CAN'T APPLY KEYWORDS

Hello,
I created template Keywords, checked keywords, saved, select All pictures, append metadata,
and NOTHING happens, I am showing "multiple values", thanks

Hi Margieannejulie
You already have the keywords panel in view according to your screenshot. You are using the default 'essential' Workspace which to my opinion is next to useless but you can easily create and save your own workspace by dragging the panels in size or move them to another location. The lines between columns and panels can be used to change the size and if you click and hold a tab you drag the panels. A horizontal blue lines means between two other panels and a surrounding blue line means adding as a tab to an existing panel.
Bottom right in your screenshot is the panel keywords.
Under other keywords are your present keywords in italic, meaning they are not persistent in your keyword list that by the looks of it is also the default one.
Top right of the keyword panel is a small menu icon. when you click on it it shows a few options. Amongst them New Keyword. If you name this keyword Syrian you can add sub keywords to this keyword.
Either by using again the menu icon or while with your cursor on the new keyword right click on it and from the menu choose new sub keyword. This adds a sub keyword to Syria that acts as the parent keyword.
Now you can choose to either create more sub keywords for Syria or add another sub keyword to nest in an existing keyword.
For example you have all images made in Syria which obvious would be the parent keyword because all files are made in this country.
Then you can divide the subjects to your own wishes. Let's say you have some opposition fighters with Kalashnikovs in Aleppo that would make a set up like this:
Syria
     Aleppo
          Syrian opposition fighter
               Kalshnikov
This is a keyword with 3 nested sub keywords. In Bridge preferences under Keywords you can set the option to automatically apply parent keywords which to my opinion can be quit useful because it means when you click on the last nested keyword it also auto selects the above keywords. In this case it would mean you select all images of fighters with Kalashnikovs in Aleppo in the bridge content window. Now you only have to click on the keyword called 'Kalashnikov' and automatically the other keywords Syrian opposition fighter, Aleppo and Syria are also selected and applied.
The pro's of having such a set up instead of all keywords in one template is that you can narrow your search better. If you create other sub keywords under Syria (for instance with children) and you do a search for Syria both the images with children and the fighters will appear as a result. But if you search for the keyword Kalashnikov only the ones with fighters showing guns will show in the result.
I hope this makes sense
So take some time in creating a good keyword tree having good main keywords with many sub keywords. Then select the files you want them to apply to and click on the most nested keyword you want to add and the miracle happens.
You have to take care letting Bridge do all the caching once the activity bar bottom left starts running. Because if you click on another keyword while the previous process in still going on it will start the new job before finishing the old one. Resulting in not having all keywords applied which shows by a minus in the square instead of a checkmark (when all files have the same word applied).
It seems a lot of work but once you know the principal it is fairly easy. The little extra effort you make at this point will be paid back later on when you have a lot of files in your archive and need to find just the view files you want to have.
Also be sure to regularly export the keywords list for back up purposes.

  • Can you apply keywords and metadata for only some subfolders at import?

I thought I should make a separate thread for my second LR file import question.
It seems that LR authors assumed that most users would download single events or projects but that isn't the case with me.  I'm just an amateur with a Canon 30D and a 4 gb CF card.  I can get hundreds of raw files on that card and many times I won't download the contents of the card to my computer until I have taken pictures at several different events.  So I may have a birthday and a campout and some landscapes in the download and the same keywords or metadata may not apply to all of them.  LR allows me to group these different events by date in different subfolders but it looks like the metadata/keywords that you can add at download apply not to individual subfolders but to the entire download, is that right?  If I've misunderstood or overlooked something how do you apply different keywords or metadata to different subfolders at download?

As you have discovered, Lightroom applies the same keywords, metadata and any develop settings to every photo during import. The workaround to break the import down into individual events by only selecting one shoot at a time in Import dialog thumbnail window. Deselect ALL of the thumbnails then use the keyboard modifiers such as Opton/Alt, Cmd/Ctrl or Shift to select the particular shoot that you want to import.

  • Can't apply keyword to multiple images

Though the help file says you can, when I select multiple photos and then click on a keyword, it only applies the keyword to one of the photos. Same thing if I click the checkmark next to the keyword. It does apply to all selected photos if I drag the images to the keyword, but why doesn't it work when I just click the keyword?
    Thanks

Two things, you have to be in Grid View, not Filmstrip Selection and not have Menu/Metadata/'Show Metadata for Target Photo Only' checked. I and others have gotten bitten by this, too.

  • Applying Keywords in Aperture - why can't I do it?

I'm trying to apply keywords to images by dragging and dropping both from the keyword HUD and the keyword panel, but nothing is happening. Nothing appears either on the image or in metadata. Am I missing something really simple (happens a lot to us seniors), or is there another explanation? I would really appreciate some help on this as I've already spent a long time with Apple & Microsoft to no avail. I thought that upgrading from 3.0 to 3.1 might help, but no luck there either. I hope someone out there can help to stop me climbing the walls!!!

I'll try be of more help to you than Microsoft
Are you trying to apply keywords to multiple photos at once? If so it could be that you're in Primary Only mode and the keywords are only being applied to one picture at a time, giving you the impression they're not being applied at all (if you're not checking the selected pic). The control to toggle Primary on/off is the S key - which can easily be hit by mistake.
    If not, try the following:
    • Select a picture.
    • Go to the Metadata pane and from the popup menu select General. You should see a Keywords field.
    • Drag a keyword from the HUD. Has it been added?
    • If not, type a keyword in the Keywords field.
    • With the same picture selected go to Menubar>Metadata>Lift Metadata. When the Lift & Stamp HUD appears deselect everything except Keywords.
    • Select a few pictures and click Stamp Selected Images in the HUD. Have the keywords been added to the selected pics?
Let us know how this goes…

  • HT202789 How can I apply new keywords in iMovie (2013)?

I can't find the keyword button and can't activate it in advanced tools anymore, so how do I apply keywords to clips in iMovie (2013)?

    Greetings anadk,
Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It looks like you've found the article regarding accessing keywords from previous versions of iMovie in iMovie (2013). While you can use keywords from projects created in previous version of iMovie, this is not a feature of the current version.
You can find some good tips for organizing clips in your iMovie (2013) projects at the Help page:

  • Can you apply ranged keywords to synchronized clips?

    Howdy y'all,
I have two audio files representing separate sides of a conversation, recorded with two separate mics. (This lets me control their levels and such in post, individually.) It's trivial to turn these two clips into a single Syncronized clip, once I make whatever adjustments I wish to them indivudally. So far so good.
Now I'm at the point where I want to log the major sections of this conversation, marking ranges with keywords. But while I can select ranges on the synchronized clip with the range tool (or setting in / out points as I listen), I can't seem to assign keywords to any of these ranges. I can bring up the keyword editor and type stuff all right, but no keyword I thus create ever gets assigned to the syncronized clip. It seems that the most I can do is keyword only one or the other of the synchronized clip's constituent clips. I don't wanna do that; I want to log the whole, synthezied conversation, not just one mic's output.
I have also tried to do this by treating the separate tracks as a compound clip rather than a syncronized clip, and I encounter the same issue.
Am I missing something, or using the wrong FCPX idiom? Or can you simply not log at any level other than at the lowest level of original clips? (Which would make me sad and confused...)
Background: I am yet another person coming to FCPX after cutting my A/V teeth years ago on (in this case) FCP 5. And yes, I'm trying to use this to edit together an audio-only podcast. I got good enough at "classic" FCP idioms that I wouldn't think twice about doing it, despite the lack of a video element in the source, so it seemed natural to use FCPX for this project today. If I am flat-out using the wrong tool, please let me know. But I tried using GarageBand for this, and the lack of e.g. j/k/l made me instantly hate it...

Thanks; that does seem to do the trick.
I don't suppose there's a way to bring up a visualization of a clip's audio waveform in the viewer pane? (I refer to the middle pane in the top row.) I feel a bit crowded working with a lengthy audio track using only that tiny, scrunched view in the browser pane, and I seem to recall that you could change the view in classic FCP to display only the audio.
If I'm just doing coarse-level logging it isn't a huge deal, and I'm willing to concede that this is one thing I have to live with using a video editor on an audio-only project. But it'd be nice to have...

  • Bridge CS4 - I still can't move keywords for stock photos

    I'm on a Mac Pro, Leopard 10.5.8, 4G RAM.
I buy a lot of stock photos. The stock photo companies have thoughtfully assigned a bunch of keywords to the photos, sometimes in other languages that I don't really speak. Photos.com is notorious for applying keywords that have nothing to do with the photo, as evidenced my my searches for certain keywords. I wish they'd all stop doing this.
When these photos are opened, their keywords appear under "Other Keywords." I can make the keyword permanent under "Other Keywords," but I am unable to drag the keyword(s) into the main keyword list in an effort to GET RID OF this "Other Keywords" list.
I was hoping this was addressed in Bridge CS4, but of course it wasn't...UNLESS...
someone here knows how to do it?

YES Terence!  Thank you. Exporting allowed me to move my photos from iPhoto into the Burn Folder on my desktop.   But that doesn't explain why I'm having to go that route now.   Have I done something (accidentally changed some setting) on my computer that will not allow me to just click and drag anymore?   I really liked the convenience of the click and drag option.
I don't have the time tonight to export and burn a lot of CD/DVDs.  I'll try that tomorrow and make sure my photos are moving properly.  I also need to export photos to my external hard drive to make sure that route is working.
Wouldn't you know that my Apple Care Plan runs out this Wednesday?!  I need to make sure everything is working properly before that expires.
Thank you so much for your help.   I really, really appreciate it.

  • Bridge CC crashes when I am applying keywords

    Hello everyone!
I'm using applied keywords in Bridge to standardize our metadata and it seems that at least once every hour or so I'll be in the middle of adding keywords and Bridge CC will "unexpectedly crash" so none of my changes get saved.
Has anyone else experienced this? I wondering if it's something I'm not doing correctly.
    Thank you so much!
    Emily

Photoshop & Bridge CC (downloaded last week)
That is not the same as having the latest versions, you also ned to check for updates to be sure using the latest versions
RAW files seem ok, the problem is happening with JPEG pics
Double check if you have read and write permissions for the files, folders and disks, but first check if you can add other metadata like keywords etc to the problem files. If not it seems definitively a read write permission issue.
And also check if you have used the correct file naming with no strange characters, only one dot at the end of the filename and the correct extension (preferable .jpg).

  • Cannot apply keywords/metadata to old pics - says "read only" files

Hi, I'm new to Apple World. Got a new Intel iMac, latest version Leopard, Photoshop Elements 6 that came with Bridge. No problem working with new photos. But it will not let me apply new keywords or metadata to old pictures imported from disk because it says they are "read only." These old photos were copied to my Mac hard drive from DVDs that were incremental backups from my Photoshop Elements 4.0 catalog on my old Windows XP PC. They were all copied into folders that I named to correspond with the backup disks. Some of the keywords ("tags" on PC program) imported, but many didn't. So I'm going through the arduous task of manually inputting the data again. Tried it with a template first -- did let me add keywords. Then bringing up each picture individually it gives me the "can't apply metadata to read only files" message. I have hundreds of old photos in over 100 different categories (previously topical tags) to go through here. What is the solution? Please help! Thanks. Judy

    Judy
can you be more specific about the 'Old Files'. Are they jpeg or tiff or something else. Do they have the proper extension jpeg: .jpg tiff: .tif etc..
And I don't know what copy from Elements catalog means, do you have the actual original files copied or just previews or other files that were set there by elements in the catalog?
Have you already checked if the files are not locked itself? select one in the finder, choose info and see if it is locked by itself ( there can also be a lock symbol in the bridge thumbnail that can be changed using Bridge menu.
Last, not many visitors of this forum use Elements, have you already tried this question in the Elements forum itself??

  • Automatically Apply Keywords when file is added to folder?

I am learning to love Bridge, but the more I learn, the more I see it's shortcomings. I love the idea of automation and I use it a lot but Bridge does seem to fall a little short in the area. I could not find a way to do this so I can only hope they will add features. I want to have Bridge automatically apply keywords to any file that exists, or is added to a folder. This would save a lot of time. It seems Bridge is perfectly suited to this kind of thing, so I really hope they add some automation features!

The meaning was: Lightroom is oversized (to only buy it) for adding keywords to files. Not everyone has bought Lightroom, not everyone uses CC.
sinrise: Please give an example where Bridge can automate something. I don't know of any. Everything you do is initiated by mouse clicks.

  • Applying Keywords To A Stack

    I've only been using Aperture for a few hours now so apologies if this is a really stupid question but;
How can you apply a keyword(s) to a stack?
Whenever I do it, it only applies itself to the first photo in the stack and yes I have disabled the Toggle Primary option (keystroke S). The only way I've found of applying the same keyword to all the photos in a stack is by opening the stack, selecting all the photos in that stack and then dragging the keyword onto one of them.
Purely to save time I'd like not to have to open a stack but just to select in the Browser and then any keyword I drag onto the stack is applied to all the photos in that stack.

Personally, I always use the "batch change" menu option when I want to change or add metadata to a bunch of images.

  • Applying keywords to a selection?

    Hi,
In 1.01 I could select a number of photos, open the keyword HUD, then drag a keyword from the HUD to one of the selected images. All the images would then receive the keyword.
Now, in 1.1 when I try this, only the image that I drag the keyword to gets the keyword? This this functionality change? How can I apply a keyword to a selection of images?
    Thanks,
    Allan

  • Applying keywords to subdirectories

I have a Videos folder with lots of subdirectories, each of which contain lots of video clips.
I've applied keywords to the bulk of the clips.
When I'm at the top directory, however, I can't filter based on the keywords.
Is there any way around this (other than dumping all of my large video files into the same directory)?
I'd like to keep my videos organized in folders, but I also want to be able to search the entire parent directory with bridge's keyword functionality.
    Thanks

    Hey Curt -
I'd stumbled on that (the Find command) in the past and subsequentyly forgotten about it - and that works just as you described, giving me the option of searching through my subfolders.  This leaves 2 questions, though.
    1) First, how do you force Bridge to go through and Index the contents of a folder?  (otherwise you have oiption to search non-indexed files along with warning that could take a long time)
    2) What I'd really like to be able to do is use the Filter Panel to select from the list of keywords.  This Filter Panel, however, only seems to make the Keywords found directly inside of its root level available - so if I have a Video folder holding 10 subfolders with different types of videos, all labeled with keywords, none of those words are listed when the Video folder is selected. Instead I have to go into each subdirectory individually and add my filters there.  That's really what I'm trying to work out.  Can you start in a parent directory and filter by keyword to pull up relevant videos from all of its subdirectories.
Thanks for whatever information you can provide.

  • Applying keywords to groups of images

I'm having difficulty applying Keywords to groups of images. When I select a group of images in the browser and drag a keyword from the HUD over them, the keyword is only applied to the image onto which it was directly dropped. I'm sure that in the past I've been able to apply a keword to any number of images at once using this technique. What's the obvious thing that I'm doing wrong here?
    Andy.

When I drag an album name onto an image (or vice versa) in Organizer 12 to add the image to the album I get an error dialog with the message "Error Applying Keyword Tag(s)" and the image is not added to the album. How can I fix this? Thanks.

    HI,
I don't think the rename was necessary as I didn't do that - I think it was the creation of a new album that did the trick. It must be a sort of permissions problem.
Glad it is now working for you.
