Can't boot up - damaged hard drive?

I've put all info here so hope it helps - 3 questions at bottom.
My system:
iMac G4 800MHz 80GB HD can't remember how much RAM but I think I'd put the max possible in it.
Mac os: 10.4.11
partitioned for 0SX and classic 9.9.2 (approx split 90%/10%)
The problem and what I've done so far:
The machine was running slow, then kept hanging. I checked and there was only 3GB free space so started to clear out some files (removing document files and Quicktime as I was going to reinstall it due to an error I'd received trying to open a movie file). The machine then either got stuck in a loop or hung trying to empty wastebasket. I moved some files from wastebasket to the desktop and moved a few at a time to wastebasket and emptied. Then it kept freezing, and I kept having to force a shutdown by pressing the power key for a few seconds.
During all of the above there was no (and thinking about it there hasn't been for a while now) startup chime.
I tried normal and safe boots and then reset the PRAM. Then it chimed on startup but wouldn't startup.
I've tried starting up from the original OSX10.2 disks supplied with the mac and a OSX10.4.3 disk. Only the latter will boot but only occasionally when holding down the C key on startup. If it does boot up this way it freezes after I get about 20% of the way through using disk utility or I try to install the system software.
Now either using disk utility or system software install, they do not recognise the disk.
When trying safe, single user and verbose boots, after about (est) 2-3 mins I get after about half a screen of text ending with:
diskOs10: I/O error.
Invalid key length
(4, 16111) -which I assume is the problem location on the disk
** volume check failed
syncing disks... Killing all processes
continuing
done
CPU halted -then the computer turns off.
As I haven't opened the computer up at all, I was hoping that it was a software problem that could ulimately be resolved by reformatting and reinstalling system software but with all the forced shutdowns and restarts (including having to restart with mouse key held down to remove/change installer disks) I fear the worst and think the hard drive is terminal or an outside chance that the superdrive is somehow at fault.
All of the above has happened in the last 24 hours.
I would like to try to at least copy off my email messages (100's) before giving up and replacing the internal hard drive.
Three questions:
1. Is there anything else I can do to try to reinstall system software?
2. I also have a MacBook (OSX 10.5.7) and a couple of LaCie 250GB firewire drives - is there any way I can hook these up or boot from the the MacBook or its DVD drive to see what's on the iMac G4 in it's current state?
3. Is replacing the hard drive straightforward or should it be done by a pro? (back in the day I often switched and replaced internal hard drives in old beige macs 6100's and as recently as tower G3's/G4's but I haven't looked inside a iMac other than to add RAM.)

Success! - this was my solution - it may help someone else avoid the three weeks of trial and error that I've been through.
I tried an older version (3.0.2) of DiskWarrior without success (web info suggests I'd need 3.0.3 or later) but I had managed to create disk images (.dmg) of the old partitions using DiskUtility onto an external firewire drive which I could mount successfully. At this stage I could to see all of my original files so rather than upgrade DiskWarrior on a 'maybe', I bit the bullet and reformatted the disk with the same size partitions and names as before in the hope that I would be able to clone from the dmg files.
I reinstalled OSX 10.3.4 and updated to OSX 10.4.11 to get back to where I'd started. I then tried using Carbon Copy Cloner to clone the disk images onto the new partitions but it kept crashing after a few hours. I also tried cloning to another IDE drive in another G3 (running 10.3.9) which also crashed. This left me thinking that the original problem had been that the hard drive was somehow in a knot and the 'knot' was still contained in the dmg file.
When I reinstalled OSX 10.3.4, I couldn't avoid using the setup assistant but as I didn't know a lot of the settings (I guess there are ways of getting this info from the dmg file but I didn't know how to and also, I wasn't sure if using OSX 10.4.11 settings in OSX 10.3.4 would cause more problems) I just entered basic details, restarted and updated to OSX 10.4.11. I then ran Software Update which updated a number of items.
I then used Migration Assistant to copy all of my settings and applications from the mounted .dmg file and it recovered most of my settings and applications. The applications work pefectly and didn't even ask for serial/validation details. I needed to spend an hour or two comparing two finder windows - one showing the mounted .dmg disk and another my new hard drive replacing newly installed Mail, Address Book and Safari files with the files from the .dmg file (Users, Preference and Application Support files etc), a restart or two later and it all appears to be working perfectly including all of my mailboxes, messages, contacts safari favourites etc .
Amazingly, it's a 80GB hard drive that I know was pretty full (showing only 3GB free) when I had the crash, the .dmg file is 67GB but now only 43GB disk space is used! As far as I know I haven't left anything out that I had on the disk before but as it all appears to be working well I really don't care!
I've already made new disk images!

    Unfortunately, that drive is long gone, probably back to the mfr. Drives are not returned when they are exchanged. You can go by and ask them, but the chances are slim to none.

    Good Evening. As you can see from the subject, my computer just can't boot from any hard drive that I put on it. I tried swapping the power supply, the SATA cable, resetting the BIOS, enabling legacy boot, changing from AHCI to IDE and RAID... 
    When I get to the BIOS setup, I can see the hard drive and its specifications, but it just won't boot or show up when I'm trying to install a new OS. I'm not an expert, but I think the problem might be in the motherboard SATA ports, but I'm not sure. Just to make sure, I did try another hard drive and it didn't work aswell. 
    I was also thinking about buying an external hard drive and instaling my OS on that, but I don't even know if that's possible and I would really like to have my computer working again.

    What is the installed operating system?
    Did you make a recovery disk set?
    Did you happen to make a  Windows 8.1 startup disk or USB recovery thumbdrive?
    Have you tested the hard disk?
    Press the power button and then immediately tap the Esc key. In the Startup menu, choose F2 for Diagnostics. In the HP Basic System Diagnostics menu choose hard disk. Run the test and post the results here.
    The issue you are facing has nothing to do with the SATA ports. It is a configuration issue. Your PC is a modern one and its BIOS (UEFI) is far more advanced than what you may have seen before.
    If you want to install a different operating system then you will have to make a few changes in the BIOS configuration. Secure Boot is turned on by default for Windows 8 and Windows 8.1. If you try installing a different OS without turning this off then your system won't boot up. You may be running into this if you are trying to install another operating system.
    The image below is  what will be seen in the BIOS of your PC in the security tab --> . In the secure boot configuration options do not clear the secure boot keys! Those keys are your operating system license activation keys.

  • X86 install was successful, but now I can't boot from the hard drive

    I have successfully installed Solaris 10 for x86 from the bootable CD ROMs. However, now, after removing the CD-ROM from the drive and booting from the hard disk I am having problems.
    The system attempts to boot. It displays the Solaris Primary Boot Subsytem v2.0 screen...pauses for 15 seconds...then reboots itself. And it continues this process.
    However, if I boot to CD-ROM first, then boot to the Hard Drive, I have no problems. The CDE comes up fine.
    We are running a 64 bit OS with a SATA drive that is supported. And as I mentioned, the install successfully completed.
    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

    is your hard drive connected as IDE0 - primary master? if not try doing so.

  • Can't boot from IDE hard drives

    Just purchased a barebones system with a KEN NEO Platinum board running an AMD 64 3400+. Tried to install old Maxtor hard drive (40 gb) into new system and a blue screen pops up for less than one second and reboots PC. I can’t read the blue screen but I believe it is saying there is a hardware conflict.
    What is causing this. The CMOS recognizes the HD but it can't boot from it. I’ve got two of these units and both have the same problems. I put the drive back into the original PC and it works fine.
    Need help desperately.

    When I connect the cables, they show which is the slave and which is the master. In the CMOS, everything looks fine. I've noticed alot of people are having difficulty installing used and new hard drives. I've been working with PC's for quite a while and I've never had this much trouble. I was hoping there was something I missed in the CMOS settings.

  • Can't boot from external hard drive

    I have a 250 GB OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro Firewire drive that I use for backups for my MacBook Pro (running 10.4.8) and iBook G4 (running 10.3.9). The drive is partitioned into four parts, two of which I use for bootable clones of the MBP and iBook. I've been able to boot from the MBP clone, but whenever I try to boot from the iBook clone, after a few seconds of the gray screen with the Apple logo on it and the spinning circle, the Apple logo turns into a gray circle with a diagonal line through it, and the spinning thing keeps spinning, and it never boots up. (For lack of a better description, the circle with the line through it is a gray version of the symbol you see, for instance, in the Ghostbusters logo.)
    Here's a few things that aren't (or don't seem to be) the problem:
    - I'm not trying to boot from the wrong machine--i.e., I'm not trying to boot the iBook clone from the MBP
    - Since I've tried creating the clone with both EMC Retrospect Express and SuperDuper and get the same result with both, it doesn't seem to be the backup software
    - I've tried completely erasing the partition (including erasing the free space) from both the MBP and the iBook before creating the clone
    - Just for good voodoo, I've also repaired permissions, reset the NVRAM, and run a disk repair on both the internal iBook disk and the clone
    - The iBook definitely recognizes it as a bootable drive, since it shows up when I hold down the option key during boot, and also in the Startup Disk section of System Preferences
    I'm a little stymied at this point. The only other things I can think of would be that (a) I need to completely reformat and repartition the drive (which I don't really want to do, since I also have other backups and data on there), or (b) for some reason the fact that I initially created the partitions on the MBP is preventing the iBook from using those partitions (i.e., I can only create Intel-only or PPC-only partitions, which I hope isn't the problem, since that would mean I'd need a whole separate drive just to back up the iBook).
    Anyone have any idea what's going on?

    The MBP and iBook require different partition schemes to be bootable. You won't be able to boot both computers from the same drive.

The needed partition scheme depends on the type of processor in your Mac. The installer installs Mac OS X for Intel-based Macintosh computers only on drives with the GUID partition scheme. It installs Mac OS X for PowerPC-based Macintosh computers only on drives with the Apple partition scheme.
    To check the external drive's partition scheme, open Disk Utility, select the drive in the list, choose File > Get Info, and look for the "Partition Type." If you can't see the "Partition Type," you may have selected the volume instead of the disk. (Drives are flush left, with their volumes indented to the right below them.)

    Clean Install of Snow Leopard
         1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc.  Insert the disc into the
             optical drive and restart the computer.  After the chime press and hold down the
             "C" key.  Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
             dark gray Apple logo.
         2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
             button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
             After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
             size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
             partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
             OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
         3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
             with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
             Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
             username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
             Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
             install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process by opening Software
             Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current.

When I boot up, I get to the apple logo and then the screen turns white and stays that way until I power off my machine.     I'm sorry, but that won't work because your MP only has Firewire ports and no Thunderbolt ports while your new MBP has Thunderbolt ports but no Firewire ports. Therefore, you cannot connect the two together except using Ethernet or Wi-Fi from which neither can be booted. If you use the device from Amazon, then you need to remove one of the drives to insert in it. Then you could boot from it provided the drive is actually bootable in the other machine. Snow Leopard is not capable of booting a 2013 MBP.

    Yes.
    Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
           it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
    Destination means an external drive. Source means the docked drive.

    Can't be done.  Snow Leopard does not contain necessary drivers and perhaps other items required for OS X on the 2011 MBA.  In fact, the version of Lion on the App store won't install on the 2011 MBA.
    This is totally normal in Apple's world.  A new version of MAC hardware that comes with a new version of OS X installed usually will not operate correctly with previous versions of OS X.

    I have two T60 laptops.  I reimaged both and one boots fine.  The other only goes to a blinking cursor.  Is this due to the security chip?  I went into the bios, but it already said disabled.
    It shows this message right before it goes to the blinking cursor (I only was able to display it after turning off fast boot):

    I've tried disabling everything in the Bios, not sure what else to try.  Any help really appreciated!!

    Hello! There are a few things that could cause this. One is a bad pram battery. Do you remember if the clock was resetting to an odd date lately? Another is the hard drive may be failing or the directory is messed up which is why you get the "?" on a folder. Try booting from your install cd and repair the disk. Tom

    I just replaced my internal hard drive and copied the back-up from the old drive onto the new one.  The new drive appears to be properly formatted and to contain all the data I copied to it, but I am unable to boot from it.  Any advice?  Thanks!

    Thanks, Courcoul.  I went back and formatted the drive again, this time booting from the OSX installation CD. (Last time I booted from the back-up drive from which I was copying.)  I don't know if it was booting from the CD and not the drive, or that I didn't format it properly the first time, but this did the trick.  Working perfectly.

    Do you have an Intel version of OS X installed on the external drive and did you partition the external drive using the GUID partition scheme? If not then that's your problem. Also, depending upon which model MBP you have you may require a later version of OS X. According to my information the C2D 17" MBP requires at least 10.4.8 (the build that came on the OS X Installer discs that came with the computer.) 10.4.6 will not boot that model.

    Well if there is damage to the data on the drive, then it's certainly going to transfer over.
    Your best option would be to do a fresh install of 10.6 on the drive/new drive, then update...

    Next install your free iLife and any third party programs
    Restoring your Free iLife (iPhoto, iMovie etc)
    Then upgrade to the latest OS X version you were using via AppStore
    Then install any third party programs from original sources.
    Then cherry pick your files from the bad drive eliminating the corrupt ones, transferring manually out of the Music, Pictures, Documents etc., folders (do NOT use Migration or Setup Assistant against a corrupted drive/data.
    (mind you have to transfer files into the same named user account, then likely have to reset #6 Users Permissions)
    Then make plenty of backups/clones of this new install
