CBR v VBR for shorter projects

Hello everyone,
Just a general question really. For short projects under 60 minutes, is there any reason at all to use VBR settings, when you can set a pretty high bitrate (between say 7.0 and 7.4Mbps) using CBR. I would have thought that logically, encoding all material at a constantly high bitrate should yield better results (on short projects) than having some material encoded at a lower average under VBR settings.
Also, if the maximum bitrate advised for some DVD players is around 7.4Mbps, why does Compressor allow higher settings than this under its preset for 90 minute best quality 2 pass VBR, namely 6.2 ave with 7.7Mbps peak. I'm puzzled why the application provides an option to excede the recommended max bitrate - wouldn't this 7.7Mbps setting cause potential playback problems?
Do any of you amend this 90 minute preset to give even higher average and maximum encoding settings under 2 pass VBR for projects under 60 minutes, and if so, what sort of settings have you pushed it up to, and have you experienced any playback glitches on DVD players at those higher settings.
Most of my encodes are of sub 60 minute projects and I want to know for sure that I am doing the correct thing in encoding them at say 7.2Mbps using CBR. I assumed VBR is used on longer projects to give difficult passages more headroom, while lowering the overall average to give a smaller file size, but is there another reason for using VBR that I am not seeing?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Alan

Compressor allows for 7.7 max and a very high 6.2 average because those numbers are safe for replicated (aka factory-pressed) discs. It's the real-world issue that DVD-Rs have more playback variables (the exact dye used on the disc effects the lasers on players differently, in particular) that leads to the recommendation not to exceed 7.5 max for DVD-Rs. (In particular, higher-end players, in my experience, choke of high-bit rate DVD-R/+Rs.)
As for optimum settings, I typically use 2-pass VBR Best, 4.5 average and 7.5 max for 95% of my encodes (from as long as 100 minutes to as short as 30 seconds). MPEG-2 encoding, in an ideal world, would have the average bit rate be half the max, but a 3Mbps difference is a good real world compromise. If you're doing anything with less than a 1Mbps difference, you're better off doing a CBR encodes. When I do go CBR, it's 5.5 Mbps but even then, I always use Dolby Digital audio. (If I have to go with AIFF audio, I don't use a bit rate higher than 4.5Mbps.)

  • Can I possibly get Premiere to work for this project?

Hi. I am working on a time lapse scanner photography project. I scan flowers a few times an hour and then make videos of them drying out. I'm currently making a movie of it all. The thing is, the scans can be thousands of pixels high/wide. The problem arises when I make sequences with 20 or more of these videos (scaled down to around 10% in Premiere) moving together. It becomes almost unusable on my older Macbook Pro. Doing the more complex parts of it is also very inconvenient on a new iMac. Because I'm working with so many files, I tried out After Effects. Its proxying feature excited me, but it soon became clear that AE is meant mostly for shorter projects, and not for clips that can get 40 GB + in size. For example, in trying to make tiny proxies of clips last night, only four succeeded. It seems that the rendering is centered on your available RAM, and when it runs out (a few seconds into the first clip) rendering becomes very slow. This might work for ads or something, but not for this project. Maybe I'm not using it correctly though.
So I don't know what to do. I've tried a proxy workaround for Premiere, but that seems to involve working with clips at the resolution you made the proxy at, unlike AE where you can work with a now-more-blurry version of your main file. I tried making a tiny proxy manually, and then upscaling it in Quicktime Pro 7, but that seems to also be slow for Premiere, leading me to think that multiplying the one clip in my test sequence by 20 or more wouldn't be that different.
Does anyone have any ideas as to how do edit a project like this with a reasonably responsive UI? I don't care if I have to spend hours rendering proxies, or rendering the final copy afterwards, I just want to be able to edit without waiting for minutes when I click on a 20 layer part of the movie. I understand that this is probably an abnormal way of using Premiere, as normally one only uses a few layers at a time.
Another idea I had was to do the parts of the movie with 20+ layers in AE, and import them in Premiere to get around AE's focus on shorter lengths. But this doesn't get around the issue that its proxying feature, and rendering engine in general seems to be tailoured towards shorter projects. If you are confused, that's okay, I can elaborate more and provide pictures.
Here's some single videos from the project:

ATI cards will not work for GPU acceleration of the Mercury Playback Engine and only Nvidia cards with at least 1 GB or RAM and at least 96 CUDA cores will allow for a good experience when using the GPU enable Mercury Playback Engine.  I have a mediocre GT 240 with 1GB of RAM and it rocks. It is much better than using the software only mode. Software only mode is not bad but GPU enabled is so much better. You will have to trust me on that. A new Macbook Pro would not be wise. In fact $900.00 Dell or HP with at least 96 CUDA cores and 1 GB of RAM would be a much better option. You could in theory get a mediocre $600.00 Quad Core from Best Buy and then buy either a $70.00 Nvidia GT 240 graphics card or even a $135.00 GTX 550 graphics card to put in the system. That would work just as well.

  • CBR or VBR - What's the difference?

I would like to add 1 note to Neil's explanation of cbr vbr. I have never used vbr in authoring and I have beend doing it for a very long time. The reason is simple. When you encode mpeg video, the bitrate can fluctuate to levels above the bitrate you have set (nominal bitrate). If you download bitrateviewer and load an mpeg file into it you will see what I mean. You may have a 7k bitrate, but there may be spikes that go up to 75k. This presents 2 problems. As Neil pointed out, the buffer may run dry on a console player and create playback problems due to a bitrate that is too high. However, even earlier than that, your project may not build because it does not fit on a disk. You may get a general error or unidentified error. The reason for this is simply that a higher bitrate (caused by spikes) takes more space. My simple rule of thumb is this. When setting your bitrate, never set it so high that the mpg files would fill the finished dvd beyond 90% of it's capacity. I have an excel spreadsheet that works perfectly for estimating bitrate. If anybody wants it, simply e-mail me at [email protected]
Regarding VBR, it will allow you to set a higher bitrate for your project, resulting in higher quality. This is especially true on projects that have a lot of stills or footage that does not have a lot of movement in it. The bitrate drops when the image is simpler. However, I have not experimented with VBR because that is what my professional colleagues recomment, so why mess with what works when a new glass master at the replicator will cost you $250 and possibly a client.

The Automatic setting generally works very well indeed, and it appears that the transcode engine has been massively improved for Version 2.0 of Encore.
As an example, I am in the middle of a 4 disc set, all DVD9.
Was preparing the Client QC disc for disc 1, with almost 4 hours of video on it.
All set to Automatic, with the bitrate calculated to be 4.6Mb/sec according to Encore (Which does not seem to use the standard 4-5% overhead) and let it rip - expecting the transcode to take all day (previous tests with an external MPEG-2 encoder using VBR gave me 4 times real time to encode).
It completed writing the entire DL image in 3 1/2 hours flat.
    Video quality was superb.

  • Great acne/scar removal trick + workflow tips for short music vids + creating a "template" in FCPX

To all fine people of the FCP X community forum:
I’ve received a tremendous amount of helpful commentary on these boards.  Using FCPX for my projects has really expedited my post production process.  I thought I would show my gratitude by giving a tip I have been using the **** out of.  For any skin imperfections like scars/acne/blemishes etc., i’ve been using the CENSOR tool.  Here’s a before and after, You can see the censor filter applied to her forehead and a separate censor application  with slightly different settings to her right cheek.
I thought this might help others who are photographers who like to include videos of their shoots with models but don’t want to deal with After Effects/Motion.  Full short video available here:  http://instagram.com/p/nqdtqzTT7m/
Unfortunately I wouldn’t be making my entrance into this beloved forum if I wasn’t in search of some advice from those much wiser than I.  I am constantly making these 15 second BTS clips of my models and one of the most changed/switched out/substituted shots in almost every project I do is my first shot and the song selection.   Since I tend to use a lot of cuts even if I change the song last second it isn’t an issue to make a few adjustments between shots (helps that the duration of the video is so short) as long as the song has a fast tempo.  I don’t add my song selection to the primary storyline and connect my video clips due to the fact that usually the song may be swapped out once a model decides she’d prefer something else or if I have a change of heart.  Common sense tells me to avoid this annoyance by just working on my cuts first and waiting until the completion of my edit to add music.  So what i’ve been doing is just working on the video and while editing listen to potential tracks on iTunes or via finder.  But wanted to ask you guys:
1 - Should I stop adding my audio at the very end as a connected clip and just make add audio directly to my primary storyline and all video that I add subsequently are just “connected clips”?  What is the benefit to this in regards to speed considering how often I am changing my starting and ending clips?  I never did this because I assumed if I don’t want to use the song any more it would be too much of a hassle to add those clips to a new song (seems like i’d have to create a compound clip of everything with the old song disabled).  Any thoughts?
2 - Am I able to create a “template” for common projects?  For my BTS videos I generally always want my videos to be 23.98 fps, 1080, have 50 pixel margins on the top and bottom, generate a white background and have entire video shrink down to 58% for it to fit within the confines of apps like Instagram or Vine.  It would save a **** of a lot of time if I could just save a template for these projects…
3 - I would just about KILL to see a few music video workflow options.  I’m a Lynda.com subscriber and don’t see any workflow options, searched Larry David’s tutorials couldn’t find any and there aren’t many options on Youtube.  Ever music video editor I know who works professionally uses Adobe Premiere… I would like to be the first in my circle to use and convince everyone to switch.
Thanks again for your all of your help everyone, hope my tip helps someone!
    Anthony

Muito abrigado my friend!  Seriously thanks a million, but I was curious to know about my situation regarding replacing my first shot multiple times... In another words there's a clip already in the storyline which won't allow me to replace edit since it just moves out of the way.  Would you just go back into the browser and add the original selection to the first clip?  Because I kept having to move my connected music and solid I just gave up and would wait until the end to add the music and solid (I add the solid to give the background a different color when I want to create the letterbox effect).
I just watched a music video tutorial where someone created a 3 minute solid, made like a hundred cuts with the blade tool and manually dragged each clip from his browser to replace from start for each of those cuts in the solid...
What is your workflow for music-based edits?  Do you place the song in the primary story line and use the video as connected clips?  Do you use a solid or gap clip and dissect it with cuts and replace the segments with clips? I really hate not being able to add markers to the timeline and must make those marks on a clip/generator/music track of some kind.  Also if you have a project that has the same settings with fps, crop size, solid as a background is there a way to make template so I don't have to do that each and every time?
    Thanks again my friend!!!

  • Is an iPhone app the best choice for our project?

    Dear All,
We are developing a travel tour idea for different locations within the US.  Tour content can include video, audio, images and text, as well as maps and locations.  We want to make our tours "in-depth" so that people can spend good quality time traveling a short distance and exploring "in-depth" rather than travelling long distances and giving only casual interest to what they see.
I'm new to developing apps for the iPhone and am using Dreamweaver CS5.5 soon to be updated to CS6.
I'm wondering if an app for iPhone and other related media like Android is really the way to go because of the limited content and screen size available.  I can envision our tours being utilized in many other formats, including iPad, Interactive PDF, as travel e-books or through an interactive website.  Our goal is to sell our apps, not give our material away for free. PDF would be my preferred format, but I know that PDF is easily transferred for free among users and would probably not give us much profit.
Any thoughts out there on what the best format for our project might be, or should it include ALL of the above formats? App creation for the iPhone is a rather complicated process, so that's why I'm wondering if after all of the work that you have to put in to create an iPhone app, if that is ultimately my best choice.
I would appreciate any thoughts or advice, or any questions you might have.  I'm working on a Mac Pro with CS5.5 Master Collection soon to be updated to CS6

    hi,
It depends on your requirement. Base on my experience, VM or website all could meet your requirement. From your description, You could use azure website to host your php website (http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/documentation/articles/web-sites-php-configure/).
And you could use website auto scale feature in the future. I suggest you could see their comparison (http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/documentation/articles/choose-web-site-cloud-service-vm/
    Hope it helps.

  • What "Type" to use for Short Term TPMs?

    Hi,
I am working on Trade Promotions Management and was curious to know what promotion type is usually associated with Short Term Promotions?
    Thanks

    Hi Shub,
Please read below for the purpose of using Types for TPM.
You define types for your marketing projects. The settings you make for a type define aspects of the business logic of all marketing projects of this type.
You can define multiple types. You can create marketing projects of the types that you define.
You assign a partner determination procedure to a type. You do this to control which business partners can be assigned to a marketing project of this type. Depending on the settings in the partner determination procedure, it may not be possible to assign business partners who are not in the assigned partner determination procedure. Note that when a marketing project has the status Created, you can still assign business partners who are not in the assigned partner determination procedure, but you cannot release the marketing project. If you do not assign a partner determination procedure, you can still assign business partners when the marketing project has the status Created, but you cannot release the marketing project.
You can also create and assign objectives specifically for a type or create pairs of objectives and tactics for this type.
In most cases, you use Types for BI reporting purposes and as part of standard delivery also, it depends on the above factors on what Type you should  use for Short Term or any other TPMs.
    Award points if found helpful.

  • 320 vs 256, CBR vs VBR, 44.1Khz vs 48Khz

Can someone please tell me the difference between the above settings when converting from CD/lossless?
I know the 320/256 is the bit rate, higher = better quality, I know what CBR and VBR *stand for*, and I know that 44.1/48 is the sample rate, but I'm not sure what it actually means.
    Can someone help?
    Thank you.

Constant Bit Rate means the same bitrate is forced in all parts of the music regardless of changes in the nature of the sound. VBR means the bitrate is varied as the music complexity changes, higher for more complex music. Normally you won't see anything as simple as "320" or "256" if VBR is used because a single number just reports the average bitrate (ABR) used across all the music since the number is rarely constant. I usually go with VBR though you are to a certain extent letting the encoder decide what needs to be encoded at what rate. As another poster commented, 320 CBR (which is the maximum bitrate in mp3) is used when you want to be absolutely sure but may result in unnecessarily large files. I rarely see any ABR go above 256 and many are closer to 200.

  • Appropriate "master" format for HDV projects

If you have a typical HDV project in Premiere and you'd like to give your client a "high quality master" of the finished project, for them to recode at their leisure, what's the most appropriate output CODEC to use, where file size isn't an issue (very short projects like TVC's, or longer projects delivering on hard drive)?
    Matthew P

This will probably get moved over to the appropriate forum, since this isn't about CS5, but...
    Lagarith or Ut Video Codec
Since you're using CS3, you need the 32-bit version of either of those.
For uncompressed, your options would be Microsoft AVI with None as the codec, or QuickTime with None as the codec. Both are playable (well, they can be opened, but realtime playback may not be feasible) on either a PC or Mac.
I would not suggest Animation for live video; it's better used for (surprise) animation or any type of motion graphics that has large, even fields of color, and not the various gradations usually associated with live video.
Pixel aspect ratio and frame size will vary based on the end application, but my typical course of action is to export with square pixels at whatever dimensions are full raster for the particular format you're using--for example, 1920x1080 or 1280x720. Anamorphic aspect ratios (like HDV 1080i) are usually fine, however; it just involves the end recipient realizing that the aspect ratio needs to be properly interpreted.

  • Manual creation of Project Site for a project is taking old project site template.

    Dear All,
I have modified the project site and save it as a template to associate it with an EPT so that the modification will reflect in new project sites.
For existing projects, I am deleting the old project sites (after taking backup) and recreating so that new modifications will be there for existing projects and I am able to do so.
But, for 1 of the project, when I have deleted the project site and recreated, still it is taking the old template (i.e. new modifications has not been seen).
Kindly advice in some areas so that I can jump in and around and can find out a solution so that the project site will take modified project template.
Example to get the issue in an easy way:
    ProjectA:
    Project Site: http://epm/pwa/ProjectA
    Issue List:
Column: Category [data type as Choice: Cat1, Cat2, Cat3]
Have saved 1 project site as a template and associated with an EPT with the following changes:
Column: Category [data type as Choice: Choice1, Choice2, Choice3]
Then, deleted the project site: http://epm/pwa/ProjectA and recreated.
So, it should take the modifications in the project site.
But, it is showing as Column: Category [data type as Choice: Cat1, Cat2, Cat3].
    Regards,
    Shravan

    Dear Guillaume,
    Thanks for your response.
    Please seem my comments inline:
Which Project Server version do you use?
    PS 2010
It is working well and as expected for all projects except for 1 specific project?
Yes. It is working well for other projects except 1 project.
    Has this project something particular?
Nope. It is similar as other projects.
How do you proceed to create the new project site? Do you go to the site actions, then new site and pick up your new template?
First I have modified 1 of the project site and saved that site as a template.
Then, I have deleted the existing project site (from Project Sites under Operational Policies) and recreated so that project site will gets created from the new template. But, it's not happening.

  • I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Pro

I have Video camera movies that are HD format.. I am doing editing work on them using Final Cut Pro, but using DV PAL format for the projects I am editing. When I then tried to copy my work done in FCP Project that's originally DV PAL , into a new FCP Project that is HD, and tried reconnect media with original HD movies (video), the sequence project got distorted for all the text, shapes used and all.. everything changed its orientation and scale.. Is there a way by which I can preserve my work done on DV PAL and switch it preserving its proportions, scale and orientation, but on a HD project sequence?? Appreciate your help and advice..

Yes.  A couple of ways that might work.
    First Way
What you need to do is load one of your hd clips in the viewer and edit into a new HD sequence.  Does it display correctionly?
OK, select the clip in the hd timeline and copy (command-c).  Now go to the HD sequence with the material that's distorted.  Select all (command-a) and paste attributes (option-v) and choose basic motion and distort.  That should maek things work.  What won't work is anything that you've adjusted as far as basic motion or distort in your PAL sequence.  That I'm pretty sure you'll have to redo.
    Second Way.
Choose your original PAL sequence and do a Media Manage changing the sequence preset to the appropriate HD paramenters with the media offline.  You then should be able to reconnect these clips with your original HD media.

  • Can you use SQL as a data source for a project in the same way you can in Excel?

Excel allows you to create a data source that executes a SQL stored procedure, display that data as a table in a spreadsheet and have that data automatically refresh each time you open the spreadsheet. Is it possible to do the same thing in MS Project, displaying
the data from the stored procedure as a series of tasks?
Here's what I'm trying to do - I have a stored procedure that pulls task data meeting a specific criteria from all projects in Project Server. We're currently displaying this data as an Excel report. However, the data includes start dates and durations so
it would be nice to be able to display it as a Gantt Chart. I've played around with creating a Gantt chart in Excel and have been able to do a very basic one, but it doesn’t quite fit our needs.

No, You can not use sql as a data source for a project.
You have 3 options to achieve it:
    1. You can create a Sharepoint list with desired column ,fill desired data in that list then you can create a MS project from Sharepoint List.
    2. You can create a SSRS report in which you can display grantt chart Joe has given you that link.
    3. You can write a macro in MPP which will take data from your excel. In excel you will fetch data from your stored procedure. write a schedule which will run every day to update your data or
create an excel report in which will update automatically and write macro in mpp which will fetch the data then publish it so that it would be available to team members.
