BORM IDs in CRM

Question

I am working on an assignment where I have to move BORM records across distributed implementations of the CRM application through integrations. In doing this I have to make sure that the BORM IDs never conflict on any of the instances.
Although the BORM IDs are created by concatenating timestamps upto nano-seconds, there is still a theoretical possibility of IDs conflicting when I move data across databases. I want to eliminate even that possibility.
In the function which generates the UID, there is a provision of adding the node address (which is nothing but the mac-address of the machine's network card, which is guaranteed to be unique);
In GetUiD() the tools function UuidGen() is being used which returns a concatenation of timestamp & node-address; but in the GetUID() on FUNCLIB_BO_CUST.UUID.FieldFormula the node-address is being stripped off...
I am not able to understand why has this been done. And are there any implications if I enable the node address back again.

PS: The developers of this function have indeed put a comment on this function saying "CRM only needs a unique identifier not a universally unique identifier so we can drop the node address section which is
the last 12 characters"
But they fell short of explaining why CRM does not need a universally unique identifier..
