Brand new T440p freezing on shutdown - happening on multiple identical laptops

I purchase Lenovo laptops for my employees at work.
Just ordered 2 brand new T440P laptops. Both machines are exhibiting the same behavior.
Turned on first machine, ran windows Update + did firmware update. Machine restarts after firmware update (automatically), but it just hangs at the ThinkPad wallpaper (no icons/desktop/mouse). Since I did a firmware update, left the machine there for 24+ hours before doing a hard shutdown. It continued to sit there over the 24 hours, had to eventually do a hard shutdown. Machine is obviously bricked because the firmware did not update correctly.
Turned on the second machine, booted into Windows for the fist time, started a clean shut down immediately, experiencing the same hang. Hard reset the machine, same thing happens every time.
Is there some issue going on with these machines? Luckily CDW is great about return policies, but this needs to be addressed.

My coworker and I each bought a new T440p, and we are experiencing the exact same problem in both of our machines (freezing on shutdown with the wallpaper showing and nothing else).  I did a clean factory restore on my machine, but the problem still persists.  It probably happens one in every 5 times or so (i.e. very frequently).  The only way to get out of it seems to be by holding down the power button.  Both of our machines are i5 4200M with NVIDIA 730M.  Has anyone tried calling Lenovo about this?

  • Help, Brand New MBP Freezes

Hey, I have now had my brand new 15.4" MBP 2.16 ghz for about 2 days. And I must say I enjoy it quite a bit when it works. I have had a major problem with it however. Anytime I try to do the software update it freezes and the screen goes dark and I get the sign that says I need to restart my MBP, hold down the power button or push the restart button. Unfortunately this problem also happens randomly when i'll be browsing safari, and one other time when i was updating my ipod. Does anyone have any idea why this happens, or what to do about it? Oh in case it matters, it has happened both when it's plugged in and not plugged in. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Nathan

That's ok. It's like a blue screen of death in Windows. Something failed so terribly, it took the OS down with it.
You can see the logs by going to Applications\Utilities\Console. Open up that console, click on logs, and find the panic log. You can select a portion and copy/paste it here.
Best call Apple, though, so they can begin the process of troubleshooting and when that doesn't work, sending you a return label so you can get a swapped computer.
    Good luck.

  • Brand new E5 freezes and restarts often

I recieved the E5 not even two days ago, and I cannot tell you how much frustration I've gone through trying to stop it from freezing and restarting.  It has happened in the menu, in the contact list, just trying to do random things.  Also, it happens on its own, for example I just noticed it restarting while I'm typing this sentence, and I haven't touched it for five minutes.
It is extremely upsetting for a BRAND new phone to be acting like this, and thus far I am extremely displeased with the Nokia brand.  I am not really too tech savvy, but I do know some, so please offer me suggestions and help with how to get this phone running optimally.  Thanks.

I can sympathize, I'm having exactly the same problem. infact if you check the forum there are a number of people having similar issues with this model. My problems have been going on for over a month now. Issues started 3 days after getting the phone, right after getting the last of various updates sent to the phone by my network provider. Initially I spoke with the provider  (Orange) who advised me to take it to my closest Nokia Care centre but haven't had the time due to work and still have my old (working) Handset. Have also noted from other posts that many have not had the issues solved even after taking the Handset to the care center for repair.
Have done the removal of battery and set the phone back to it's original factory settings but issues continued. Freezing / Restarting was initially happening only every 3-4 days but has gradually got worse. However, last week had message on the phone saying a software update was available to update via PC, whilst doing so phone had to restart but failed to turn back on which resulted in a failed update. Now, though phone can turn on it only does so for 5-10 mins at a time and only does so if I keep it in temperatures lower than 15 degrees celcius (I won't bore you with how I figured that out!). So basically I can only use it outdoors or if I put it in a fridge. Also the nokia software updaters now seem to think the phone has been updated even though it failed. With the number of issues many people are having with this phone I hope nokia are trying their best to rectify the issues. It is extremely frustrating as this brand new phone is basically unusable. Hopefully I can get it to a care center in the next few days but I'm not very confident they will fix it permanently.

  • Brand New Tseries, freezes constantly.

I receieved my Tseries laptop about a week ago and every time I've used it it freezes (can still move mouse and minimize applications, but they won't respond.)  It happens 5 or so times a day and appears to happen randomly.  I'm thinking it may be a Vista problem.  I've looked around online but havent been able to find an answer that works.  I'd love to be able to use my brand new laptop, but it never works for long before I need to restart!

    OMG,
Thank god someone else is having the same issues as me (not that I am happy that you are having isses but that it’s more than just my laptop). My laptop is brand new and is as follows
    Vista Ultimate SP1
    Core 2 T9300
    4 gigs memory
    Intel Turbo memory
    Nvidia Quadro NVS 140M
NOT using Norton (and no I don’t have a virus)
    All Drivers are updated
I have had the same issues with my laptop “freezing” up and not responding. It is only a partial freeze though and I can still click on the start menu and do the CTRL + ALT + DEL and try and restart. The problem is that most of the time I try and do anything else while the one program is frozen (as in clicking another program or trying to shut down the frozen one) then everything freezes and the computer will not recover unless I shut down the power by holding the power button. I have notice two things, 1 – it always freezes when it is NOT connected to a power supply (running from battery) and 2 – it is not related to any one program of software. I have had it happen to Word and to windows programs. Now it wasn’t much of an issue until one day I corrupted a windows startup file that I was unable to recover from. A complete reformat was needed to correct it and when I called Lenovo for support all I was told (Rudely) “we do not cover software issues” and they weren’t even interested in listening to the issues I was having. I almost jumped off a bridge because I lost days of un-recoverable work that I spent 2 weeks trying to recover and replace. Rather disappointed since Lenovo has a good rating with consumer reports. I now run Acronis and do a regular backup on a daily basis. I do this because my laptop continuously freezes and sometimes it won’t start back up and I have to reinstall windows again (this has happened at least 5 times in the several months I have owned my laptop).  Since this issue has started I warned my company about the issue and the way that tech support just blew me off. Rather sad for Lenovo because we were looking to upgrade all of our employees to laptops and ended up purchasing them through Dell. (No problems so far)
If anyone has any thought as to a fix for this it would be a tremendous help since I have already devoted hours of my life to fixing this problem.

  • HP Desktop Pavillion p6320y Brand new Crash Freeze

I purchased this HP Pavillion PC from best Buy Chula Vista on March 2010
The Desktop PC we bought is an HP Pavillion P6320y
The problem that occurs is that the computer keeps freezing, the mouse stops moving and then all the programs. Stops all programs, turns to a grey screen., cannot restart unless you turn off the power.
I started noticing the problem when my mouse started to move choppy a few days ago, and then the windows ( in the quick view) do not smoothly pop up anymore
Sometimes when I do restart I get this message  “insert Boot media in selected Boot device and press a key”  But nothing happens or rather the message keeps repeating itself and I need to keep the PC off power for 15 mins to try again
I check all the cables to make sure they are proerly connected. The Desktop is also carefully cleaned to make sure there is no dust buildup
I do not have any funny programs installed. I only browse facebook, Youtube, yahoo, Gmail.   I have Yahoo messenger, MSN Messenger and one game called Ragnarok Online but that game is an old game that doent need any crazy specs.
One time the problem occured as i was watching a youtube video on full screen and it stoped on full screen and just froze and faded to a grey/white screen. I restarted and it did it again when browsing Facebook.
I have heard of instances that I could have purchased a lemon. The 2nd day that I had the laptop, we had issues with the cables and it not booting properly. however that was resolved. But now the problem has gotten worse and the PC is brand new.
Please help. Can I have this returned? Refurbished/replaced?
    Thank you

Hi, The mouse appearing to go slow may be from stuff that gets into the mouse laser or from a virus or from something of a reason like software problem or else. The grey white screen I can relate to having that happen once when I was playing a game on another hp pavilion computer and the screen went grey and white and I had to restart it to make it work, that must appear when there is a problem with the video card and the video card can't respond to the problem so the video card crashes. It appears it might have something to do with the hard drive. It might be related to a virus or so. Make sure you have the latest video card update and there are free anti-virus programs like Comodo Antivirus you can download for free and update + have it scan your computer for viruses. It might be something PSU related like failing PSU connectors or a problem with the cables connected to the hard drive, try swapping or replacing the cables, try replacing the PSU with a good PSU u know is not failing + the hard drive, It appears the hard drive is crashing the system for a reason or another or a virus. Try resetting the bios, make sure everything is properly connected correctly. If the computer doesn't respond when hitting a key after the message it appears that there is a problem between the communication between the hard drive and the computer, Try putting swapped cables in another connector on the motherboard and connect it to the hard drive. It's either the motherboard cable connector, the cable connector or the hard drive connector or the PSU power plug or the PSU itself or a virus. Best luck for you and your computer.

  • Brand new iMac freezes constantly! Updates aren't helping!

    Hello everyone,
This past Sunday I bought a brand new iMac intel Core 2 Duo with a 250 GB HDD and 1 GB of RAM. At home I set it up with my SAMSUNG 1080p 22" monitor, Apple bluetooth Keyboard and mightymouse, and a Western Digital 350 GB HDD hooked up via USB. I was excited to finally jump on the intel-based Mac bandwagon, as well as experience dual monitors for the first time.
That was Sunday. Tuesday evening I was watching "Rome" on itunes on my Samsung monitor while surfing the web with Omniweb on the iMac monitor. All of sudden, everything locked up. I was able to move my cursor, but nothing responeded to my clicking. I hard booted the system and loaded everything I had going again, and sure enough, it locked up a few moments later. I ran system update, updated everything, then restarted. Time went by and although not immediatly, later that night it froze up on me again.
Fast forward to last nite, and the freezing reached and all time high. 5 times. Each time was when I had a browser open in my iMac window and I had Quicktime playing in my Samsung monitor. I was watching a sports program, with the player fit to the screen.
I have read many posts about intel iMacs freezing late last year, but there was a firmware update that evidently fixed that. I have this update installed, and I have had no luck. I have even contacted Apple Care via phone where I got instructed to unplug everything, plug it back in, start in safe mode, and delete cache. That didn't help me out at all. Am I right insuspecting I have a faulty Video card? I just ordered 4GB of RAM, could this be a RAM issue?

When diagnostics are run on a freezing computer and nothing shows, I'll put the program into a testing loop because this means one of two things: the issue is heat related so running the diagnostics several more times will bring on the heat so that the issue shows up or the installed RAM is marginal, just flaky enough to show up now and again but not so far off that a run through of the memory test catches it on the first run.
As I said in my original post, memory is always a suspect in a freezing or kernel panicking computer. And it does tend to top my list. But from what you describe I'm not quite willing to say, "Why don't you just wait until the RAM upgrade arrives?"

  • Brand New iMac freezes when external display connected

I'm having an issue where when I plug my Apple VGA adapter to my brand new iMac, it completely freezes. As soon as I unplug the adapter, it unfreezes. Also, if I plug in the adapter without the vga adapter, it does not freeze until I plug a vga cable into the adapter. Can anyone help me with this one?

Turns out that the solution is patience. After allowing the iMac to sit frozen for some time, it eventually starts working.

  • New iMac Freezing on Shutdown

I got a new 21.5" (standard 500GB storage, 4 GB RAM) iMac about three weeks ago, and with the exception of the first time I shut it down, it freezes on the blue blue screen with the spinning wheel every time I attempt to shut it down. I eventually give up and manually turn it off using the power button.
I quit all programs before shutdown and have checked the Activity Monitor to see if something is still running, although I have to admit I'm not quite sure what all of the information in Activity Monitor really means. I use several external hard drives and use a USB to charge my BlackBerry, but ejecting and unplugging all devices before shutdown has made no difference with the freezing up.
The only additional software I've installed since purchasing the iMac is Photoshop CS5, Blackberry desktop manager and Microsoft Office. I don't believe it's the Blackberry software that's causing a problem because it began freezing on shutdown even before I downloaded that.
What could be causing this problem? Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to Discussions - Whatever is causing the problem, you are still covered by Apple Care, so call them and have them deal with it. Their number is 800-275-2273 and they will take care of you. By the way, you have posted in the iMac G5 Forum, which is for PPCs, you have an intel machine.
    Good luck,

  • My brand new ipad freezes completly on safari

I have a brand new ipad. Safari won't work at all. Frozen. Can cooneect to web through Istore and wifi. tried restoring factory setting. makes no difference?

Quit Safari completely and restart the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Quit/close open apps by double tapping the home button and the task bar will appear with all of you recent/open apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner to close the apps. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
If that didn't help - clear Safari and restart.
Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History, Cookies and Data. Restart the iPad. Restart the iPad by holding down on the sleep button until the red slider appears and then slide to shut off. To power up hold the sleep button until the Apple logo appears and let go of the button.
A third thing that you can try is to reset your iPad.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons.

  • Brand New Macbook Freezing / Faulty Adapter

Hopefully someone out there can help me..
I was given my Macbook Pro as a gift from the parents back in October last year. I remember it freezing on the first or second day of having it, but anyway.. since then it has been fine, until now!
About a month ago, I had my Macbook on the bed & I actually dropped it onto the floor [it worked fine] however, the magsafe charger has been faulty since. I have to wiggle it about to get the light to stay green/orange & sometimes it flickers faintly & the icon switches from charging to just normal on screen. Can someone tell me if I can get a new charger from the Apple store? I have the standard 1yr Warranty.
The other problem, which ONLY occurred this last 2 weeks is that my Macbook will just freeze. No wheel, it will just show the cursor where I last had it & NOTHING will work. I have to hold down the power until it switches off. I send a report to Apple [whatever this means] and sometimes it'll just freeze again a few minutes after. It has even froze on the actual loading up screen [with the white apple/loading icon]. Most of the time my Macbook freezes, I don't even have ANYTHING open.. which I'm guessing is bad news! I used to play my Sims 3 game smoothly before, however, now it also freezes a couple of minutes into it - so I've given that up!
I keep sending these reports & when I restart my Mac, about 5 minutes of using it [IF I'm lucky not to have the thing freeze on me] I'll get the ''You need to restart your computer'' message - and this also, just freezes up my screen. I was sending an e-mail earlier & half way through writing it, it happened & I lost everything! There is NO overheating/unusual noises.. the only time my mac heats up is when I'm using Final Cut / Sims, but even then it doesn't heat up more than usual..
I'm getting annoyed now because I have 2 x 3500 word essays to write & it is very annoying having to autosave every 2 minutes! Help!!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Your Mac should never freeze. There could be any number of causes, and the drop could be a factor. Unfortunately, the 1 year warranty does not cover accidental damage, although you may have homeowner's or renter's that does.
Since the freezing was present before the drop, it could be hardware or software related. A good place to start might be with the Apple Hardware Test, which is located on one of the gray system discs that originally came with the computer. Run the extended version if you can.
If the AHT runs to completion, see if it gives you any error codes that would indicate a hardware problem. If you get any, call Apple and tell them. Error codes indicate a hardware problem which Apple hopefully will be able to fix under your 1 year warranty.
If you cannot even run the AHT because your Mac freezes, then that in itself indicates some sort of a hardware problem, and again, you will need to call Apple about it and see if you can arrange for repair.
It's possible that the freezing and the kernel panic message you received may relate to your RAM not being well seated, so you might want to try reseating it. Instructions will be in your owners manual.
Here is a guide for troubleshooting kernel panics:
    http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/kernelpanics.html
If none of this has helped, you might want to try reinstalling the OS.
As for the MagSafe adaptor, you want to try a different one just to be sure the damage is to the adaptor and not to the port in the computer. Here is a link for troubleshooting these:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1713
Do you have access to an Apple Store? If so, it might be quickest to make an appointment at the genius bar and get them to help you with this. They have a hardware test they can run from the store feed, and they would know what to check.
    Good luck!

  • Serious issues with brand new T440p

    Hello everypone,
I recently was supplied with a T440p for work. The laptop has some serious issues that neither I nor my colleague from IT could solve. So before we send it back I would like to try the forum because I really can't wait another couple of weeks for a new machine (I desperately need it for work).
The laptop works fine when it is in the docking station, but I can't use it in battery mode. It crashes/restarts after a couple of minutes. Sometimes I don't even get to the log in screen. It will take me to this white-text-on-black-screen page where I can choose if I want to run Windows (7 Professional) in safe mode or normally. This crash/restart issue does not persist in safe mode, but I can't really work in safe mode.
Another issue is that the laptop sometimes takes a very long time to restart or to shut down. It just shows the empty desktop without all the shortcuts and the task bar for some time and then finally logs off after give or take five minutes. After that, the restarting works fine. But it's really annoying.
Another thing was that the laptop could not wake up properly from sleep or hibernation mode. It would crash/restart every time (like described above). I kind of solved the problem by telling the laptop to never go to sleep or hibernation mode. After ten minutes there would just be a screen saver now.
I am convinced that all this is not caused by conflicting software. I only installed very few programs yet (mostly office programs and Skype). Naturally all the Windows Updates (and Lenovo Updates) have been installed so far, too.
Here is what I did so far:
    - Ran all tests (extended version) in the Lenovo solution center, all good, no warnings whatsoever
    - Ran all BIOS tests, same here
    - Googled for T440p issues and found out about the problems with the driver for the finger print reader, so I installed the latest version of it, did not solve the problems
    - Installed a BIOS update (from the Lenovo page), did not solve the problems
So I don't have any idea on how to solve this. I know my way around computers, but I am definitely no IT guy, so I hope you can suggest some things I have not tried yet. I rather would fix this Laptop than waiting for a new one...
    Cheers and thanks in advance
    Tim

Not much to do beside submitting support / warranty claim. I guess systemboard will be replaced.
Edit: OTH I have heard certain windows update may cause issues, so maybe try to revert to restore point before updates and check if issue remains ...

  • Are Brand New iMacs Freezing?

I'm soon going to be buying a new 24" 2.8GHz iMac, and am wondering if anyone who's purchased from Apple online in the last couple of weeks has experienced the freezing issues others in this forum are reporting?

    Pop,
I just did a quick scan of Apple's 14 day return policy, and gotta wonder about a couple of the restrictions in it:
    1. If we purchase, say, a 24" 2.8GHz iMac with a 750GB disk drive, this would seem to me to be a "made to order" computer and would not be eligible for the 14 day return. Because it's a made to order item, AppleCare would kick in.
    2. I chuckled a bit when I read that Apple would exchange an unopened computer. After scratching my head, I cannot come up with a scenario whereby someone would exchange an unopened computer!
Below is the Apple return policy copied from their web site:
    Return and Refund Policy
If you are not satisfied with your Apple purchase of a product, please call 1-800-676-2775 for a Return Material Authorization (RMA) request within 14 calendar days of the receipt of the product. Configure-to-order, personalized or other customized products may not be returned for refund or exchange under any circumstances unless such product is Dead on Arrival (see the section below for more detailed information on such Dead on Arrival products). If the item is returnable and you send it back to us unopened in the original box, Apple will exchange it or offer you a refund based on your original method of payment. You must return the product to the Apple warehouse within 14 calendar days of the issuance of the RMA. All products must be packed in the original, unmarked packaging including any accessories, manuals, documentation and registration that shipped with the product. Apple will assess a 10% restocking fee on any opened hardware or accessory. If you purchased your order using an Apple Business Lease, Apple may ask you to provide a major credit card (Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover) so Apple can assess the 10% restocking fee.
Please note that Apple does not permit the return of or offer refunds for the following products:
Product that is custom configured to your specifications, including personalized products

  • Brand New Macbook Freezes On Start Up!

i had to make a new thread for this
just got my macbook last week
and now it freezes when i turn it on
it shows the first grey apple logo screen
and then goes to the second blue screen and freezes
i have tried everything in the manual to resolve this, but nothing
i know if i reinstall the OS that will probably fix it, but it's just a **** hassle
i am a new user, and this is not very promising of apple
should i reinstall or go to the apple store and demand a new one and complain like a mad man?

    Hi danno2022!
If you just purchased your machine, it's still with the return policy window. Where did you purchase it from? I'd recommend taking it back to the Apple store you bought it from (if you did), have a Genius take a look at the issue, verify it and then offer a solution. That solution may involve a replacement, but it'll be there discretion (obviously).
Did you recently install anything or run any updates? Was the machine functioning fine before the update(s) only to exhibit this issue afterwards?
As for the "complain like a mad man" approach, as someone who use to work in retail... you may wish to slightly alter your plan. While you're no doubt upset and disappointed, which I don't blame you, going in to chew someone's head off when all they're trying to do is "help you" is a pretty tough scenario. I took care of everyone that I could, when I could, but it was always easier and quicker to ensure the people that were cool and level headed got resolved. Sometimes the "mad man" just cannot be appeased, despite my best efforts. Food for thought!

  • Brand new Nano freezes on songs.  Have to reset every time I use it.

I bought a new 2 Gig Nano last month. Nearly every time I play music, it freezes before starting the first song. I have to reset it (holding down the center and top buttons) to get it started again. After the reset, it works fine.
Any suggestions? Should I bring it back to the Apple Store?

    Try a restore first.
