Carbonite is dangerous to your file health!!

A couple years ago when I was losing data due to Time Machine failures, I went to the Genius Bar at the local Apple Store. They didn't have any suggestions for me about Time Machine, but the Genius suggested I try Carbonite.
I did so and for a while I was quite satisfied.
For the last six months and longer, it constantly fails me in not doing backups. Iget things going and after a while I just assume it is going OK as there are no status warnings or error reports. I guess I'm stupid tht way. But when I check its status I find one or the other of these problems. Sometimes I find that it says it cannot connect to my backup or there is something wrong with it. Other times, such as today, when I log into my online account with Carbonite (BTW, I purchased a subscription for it that is good until Sept 2014), it tells me Online Backup is OVERDUE. Last backed up June 13, 2013. Today is June 27, 2013 for those of you who read this later. The backup is 14 days out of date! The status page on System Preferences shows that 42 GB of files are awaiting backup and 132 GB of files are in the backup. When I opened the System Preference pages, it showed Carbonite as IDLE! After I opened my Account in Safari through the button in System Preferences, it now says Backup in Progress.
Why, you may be asking, did I put such an alarmist subject on my post? I have encountered this situation (either one or the other) AT LEAST MONTHLY for the last SIX MONTHS. I have repeatedly contacted Carbonite Support and asked what I can do. THEY HAVE PERSISTENTLY IGNORED MY REQUEST (at least I have received ZERO responses).
If a paid service such as Carbonite does not respond to help request filed through the HELP link on the System Preferences page on my iMac and US Based Support is advertised as part of what I paid for, I find that at least half the time my files are not being backed up. Why should I continue to use it. For the moment mostly because I paid a special rate for 3 years of service.
Being in teh business for a while, this is not my only backup strategy. I also have Time Machine running regularly. While TM has worked at times for me in the past, I have had it collalsally fail when I needed to restore a systm. The worst case was two years ago, when my iMac failed completely. Apple Care replace about everything. The power supply, the video unit, the mother board and a few other things. The iMac doesn't have a lot of parts. I've seen the inside of mine when the repairman was ehre. Finally they replaced the entire computer. However, i then discovered that as I had just moved to LION before the failure, that the TM files from Snow Leopard which constituted most of my backup were not compatible with Lion Migrate Utility and there was no way to migrate from my TM backup to my brand new but empty computer. Apple offered me nothing. I got a new machine but appeared to have lost my data.
What I finally did was after my old computer had rested for a month or so and Apple was bugging me about returning it, I turned in on again and it worked long enough for me to backup my user files from teh internal HD to an external HD which I then could load on my new machine.
My next worst TM tale was in teh first six months after I mvoed to MAC. I had regularly backed up via TM to a Time Capsule attached to my iMac. When I needed to do a major restore, it told me that the backup was corrupt. There appear to be no tools to rescue a corrupt backup. That may be in part the use of Sparse Bundles, I don't know. I have rescued data on an external drive that had some corruption on it by using disk tools that did the job. Under Windows, I even wrote programs to read the disk and write it to new files reading at a low level. But my knowledge of OS X does not go far enough to do this kind of rescue. I ahve even had a data recovery company rescue a disk that was unmountable. That was expensive.
I have found after years of experience that any method that requires me to manually intervene regularly to do the back ups always ceases to get done just before a failure. I need an automated approach.
What do people recomend? How do I make sure the Time Machine continues to work and is restorable. Anyone know how I can get a service like Carbonite to keep working and get the service for which I paid.
From Time to Time, I owuld like to do a periodic full backup for safety to an external disk which I will set aside. What is the best tool for doing that. From now on, when upgrading OS X, I want a full backup so that I don't get in that Snow Leopard to Lion fiasco. We have Mavericks announced for this fall I believe, so I want to get ready for that.

I particularly appreciate your suggestion of SuperDuper. Reading its documentation, I find it more what I want than CCC. With CCC I have to pretnd to be in a certain backup model even when I simply want to copy. In that way SuperDuper appears to be more what I want.
I am reconsidering my entire back up strategy and am considering basing it on SuperDuper plus Time Machine. For short term work, the ability to recover this morning's or last Tuesday's version of a file that I've either deleted by mistake or edited beyong repair is truly great and I tend to depend on it. TM has never failed me in that situation except the time the disk structure became corrupted. As I am unable to trace any issue in that situation to problems with my files (the system as it existed on the day I tried to recover stuff passed all the DiskUtility verify and repair operations), I'm guessing that some hiccup in the sparse bundle writes being done by TM may have caused something to fail. If that is the case and if there is not a recovery proedure for that, I fear TM may be too fragile. A utility which could scan a TM backup and discover file fragments for recovery and provide the ability to write those fragement somewhere on another disk or even allow searching for parts of files could be really useful.
My new strategy will most likely be based on periodic full disk copies to disks stored offline (and possibly offsite though in my case I need to figure out how to do that as I do not have another site nor do I want to spend a fortune on storage. Less than a cubic yard of storage would be plenty but normally I need to rent enough space to pack my living room in and that costs on the order of $1000 a year.
My system lets me connect 2.5" or 3.5" hard drives into a Voyager unit from Other World Computing (MacSales.com) provies an excelant high performance disk copy platform using my Mac and a Firewire 800 connection.Being on an iMac, I don't have an eSATA interface for the best speed and the Voyager is not yet available with Thunderbolt.
So doing periodic system copies this way, the question of my intermediate needs. Can I count on TM for that purpose? Possibly.
Is it possible to backup a Time Machine backup to an external drive for offsite storage and restore it later. As TMuses a Sparse Bundle approach I don't know how to copy and restore such a 'file' in a way that is still usable fo restoring.
The SuperDuper people have a couple of nice white papers on back up solutions but I don't think they deal with this part although I'm still reading it. Anyone know of an online discussion that would be worth checking out or any books that are good for Mac OS X back up strategies?

you will need:
-a pocket lamp or comparable light (to see anything on your sreen when it is dark --> light from the back through apple logo)
-coconutbattery (coconut-flavour.com/coconutbattery) or comparable programm to track your battery information in realtime
-activity monitor
-cool enviroment (to ensure your fans don't have to work that much)
-some time and patience
the intructions:
step1: load your mac until the orange light turns green
step2: disconnect the power adapter
step3: use your mac until 15-25% battery life (track this information in your menu bar)
step4: slow down your activities. the order of the following actions depend on your usage of your mac:
__close programms that use lots of cpu/gpu to ensure the fans slow down to 0rpm (!!)
__turn off everything that needs battery power: airport / bluetooth / speakers / etc.
__eject dvd or cd
__close all programms with important data
__eject idisk / .dmg files in your finder (this is not only a matter of data security)
__dissonnected from peripherals such as ethernet / internet / mouse / keyboard
__use lower brightness level
__open activity monitor to ensure that your hard drive activity is very low, may be you need to close more active programms, close activity monitor when hard drive activity is very low
__open system preferences >> energy saver preferences >> choose longest battery life
when your are ready with those actions go on and ensure you are able to connect to power adapter with your mac quickly (be able to charge - don't do it yet!)
step5: be patient. now it should take some time until your battery level goes down to 3-5%
now there should be no programm running.
do not open any programm now!
do not have a look at your dashboard!
now your mac should be really quiet:
-no fans (0rpm!)
-nearly no hard drive activity!!
-->> if this not the case break go on with step 11&12, try again in a week or two
-->> if you are ready go on with step6
step6: open coconutbattery und use the lowest brightness level
play with your trackpad to ensure your screensaver won't start. waste time until you are at 1-2% battery life.
step7: take your lamp and spot through the transperent apple logo, position your coconut battery window somehow that you can see the current battery charge und the maxium battery charge in the spot of your lamp through the apple logo.
step8: go from the lowest brightness level to the level under the lowest brightness level (a dark screen)
step9: watch your current battery charge carefully und keep on playing with your trackpad to ensure your screensaver won't start.
step10: there is kind of battery buffer made of approximately 1% (once when my "current battery charge" was 3624mAh and this kind of buffer was at 36mAh)
to empty this kind of battery buffer takes much longer as you might expect!
when your current battery charge turns under this kind of battery buffer, your maximum battery charge should change. hopefully it is higher or stays the same. when it is lower now: i'm sorry - i have warned you. may be you have to go through this 'how to' more carefully!?
step11: plug in your power adapter before the battery is cero!
step12: load until the orange light turns green
step13: if it was helpful do not repeat it more than once a week, better once a month

Me too! My battery lasts for 10 minutes. It is awful and I am on my 4th power adapter since they keep breaking too.

Actually, I found this to be one of the best advantages of using bash is that it forces a user to think about file organization and making useful naming schemes for files.
For example, instead of having 1000+ media files in one directory I subcategorize theme by genre or whatever, and then probably subcategorize them again.
Then I usually rename the files to something meaningful, like if I have 50 pictures of my kids birthday, just do a for each loop on the directory and rename all the files donovan_birthdayX.jpg where X is an integer incrementation.
essentially. just don't "have files cluttered all throughout you hard drive and folders all over". and your life will be much happier regardless of how you manage your files.

Based on the error message, it seems that the Visio Graphics Service is not started or the Enterprise feature is not enabled.
I recommend to check the things below:
Go to Central Administration > System Settings > Manage service on server > check if the Visio Graphics Service is started > then click Application Management > Manage service applications > check if the Visio Graphics Service application
is created.
Go to the root site settings page of the site where you got this error, click Site collection features to check if the SharePoint Server Enterprise Site Collection Features is enabled.
Go to the site settings page of the site where you got this error, click Manage site feature to check if the SharePoint Server Enterprise Site Features is enabled.

Look at your iphoto 'page'. On the left is a margin running vertically down the page and within that margin are shown your files/folders - e.g 'events', I can't get that margin contents back

Now visualize the 'page' but WITHOUT the margin and the entries in it. It just disappeared while I was editing photos.
I've tried all the 'File', 'Edit', 'View', 'Share' 'Window' & 'Help' options, but no success.
There is no apparent way of calling up onto the screen any photos, folders etc. because I can't get the margin and its contents back onto the iphoto page.
I've tried restoring the page from my backup, where it is all perfect, but that didn't work.
Help please!

"Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings." Why?

I saved my files and settings from a previous installation of windows 7 to an external hard drive using windows easy transfer. Now when I try to transfer those files and setting to my new installation I get the following message:
Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer your files and settings.
The message pops up only a few seconds after the transfer begins.
Why is this?! I need those files and windows has screwed me. Everything is basically the same as before I reinstalled. Same computer, same windows 7 installation just recovered to factory settings. Same system language as before. BTW I'm on a Toshiba L505 laptop
running Windows 7 Home Premium.
I have tried all the usual suspects such as a clean boot and uninstalling my antivirus to rule out third party interference. I have more than enough space on both my computer and on the external hard drive. I have tried only transferring a user account a
few MBs large. I have reinstalled the OS twice just in case something went wrong there. I have clicked on the .MIG file directly. All lead to the same error message.The transfer file seems to be intact and not currupt
Is there another software other than WET that can use the same transfer file that WET created to restore my files? Please help me solve this if you can or at least point me in the right direction because right now I'm clueless. I can't emphasize how important
those files are to me. I've searched for solutions on several forums and it seems that this is a problem people have been having for years now and windows hasn't provided an answer yet.
An interesting note, When I reboot the laptop after trying to do the transfer, a new user account appears at startup alongside the one I normally use. This new user account has the same unique name of the user account I am trying to restore but that's where
the similarity ends. All the settings for this account are default settings and empty folders. What does this mean?

Well, I finally gave up. I've scoured the internet for a solution. You'll probably find duplicates of this post all over. This has been a known software problem with Windows Easy Transfer for years and Microsoft has done nothing to fix it or warn users of
the risks. Shameful!

Just remember to change the source drive letter in "C:\SaveData.MIG" to the actual drive it's stored on if your MIG file is on an external drive like mine was; whether it's E:, F:, G: or whatever.

Some problems can indeed be fixed this way. But working from Recovery_HD or Disk Warrior DVDs and working in the restricted environment those provide can be difficult. You can literally spend days working on this problem (while your regular work is unavailable) only to discover the old drive is unsalvageable.
There is no way to know up front whether you are facing a major Hardware failure or a minor software glitch, or something in between. Often you are forced to work from the drive you no longer trust. I continue to recommend you do this work from a different, fully functioning Mac OS X booted from a different drive.
If you have had the foresight to (as The hatter often recommends) clone your virgin install onto another drive for use in such situations, you will be able to recover from such problems in record time. If not, my previous recommendations stands:
Buy a new Drive. Or two. Install Mac OS X from scratch on a new drive, and get your Mac running again. Later, you can use the full power of Mac OS X to attempt to rescue your data, if needed. Then Zero the old drive, to see if it can hold data again reliably.
If the old drive eventually provides some needed data, and is salvageable, Merry Christmas.

My macbook pro froze and initially would not even recognize the power chord. Now it charges, but will not load up. I opened in in disk utility to try and back it up so that I could take it to apple to have it fixed but I got the message that said "disk utility can't repair this disk backup as many of your files as possible". How do I back up the files???

you can try the method described on this Apple page, in the “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility” section. (You can skip step 6, since you already know that your disk is irreparable.) Note, however, that this method is not guaranteed to work. Once you get your disk straightened out, you might consider purchasing an external hard disk for use as a Time Machine backup destination, so that a similar problem in the future won’t wipe out the only copy of your files.

Cansomeone please tell me what the simplest way is to backup your files from you Mac and then completely restore it back to when I first bought it? I do not want to download or purchase any software, and I would like to keep my important files-pics, music

I just would like to completely reset my MAC. I dont want to have to download or purchase a software to download, and I dont quite understand what the time machine is supposed to do if you have not been told to use if before. Shouldn't mac have some type of in home software already installed? And how can I completely restore my mac back to its original system?

1: Connect a external powered drive like a Firewire or USB drive. If you question the drive format or need to format it, first do that in Disk Utility before transfering any files to the drive. MSDOS, FAT32 or exFAT is best for any Windows or Mac to access the files.
2: Transfer your files manually by dragging and dropping your Users Folders like Pictures, Movies, Documents and Music (do not use TimeMachine!!) Eject the drive and disconnect from the computer.
3: Next insert the cd that came with your computer and reboot holding c
4: Two screens in is a menu option called "Utilities" select Disk Utility.
5: On the left is your internal boot drive, select it and Erase > Format HFS+ Journaled > Security Option > Zero All Data. Wait about a hour or so until it's finished.
6: When it's done, quit and your back in the installer again, install OS X and when finished, shut down.
The next time the computer reboots, it will go through the "welcome" video and the initial setup, just like a new Mac.

"Sorry, we couldn't find your file. Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?" Error with SharePoint 2013 and Office Web Apps

When I try to open any docx file from the SharePoint it opens on web via office web apps, and when I choose edit document > edit in Word , Microsoft word show me this error "Sorry, we couldn't find your file.
Is it possible it was moved, renamed or deleted?" followed by half a url to the end users document on onedrive.
I noted that this problem only happens with Docx files, with specific users and only when you try to open the Docx file from OneDrive folder ( SkyDrive ) which is hosted in the MySite.
Any Help?

According to your post, my understanding is that you failed to open the Docx file from OneDrive folder ( SkyDrive ).
Since this problem only happens with Docx files, with specific users, I recommend to delete and recreate the personal site for the specific users.

Virus Detected (403), Your file could not be uploaded because it contains a virus.

From a Windows 7 Ultimate PC I tried to upload a PDF portfolio containing 35 PDFs. The upload failed with the message "Virus Detected (403), Your file could not be uploaded because it contains a virus."
It is highly unlikely that this PDF portfolio or its 35 PDFs contain a virus. It passed a scan by Microsoft Security Essentials. Any suggestions?

How to get to your files when your Time Capsule dies :(

I am posting this here to help someone who cannot access a Time Machine backup because
the backup was "corrupted"
the <insert whatever obscure message that contains the word "sparsebundle" here> message appears
the Time Machine won't open up your backups
the Time Capsule dies
First of all, I absolutly am a fan of Time Machine and Time Capsule. And they work great ... until they don't - and that is when panic sets in. I haven't had a Time Capsule die on me (because I remembered to enter a "Remember to get a new Time Capsule" event for 18 months after I bought my first one) and I am meticulous about keeping backups. I am a software engineer and, well, before we had github.com ... we had to protect our hard drives.
If your Time Capsule has died - or you can get into the Time Capsule through the Time Machine interface - you can still access you files. You don't need to go out and buy some fancy software to get back your lost stuff. You can't attach a usb cable to mount your Time Capsule (atleast on my 2T ones) - but you can open it to get to the hard drive
Most likely - the hard drive in your Time Capsule is still good (the thing that dies seems to be the power source). The key is to
open your Time Capsule peel back the rubber bottom and you will see some worx or hex screws
take out the hard drive (mine was a Western DigitalCaviar Green -> thanks Apple for being green!)
mount your drive to your Mac (you will prob have to get a SATA to USB adaptor (I use a Voyager Q)
from the Finder (yeah, the FINDER!) navigate into "data>ShareRoot" (this is where mine was, you might have to poke around)
double click the "sparsebundle" for your backups
In there, like little ducks, are directories for every backup - like a normal directory structure. This completely blew my mind when I found this out. It wasn't some mysterious thing like I was making it out to be. Everything was there, in increments, as I had before.
If you are not careful - you might damage your Time Capsule ... but chances are it is already dead. I keep my 2T WD in a safe place with a safe case for posterity. However that hard drive is just like any other hard drive ... it is just not in a Time Capsule.
This is a last ditch effort to get back your files. I resorted to this when I couldn't access my Time Machine backups through the GUI.

I just wanted to point out ... that when you "double click on the sparse bundle" - you are actually opeing up the "DiskImageMounter" and another "hard drive" will appear on you Desktop or in your FInder.
It is this "second" Time Machine that you will find your files in date tagged directory!

So you want to get your files out of Aperture? Simple yet scary solution.

To remove your files from Aperture try this.
Select files you want to remove.
Delete them, yes delete them.
Go directly to trash and double click. Aperture folder in trash contains all of your deleted files and you can remove them all at once.
Please try this with a few non essential files at first and never empty the trash from the finder during this operation. I did this with 24 files at the Apple Store and it worked fine but make sure it works before you commit large numbers of essential files.
I want to say that I am very excited about the possibility of fully functional Aperture as advertised. For me this program is currently miles from that point but rest assured when it gets there I wil buy it!

In reading earlier posts there were several comments from folks who wanted to back ENTIRELY out of Aperture and from the discussions I surmise that some had commited whole libraries of images before testing the product.
So what good the project export when you want to quit entirely?
Let's say you have a studio and have been cataloging your files for years in folders by job number, client, and keyword. That you have say 6TB of images easily accessed by no software other than your own internal hard drive. That Aperture comes along and wants you to change your system because Apple says so.
I tested the software before buying and it falls short in so many areas as to be unusable for me.
If and when it's fixed I will buy save two hours and it will be paid for.

TS1135 Cannot process the Photo Book; it fails always at the very last stage with "error occurred while uploading on of your files. Pls check your network connection and click Retry..." Tried at 12 times and no joy! Can anyone help?

Can anyone help with the Photo Book process? I have tried at least a dozen times and the Photo Book always fails at the very last stage of the process. I ordered Buy Book, it assembles the book and files are transferred until the very last moment... it says " An error occurred while uoloading one of your files. Please check your network connection and click Retry to resend your files." It fails every time, any advice? My server is TalkTalk which may explain everything !! ?? Help.

Boot into Safe Mode, Mac OS X: Starting up in Safe Mode, and order from there.
Also make a PDF file of your book according to this Apple Document, iPhoto '11: Preview a book, card, or calendar before you order or print it, before you order to check for errors. Keep that file to compare with the printed copy when it arrives.
