Canon XF300 and FCPX 1.5

When I capture media from my Canon XF300 and play it back I get a stutter.  I contacted Canon and they recommended their FCPX plug-in.  Their current plug-in is for version 1.3; they are not sure when 1.5 will roll out.  Has anyone else had this problem? If so how should I handle this?

The plug-in works well in my experience.
If you are having playback issues, it's quite possibly drive-related: if media has been imported to your systems drive, instead use an external drive;  if the drive ( internal and/or external ) is too full and has slowed as a result; if the connection is via USB rather than Firewire. Other possibilities, but assuming you're playing a single stream, those are reasonable places to start looking.
Good luck.

Is there a plugin for FCPX Ver 10.0.7, I found one for FCP 7  but that doesn't work. I also downloaded The Canon XF Utility but although this opens the clips from the camera I am unable to get the clips into FCPX.
    Fred,
Sorry, I mis-spoke. I do have Canon Utility installed on my SL machine, but have used it mainly as a file review interface and as a backup utility. My MXF files are then brought in via Log & Transfer in FCP 7, which requires one of the plug-ins (and as you noted, does not work with FCPX).
In the majority of situations I'm ingesting on location to a MBP running Lion. In that case, I have the option of importing them either into FCP7 or FCPX.
A came across this hack for  getting the Canon plug-in to install on SL. It looks straightforward but I haven't tried it, so if you do, proceed at your risk. As for me, my plans are to partition my drive later this month and boot from both 10.6 and 10.7 as necessary.
    Good luck.

  • IMovie 11 and Canon XF Codec used in Canon XF300 and 305

Does anyone know if iMovie11 will support the new video codec Canon is using their just-released professional camcorders, the XF200 and 305?
    Canon's description states:
"Canon's adaptation of MPEG-2 for the XF305 Professional Camcorder, named the Canon XF Codec, ensures the widest compatibility with existing industry infrastructure and non-linear editing (NLE) systems. And by using an MXF file wrapper, video and audio can be wrapped in a single file along with important metadata. The codec's 50Mbps constant bit rate provides the bandwidth needed to capture the XF305's superior resolution and color in spectacular detail."
    Thank you.

No, it will not work in iMovie.
This is a bit of a mismatch. A $7500 camera with a $20 editing app.
You can edit with this camera using Final Cut Pro and ProRes422 intermediate codec.

Having said that, if you have Final Cut Pro installed on, say, a Mac Pro with a fast eSata drive array, it might be worth trying in iMovie, just to see. But you would need FCP just to get the codec.

  • Canon HV20 and FCPX

I'm still using the Canon HV20 camcorder and Final Cut Pro 6. Capturing footage from the HV20 requires a slighly compllicated process of capturing the video in FCP6 and then converting it in Compressor in order to edit it on a ProRes timeline.
Does any one have any experience using an HV20 camcording with Final Cut Pro X? Could you tell me what your workflow has been? Thanks.

Download MPEG Streamclip and use it to convert your MPEG-2 footage to ProRes 422.
MPEG Streamclip allows you to set in and out points and only convert the footage you want for editing, but it's wise to keep the originals (just in case).
Once your footage is transcoded (with minimal re-compression) it will be a breeze to edit and colour correct.

  • How to match custom profile of PMW-350K and Canon XF300

Not exacctly a Premiere Pro question, but neither does it belong in the Lounge.
We will be shooting the Heineken Regatta on Sint Maarten in March. We have two cameras, a Canon XF300 and a Sony PMW-350K with the standard 16x Fujinon lens.
What is the simplest way to match the custom profiles for both cameras, so that color correction in post will be avoided to the largest degree possible?

There is custom preset on videocopilot for matching the EX1 and the Canon XH A1. Maybe it could be of some help.
http://www.videocopilot.net/blog/2009/07/start-the-montage/#comments Scroll on this page and you will see the preset.
    Hope this helps

  • Glitches on .mxf files - Canon XF300

We shoot on a Canon XF300 and recently I opened up a project and realized that all the footage on one card is filled with horizontal "glitches" that pop randomly throughout the screen. It seems to be on the actual footage because it exists even when viewing through the Canon XF Utility and opening in multiple programs. Unfortunately the CF card was formatted long ago for this project and the glitches went unnoticed after dumping the card and backing it up. I only just noticed as I sat down to start editing. It seems to get worse as I move through the files on that same card. The second card used that day has no glitches. Has anyone encountered this before and have a fix? I feel like the problem is on the actual  footage. Maybe the card was corrupt?

  • Purple & Green Lines from Footage Taken on Canon XF300

    Hey guys,
I am currently working on a project with a Canon XF300. I have taken all the footage that I need, but when I import the files onto my Mac I am getting purple and green lines over parts of the footage (see image). When playing the footage directly on a TV with a HDMI cable these do not appear, so I am assuming it has something to do with the format. I have converted the MXF files to various other formats, but the problem has not disappeared. I have tested the footage in various media playback suites and imported the converted files into FCPX, but the problem still persists.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem as I really need to get this footage edited as there is quite a time constraint on it? I would really appreciate the help as I have been struggling with this for a number of days now.
    Cheers,
    Jeremiah.

I'd endorse the Applecare with this one. However before you do, try turning the tv off and on while the tv is playing.

  • Have Apple built a Plug-In to enable capture of Canon XF300 50Mb/Sec Clips

The new Canon XF300 & XF305 series Cameras require a Plug-In to be able to capture the HD clips @ 50Mb/sec as I understand Apple had not produced a Plug-In up until about 2 months ago, has anyone any idea when Apple may be releasing a Plug-In for this problem, or is there a third party tool to assist available ?
    Regards

Apple didn't...Canon did. It is available on their website....just gotta look for it. For some reason they don't ship it with the camera.
Look up the camera on their site and then look for the plugin. I was told it was there, by Canon, at a trade show.

  • Nikon D7100 and FCPX

    Hi,
I am trying to understand if FCPX is able to work with the RAW H264 file coming from a Nikon D7100.
I'm using FCPX since it came out, I know it is able to work with H264 file like the one coming from a Canon D5,
but I read that the H264 file from a Nikon D7100 is for some reason "different" from a "normal" H264 and FCPX does not support it.
I know I can compress it to a ProRes, (outside FCPX with compressor), but I want to know if I can use the amazing ability of FCPX to work with RAW files and compress it later.
    Thank you.

You would probably find more direct help by talking to other Nikon shooters who use FCPX. M
I don't know anything about the Nikon codec or why it might be giving you trouble while others do not but have you tried simply transcoding the footage to ProRes422? Your files will expand by a factor or three or four but you will not have these difficulties.

  • Importing error AE CC: "MXFF" is damaged or unsupported Canon XF300

After shooting on Canon's XF300, I get an error while importing the footage.
Premiere Pro reads the native footage without any issues, but if I open a AE and try importing the raw footage, I get an error?
Is After Effects CC not compatible with footage shot on the Canon XF300? I don't see why it wouldn't?

    Thanks.

As Todd says, that's not the latest version. You are one whole version number behind.
But that's not even the latest version of AE 12. The latest version is 12.2.1.5

  • Audio garbled on import from Canon XA10 to FCPX

I'm running the current FCPX on the current Yosemite OS on a maxed out Late 2012 Mac Mini.  Just bought a Canon XA10 and recorded HiDef clips to the internal HD.  During recording I monitored the audio on headphones and it was good.  When I play back the clips on the camera, again the audio is good.  But when I import them to FCPX the audio is garbled.  You can make out the sync comments but the audio is terrible, not anywhere close to what I heard outside of FCPX.  First I imported all 12 clips.  Then I tried just importing 1 clip to a different Library.  Even tried exporting a .mov from the project and playing it on Quicktime. Always same result. Canon, Mac or FCPX problem?  Thanks!

With the current footage you are using I cannot think of a reason why FCP X is messing with the audio.
    Things to try:
Shoot more footage on a different card with different settings. Avoid mixing different types of footage on the one card/storage device.
Try adjusting Project audio settings in FCP X e.g.. 5.1 to stereo, stereo to dual mono etc.
Tinker until you hit a workable combination if you are lucky.
BTW: I searched the FCP X forum and there is info regarding the XA10 and capturing, some good and bad reports but nothing definitive.
At least a few users have had success with that camera using FCP X.

  • Working With Canon XF300 Files

    Hi everyone,
I rented a Canon XF300 for a live event shoot yesterday, and now I am trying to get the footage into an editable form. The two hour event was broken up into numerous .mxf files (The container file that the Canon XF300). My main concern is how to merge those separate files into one large 1.5 hour file, to make the editing process smoother. Does anyone have any suggestions? I am using the CS suite for this job, but I also have FCP7 on my system, in case the workflow involves that software...
    Thanks in advance!
    Joel G.

I'm faced with a similar problem as the OP. I can't find a way to join 2 or 3 clips together so a sequence can be edited as one. I'm on PP 5.0.3.
Apparently (and I can't confirm this) for Panasonic P2 files, Premiere works out which clips are supposed to be contiguous (using the metadata) and joins or merges them in some way.
This does not appear to be the case for Canon XF300/305 MXF clips.
Has anyone come across a workflow for joining or merging MXF clips for use in PP 5/5.5?

  • Canon XF300 files importing without video track

When I import files from my Canon XF300, either directly off the card or from a duplicate of the card on my hard drive, only the audio tracks come in. I've tried doing the import from Media Browser and from the import dialog with the same results for both. The video files work fine in Canon's XF Utility and on the camera itself.
I tested this with another set of videos--some work and some don't. I have no idea what's making one set of files work and others not. I have one older project from when XF300 import did work for me, and one of those files has since changed to just showing audio on its own. What's going on here? I've tried Adobe phone support but it's impossible to get ahold of anyone as the callback system doesn't work properly (calls you back and then puts you on hold for 20+minutes.)
I really need to get thsi working as its for a project and it's frustrating as there are no errors. I've tried re-installing Premiere Pro with no success.

Doesn't look like Beyond Compare has a mac version, so I used Diff to check the differences. The only thing that was different was in the XMP files, which much be something Premiere makes?
Here's the output of diff -rc in one specific folder:
