Cable Modem buy or not

I have Comcast internet and cable with their Motorola modem. I pay $3 a month for that modem. I making a switch to include T-Mobile @ Home with my AEBS, so I will have two routers. Current modem only has one LAN port. I don't know how to configure the two routers with one LAN port. Back to the question, is it better to buy your own cable modem? They're probably better, don't know?

buy a cable modem for 25.00 after the rebate 3.00 a month add's up 25/3 is only 8 after 8 months you'll pretty much pay for it.

  • Slow Cable Modems - Everyone Please Read

I am a Broadcom employee. Broadcom makes cable modem chipsets. Some of these chipsets have a slight design flaw. I am not at liberty to divulge any technical details. However, I can tell you that using a cable modem containing one of these chipsets with your Mac will result in slow internet speeds. Apple is not at fault. I'm sorry to say that fixing these design flaws, which only affect Mac users is not a priority at this time.
I am a Mac user myself and am just as frustrated as you are with incompatible products. This is why I am coming forward and informing you of this problem with our products. Our chipsets are used in almost all of the most popular cable modems. I am including a partial list of the most recent and popular cable modems that use our chipsets which have this problem. I am unable to find any information about older and less popular cable modems. Please understand that I can not and will not divulge any more information. Thank you.
    All Linksys Cable Modems
All Motorola Cable Modems except for the SB5120
    All Scientific Atlanta Cable Modems

Maybe Broadcom can answer the question as to why the Cable modems are slower with Macs with cable modems that do not have TurboDOX.
I have spent hours on numerous forums reading many users complaints and many users solutions from changing DNS to using certain modems.
What I have found is this. All and EVERY cable modem that people have references as working at full speeds on a Mac had 1 thing in common. This 1 this is TurboDOX. I have just completed about four locations where the Macs were slow with Comcast Cable modems. The latest being today with a new installation with a new SB5101 modem. I had the client go and buy a new SB5120 instead. The speed with the 5101 was 2-3Mbps and the speed with the 5120 was 18Mbps!!! yes, 18.
So the question is Why does TurboDOX make a difference with the Mac and not the PC????
Also, another thing to note is that some routers cap the WAN to LAN interface at 6Mbps. For example, the COMSUMER grade Netgear routers (usually the silver plastic ones) are capped at 6, however the Business class routers have varying WAN to LAN speeds ranging from 15Mbps to over 50Mbps.
Our setups for residential clients include either the Netgear FVS114P or the FWG114P VPN Firewall Routers. I have had no issues with Macs being slow with either of these routers and a Motorola SB5120.
    FWIW.
And about the Design Flaw theory, Why did this speed issue just start appearing recently? I saw a site test fine at 6Mbps when it first was installed then recently when we went back to do some work find it testing between 1-3Mbps. Just Odd.

  • Mac Mini not working with AOL Cable modem

    All,
I just bought a brand new Mac Mini but it not working with AOL. My windows XP PC working well with AOL but not with mac mini. Any suggestions? thanks
    Hung

I just found an interesting thing that i brought my mac mini to Apple store where i bought it. Hook up with store cable, it can go thru to internet with out sign on AOL. ALso I can connect to AOL very easy. Brought it back home, I tried to open browser w/o sign on AOL like i did at Apple store, it did not work. I also tried to sign on AOL alone, still not work either. The weird thing is, my other Windows XP computer is working well with AOL. I called customer service of AOL for help, who takes care the Mac computer, asked me to follow the simple procedure that I already did before i called them like unplug cable modem, restart computer...etc. Nothing new, and then they transfered me back and forth between Mac and Windows specilist with no help. I was on phone with them for 2 hours yesterday. I'm very disappoint with AOL customer service with the way they serve the customer. I'm thinking to cancel membership with AOL where i stay with them more than 10 years, and look for another cable or DSL ISP. Now I'm packing the Mac Mini back to box and bring it to Apple store to return it. Next thing, is search around which ISP, who supports the Apple comp. I'm living at Los Angeles area where's very easy to find a local ISP Verizon, Earthlink, Road Runner... I'll be back to buy a new Mac when i get the internet ready. I love Apple computer, and i want to have it.

  • WRT54GS with Mac OS 10.6.8 and RCN cable modem not working

    Hello,
I have a Linksys WRT54GS, version 6 with Mac OS X (version 10.6.8) hooked up to a Scientific Atlantic cable modem, with RCN as the ISP.
Recently, RCN had some network issues, and so I had to power down and reset my modem. The modem is working fine now -- no problems at all when the Mac is connected direclty to the modem.
The router's network is OK in that I can connect the Mac wirelessly to the network, but I can't connect to the internet through the router (through neither the wireless or wired connection).
I have downloaded the latest firmware update for the router, following the Linksys site instructions, but this has not helped me solve the problem.
Does anyone have any advice as to what I should do? I did call Linksys tech support on the advice of RCN, and they said that the router does appear to be working (power, WLAN, and Internet lights are on), but they would be charging me nearly the cost of a new router to fix the problem.
    Any advice would be appreciated!

Since you upgraded the Router WRT54GS with the latest firmware so once reset the Router and power cycle the whole network… Then connect the Modem with Linksys Router on the Internet Port and then connect any one computer to any one of the Ethernet port on the Router [Numbered – 1, 2, 3 and 4]… Let me know the RCN connection is a DSL connection or cable connection…
So if you have a DSL connection you can refer to this link:
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&login=1&vw=1&app=search&articleid=4020&userrole=Linksy...
So if you have a Cable Internet Connection you can refer to this link:
    http://www6.nohold.net/Cisco2/ukp.aspx?pid=93&vw=1&articleid=3686
As far as the wireless is concern:
    # Open up the browser and on the address bar type 192.168.1.1 that will open up the Router setup page…
    # Then Click on wireless Tab create the Wireless Network Name SSID and select the channel to 6, 9, and 11… Click Save Settings...
    # Then Click on Wireless Security sub tab and select the security mode and provide the password as per the requirement… Click Save Settings...
After doing the settings try to connect the preferred network on the wireless devices and check the connectivity….

I have OS 10.8.2 and use wireless at home just fine.
When I visit a friend with only a cable modem internet my Mac Book Pro will not connect.
I see that the Mac Book Pro is picking up the internet when I check the internet preference section but it will not open Safari.
What do I need to do connect via a cable modem?

You need to power off the modem for 15-30 seconds, then power back up and then connect. The modem is remembering the last connection (your friend).

    Hello:
This article will give you basic guidance.

  • I receive a not connected to the internet message several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via cable modem.. When I input my password to enter network preferences, the connection re-establishes.

I receive a "not connected to the internet message" several times daily on my iMac connected via airport to a time capsule which accesses the internet via a cable modem. Software/firmware is up to date on the iMac (OSX 10.6.8)  and Tme Capsule(7.5.2). Browser is Safari 5.1.
When I input my password at the prompt to enter network preferences, all the lights go green (ie... ethernet, ISP etc.) and the connection re-establishes immediately and states "the connection appears to be working normally".
It more of a nuisance than anything and seems to have started ocurring over the past couple of months. I also have a windows XP box also connected to the same cable modem that I never have internet connectivity issues with. I've verified all the physical aspects of the connections and can't see any evidence of any actual drops in the modem logs. I suspect it is just an intermittent communication loss between the Imac and the Time Capsule, but I am not very familiar with Mac equipment yet.
Just wondering if anyone has experienced a similar problem and what you did (if anything) to resolve it?
    Thanks.

The AirPort Express will connect to your existing wireless network if the network is using WPA2 Personal or WPA/WPA2 Personal wireless security settings.
So, it can join the network as a client and then provide an Ethernet signal to your Time Capsule.
Be sure to configure the Time Capsule to operate in Bridge Mode so that it will be operating on the same network.

  • HP P1102w Wireless Printer will not pair with a Motorola SBG6782-AC Wireless Cable Modem Gateway

I previously had AT&T U-verse Internet using an Arris IPDSL NVG510 Wireless Modem Gateway.  My HP Laptop running Windows 8.1 and the HP LasrJet Pro P1102w Wireless Prnter routinely  & automatically connected to the NVG510 Wireless Network  without any problems over the past two years, and the wireless Printer worked without problems. I recently replaced the AT&T U-verse Internet connection with a 25 Mbs Comcast Xfinity Intrnet connection, using a Motorola Arris SURFboard SBG6782-AC Wireless Cable Modem Gateway.   My HP Laptop running Win 8.1 Pro connects to the Network and accesses the Internet with no problems what-so-ever;  However,  the HP LaserJet Pro P1102w wireless Printer does connect to the Wireless network and I cannot Print at all from my laptop. I have tried all the P1102w Wireless Printer Setup suggestions from the HP Printer Support Site, but to no avail.  I have also updated the Printer Firmware and Loaded the latest Full Product Installation & Driver Software.  I have tried and re-tried these suggestions over the last two days, but with no luck. I would greatly appreciately any help from the  experts  in this Forum.  to get the printer to work wirelessly, since we also  wirelessly print to this printer from  IPads and other wireless laptops.

Hi , I see that you are having issues connecting the printer to the new router. I would like to help you. I would reset the printer first to clear out any previous network settings.
Turn the printer off, hold down the wireless button and cancel (x button) while turning the printer back on and don't release the two buttons until the printer stops making noise. Print out a configuration report and make sure the SSID and IP address are cleared.
Printing a Configuration Page. If the network name has any spaces or special characters, the printer may not recognize it. The printer is only capable of sending/receiving in the 2.4 ghz band. If it is set to 5 GHZ network you may need to change to 2.4 ghz. (rename the 5 ghz or shut it off)
The WPA key setting needs to be on AES to work correctly not TKIP.Multi casting needs to be turned on.
Firewall on router has to have open ports for printer.
If you have Mac Filtering you need to give printer hardware address from Configuration page. You might need to contact your router company for further assistance to check those settings. Try running the Wireless Configuration Wizard from the HP software to configure the printer over the network. If you appreciate my efforts, please click the 'Thumbs up' button below. If you have any issues, please let me know what steps you have taken and the results. Thank You.

  • Cannot see Mac Mini Server from Internet: DynDNS alias gets thru cable modem to wireless router, not to the Mac Mini. How to configure?

I want to make my Mac Mini Server (Lion) visible to the Internet from my home LAN. I have followed the Lion server install wizards and also set up a dynamic DNS at DynDNS.com.
When I enter the Internet address with the proper alias from a web browser, I get dumped into the admin screen of the Linksys wireless router WRT300N. Hint: the WRT300N provides DHCP for the LAN, not the cable modem providing DHCP. The WRT300N has DDNS service set up. NAT and RIP are disabled. The Mac Mini DHCP is reserved.
Suggestions? I could use the Motorola Surfboard SB6121 to provide DHCP but have hesitations.
Point me to the right discussion/article and get me back on track, please.

This sounds like a simple port forwarding issue, but I don't understand your LAN setup.
The WRT300N has DDNS service set up. NAT and RIP are disabled.
The chances are, you're running NAT somewhere in your network. If not the WRT then what? If it's your cable modem then you must have port forwarding configured on the cable modem, and that's where you need to focus - change the port forwarding to point to your Mac Mini's address rather than the WRT.
HOWEVER, it is far more common to have the wireless router perform NAT and DHCP, which is why I question your setup.
    Not directly related, but:
The Mac Mini DHCP is reserved
Nix this. Your server should be configured manually, with a static IP address, not DHCP, even with a reservation in the DHCP server. The only advantage of DHCP is for dynamic hosts (hence the 'D' in 'DHCP') or if you expect to change your entire local subnet on any kind of frequent basis. The reality is that you can't just change the IP address of Mac OS X Server like this - there are too many dependencies, so it's better to set it manually, knowing that there's a cost (and pain) to change the server's address.

  • My iMac G5 is not registering the connection of cable modem

Something freaky happen to my computer one morning about a month ago and since then, I haven't been able to connect to the internet.
My computer is set to start up at a certain time in the a.m. and connects to the internet automatically. Recently, it started up before I awoke and when I did wake up I noticed that the my homepage for my web browser didn't load. I could tell moments later that there must have been a brief power outage to the home. I restarted my web browser and then the computer itself to no avail. I still could not connect to the internet.
I don't know a lot about computers from a technical standpoint, but I know a little. I looked at the network configurations to see if anything stood out. The one thing I noticed was the ethernet settings read to connect the ethernet cable to the computer. Since the cable was actually connected. I figured I may have a big problem on my hands.
The other issue I've noticed is the amount of time it takes to startup and shut down. It's not a very long time (maybe 5 minutes), but I think longer than normal or I remember prior to having internet issues.
If anyone has any clue to what may be going on with my machine, I would definitely appreciate some insight. All suggestion are welcomed.
BTW, I called a so called "Mac Specialist" in the town I reside in and was told that my computer's logic board needed to be replaced and it could cost me as much as $600. I most certainly hope that's not the only solution.
    Thanks in advance!

There is a possibility the machine may have sustained some
damages due to a power surge, a brown-out or other variation
in electricity supplied to the machine from the grid.
An uninterruptible power supply with an automatic voltage
regulation circuit built into it is helpful to isolate computers
from the variations and unpredictability of some grid power.
This is not a surge protector. Those are not recommended.
You could try and see if repairing disk permissions in the
system by using that option in Disk Utility. Perhaps to
check and repair the hard disk drive, too, by using the
booted OS X installer's version of Disk Utility, is wise.
On the original OS installer packet disc #1 where the
Installer and Apple Hardware Test are located, it may
be wise, too, to run the Hardware Test to see if any
issues are reported or trouble indicated.
A reset of the power management unit or system manage-
ment controller, etc (whichever your model has) could be
helpful, even if it starts up and runs OK after an outage.
{And a re-install of the complete operating system on a
fully erased (wiped, overwritten with zeroes) reformatted
hard disk drive may be a part of this troubleshooting; if
you keep good records of what you do and how it was
done, even a fair tech should be able to tell you more
directly (if they are fair and honest) of the likelihood of
the hard disk drive being the cause of your problems.
    -Doing this would destroy all of your stuff in the Mac.}
There is a chance that the hard disk drive may have a
few issues after a power incident, in some cases, a
few bad blocks or sections of the drive may be bad if
the machine's data was affected by an outage; these
can be checked and sometimes successfully repaired
by using a disk utility; some suggest use of DiskWarrior.
    Have you been able to test the cable modem itself;
perhaps reset the modem and then reattach the
computer to it; or see if it works with another computer?
Sometimes, even booting the computer in SafeBoot mode
and then login, then choose to run Disk Utility's repair disk
permissions, and then restart the computer normally, helps.
Have you tried a second user account to see if the issue
of connectivity is isolated to the main or admin account?
Usually, all accounts share the main connection settings.
    Sometimes, checking and re-affirming settings can help;
at least as part of a troubleshooting path, to see what
doesn't fix it, and hope to find something which does.
If the issue does come down to a hardware repair of
more than a reasonable percentage of a refurbished
Mac direct from the Apple Store online, consider a
different computer. Even the low-end Intel based iMac
is leaps ahead of the G5 iMac. (I still have G4s!)
PS: What are you using to get online?
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • HT2497 Using Time Machine for home wifi just fine. Switched to cable modem from DSL.  Now having trouble connecting laptops to wifi. ISP says it is not their fault. Mac books won't connect on their own.

Changed from DSL to cable modem. Now Mac book pro won't connect to wifi - Time Machine?
One Mac ok, other not. Help?

Thanks. We have been using an existing Time Machine for wifi.  Cable modem replaced DSL router and was hooked up to Time Machine. What's odd is that 3 computers and iPad2 are connecting to home wifi just fine, using exact same network and password as before. My Mac book pro and an older iPad are not. IPhones are also connecting to home wifi just fine. I managed to get my Mac book pro hooked one time by copying ip address from a Mac that was working (entered manually) then turning that one off. That's not what I need.
The error message is "no ip address".

  • Airport Extreme Base Station not cooperating with Cable Modem

The non-specific issues are by far the most frustrating and I can't make any sense of this. To be fair, this might not be a AEBS issue as much as a ISP issue, but any suggestions are much appreciated.
History: My setup has worked great for about 6 months, but recently I've been having intermittent problems (described below) that have been getting progressively worse and more frequent. The issues have not changed in relationship to firmware/software updates for the AEBS and airport utility.
Setup: Cable Modem (Time Warner Kansas City is ISP) --> AEBS (A1143 on the latest firmware) --> periodic wireless connection to imac, macbook pro and 2 iphones. A Time Machine (hard drive) is also connected to the AEBS via USB.
    Symptoms:
-Intermittent disconnects and slowdowns over wireless
    -Wired connections are completely unaffected.
-Loss of wireless internet connectivity is consistent through all devices.
-Time machine is unavailable when the internet is not accessible.
-During disconnects sometimes the router doesn't even appear, sometimes I can connect but can't reach my time machine or the internet, sometimes it won't accept my password and sometimes it times-out.
Sounds like the wireless transmitter is going out on the AEBS or something, right? Well, Apple was kind enough to replace my AEBS under warranty to try to solve this problem, but it hasn't gone away.
Could this be an issue with my ISP not distributing IP address properly or something? I'm not really very savvy with the way all that works.
Thanks for your help with this mess.

Its gotta be the surrounding interference issue. I found a macworld article that refers to testing the different channels in the 2.4gHz range and finding some completely unusable (as you mention). If I didn't have a couple iPhones that can't run 5gHz, I'd certainly bump up to that because apparently that's where the performance is!
Here's a link to the article, although it's mostly a review, though information within is pertinent to our issue.

Hoping someone can help with setting up my new time capsule.  I am just switching from my extreme to the time capsule.  I can not get the time capsule to go anywhere but to amber blinkiing.  I can go back to the extreme and interenet works fine.
    Here is what I did:
plugged in the ethernet cable from the cable modem
plugged in the time capsule power
Just cycles to amber blinking -- no internet connection
Tried pulling up the airport utility but it just shows my old extreme configuration and says that it is not supported anymore.  Do not see how to display info on the flashing light.
I have gone back to the extreme three times and it seems to work fine.
I also repowered the modem in between trying to get the time capsule to work

Is this a cable modem? It has to be off for at least 20min and sometimes much longer before it will give up the old settings. You might even need to power down the cable modem overnight.
Tell us exactly what broadband you have with what ISP and exact model of modem..
The new TC cannot be setup without using the latest airport utility 6.3.1 or 6.3.2 and you need Lion - Mavericks to use it.
The computer also needs to have ipv6 setup to local link on whatever you are connecting with, wireless or ethernet.

  • Why does my airport extreme not recognize my cable modem anymore?

Why does my airport extreme not recognize my cable modem anymore?

Have you tried resetting the modem? Power it down and let it rest a moment, then power it back up again.
Also, some ISPs require physically detaching their cable from the modem for it to be fully reset. Literally unscrew it from the modem. Try that, in conjunction with powering it down.
Don't do anything with your Extreme, other than powering it down too, in the event the modem reset does not help. Reconfiguring it may be necessary but this is not justified quite yet.

I just bought a airport wireless route and I have a time warner modem. My problem is my modem is not connecting to my apple airport router. What do I need to do?

Power cycle the cable modem.. you may try leaving it off 5min.. might be enough.. sometimes you need 15min or even longer.. Followed by power cycle of the AE.
Nothing else should be connected to the modem.. except the router that will get the public IP as they only hand out ONE>
