Can Mountain Lion OSX read the TinyUDF Filesystem?
In an Apple Forum post from 8 years ago a member instructed us to use Terminal to identify the video file on the TinyUDF Filesystem DVD-R, extract the file, and give access to the file on our desktop. I have tried unsuccessfully to do this in Mountain Lion. My skills in Terminal are at fault. When I am instructed to:
Mac~ zaphod$ sudo ls -l /Volumes/StorageLabs\ TinyUDF\ Volume/Password:<enter your root/admin password>
I get:
-bash: enter: No such file or directory
Any help would be appreciated. I submit the terminal commands in the previous solution:
$ mount
Mac~ zaphod$ sudo ls -l /Volumes/StorageLabs\ TinyUDF\ Volume/Password:<enter your root/admin password>
Mac:~ zaphod$ sudo cp -R /Volumes/StorageLabs\ TinyUDF\ Volume/VIDEO_TS ~/Desktop
sudo chmod -R 777 ~/Desktop/VIDEO_TS/
I have found a way to copy files from a "StorageLabs Tiny UDF Volume" DVD file in a Mac without using Terminal. I cannot speak to Mountain Lion since I am using Snow Leopard (OS 10.6.8). However I believe this will work. It requires TOAST. Here is a step-by-step:
1. With TOAST turned off, insert the disc that contains one or more TinyUDF files.
2. Make a duplicate of the file on the desktop (cmd-d). (This may take some time - 10, 15 or 20 minutes and may require your password).
3. Open TOAST; select Video and click on DVD-Video. (NOTE: When you open TOAST the original TinyUDF Volume folder will be hidden, but the duplicate will remain). Do not eject your disc until later.
4. Display the TOAST "Media Browser" (click on the small icon at the top right corner of the Toast window, just to the left of the question mark).
5. In the Media Browser, for the upper bar use the pull-down menu and select DVD. For the lower bar use the pull down menu and select "- - - - DVD-VR". Files/Titles that are on the disc will be shown. If Chapters are desired, in the lower bar select the video File/Title and Chapters of the video will be displayed.
6. Drag only one desired File/Title to the DVD-Video window and save as a Disc Image to the Desktop or other location. File will be multiplexed and then written and the saved file will show as a folder named "(name).toast". If the disc contains multiple Files/Titles repeat this step to a new DVD-Video window for each desired File/Title, creating a separate Disc Image for each File/Title.
7. To record a single File/Title on a new DVD, in TOAST select "VIDEO_TS Folders". Click on the saved Disc Image ((name).toast). A window will open and display Video_TS and Audio_TS folders.
8. Drag the Video_TS folder to the TOAST "VIDEO_TS Folders" window. If additional titles are to go on the same new disc go to step 9. Otherwise eject the original disc and insert a recordable disc. (Clicking the "Options" button will provide a preview before making a new recording). Click the red TOAST button to create a new DVD recording.
9. To put more than one File/Title on a disc, put each File/Title in new TOAST DVD-Video window and save each as a separate Disc Image. In TOAST, select "VIDEO-TS Compilation" and drag the Video-TS folder from each Disc Image into the window in the desired sequence. Eject the original disc and insert a recordable disc. Click the red TOAST button to create a new DVD recording.
I hope I haven't missed anything, but these are the steps I took to create a new DVD from my "TinyUDF" disc which contained 3 separate videos. If you find an error please reply with a correction.

Why can't I install software for AirPort Extreme 802.11n while running Mountain Lion OSX? The installation CD simply says that the software can't be installed while running this OSX.
Mountain Lion already has the most recent, updated version of AirPort Utility installed on your Mac. The version on your CD is out of date, so you can trash the CD.
Look in Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility. -

Yesterday, I purchased Mountain Lion OSX and tried to download it but I don't think the download worked. How can I tell if I am using Mountain Lion and how do I get help if the download was unsuccessful?
Click your Apple menu icon top left corner of your screen.
From the drop down menu click About This Mac.
If Mountain Lion is installed, it will say: v10.8
If not, launch the App Store. From the App Store menu bar click Store > Check for Unfinished Downloads
FYI .. for downloading Mountain Lion from the App Store, a high speed (broadband) internet connection is strongly recommended by Apple as noted here > iTUNES STORE - MAC APP STORE - TERMS AND CONDITIONS
If you need to reinstall OS X or repair the the startup disk Mountain Lion Recovery, that requires broadband access to the internet via Wi-Fi or an Ethernet connection. OS X is downloaded over the internet form Apple when OS X Recovery is used for reinstallation. -
I downloaded Mountain Lion OSX, but can't install the thing. Why not?
Question
Problem solved - I was using my Apple I.D. Password by mistake when I should have been using my Mac OSX password. Apple support gave me this solution and I was then able to install the Mountain Lion OSX with no problemo!

I downloaded mountain lion and then the new office suite (word, ppt, excel) but now when I try to display one of my ppt's it says 'ppt cannot open the file...the file may be corrupt, in use, not a type recognized by ppt etc.." how can I fix it?? HELP
Did you try to open teh fle by double-clicking its icon? If the file was made with an older version of Office, you may get that message. Try opeing PP and, from its "File" menu, see if you can open the ppt. I've foundthat often gets around that message and then yo ucan save the file from the newer version.
If that doesn't work, consider asking in the Microsoft Office: Mac forums here:

PowerPoint is not an Apple product and it seems a lot of people around here avoid Office. -
In Mountain Lion, Safari Reader does not accept webpages than used to work with Reader in Lion, for example Wikipedia entries.
Do you experience the same? I find the Reader Function very useful for reading and saving webpages. Please expand its compatibility with more websites again, Apple.Me too. On a article web page, more often than not, the Safari reader button is greyed out. What is even more strange, i can make it appear after 2 or 3 refresh of the same page, or if I play with the safari windows width or height. It seems more stable when Safari is full screen. Very weird.

After Installing the OS x Mountain Lion some o the softwares are asking for Java SE 6 Runtime. Can someone please help me find a solution.
By default, ML no longer comes with the Java runtime preinstalled. I believe the route to enabling Java if you are going to need it is to run the Java Preferences app found in Utilities. It will inform you of Java's absence and offer to install the latest version and activate it. On subsequent runs, the Preferences app will allow you to fine tune how the runtime operates.
Note that the new default operation is for the applet plugin to be disabled. You need to enable it as needed and it self-deactivates if unused in awhile. Also important to note that Java comes in both 32 and 64 bit versions and you can set the preferred order. Default is 64-bit but I've had issues with some applets failing to run and have had to switch the order. -
I can't download mountain lion, I get the following message "could not complete your purchase, can't verify the file, it may be damaged or unsigned" ? what do i have to do ?
The only thing that worked for me was to boot in safe mode.
Power down. Then press power button and hold 'shift' key until grey screen with progress bar appears... Once booted and logged in just open safari and browse to applestore.
No trouble at all once I did this.
Reminder: create full backup before you upgrade OS
Hope it helps. -
When trying to download Mountain Lion, I get the following message: "We could not complete your purchase. OSX 10.8 Mountain Lion requires a Core 2 Duo, .... processor." However, my iMac lists a 2GHz Intel Core Duo as its processor. Help?
Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Mountain Lion is a 64-bit operating system, and an Intel Core Duo processor is only 32-bit, so you can't use Mountain Lion on your Mac. You can keep using your actual OS X version or buy a new Mac if you want Mountain Lion -

When upgrading from osx 10.7.4 to osx mountain lion I get the following Alert! This update requires OS X version 10.8.
Sounds like you downloaded the 10.8.1 update instead of the Mountain Lion installer from the Mac App Store.
You have to purchase Mountain Lion from the App Store to get to 10.8 -
I have a MacBook Pro bought in dec 2009. Currently has mountain lion osx installed. Worked like a dream until today. Randomly froze, so I restarted it. To find I got a grey screen. It wouldn't start. Also note my DVD drive doesn't work, but mountain lion was installed via App Store anyway.
So here's what I done so far:
tried resetting PRAM - No success
Done disk utility. Disk verified with no errors. I even re formatted disk. - no success starting.
Tried re installing mountain lion via download . It froze halfway installing -no success.
Tried backing up a time machine backup from my USB hard drive. It froze at 1% - no success
Tried booting from safe mode - no success
Tried the command line boot - no success.
Please someone help!Sounds like the hard dre has left the building, Died, in the Sh*tter, Gone to the hard drive resting place in the sky.
Buy a new drive connect it to the system with a SATA to USB adapter and see if you can install Mt Lion on that drive connected externally. If you can then the drive inside your system has failed.
Oh Wait!!!! You have the 2009 model. They are known for bad drive to logic board cables. So it may not be the drive itself but the cable going from the drive to the logic board. Do the same as above then if the system runs OK with the new drive connected externally install it in the system and see if it boots. If it does you are good to go. If it doesn't then it is more then likely the cable that hs failed.
I would suggest you also SAVE a copy of that download of Mt Lion and create a USB install drive from it using Lion Disk Maker, once you get your system up and running. -
Lost use of word for mac 2004 when upgraded to mountain lion OSX
IVe just upgraded to Mountain Lion OSX and lost use of word for Mac 2004. how can i get in to work again
Office 2004 and Other Applications Don't Work in Lion/Mountain Lion
If you have Office 2004 which is a PPC-only suite, it will not work in Lion/Mountain Lion. You need to upgrade to Office 2011 - Mactopia - or you can try the freeware suite, Libre Office, that is functionally similar to Office 2007 for Windows except it works on Lion/Mountain Lion.
You may want to consider as well:
These two suites are similar to Libre Office but not as current or as well-supported:
NeoOffice
Open Office
And, then there is Apple's iWork suite:
Pages - word processing and layout
Keynote - presentation
Numbers - spreadsheet
Each can open and save Office compatible files. They may be purchased separately via the Mac App Store for $19.99 each.
As for other software, any PPC-based software will not run in Lion or Mountain Lion because Rosetta is no longer part of OS X. You will need to upgrade to Intel versions of the software.
(Access to the Mac App Store requires Snow Leopard 10.6.6 or higher and an Apple ID.)
