,noauto             0      0
NOTE: I've tried playing around with fstab, commenting, uncommenting, but to no level of success. Please let me know if you need me to post more outputs.
I will try to post some more information about my burning program preferences.
Thanks for your help, and hopefully, it can be resolved!

fstab wont help you at all - that's for reading, not writing.
I know zip about brasero et al, but cdrecord/wodim should be ok to use.
Most probably, your cd will be /dev/sr0 and to burn an iso-image you do something like this:
cdrecord -v driveropts=burnfree dev=/dev/sr0 -dao -eject -data /name/of/iso/image
I hope you realize that cd/dvd-burning is mostly a matter of transferring a whole image, you can't really use it as a 'normal' filesystem (at least as far as writing is concerned).
I guess someone will jump down my throat and tell me it is possible - and it is ... though not in the usual way of using a filesystem ...

  • Burned CDs not recognized on PC

I burned two CDs several weeks ago with one movie each that was recognized and played by my daughter's PC. However, I have burned three other CDs with movies since then in three ways different to the first ones which were not recognized by my daughter's PC and, of course, were not played. I then burned another CD as I had the first two but this CD was not recognized by her PC.
Do you have any suggestions about burning a CD on an iMac that can be recognized by a PC? I don't understand why the first two CDs were recognized and playable and the last one was not.
    Thanks for your help.
    Vernon

What was the video format of the movie that was successfully recognized and played on your daughters PC? What program is your daughter using to view the CD?
The movie files were in Quicktime which she has and used to view them.
What program did you use to burn the CD?
I used a burn folder from Finder for the movie CDs.
What is the video format of the other movies that you unsuccessfully burned?
    Quicktime.
All CDs played on my iMac with Quicktime and also with RealPlayer.
    Any suggestions?

  • Blank DVD not recognized, blank CDs ok

Every time I insert a blank DVD it gets spit out after about a minute. Blank CDs work fine and can be mounted in the Finder and burned. I've tried swapping out the Superdrive and get the same results. Anyone else have this problem?

Thanks Ian. I had not considered the media itself being an issue since I've had successful burns with this pack of DVD-Rs before. But it turns out these DVD-Rs (TDK) won't burn on any of my Macs now. I tried them on a Mac Pro, MacBook Pro and iMac. These DVD-Rs all worked fine in past, but they fail now. I tried DVD+R DL discs and they worked fine, as did single layer DVD+R. I'm wondering if there is some issue with DVD-R media now? I think I'll stick with DVD+R media for now.

  • Blank discs not recognized after installing security update

Just installed the latest security update and now the computer will not recognize either blank CDs or DVDs. The first time I popped one into my external burner, I got the notice that I'd inserted a blank DVD and was asked if I'd like to open it in the finder (even though I had already set this as the default option). Then when I said yes, I got an error message that the disk could not be read. Ever since, I no longer get the notice, just the error message. Moreover, "drutil eject tray" will not eject the disk.
Same thing happens with the internal drive. Again, drutil did not work and I had to restart to eject the disk.
Disk Utility shows the disk but will not allow me to format it.
These disks were working fine until I installed the security update.
    Anybody have any ideas?
    Thanks.

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!
If many Permission are repaired, or any Directory errors are found, you may need to re-apply some the latest/biggest updates.
May even need to do an Archive and Install if you have room on the HD...

I only use Software Update to see what is needed, then get them for real via...
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
That way I can wait a week or so, check the forums for potential problems, and get Permissions & such in order before installing.

  • Can't see blank cds or dvds, no burn options

I recently started organizing my photos from the past year and wanted to burn them to a cd or dvd as an archive. I found that whenever I insert a blank cd or dvd I get music or video options but no burn option, and no icons show up on my desktop. The only way that I have been able to burn media is to create a burn folder and then insert a blank disk. These then show up on my hard drive but don't see visible on my b&w g3 or my husbands non mac pc. All of this is off a clean reinstall of system software and upgrades to 10.4.4

Take a look at your CDs & DVDs System Preferences. What options are specified for what happens when you insert blank CDs or DVDs? If you want to burn disks with files & folders on them, set it to "Open Finder". You will then be prompted to give your disk a name when you put it in. If you get the music option, you'd have to next open iTunes and burn a music CD from iTunes. Mac OS X will reserve a disk like this and not show it in the finder because it thinks you want to open iTunes and burn your music from there.
A DVD burned on a Mac will not be usable in a Windows PC. Because they hold more information, they'll be formatted as a Mac OS Extended format disk. Without some third party software, a Mac formatted disk like this is not readable by a Windows PC. However, a standard data CD burned by the Finder should be. It will be a "hybrid" Mac OS Extended/ISO9660 disk that should be readable by both a Mac and a Windows PC. It's possible the type of CD-R disks you're using don't work well with your PC's optical drive, you might try a different brand. Since the Blue & White G3 was constructed before CD-Rs or DVD±R/RWs were invented, it's likely it may not be able to read those kidns of disks as well.

  • CDs not recognized [SOLVED]

    Hello,
I've been having a strange problem with getting any CDs to be recognized or "mounted" within Arch--they don't show up in pcmanfm's sidebar; DVDs and removable USB/SD work fine, however. What's even weirder is that Mplayer can find and play the CD.
    I'm using:
    kernel 2.6.31.6-1
    hal 0.5.13-3
    dbus 1.2.16-1
    My fstab
    # /etc/fstab: static file system information

    LABEL=Shared /mnt/shared ntfs-3g users,uid=1000,gid=100,fmask=0113,dmask=0002 0 0
I've commented out the optical drives as mentioned in several places.
I also had to add "ck-launch-session openbox-session" to my openbox configuration, as I was getting permission errors with accessing removable media before and this seems like the solution. It didn't fix CDs, though.
This is the output of dmesg upon inserting a CD. I'll gladly post any other info as requested:

  • Blank DVD not recognized

I built my project in Encore and checked the project for any errors and then clicked on Build to burn the project to a blank DVD, but I get an error message stating, Please insert DVD media, close the tray, and click OK. My DVD burner works with other applications so I know that the driver works. Does anyone have any idea what is going on?

    John,
I have many problems with Adobe CS5. I have problems with CS4 and I have
    nowhere left to turn.
I have problems with Fireworks in both versions.  I can't associate image
file types with Fireworks CS4 or CS5  Adobe Support logged into two of my
computers and they were not able to solve the problem on either of my two 64
bit computers. They created new admin accounts on both machines. No change.
I went back to using Fireworks 8, which fits my work model better anyway
because I had to repeatedly "float windows" to build animated GIF files. I
totally gave up on that one.
I have problems importing Premiere Pro 1.5 project files in to Premiere
CS4 - Most of the AVI source files "cannot be imported" when loading a
prproj file. Error message:- "Cannot link media: selected file cannot be
linked because its type (audio) does not match the original file's type
(audio and video)".  If I import the files they appear as red boxes with
    Chinese writing.
I cannot build a DVD with Encore CS5. 1: click "Build - 2: Pop up screen
shows DVD, says "Drag file" Then the drive door opens and the pop up screen
goes away. 3: "Please insert DVD" - Close. Goes back to 2 with the pop up
    screen (endless loop).
Apparently all Adobe phone and chat support is in India. They keep asking
the same questions over and over and over: "What is the error message" -- I
tell them the error, then they ask "what is the error message"... etc. They
asked me to enter a URL for access - I get a gray screen. They said use a
different browser. I loaded the same URL in three other browsers, same
result. Then there was a "server error". I asked that they email me the URL
in case I wasn't understanding it.. I was told they do not have access to
email until after they have failed to solve a problem. Now that's logical!
Well, After Effects works, at least.  Dreamweaver "works" but they've just
managed to make it more difficult to use. They took things out that should
have been left alone. It now takes several steps to do what took one step in
CS3. The audio editing program distorts with my $80 USB microphone.
What am I to do at this point? I spent a lot of money and all I got was a
bunch of problems that nobody in India seems to have a clue how to fix. I am
informed that there is no one connected with Adobe support who speaks
English well enough to understand or be understood.
Sales (chat and phone) got my order wrong four times in a row, and when they
finally got it right they shipped it the wrong day.
AMD 64 - Windows XP Pro (4GB), Windows 7/32 Pro (4GB), Windows Vista Home
    Premium (4GB).
I'm building a new machine (Windows 7/64 Pro, 16GB RAM, AMD Phenom II x6).
Maybe something will work on it.
Needless to say, I am very disappointed with my large "investment" in Adobe.

  • Blank cdr not recognized (still not answered)

    i have a new intel imac 17" 1.83ghz. 2gb ram.
all has been great with this baby, i've been burning both in itunes and finder. no problems at all! and then all of a sudden itunes doesn't show the cdr anymore.
now i've tried changing it to "ask me", open finder and open itunes. when i open in finder, it's there in finder and on the desktop but still not in itunes. if i open with itunes, it will open itunes or flash the screen if it's already open and it won't show up in finder or the desktop.
now i can go to a playlist and ctrl click and burn a cd that way. but didn't it used to show the blank cd in that pane? like if i wanted to burn an mp3 cd, couldn't have i in the past dragged in the songs to the cd and then burn it?
i am fully updated on everything. this might be where it all changed. i recently installed the security update and since then, coincidentally or not, is when it happened.
i have yet to see anyone really address this. what's the deal?!
    imac 1.83 intel 17" Mac OS X (10.4.7)
    imac 1.83 intel 17"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Is it a problem that you can't see the blank cdr in iTunes? Because you can still burn cds from iTunes... i don't think iTunes usually has or had a blank cd showing up in the source area. In iTunes Help they say that to burn a cd you have to create a playlist and then click "Burn CD" in the upper right hand corner. Then it tells you to insert a blank disk. I haven't seen anything about dragging the songs to the cd... maybe that was something they had a few years back.

  • Blank CDs not showing up in Finder

When I insert a blank CD it will not show up in the Finder window so I can drag and drop things into it as a burn folder. I have the preference box for showing external media in the Finer checked so I don't understand why the media wouldn't be shown. Any suggestions?

Leave the preferences set to Show in Finder. To burn a disc from iTunes, create/select the playlist you want to burn, and then select File menu > Burn playlist to disc (note: not Back up to disc). iTunes will prompt you to insert a blank disc and then burn to it.
    Hope this helps...

  • CD & DVD Blanks do not mount for burn in OSX 10.6.6

This is an issue with 10.6.6 or possible earlier update. I can mount and burn CD's and DVD's using 10.6.0. I have a disk recovery firewire external harddrive that when I use for diagnosis and repair. This has 10.6.0 as its system. When booting from this system I have full mount and burn functionality. Reboot to the system on my iMac results in the problem below
I am unable to burn CD'd and DVD's. I insert the disk, it goes in and remains in but then - Nothing. My prefs are set to Ask what to do, but none of the pref options have any impact. I can then eject the disk using the eject button. Disk Utility and System Profiler shows the Optical drive as
    Media:
    Type: CD-R
    Blank: Yes
    Erasable: No
    Overwritable: Yes
    Appendable: Yes
    Write Speeds: 8x, 16x, 24x
If I have a CD-R in the disk- so the drive is clearly identifying a blank.
    Inserting a DVD+R returns
    Type: DVD+R
    ID: RICOHJPN R02
    Blank: Yes
    Erasable: No
    Overwritable: Yes
    Appendable: Yes
    Write Speeds: 2.4x, 4x, 6x, 8x
The optical drive is recognising the disk.
But the burn function is not booting.
This is independent of brand of disk. It loaded and burnt disks successfully previously and seems to be related to an OS update. I do this so rarely that I cant really date the start.
I am able to insert and read any type of burnt or recorded disks, CD's, DVD's and mount them.
Have repaired permissions and trashed anything that looks like a CD pref. Have the same problem on my wife's side so it looks like it is not limited to my user account but is a a high level system issue.

Funny, since the upgrade from 10.6.5. to 10.6.6. I too have problems with a formerly more or less perfect system.
Not my finder is freezing but I cannot read or write CD-RWs anymore and I've just discovered a data DVD which the MacMini will not read.
This was NOT the case before the update and it is not a problem with the CD's or DVD's as they can be read via an external drive.
What the **** have you done, Apple, to screw up my computer hardware through a software update?! Huh!?!?!?! FIX IT!!
(Really, I'm done with System upgrades. From now on, if the system runs well, no updates anymore. Not even if it's an "important security upgrade". Screw it. I'm speechless.

  • CDs not recognized: ANY HELP APPRECIATED

    Hello,
I've been an iTunes since the first version and use it on every computer I own. Love it. I am frustrated installing it on some computers at work. I am a music educator and I like to use iTunes to organize and play my library of audio at school.
I have tried using iTunes (ver. 5., 6, and 7) on several different Dell laptops and have consistently had trouble playing (and importing) CDs. When I insert the CD, the Gracenote (CDDB) window pops up and disappears very quickly (too quickly to read...) and the CD never appears in the left panel. When I Run Diagnostics I get the following:

Any help would sincerely be appreciated.

Me too! I have just updated to version 7.0.2, and now iTunes won't recognize any Cd's I put in the drive to import. It hovers for a while at CDDB Gracenote and doesn't respond. Me thinks this is some sort of 7.0.2 gracenote issue. I've never had any issues with iTunes like this before. I am running bullguard version 6.1, microsoft defender, zone alarm, spyware doctor and spybot search and destroy and none of them have intered before. any suggestions?
I think this is disgraceful that iTunes can put out a new version of iTunes with so many inherent bugs. i count my self lucky that it hasn't deleted my library. i'm off now to get an external drive and back the lot up, because i don't have any faith in itunes anymore. i have 13,000 songs, so i'd be a little ticked off!

  • Blank cd not recognized

i am trying to burn a song to a disc for a friend and itunes will not show the cd in the window on the left. itunes opens up when the cd is inserted (i have an ibook), i highlight the songs but "burn playlist to disc" is not highlighted. i can hit the eject disc and the disc does eject. i just burned a cd two weeks ago without a problem. whazz up???
    thanks
    ps, i have v. 6.0.4
    deb

deb, when iTunes opens after you insert the CD-R, pick the playlist that contains the songs you want to burn, make sure the songs are selected (box checked), then click the Burn Disc button. Once the CD has been burned it should appear in the list on the left and the Desktop.

  • CDs not recognized intermittently

I've had the Macbook for two days and have been burning my cd collection to iTunes, and when I insert a cd, there seems to be about a 1/10 chance that it isn't recognized by the Mac. It doesn't show up in iTunes or Finder. The only solution I've found so far is to reboot. Each time it's happened so far, the disc shows up as normal after the reboot. It "works" but the process is fairly annoying. Drive problem? Software problem? I ran software update for the OS and iTunes, but that didn't resolve the issue.

I have a similar problem on my imac 24 inch with 10.5. I am importing my cd collection into itunes and usually the first time I insert a disc it doesn't show up on the desktop. I have to push the eject button on the keyboard and when i insert the disc again it is recognized.

  • Certain cds not recognized

Since itunes was updated to 7.01, some of my CDs on my MacBook are spit back out. They won't load.---Those in question are published by independent labels---but they are still recognized by itunes for windows---(an earlier version). The problem seems to be specific to the 7.01 update for Mac OS. Any suggestions?

I think it happened on Natasha Beddingfield too.
