Broken functionality after update (gnome, pam, glib2, systemd, etc.)

I upgraded my system yesterday after going for a month or two without updates and a ton of authentication-related stuff broke. Here are some of the issues/symptoms I'm currently experiencing:
Seeing this message in journalctl:
May 22 13:13:50 deepspace1 slim[203]: pam_loginuid(slim:session): set_loginuid failed
Pulseaudio is not started when logged into GNOME; aplay does not list any cards when invoked by my user:
[mcmlxxxvi@deepspace1 ~]$ aplay -l
aplay: device_list:268: no soundcards found...
[mcmlxxxvi@deepspace1 ~]$ sudo aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: ALC662 rev1 Analog [ALC662 rev1 Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
When I start pulseaudio manually, it only lists the dummy output.
USB sticks no longer auto-mount
I had been using GNOME 3 on forced fallback and logging in through SLiM.
I tried to upgrade libreoffice, which made me upgrade glib2 (to 2.36.2-1), which caused some other problems (pnglib, etc.) so eventually I upgraded everything (including kernel, systemd, pam (to 1.1.6-3) and gnome (to 3.8)) without rebooting. A couple of hours later I was suddenly thrown out of my session and saw something about some journaling/logging utility being passed too large a block (cannot find it in the logs at the moment) on the console. I rebooted and after logging in, gnome-session-failed (the "Oh no" screen) was started. GNOME started successfully when I logged in as root.
Googling around, some threads on here and based on the PAM message above, I tried to downgrade glib2 (to 2.36.1-3, 2.34.3-1, 2.34.2-2 and 2.32.4-1), to upgrade pam (to 1.1.6-4, which had appeared in the meantime) and then downgrade it (back to 1.1.6-3 and then to 1.1.6-1).
glib2 downgrade led to nowhere - later versions led to gnome-session-failed, while with earlier ones GNOME would not start at all). Downgrading pam led me to a situation where I received a "Login incorrect" after entering the username (both console & SLiM) which I had to fix through init=/bin/bash .
Following the advice here I cleared the hidden GNOME files and was finally able to log in (default mode, not fallback). Enabling fallback via gsettings (gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.session session-name gnome) brought back gnome-session-failed.
So I'm led to believe that I originally had 2 problems: fallback mode, which I read had been disabled, and the authentication problem. I'm currently struggling with the latter and would like help on how to approach the situation.
I'm not sure which logs would be needed for troubleshooting, and I'm still quite clumsy with journalctl, but will provide any logs requested.

You should *never* do partial upgrades.  There is a reason why everywhere you see people saying that "partial upgrades are not supported".
I am not sure how you can be "clumsy with journalctl".  As far as its most basic functionality, it is pretty darn straight forward.  Though that is assuming you are willing to do a quick read of the man page... or even the output of "--help".

  • [Solved] Severely broken system after update

I need help with system that doesn't boot after update.
I tried to make pacman -Syu on a system which was not updated since 2010 xmass... probably being overwhelmed by number of issues I did something wrong, but now the system is in a very bad state.
I think that the main issue was glibc update. I followed the instruction to install all other packages before glibc, but every second package was complaining about glibc (although they all updated). Then pacman became broken, but I solved this and finally everything got updated.
Everything looked fine right after update, but now the system is "unable to find root device" on boot.
I tried to boot with recent arch usb stick (cd drive is broken in the computer), but it doesn't boot (reboots right after "loading archiso.img"). I managed to boot with ubuntu usb stick. I chrooted to my arch partition using these instructions:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Chroot#Change_root
then, following pacman wiki I reinstalled linux, mkinitcpio and systemd.
It didn't help. The last thing I can think of is to reinstall all packages via chroot. Is there any handy way to do this, taking into account that some packages could have been installed from AUR (I don't care about them at this point, but I wouldn't like this to stop me from reinstalling all other packages)?
    Any other ideas?

It's not a solution since arch installation usb stick doesn't work for me, as I mentioned above. I must either make this installation work, or move to ubuntu (gah!)
    edit:
I managed to boot. After the error message at the beginning I'm left with "you can type exit to continue booting, but it will most likely fail"... it doesn't fail, and system appears to be working normally (well, except some error about consolekit when X is starting, probably unrelated).
Now the question is how to avoid this error message at the beginning...

I tried to generate and use new xorg.conf with "Xorg configure" but it didn't help. I tried the copy back the deleted locale.sh file, but it didn;t help either. When I deleted the corg.conf, the starting process was successfull in way I got to gdm login window, but I was unable to login due to infunction keyboard and mouse also. Did somebody also have or had the problem like this? Can somebody help?
    Thanks

For better investigation I add also "messages.log". I do not have the command "xorgcfg" available on my system. As I understood from "x.org.wiki" the xorgcfg command is just the graphic configuration tool with same function as Xorg -configure.

  • Loss of Photoshop functionality after update

Yesterday I updated  Photoshop as suggested in a message on my Creative Cloud.  Since the update, much of the functionality inside of Photoshop has been lost from the cloning tool, filters e.g. Camera Raw, saving the file etc etc.  I repeatedly get the message "Could not complete your request because of a program error."  Prior to the update I had no issues with running Photoshop CC on my computer.
    System:  IMAC
    Operating System : OS 10.8.3
Graphics : AMD Radeon HD 6770M 512 MG
    Memory : 16 GB
I have uninstalled and reinstalled from Cloud ... to no avail and after a day of reading forums and trying many different options I just cannot get to the bottom of the problem.
Can anyone advise how do I revert back to the version before the update.  Everything worked perfectly fine in that version.
    Thank you

Thank you Mylenium for your quick response.
Ran the cleaner tool and reinstalled.  Everything seemed to work for about 5 minutes and now it is again back to my original porblem with the "Could not complete your request because of a program error".
So unfortunately I am back to square 1 trying to find a solution.

  • Run function after updating values

I'm writing a fairly basic plugin where I need to have a function run after the values of a point have been updated.
I'm doing this to change the point's values:
    params[POINT]->u.td.x_value = FLOAT2FIX(pointX);
    params[POINT]->u.td.y_value = FLOAT2FIX(pointY);
    params[POINT]->uu.change_flags = PF_ChangeFlag_CHANGED_VALUE;
This works fine for updating the values, however any code that goes after this block is run before the values actually change. Is there a way to force the change to happen after I have set the new values or is there somewhere else I can put the function so that it will be run after the values are actually changed?

Hi Jesse Toula! welcome to the forum!
if you want the change to be instantaneous, you can use AEGP_SetStreamValue() instead of the method you're using.
there is no function that is guaranteed to be called after you change the values.
UPDATE_PARAMS_UI might get called, and also a render call is likely.
you can set a flag in the sequence data to notify yourself of pos-t change operations that need to take place in such occurrences.
personally, i'd go with the AEGP_SetStreamValue() solution.

  • 'Today' button ceased to function after update.

Is it just me or the 'Today' button stopped working after the recent update?

I found that hiding the iCal window instead of closing it will keep the Today button functional. Just hope I remember not to touch that little red button. (Restarting iCal restores the function.) The search function will also keep on working as long as you do not close the window. Somehow these functions "die" with the window and are not restarted when a new window is created. Definitely not the quality of programming I was becoming used to with Apple.

  • [WORKAROUND] After update: gnome-settings-daemon can't find dbus?

    Hey all,
first of all, the problem started after the update yesterday. At the moment, my system is up-to-date without any testing packages. My dbus is started in /etc/rc.conf by the entry of hal. It certainly runs according to `ps ax`. But now after login to gnome it takes some minutes (which is longer than usual) and then the following message shows up:
There was an error starting the GNOME Settings Daemon.
Some things, such as themes, sounds, or background settings may not work correctly.
    The last error message was:
Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-sxaWRBhjCI: Connection refused
GNOME will still try to restart the Settings Daemon next time you log in.
The funny thing is, that /tmp/dbus-sxaWRBhjCI does not exist in /tmp, see here:
    andi@hbar> ll /tmp

My gnome session starts anyway but e.g. the panel looks in default style. The funniest thing is in the end, that I can start gnome-settings-daemon in terminal (after gnome started) and everything starts looking as it was. See here:

Can anyone help me in fixing this? Or does anyone experiencing the same problem? Thanks in advance.
Edit: I tried the gnome-session-daemon from testing (and its dependencies), but this caused that gnome did not start at all!

  • Broken ipod after updating!

I updated my daughter's ipod and now it keeps flashing on and off with apple logo. What does this mean? Did I brake it?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • Why does my right click has no function after update to 10.7.2

I have just updated my software to 10.7.2 and it seems that whenever I right-clicked, there is no function to it. Which means I can't compress my documents, etc. Has 10.7.2 disenabled it? Or is it just my mac that is encountering problems?

go to system preferences, then your device. There you'll find the option to right click. if it is off turn it on, if it is on, turn it off and on.
send feedback to apple about this issue if it was on but didn't work.
People have found toggling the option off and on fixes their issue. that and restarting the computer.

  • My Bluetooth will not function after update to iOS 7.0.4

Hi, last night I updated the last update 7.0.4. I have done all the updates before so I know how it should go. Anyway I got a message showing my to plug it into iTunes which I did. iTunes then told me I had to do a system restore (nightmare). Anyway, I did that and uploaded all my apps again.
Now the problem is that my Bluetooth is now an issue. I slide the control panel up from the bottom and can appear to switch it on (the icon turns highlighted). At this point I can even see it is turned on in the settings menu. However no icon appears next to the battery indicator and if I try to search for it using another device it is not there. It seems that the phone thinks it is switched on when it actually isn't. I tried doing a soft reset and turned the Bluetooth on and hey presto the icon appeared! So I thought I had fixed it. But no, if I then turn the Bluetooth off it won't turn on again and the problem returns. Does anyone have any ideas? I can't keep resetting my phone every time I want to turn on my Bluetooth!
    Thanks for any advice.
    Dave

Try a FULL reset. Fingers crossed, if that fails -> a Factory Settings & Updates as required,
then get your info from Your Back Up..
if that fails call Apple Corporate Customer Care.(whether Under or Out of Warranty)

  • [SOLVED] broken libraries after update

I'm getting this error when trying to start akregator:
error while loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libkontactinterface.so.4: invalid ELF header
When I run the file command on /usr/lib there are several files that are identified only as "data" including the one producing the above error.
I think this started after pacman upgraded a lot of kde libraries a few days ago. At the end of a pacman run, ldconfig gives errors such as:
ldconfig: /usr/lib/libkpimtextedit.so is not an ELF file - it has the wrong magic bytes at the start.
Any ideas on what went wrong and how to fix it would be most welcome.
    Last edited by dan34 (2013-11-09 19:22:16)

Yes, this seems to be one of the few times to use --force, but only for the kdepimlibs installation.  It also begs the question, though, of how those files got there.  Did you install any KDE related software manually?  If not, your package database may have been corrupted, which would leave me wanting to check the health of the disk (fscks first, then smartmontools).
Edit: the incorrect elf type would suggest the former: I suspect some libs were manually installed, but the wrong architecture was used.  This might even happen with some "click here to upgrade" crap on some tools if they were running as root.

  • IOS 8.0.2 - loss of music playing functionality after updating

My daughter updated her Iphone 5C with the new 8.0.2 update via iTunes as she was short of memory on her phone and did not want to lose her music and photos.  Following the update she has lost a lot of photos and only some of the music has synchronised and most of this will not play but just keeps skipping to the next song.  She now has a very reduced playlist & is very unhappy!

    Hey alangjed,
Thanks for the question. Let’s begin by first power cycling your device:
Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1430
If the issue persists, it sounds like the Accessibility option “Greyscale” may have been accidecanlly enabled. You can configure this option in Settings > General > Accessibility:
Invert Colors and Grayscale - iPhone
    http://help.apple.com/iphone/8/#/iph3e2e1fb0
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • Lost functionality after update

Received the update yesterday, but now my alarm won't work and LED indicator isn't working either. Is there a fix/setting to this, or a way to undo the update to get back to the old state?

If you havent already done so before the update, back up your information such as pics, music files etc...go in your back up and restore menu in settings and uncheck app restore and app info, then master reset your phone to factory state.  You cannot go back to the previous state, but you can start fresh with a reset phone which will put things back to default.
