Capturing HDCAM

I am trying to capture HDCAM from a HDW-1800. I am using a Blackmagic Deck link HD card, but I can't get the video to show up.
It is 1080 59.94, and I have tried all of the 59.94 presets with no result.
Even taking the SD down conversion [SDI], I can't bring an image up in the capture window.
Thanks.
JNC

If you take the Downconvert (or HD SDI) output directly into a monitor do you see it?
I would troubleshoot starting at the deck and work my way over to FCP
That way you can verify at what point the signal is getting lost.
The most common causes are incorrect settings in FCP.
You should be using the Blackmagic HDTV 1080i 59.94 - 8bit Easy setup to capture.
You might also check your audio video settings capture preset to make sure it's looking for your decklink card and not something else.

  • Capturing HDCAM in 4x3 NTSC DV project

i have a HDCAM tape with some great footage that I'm trying to capture and play in my 4x3 NTSC DV project. I would love the HDCAM stuff to play
at its native 16 x 9. What settings should I use to make this happen?
    HDCAM specs are:
    1080 active line
    16x9 aspect ratio
    59.94 Hz field frequency
    My project is
    NTSC - DV
    29.97 frames per second
    compressor is  DV/DVC-PRO NTSC
    and I'm on FCP 7

DV NTSC Anamorphic.  Because there is no SD 16x9 full raster format.

Not sure whether you're looking for advice on capture settings or editing. If you've successfully captured the HDCAM footage and want to edit clips into a DV sequence and have the display properly, then adjusting scale in the motion tab to reduce the image size should produce a letterboxed 16:9 image within an SD fame.
According to your signature, you're running FCP7 on a PPC machine? Didn't think that was possible.

  • Capturing HDCAM to SD FORMAT

    Here is the deal.
I have 16x9 HD quality footage off of HDCAM tape.
I'm trying to down convert to 16x9 SD format.
    Things I tried:
I tried capturing under SD format w/ a kona card, but it comes out 4x3
I also tried to capture it 16x9 HD to SD setting on FCP. It really doesn't work
I also tried 23.98PD but it slows down the frame. (Slow Motion)
Lastly, I tried 25, 24 and it doesn't even come up on the screen. I tried the firewire port to pulldown and even anamorphic settings.
I need to capture this in the most efficient way to down convert 16x9 HD to 16x9 SD

Go into the Kona Control Panel and change your Frame Buffer to 525I. Then the incoming signal should say DOWNCONVERT. And you can downconvert, but you cannot change the frame rate. One or the other....not both at the same time.

  • HDCAM offline capture - what capture preset?

    Good Afternoon.
I am new to offline editing and will be working with some HDCAM footage soon.
I am confused as to how I should capture the tapes to work offline. The FCP manual suggests using OfflineRT, but elsewhere I'm being told to use DVCPRO HD.
What are the deciding factors in choosing how to capture HD footage for low-quality offfline editing?
    Much thanks for any tips.

The manual makes the rescaling process from offline to online sound very straightforward. But I suppose this wouldn't be the first time a manual made a task sound easy.
Ask this man how easy the SD offline to HD online is...he isn't having fun:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1158547&tstart=50
    There will be only titles.
    Perfect then...no issues.
Only a few tapes. The finished video will only be about 3 minutes....1 TB RAID, via fiber optic network.
Perfect...you have plenty of space. For both online and offline.
I don't have a HD monitor, only SD. Will I need one for offlining with DVCPRO HD? Not sure if an SD monitor can play downconvered HD somehow.
If you have a capture card (which you need to capture HDCAM as DVCPRO HD) then monitoring on an SD monitor is a snap. All of the capture cards downconvert to SD no problem...so you can use the monitor to at least see your footage.

  • DVCPRO HD project with HDCAM

Hi there. If anyone can give me some pointers on this i'd really appreciate it.
I'm just about to start editing a documentary project which we shot entirely on DVCPRO HD at 1080i 25p. I'm intending to cut this natively in the DVCPRO HD codec after capturing via my KONA 3.
The problem i have is that some footage I need to complete the edit which is being dubbed direct from a feature project is being delivered in HDCAM format.
What would be the best format for me to digitise this footage in to enable me to work with it in the DVCPRO HD project as seamlessly as possible? Can i capture HDCAM through the KONA and cross convert to DVCPRO HD??
This may be a simple one, but I'm new to the KONA 3 and mixed format HD projects so help would be very much appreciated!
    thanks
    Alex

    DVCPRO HD 1080i 50 or 25.

  • HDCAM 23.98 (24p) to DV 23.98 (24p)

Is it possible to capture DV 23.98 (24p) from Sony DIGIBETA VTR from a HDCAM tape at 23.98 (24p)?

Well, you aren't going to be able to. Digibeta decks play all formats of SD beta...digibeta, betaSP, beta. HDCAM is a HIGH DEFINITION format. You are going to have to get an HDCAM deck to play this. The JH-3 is an HDCAM player only that will do this.
But capture as DV? I think that has firewire out, so you might be able to. I haven't done it...I have captured HDCAM as DVCPRO HD, but thru the use of a capture card.
Bottom line, you need an HDCAM player.

  • Imac for  HDcam non-linear editing

Hi, I'm using Imac with latest final cut studio. I need to do simple editing from HD cam source.
Unfortunately I cannot afford to buy mac pro and aja kona3..etc.
I would like to know the best option to capture HDcam source and edit with final cut pro.
    Thnaks in advance.

As I said, once the IOHD is connected to the computer, it dominates the firewire bus. The iMac might have more than one firewire connection, but only one bus. So that is now used, and you cannot connect a firewire drive to the iMac for capturing to. And USB is out...not usable for video capture.
KiPro attaches to the CAMERA...and is a recording device. It will take the feed from the camera and record directly to ProRes. Then you can drag and drop that footage into FCP. It is not an IO device between the camera and FCP.
Does your MacBook Pro have an EXPRESS34 slot? The newer ones do not, except for the 17" model. If so, the the MXO2 LE would be your ticket. FAR CHEAPER than the IOHD too. But the IOHD would work on the MacBook Pro too... just get an Express34 Firewire adapter and you are in business. And the IOHD converts to ProRes, where the MXO2 line does not...it relies on the computer to do the encoding, and they do not support anything other than 720p 23.98 ProRes on laptops. It can work, I have captured 1080i 29.97 ProRes on mine... it just isn't "supported," meaning it may or may not work.

  • Capturing beyond out point

I'm capturing HDcam footage with RS 422 timecode.
I set in and out points, create clip then batch capture.
For some reason, FCP is ignoring my out point and won't stop capturing until I abort.
The TC is 29.97, matching the capture settings.
    I've trashed my plist.
    Any ideas?

Well, Dean. One thing you can do is check the capture settings and make sure that you have a frame rate selected. Otherwise the capture window won't recognize a video device.
That, and quit writing posts to yourself.

  • Final Cut Express as Offline - Final Cut Studio 2 as Online?

Is it possible to use FInal Cut Express for offline editing and then replace the media with HD versions for online editing in Final Cut Pro?
    Example of our proposed Workflow:
    1. Capture HDCam footage from CineAlta Camera into Final Cut Studio 2 at DVCProHD 1080i60.
    2. Use Media Manager to create a copy of the project while downconverting media to DV.
    3. Transfer project folder to other Mac running FC Express. Create FCE project file and create an edit using DV footage.
    (here's where I'm uncertain)
    4. Can FC Express export EDL's or in some way get that edit back into FC Pro, where I can relink back to the DVCProHD media?
Thanks to anyone who can help with this.
    Message was edited by: cvc1968.mac

Well, I gained access to a computer running FCE 4 and created a test project. When I try to open in in FCP 6.0.1 I get a message stating that the file format is "too new" for this version of FCP.
I guess I need to try FCE HD 3.5, but it will not run on any computer without an AGP graphics card.
This shouldn't be this troublesome, should it?

  • Ghosting Problem in HD project (shot with Sony HDW-F900)

Hi, I'm having a problem with 'ghosting,' at least I think that's the word for it. Essentially when there is motion in the frame, I see the previous frame sort of 'on top of it,' resulting in 'motion trails.' Can anyone suggest how to fix this?
Here are my settings...project was shot with Sony HDW-F900 HDCAM 24p
    720x480 NTSC DV
Pixel Aspect Ratio: NTSC CCIR 601 / DV 720x480
    Frame Rate 23.98
    Compessor: DVCPRO HD 1080i60
Render all YUV material in high-precision YUV
    Process Maximum White as: White
    Motion Filtering Quality: Best
Filters, Frame Blending for Speed, and Motion Blur are checked
    Any help would be great...thanks!
    G5 Quad   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

when you capture hdcam shot at 23.98 you need to come in HDSDI and the deck set to 23.98. If you have the deck set to 23.98PD you'll be getting 29.97 tc down the 422 control not 23.98. If you use the PD setting and the dvcproHD 1080i60 you get footage with pulldown, the cadence being set by the 24 frame, 30 frame, options in the menus of the deck. these should be set so evry second on the second the time code matches. Sony actually uses 23.98 timecode in 1080Psf. Your rental house should be able to provide a workflow for you. My guess is the ghosting is not ghosting but interfield motion, now that you are not in a progressive format.

  • Cutting in DVCPRO HD

I've been looking into DVCPRO HD as a compression to cut our HDCAM footage in and just need some feedback.
We're working on FCP Studio 2 and After Effects CS3 on a Raid 5 SAN and we're capturing with KONA3.
Does FCP allow us to capture HDCAM footage with DVCPRO HD compression upon ingest? Shane Ross, I know you work with DVCPRO HD; what's your experience with it; or anyone else for that matter? Have you had any trouble with the format? Do you use a different compression when working with it? Does DVCPRO HD material work well when bringing it from FCP to AE and back and other such programs? How does it compare to working with native HDCAM material?
Basically, I'm just trying to find out if it's a viable compression to work with and find any possible pitfalls. I've done a lot of reading on it but I need to know an editor's and graphic artist's experience with it.
    Thanks.

We shot for three months on a HDV cam (Z1U) and its LONG GOP format was too difficult to deal with in post and with round trips to AE.
We switched to a HVX200 and shoot almost exclusively 720/24pNative.
We use DVCProHD footage in all of Adobe's Production suite programs that apply, and with Motion, LT, FCP, and a variety of 3rd party utilities.
One of the simplest codecs to work with, and easy to edit. Titling and FX are far superior than HDV. Don't know about HDCAM.
However, it you are capturing via Kona3, stay with prores.

  • Unable to capture HD 1080 video from HDCAM deck using Decklink HD

I have an original decklink HD capture card with SDI I/O. I have a rented Sony HDCAM F500 deck for the weekend. I can not get FCP to digitize even a frame. All my QT, FCP, OSX and Decklink software is up to date and compatible with one another acording to Decklink's website.
The capture tool shows no video input. I am conecting via SDI from the HD output of the deck to the SDI input on the card, the capture settings are set to the HD format I need to work in, 23.98 PsF. I get the error mesage when I select the setting I want: Unable to locate the capture device Blackmagic HDTV 1080. Your system config may have changed or your deck/camera may be disconnected or turned off.
The system will work in SD using the downconvert output of the deck, but this does me no good on this job. I hope someone has experience with this problem and can help because I am out of ideas!

sorry mate, if I was in the office I would try to help troubleshoot this thing, but here at home its a bit pointless.
other than suggesting you check that you really do have an Declink HD card an not the Declink SD card, or th epossiblity the card may be faulty, the best I can offer is to point you to the Decklink forum at the Cow.
    http://forums.creativecow.net/cgi-bin/newviewposts.cgi?forumid=124
have you tried to capture any other HD flavour with this card? how about capturing via the downcoverted SD and using the card to upconvert to HD? (this is not a suggested workflow, just trying to ascertain whether the card is working in HD at all)

  • Onlilne HDCAM edit - what sequence/capture settings?

    Good Afternoon,
We have completed the offline edit of a 3 minute video that was shot on HDCAM,then edited using low-res Photo JPEG.
Using Media Manager we are planning to create a duplicate sequence to use to capture and connect the clips to the HDCAM footage.
What sequence settings do we use and what capture preset do we use? The manual isn't very clear on this.
    Thanks!

That's the card...not the drives. What DRIVES do you have? What DRIVE ARRAY? The card will be fast enough...if the raid array attached to it is fast enough.
How fast is it? I don't know...you need to test that out. Use the AJA Kona System Test application found here:

  • HDCAM capture with KONA LH. Recomended storage.

    Hi all
I am about to undertake capturing and editing footage from a HDCAM source. I am used to working with Uncompressed SD footage normally from DIGIBeta, capturing using a AJA kona LH card with KONA KLbox connecting decks, etc. The computer is a 4 x 2.5 GHz PowerPC G5.
I can hire in relevant HDcam deck. Was planning to capture via SDI, using the AJA KONA 1080i 25 10bit (1080 50i is what the footage is recorded in). I believe they want to deliver it the same way, so hope to not do any down conversion for editing.
My main concern is storage. Normally when we work in 625 25 10bit setting we just capture onto externall drives conected via Firewire800. I believe however this would not be a fast enough connection when working with 1080i. If so can anyone recomend a decent solution which is on the cost effective side?
I am also wondering about the AJA Kona 1080i 25 ProRess (HQ) setting. Is this meant to be a loss-less compression, reducing file size whilst still maintaining HD resolution? Will this work with the current Firewire800 storage connection, as the file sizes, data rate, will be reduced? Bear in mind the program is for broadcast.
Any suggestion will be very much appreciated.
    Neil

For UNCOMPRESSED you will need SERIOUS fast storage. Talking at LEAST eSATA, but really something like MiniSAS or Fibre. CalDigit VR or GRaid 3 via eSATA will work. up to 2TB. Or you can look into the HD One from them, or the EVO HD from MaxxDigital. Firewire won't cut it anymore for Uncompressed.
HOWEVER...prores is pretty lossless...compresses well. And you can capture that to firewire 800, or internal SATA drives. Caldigit VR will work, as will G-RAID 3. But it might be a good time to get good solid RAID 5 storage...so a tower like the maxxDigital or Caldigit ones.
