Can I update IPhone software via an IPad?
I'm wondering if it's possible to do software updates for my IPhone via an IPad vs. a computer/laptop?
No. If you're updating to iOS 5.0, you must do so through iTunes on your computer.

Storage space on iCloud is not a substitute for storage space on the iPad. You need sufficient storage space on your iPad to accomodate the download. How much Available space do you have? Go to Settings>General>Usage

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

attempting to update iphone software via pc. itunes engaged. back up does not appear to have occurred. device now locked. requesting restore action. anyway to save photos in this status? or restore after?
it was just the biggest mistake of today, not my life :P
restoration steps i took were:
1. connect the dead phone to another pc with itunes turned on
2. follow the notifications on that itunes
3. restore the phone
4. disconnect the phone after the restoration without clicking any buttons of that itunes
5. connect the phone to my own pc
6. my own pc can recognize the phone and itunes will try to restore the backup of my phone
7. restore from the backup on my pc
8. sync everything (tick all the apps in itunes manually since there is no such button to select all) and reorganize all the apps
9. after ca. 25 min, the phone is back to the previous sw version -

I have an iPad (probably first generation - Model A1337 ). This tablet has iOS version 5.1.1.
I would like to update for the latest version as possible.
There is no option by iPad wifi.
I also tried by iTunes and in option Checking for UpDate, only let me know the current version, but doesn't open the possiblity to update for a newer.
How can I update the software version ?

The first generation iPad is limited to iOS 5.1.1. This is due to the original iPad not having enough power or memory to get to iOS 6, 7 or any further in the future.
All other iPads and iPad Minis can get to the current version - iOS 7.0.4 and at least until the end versions of iOS 7 or iOS 8.

If you are using a Windows based computer, could be security software and or the firewall preventing the update process.

Missing All Apps in iTunes AND can't update iphone software
APP PROBLEM- just happened today
There are zero apps showing in my app folder all of the sudden. My phone shows that 77 updates are available, and yet, not a single app shows up in the apps folder itself. When I click "check for updates" in the app folder, again nothing.
IPHONE SOFTWARE PROBLEM- been happening for months
When I plug in my phone to update and sync it says I have software version 4.1 and "A newer version of the iphone software is available (v 4.2). Click to update" so I click "update" and then it says "This version of itunes (9.2) is the current version". Well I didn't click update itunes, i clicked update for the iphone software. So I can't update the software. I have a 2nd gen iphone.
The only change that's happened is I think I tried downloading the newest version of itunes and it said my operating system is too old for it. So, itunes 9 opens fine, my music is in there. All of my apps have disappeared and I can't update my iphone software. Please help.Thank you. So, as far as the iphone update, I'm out of luck unless I get a new operating system, right?
Yes, I tried restarting my computer to see if they would reappear. I just checked the library on my hard drive and I can't see any applications there. They are still not coming up in the apps folder in the itunes library either.

Can't update iphone software...takes forever to backup. help!!
I have the original iphone 16gb and I can't update to the current software. My iphone connects just fine to Itunes. I hit the update software button and it downloads the software just fine, then it starts backing up the iphone and it takes HOURS..DAYS...then I have to quit the process because I need to take my cell phone with me! I have a white macbook and have had no problems with Itunes...I have the latest version of Itunes. What should I do to speed up the updating process? It has never taken this long before! That only appears when you have iOS 5+ installed, you will need to do the update via your computer's iTunes.
Connect the iPad to your computer and copy any purchases off the iPad to your computer via File > Transfer Purchases (you may also want to copy photos off the iPad as well) and then force a backup of the iPad by right-clicking the iPad 'Device' on the left-hand side of iTunes and selecting 'Backup'. You may also want to copy off the iPad any important documents, notes, files etc e.g. via the file sharing section at the bottom of the device's apps tab when connected to iTunes, via wifi, email, dropbox etc - they should be included in the backup, but it's best to have a copy of them outside of the backup just in case.
You can then start the update by selecting the iPad on the left-hand side of iTunes, and on the Summary tab on the right-hand side clicking the Check For Updates button.

Unlock the Network preference pane, if necessary, by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your password. Cllck Advanced, open the DNS tab, and change the server addresses to the following:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
That's Google DNS. Click OK, then Apply.
In Safari, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If you’re using another browser, empty the cache. Test. Any difference?
Notes:
1. If you lose Internet access after making the above change to your network settings, delete the Google servers in the Network preference pane, then select the TCP/IP tab and click Renew DHCP Lease. That should restore the original DNS settings; otherwise restore them yourself. Remember that you must click Apply in order for any changes to take effect.
2. I don't use Google DNS myself, though I have tested it, and I'm not recommending it or any other DNS provider; the server addresses are offered merely for testing purposes. There may be privacy and technical issues involved in using that service, which you should investigate personally before you decide whether to keep the settings. Other public DNS services exist. -

The problem is I can only update the software on one of the three iPhones – the primary phone I used to setup the iTunes acct. What is the best solution to manage these devices for software updates, apps? This is probably a common problem with families wanting to share apps and music without realizing the issues created by this approach. As it stands today... the first (primary) iPhone associated with the iTune acct has been updated with the latest software version 5.1.1 and sync'd up with all the apps, music, etc from the one iTune acct, while the other two iPhones are still running on the original software version 4.0.2 and are experiencing problems now. I was advised by AT&T back in January that it would be necessary to setup separate iTunes accts for the second and third iPhones in order to receive system updates. The problem would be how to keep all the apps, etc from being deleted off the second and third phones that were originally loaded from the one iTunes acct. Since this AT&T advice was prior to iCloud coming out, would iCloud be a better solution or at least part of the solution? I really don't yet understand how iCloud works. I'm using same apple id for my ipad & ipod but after start using the same apple id on my ipad, i can't update my free software downloaded on both, it's showing "YOU CAN NOT UPDATE THIS SOFTWARE SINCE YOU HAVE NOT OWNED THE MAJOR VERSION OF THIS SOFTWARE" so how i can update my softwares on ipad & ipod using the same apple id
I think the issue is that iTunes (for whatever reason) thinks I have two Apple ID's.
also, to further complicate the issue, when i try updating the apps from my iPod the iTunes store is still recognizing my old hotmail Apple ID. So when I go to enter my password it won't accept because it doesn't match with the old Apple ID, even though it is the same account (just new Apple ID name).
I have tried signing out within the App Store and re-signing in with my Apple ID but it still brings up my old Apple ID name when I try to update.
