Button timeline AS 2.0 problem

Question

I have an .swf called main, inside it has frame animation
including a set of navigation buttons on its own level. The
navigation buttons are inside a movie clip called nav_mc. I dropped
the nav_mc clip into a frame on the main timeline. The navigation
nav_mc movieclip plays fine but when I go to use the buttons in it
they do not function. Inside the actions layer in the nav_mc
movieclip are the button actions they are
int_btn.onRelease = function() {
gotoAndPlay("intel");
id_btn.onRelease = function() {
gotoAndPlay("work");
wk_btn.onRelease = function() {
gotoAndPlay("work");
xfer_btn.onRelease = function() {
gotoAndPlay("best");
the buttons are pointing to frame labels which are on the
main timeline of main.swf
I would think that the swf does not see the GoToandPlay
should n't I be using .root somewhere here?

in main.swf
main timeline has 40 frames with greybox on frame 40
frame name is called greybox
button on stage
on (release) {
gotoAndStop("forty");
works fine
now!
I make movieclip1_mc
inside is button animation (tween)
button action is
on (release) {
gotoAndStop("forty"); (remember (orty is on maintimeline not
clip)
place button on stage in main timeline frame 5 (with stop
action)
play swf click button on stage from movieclip1_mc
WILL NOT WORK.
what is the actionscript use here, are you sure it is _root_
