Cdrom problem?

I have 6 ultra10 servers running solaris 5.8 108528-16. When issuing the command iostat -En, in the cdrom drive some errors appear in the hard errors field and the same number in the device not ready.
The driver is usually never used.
This is happening on all servers, some with smaller numbers, but alll show errors in the same fields.
If I test the cdrom drive is working without problems. Does it mean its going to fail?
What is the reason for getting them?
Thanks!

I would ignore this output for the CDROM because you have no CD installed in the drive. Install a CD and you should see Size: 18446744073.71GB <-1 bytes> decrease substantially. Bottom line, ignore iostat -En for the CD.

  • Kt333 Ultra 2 + Msi 52x Cdrom = Problems

im running the kt333 ultra 2 mother board, and have bought an msi starspeed 52x cdrom, problem i am having is that when it boots up, and scans the Ide's it throws out a bunch of ascii characters for the cdrom, in the bios, if i set that sec ide master to cd/dvd it wont find one, if i let it auto detect, it shows the strange ascii art.  any ideas why to msi products wont work together?

    HI sanityloss,
Can you list out your IDE devices such as :
    IDE 1 master : ......
    IDE 1 slave : ....
    IDE 2 master : ....
    IDE 2 slave : ...
    (RAID) IDE 3 , IDE 4... etc
Also, tell us how you connect the IDE cable(s). Is it 80-conductors or 40-conductors type? Blue header on the motherboard?
And also how do you set the jumpers on all the drives, Master, Slave, or Cable Select?
Your issue here might be something wrong with all these settings, such as wrong cabling, wrong jumper settings, etc.
Please give us the information so we can sort this out.

  • Dell Power Edge 6400 CDROM Problem

When installing Solaris 8 for intel in a Dell Power Edge 6400 with two processors, everything looks fine at the begginning before booting, I mean the Cd rom drive is detected as booteable, but when the system start to install, it asks from where to extract the operating system and in the list does not appear the CD Rom, it just displays the networks cards.
Please I have more than a week with this problem, I already check the HCL, I already changed the HD, the CdRom (twice), but it continues without detecting the cdrom after booting.
The Cdrom is in the scsi 5.
Any body in UK, USA, Mexico or wherever please HELP.
    Carlos Herrera

If I remember right the Dell Power Edge had an adaptec 160 controller which
you have to download and install the scsi drivers from the Adaptec website.
Check and verify which scsi controller you have on your Dell.

  • Ultra 60 cdrom problem

    Hi all,
I just bought a toshiba XM-5701B for a Sun Ultra 60, but every time I start the computer up it ejects the cd, no matter if there is cd in or not. I have two jumpers on ID2 and ID4. Is the cdrom not working or is it something about the jumpers. At OBP I so the probe-scsi commad and cdrom is there, seems ok, but it stills eject the cd. There is no way to leave it closed.
    Anybody knows ?
    Thanks.

I noticed that your drive was set up for " Target 2 "
Just for drill - try changing the SCSI jumper on the drive to ID #6.
For some reason, the vast majority of SCSI CDrom drives must be set to ID #6 on most of the Ultra series machines. I have had similiar problems in the past with U-10s and U-60s. Make sure that the "block"
jumper is properly positioned on the rear of the drive, also.
Worth a try, no ? ..........................John.

  • KT3 Ultra cdrom problem

Ive been having some problems getting my cdroms, or any cdroms for that matter to work correctly on my KT3 Ultra (MS-6380E). The bios recognizes exactly what my drives are boots, and both windows and dos recognize that they exist but 99% of the time they will not read any cd's. They have this problem no matter which IDE channel i plug them into, but my hard drives have no problems at all in either channel. I've tried changing the IDE cable, plugging in only one drive at a time, messing with the master/slave settings, resetting my bios, updating my bios, drop kicking my computer and lots of other stuff.
Im almost certain that the problem is not with my cdroms because i dont see how they would both break at the exact same time and a third cdrom i tried from another computer would have the same problem. Im also fairly certain it is not a software problem because i have reformated, repartitioned, cleaned my MBR and virus scanned 900 times. I also have the same problem even with my hard drives unplugged completely and booting off a boot disk.
I dont see anything else that could be causing the problem besides perhaps a faulty motherboard but i cant find anyone that even has the slightest clue what is wrong, or any reference to any similar problems anywhere online. Does this sound like a something a motherboard problem could be causing? Here are my system specs:
    MSI KT3 Ultra (MS-6380E)
    Athlon XP 2000+

    GeForce3 ti200 64mb
    SB Live! Value
    Netgear NIC
    40 GB samsung hdd
    60 GB seagate hdd
the cd roms currently in my computer are a RICOH 4x4x8 burner and a generic 56x. Ive asked a ton of people and have been trying to fix this problem myself for months. Any suggestions would really be appreciated. Thanks.

i got a 52x cdrom drive,i cant remember the mode,ms8???...but i know it had less buffer than another model with almost the same name...
ok...the drive reads a cd rom the first time, and then when u change the cdrom in the drive ,it still gives u the contents of the first cdrom, is there a fix for this, plz help!

You might try to press F5 (Refresh) in your Windows Explorer. This should refresh the content of the screen and show the files on the CD that is currently in the unit.

  • External CDROM problem

I've got a lot of CD's to import, so to save wear and tear on my internal drive, and to save time, I hooked up an external drive via USB.
It works except that iTunes does not pick up the track names from either the external--or internal--drive unless the external drive is disconnected.
Is there a way to make this work?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
PowerPC Macs won't boot Mac OS X from USB drives, but will boot off Firewire drives.
PowerPC Macs will boot Mac OS 9 from USB and Firewire drives.
Intel Macs will boot Mac OS X from both USB and Firewire drives.
Since the iMac G4 is a PowerPC Mac, you can't use the USB drive. You have to either replace the optical drive's case with one that includes Firewire, or buy one that has built-in Firewire from:

  • Can't install winxp on 6163VA

    i've got a pc with a ms-6163va motherboard with a p3 500 processor.
Since I wanted to install xp on it I've updated the bios to 3.5, i've tried clearing the cmos and also disabling all optimizations and apm in the bios but there's nothing to do: when I try to install windows randomly during the installation (i've saw this only when it's reading/writing from the hd or the cdrom) it hangs, it does this when it formats the partition and when it copies the files or load the files for booting the installation so it's not a cdrom problem. I've tried to use another cdrom drive but the same problem occurred. Then I decided to install xp in the hd using another computer (i've just done the 1° part of the installation and removed the hd when it asked for reboot to see if the installation continued on the pc with the 6163 motherboard) but nothing when it boots it gives me an 0x00000007b error.
    Please help meeee  ;(  ;(  ;(

eeeeck I thought it was installing   but nearly the end of the installation it crashes and when I reboot it have to restart from scratch :/

  • The installation can't find the OS CD

I have gotten to the GUI part of the install. It is now asking for me to insert the CD with the Operating Environment. I have tried all three CD's to no avail. The Installation CD and SW1 CD are bootable. But when I get to this part, the CD drive spins up and instantly stops spinning and ejects the CD telling me that this is not the correct CD. Any ideas? Thank you.

Here is a technote I wrote for my archives when I found this same problem with my SunBlade 100's. Obscurely you will find this problem doc'd with the SUN Install Release Notes under subtitle "Custom Jumpstart fails..." (yes- this has nothing to do with custom jumpstart). Hope this works...
    SUNBLADE INSTALL FROM CDROM
PROBLEM: Coming of the SUNBlade specific boot CD "Installation" for 8 10/00 or 8 1/01 all goes well until you are asked for CD #2. From here it fails stating you inserted the wrong CDROM.
RESOLUTION: The installation release notes document the problem, but not the resolution (very clear anyway- the doc states the problem is specific to Jumpstart).
    1. Reboot when it ask for CD #2 (use the webstart tools on right side for term prompt)
    2. It will run an auto start script for the first CD #1 on boot. Right click on the screen, get to a terminal and delete /etc/rc2.d/S96webstart and reboot
    3. Login into the CDE environment, get to a prompt and execute the installer #./cdrom/cdrom0/installer

  • 655 MAX-FISR SATA RAID PORT

(wonkanoby, can you use the force to help me on this one?)
    Configuration:
MSI 655 Max FISR 6730 (non HT) MoBo
    Antec True 400W
    (2)Western Digital (10,000 rpm) Raptors
    Intel P4 2.66ghz
    MSI TI4800 8XAGP
    Plextor 48/40/48 burner
    MSI 52X CDROM
    Problem:
The second SATA port is not working (ser2)
both drives have been tested and work fine.  (ser1) shows the drives seperately in the array.  (ser2) does not show either of the drives.
I have tried tons of different configurations, cleared CMOS, re-seated everything, disabled/re-enabled SATA in bios, still nothing.
???Does anyone have any ideas/tricks to get this (ser2) port working correctly so I can setup both harddrives???
    Background:
I have already had to send back (MRA-NewEgg) this board one time because of a similar problem that I did not spend a lot of time troubleshooting.  I know that a lot of people are having problems and that the SiS 655 sucks! :O  This time I decided to troubleshoot and that it might be something small I was missing.  No such luck.  I do not feel like sending this back and losing another week of use on this workstation unless absolutely necessary.  I do have this same board on a similar system with (2)SATA Seagate 7200 drives and it works great.  I am really losing my respect for MSI though as I have never had a bad motherboard from other companies, and this is 2 in a row for MSI.  I even tried this:
    http://www.msi.com.tw/program/e_service/forum/index.php?threadid=18931&boardid=10&sid=2ffcacaf0448de534331ac97aaa46912
    with no luck.
    Advice:
If I can't get this working and return, I really do not want to get another 655 board.  I have not read up yet on the (Canterwood 875P Chipset) boards from MSI.  Has there been similar issues / problems with SATA Raid as the 655 has?  Im thinking of just paying the restocking fee with NewEgg and going with an Intel Canterwood board.  Sure, the overclocking is not as good as other manufacturers, but this is a work machine so it won't be OC anyway.  I would rather go with stability.  Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

  • Problem burning cdrom...

    Hi,
I use Solaris 10 x86 on my desktop pc with ATAPI scsi cdrom. I am having problem with the software xcdroast recognizing the cdrom. I googled around and found out that I have to stop '/etc/init.d/volmgt' before using the CDRW devices. I did that but have no luck.
Even with the softtware 'grip' , it's the same problem not recognizing /dev/cdrom.
Can anyone please help me resolve this issue.
    thanks,
    siva

    Few things to try:
Put a normal cdrom in the drive and see if the cd is recognised /cdrom/cdrom0 of not check that vold is running and manually do a volcheck.
Try the bundled cdrw command cdrw -i will show you your available cd writers.
If none of these work there is a problem with Solaris recognising your hardware. I am assuning you used this drive to install the OS.

  • CDROM - fscommand to call projector problem

i apologize if this is overly simple solution for most, but I
want to be sure I'm not battling the problem with fscommand in CS3
    at the same time.
For a CDROM project, I have a simple menu projector file to
call 3 different additional projector files, all located in the
fscommand folder. The problem is that each called projector also
accesses a set of flv's located in another folder.
The call to the 3 projectors works fine, but they then can't
access their flv files/folders. I tried renaming the folders (and
calls within each swf/projector) to be local to the fscommand
folder but that didn't work either.
So placing all three called projector files in the fscommand
folder, and their corresponding flv folders there as well doesn't
    work (e.g.:
    fscommand/flv_1
    fscommand/flv_2, etc )
Hopefully this is just my own ignorance - Flash isn't my main
    job.
    I appreciate any guidance!

    2le,
Sorry for my mistake. I meant to write
    Stage object, not Scene.
The Stage object acceses the flash player in any environment
    it is running in:
    - plug-in/ActiveX control in a web browser
    - stand-alone player
    - projector (.exe file)
Try setting the following properties of the stage object:
    aMovieClip.stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.NO_SCALE;
    aMovieClip.stage.showDefaultContextMenu = false;
    aMovieClip.stage.displayState =
    StageDisplayState.FULL_SCREEN;
where aMovieClip is any movie clip in your display tree.
    Good luck,
    yr-cq
