Boot Server on CD for cross Subnet Jumpstart

I'm looking for a way to do cross subnet jumpstart installs without a boot
server local to the subnet. Is it possible to create a boot server image
on CD similiar to the Jumpstart CD process listed at:
http://www.sun.com/solutions/blueprints/0301/BuildBoot.pdf and have it
point towards my jumpstart server for config/install?
If forced I will build the custom Jumpstart CD but would prefer to boot
remote systems from CD then point back to my Jumpstart Config/Install
server. Easier for standards with one server then multiple releases of
CD's floating around.
If anybody has experience with this help would be greatly appreciated. My builds will be 2.8 and soon migrating to 9.
Thanks!

I did something KINDA like this for Xterms and their boot server. My customer was using Cisco routers. On Ciscos, the IOS config command I used was "ip help-address <IP> or something very similar to that. If I remember correctly, you can also replace IP with a network address in case you needed to move the bootp server around on that network and don't want to continually update the router configuration with the new IP.
Of course, I can't say if this will make a Jumpstart client work. For the Xterms, it worked just fine. Their boot server was 4 networks away - which geographically was about 120 miles away and they booted just fine.

    Hi SQLDBA321,
As your post, SQL Server 2012 or higher version has removed that requirement of virtual local area network (VLAN). For more details, please review this similar blog:

  • Boot server for solaris clients

Can any one give me the steps to configure a temporary boot server .. so that i can boot one of my failing server which does not have cdrom .
I do not want to configure full fledge jumpstart box .. i need it just for recovery purpose. And i want to set it up in one of my other servers .. which is running several solaris zones.

Setting up a "full" jumpstart server is quite easy. You just don't have to make lots of customizations to enable non-interactive installs.
Run the setup_install_server on the media to copy the data to the server. If using CD sets, go through each of the other disks and run the update_install_server scripts. Then run add_install_client in the destination Tool directory to set up all the config files for the client.
(It's possible to skip the first step and do the client setup from the DVD directly, but this is usually simpler).

  • Is Cross Subnet Failover supported in SQL Server 2012 Standard edition?

    Hi,
I'm trying to find out if Cross Subnet Failover is support in SQL Server 2012 Standard edition? From the documentation I can find it appears that AlwaysOn Failover Cluster Instances is supported for two nodes but there is no definitive answer regarding Cross
Subnet failover. Just trying to figure out if it is possible or if I need enterprise or move my replication nodes on the same subnet.
    Thanks David

Sorry chaps, found the answer :-(

  • Cross Subnet Netboot Issues

    Hello,
I've been working to set up a netboot and Open Directory server in school district. We have the network segmented into VLANs by campus with different subnets for each. The changes have been made to the router to allow bootp/bsdp (IPHelper address set and relay agent on) to communicate across subnets, but I am still unable to netboot/netinstall across subnets.
Watching the logs on the server when I attempt to, it seems to be communicating partially as seen here:
    Jul 19 12:48:37 axposeidon bootpd[1822]: BSDP DISCOVER [en1] 1,0:16:cb:8e:50:a6 NetBoot035 arch=i386 sysid=MacBookPro1,1
    Jul 19 12:48:37 axposeidon bootpd[1822]: BSDP OFFER sent [1,0:16:cb:8e:50:a6] pktsize 369
    Jul 19 12:48:37 axposeidon bootpd[1822]: BSDP DISCOVER [en1] 1,0:16:cb:8e:50:a6 NetBoot035 arch=i386 sysid=MacBookPro1,1
    Jul 19 12:48:37 axposeidon bootpd[1822]: BSDP OFFER sent [1,0:16:cb:8e:50:a6] pktsize 369
Unfortunately it fails to actually boot the machine. Im not positive what's going on but it seems like its sending a response back to the netbooting machine but the machine is not getting it and its resending?
The OS X Server is an Intel Xserve running 10.4.10 (though we've been experiencing this issue since as far back as I've been trying with 10.4.8), the image was created in 10.4.8, and works on the local subnet (including multicast ASR). The booting machine is, as noted above, a Macbook Pro.
As a side note, when booted into the OS, the machines can see the server in the Startup Disk preference pane.
Any suggestions or ideas? Let me know if there's more information I can give that will help.

In our district there are multiple public and private subnets. The public and private combination I have the server on currently just happen to be on this physical network, so they are sharing the same router.
I think Im getting a little lost on what you're asking so I'll explain our network structure a little further. The district runs a VLANed network with a different public and private subnet for each campus (the private subnets function mostly as IP address overflow when the public subnet IP limit is exceeded). The network is predominantly PC based and implements active directory servers. The Xserve simply operates as a standalone server currently just handling some web serving tasks and a netboot server.
The issue, regardless of the public and private subnet interfaces on the server, is that I am unable to get anything to boot from another subnet than the one the xserve is running on. If I run it on the public interface, local machines boot perfectly, but I a log like the one above if I try and boot from another campus (ie another VLAN or subnet). To test it locally I've been running it on the private subnet interface (on the same physical network segment) to boot machines on the local public subnet (which fails with the above log).
According to Apple and other sources, all that should need to be configured is our CISCO routers need to be set to pass BOOTP information across VLANs/Subnets, which we have configured (using the IP helper-address and DHCP relay agent), but as stated, the connection is still not succeeding.
I'm checking with our network engineer on a few specifics on how the routers are configured to make sure they are set properly for the forwarding, but he's not available at the moment.
I applogize if this doesnt address the information you're needing, but please let me know if it does not, and I will try my best to get you the needed information.

  • PXE Boot/Ip helper address for staging OS-es

    Hi,
In our production environment there is already a PXE-server SCCM 2007. Now, we're setting up an SCCM 2012-server which we would like to test staging/OS-deployment also.
Is it safe to say we need to add the ip  of the SCCM 2012 "066 Boot Server Host Name" to stage. Note: on switches (Cisco) this is ip helper address,  correct?
    Please clarify.
NOTE: is there an option to make it work WITHOUT needing a new VLAN?
    J.
    Jan Hoedt

DHCP options and IP helper addresses have the same end goal but are completely different things.
IP Helpers automatically forward broadcast requests to a destination system thus "bridging" subnets for services like DHCP and PXE.
DHCP scope options directly instruct the NIC to boot from a specific PXE server.
So, yes, it is possible to manipulate where a client PXE boots from, but it takes an integral understanding of how PXE works, of how IP Helpers work, and of how NICs initiate a PXE boot when either IP Helpers or DHCP scope options are in place (and
thus DHCP also). Because *none* of this really has anything to do with ConfigMgr or even Microsoft itself, there really is no Microsoft guidance except that IP Helpers are preferred and are the Microsoft supported solution. A great starting reference
    is at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preboot_Execution_Environment
    Jason | http://blog.configmgrftw.com
Is there any official Microsoft documentation that outlines why IP Helpers are preferred over scope options?

I just purchased the Mac Mini Server with the intention of replacing Lion Server with Lion for the first hard drive while installing Windows 7 thru Bootcamp on the second hard drive. Is it possible for me to do this? Thanks.

I would use Parallels or VMWare and use the second drive to hold the virtual machine. That way the VM only uses the space that it needs and you can still use the remainder of the drive for other things, not to mention that you would not need to reboot to run windows.
Also Time Machine does not back up a boot camp partition.

  • LRT224 Support for multiple subnets

I am considering purchasing an LRT224, but need help with one thing.
The network I manage has about 200 devices currently, with mixed brands and types of switches, access points, etc, scattered about. It is a small school that has had many different people running IT at it, some not so good, others better. Now I manage it.
We would like to add more devices, but currently we are limited to 254 devices. In the LRT224 manual, it -looks- like you can manually specify the subnet mask, and DHCP server range. For example, could I change the subnet mask to 255.255.252.0, or a /22 subnet, and then specify the DHCP range to be, for example only, 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.4.254, for 1024 total addresses? I want to do this without using VLANs, because I'm unsure if any of out switches support VLAN tagging, and I have zero experience with VLANs.
    Please let me know, thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

For site-to-site IPsec VPN tunnels, LRT224 supports subnet masks larger than 255.255.255.0. However the local subnets on the LAN side of LRT224 are limited to a class C subnet per VLAN.

My MacOS10.7.3 server coordinates a small subnet of 100 macs. To access the internet as provided by the larger organisation we must go through a proxy server. Unfortunately the proxy server keeps asking for authentication and checking the Remember This Password barely helps. Any tips would be appreciated.

  • Using JSONscriptRequest for cross domain calls?

    Hi,
Looking through the REST SDK I see mention of the "JSONscriptRequest class" but I don't find much else about it.
Is this a jsonp callback and how can it be used?
    Thanks

    Hi Willem,
I've never heard of this "JSONscriptRequest class", but as far as I know, the REST SDK doesn't support JSONP callbacks or JSONP in general.
For cross domain request, you'll find CORS settings on your WebApplicationContainer Server settings page in the CMC, but I'm not sure how / if they work.
    Hope that helps.

OS X installers have always been fairly specific, hardware-wise. I haven't read anything reflecting that situation with the Recovery HD, so it may be that the Recovery HD created for the MacBook Pro does not have the necessary drivers for the Mac Pro. Obviously, nothing definitive here, but a possibility.

  • RV320: Need to use as gateway for multiple subnets

We just purchased an RV320 as a replacement/upgrade to an RV042. Our Internet connection was upgraded to 200Mbps and the RV042 wouldn't handle that throughput.
Our internal network has 4 subnets, all connected via a layer 3 switch. The RV320 is connected to one of those subnets and is the default gateway for the entire network.
The RV042 had a "multiple subnets" setting that allowed it to perform NAT for the directly connected subnet and the other 3 subnets in our network. We would just add the other networks to the list in the RV042 and everything was fine.
The RV320 doesn't seem to have the same functionality (or am I missing something?). It looks like there is some sort of multiple subnet support, but when we try to add another subnet the interface seems to be asking us to define a single IP address in that subnet (an IP address for the router?) as if all subnets will be directly attached to the router using VLANs (which is not the case in our network).
We can set up the "advanced routing" option to define the other 3 internal subnets and how to route to them, etc. but will the RV320 perform NAT for the other subnets without any adidtional configuration?
Can anyone shed any light on this?
    Many thanks!

    Precept,
My name is Ismael, iam with Small Business Support Center. I like to start by asking is there a  particular reason that the switch is handling Layer 3/or DHCP? Normally when an RV042 is implemented you would need a Layer 3 switch as the RV042 only supports one DHCP scope. In addition all The RV0XX series does not support 802.1q VLAN.
With RV320 you can setup multiple subnets under advance routing and still allow for it to pass DHCP for all of your 4 subnets and create 801.2q Vlan subinterfaces . Setting RV320 in this manner can create an ease in managing the network.
If you are considering the RV320 to do Layer 3 / DHCP simply create your 4 Vlans or subnets. Add them to the DHCP scope and enable DHCP server for all subnets. Switch would have to be configured to Layer 2 for this to work.  The link below is a knowledge portal that could assist in creating DHCP and Vlans. Hope this helps you.
