Change a Sub-Project to be a "standalone" project

I have searched but cannot find an easy answer to this.
I am working with someone who created a Master Project and sub-projects using Project Server 2010 and then deleted the master project, the sub-projects can now only be accessed in PWA if the sub-project tick box is checked.
I know that Project uses a numeric identifier to distinguish between, master, sub-project, standalone and "Resource Pool" in a .mpp file based use of the tool. I assume that a similar numeric identifier exists in the Project Server database. Does
anyone know how to edit this value to change the status of a "sub-project" to a "standalone" project?
I saw a previous post from Marc Soester about opening the "orphaned" sub-projects and making a nominal change and then re-publishing the project, can it really be as simple as that to fix this issue?

  • Project Server 2010 - Error 20010 with a master project and 3 sub-projects during publication

    Hi,
    Here is the situation :
One master project with three sub projects.
Sub projects are really similar (Same ressources and nearly same tasks but only the first contain real work for now).
Sub projects got no sub projects nor links between projects.
The owner of the master project got read rights through projects permissions on sub projects.
Sub projects are link in "read only".
We applied Project Server 2010 SP2 last week end and the issue appeared monday.
    Here are the symptoms :
When we link only one sub project (Doesn't matter which one), the owner can publish, no problems.
With 2 sub projects, the error may occur.
With 3 sub projects, the error always occurs.
With admin rights, the error doesn't occur.
    Here is the error :
    ID : 20010 (0x4E2A)
Description : You don't have required permissions to perform the action (Average traduction)
    Detail : <detail><errinfo><general><class name="Project"><error id="20010" name="GeneralSecurityAccessDenied" uid="19515c1d-2624-466f-953a-b7fc67337b81"/></class></general></errinfo></detail>
I'm unable to determine which sub project is the culprit, if there is one, as it's working when I link only one of them.
    Thanks for your time !

    Fylim --
If the project manager in question does not need to edit any of the three projects, the PM does not need to have Read/Write access to any of the three projects.  Because you said that the PM needs to set links in all three projects, this means that
the PM will be editing all three projects.  In order to edit the three projects, the PM must have Read/Write access to all three.  Setting cross-project links constitutes editing of the projects, which is why the PM must have Read/Write permission.
    Make sense?
Regarding SP2, I am not aware that this would change anything, but I could be wrong.  The reality is that regardless of which SP you have applied to Microsoft Project and Project Server 2010, the PM in this situation MUST have Read/Write access to the
projects that he/she needs to edit with cross-project links.  Hope this helps.

  • Read only Sub Project Plans checking out in EPM

    Hi all,
Has anyone working on Project Server come accross an issue where sub project plans inserted as 'Read Only' in a master Plan, check out and therefore prevent other access?   Working on Project Server 2010 with Project 2010 SP2
    clients.
The strange thing is that its not every single plan in a master that performs in this manner.
Has anyone seen this behaviour and does anyone know any fixes?
    Thanks,
    -CL.

We've always had security on, the only thing that changed was my understanding of how we were doing security.
Before, I had written a custom UserCC that always returned the same name, after I used the standard UserCC. I had the same results both time.
The cause of my error message is "MDS repository may be configured incorrectly", which I kind of figured, but there's nothing to point me to diagnose how it is incorrectly configured or how to fix it.

  • Why does my sub-projects open in read only when master is opened

I have created a master schedule with 4 sub-projects inserted as read only.
My problem is that when the master is opened the sub-projects will only open in read only so PMs can not update their schedules when requried.
I have sold my company on using master schedules and ow it doesnt work any better.  I have not had this problem previous using MSP 2010 so can anyone help me please.

    Krys,
You are using a dynamic master and that may not be necessary nor the best choice in your situation. You say you use the master as a reporting tool and for creating links between subprojects. I have a suggestion. When you need to create cross-project links,
go ahead and create a dynamic master, make the links and then save, but don't close, each the subproject file. That will preserve the links you just make. Now close the master and when it asks if you want to save changes to all files, answer "no to all". Finally
delete the master, it is no longer needed to maintain those links and in fact, having a dynamic master creates another level in the linking structure and thus increases the chance of file corruption.
When you need to do your reporting, create a static master. Simply uncheck the "link to project" option in the lower right corner of the Insert Project window. That will create a separate file that is a snapshot in time of all the subproject files. The advantage
is that you have not created a linked structure and thus have not added to the corruption dice roll, as Rod Gill (MVP) likes to say. And yes, you will have to create a new static master each reporting period, but that is easily automated with a recorded macro,
if doing it manually is a burden.
    Hope this helps.

  • If I have a part that is repeating in 2 different projects can I have that common part only in one sub-project

I have 2 different projects in RoboHelp 11 that have a "common" part, i.e. several chapters are identical, eventually with minor changes that could be solved with flags, and I was wondering if it would be possible to have the "common" in a sub-project that I could manage for both other projects.

    Hi there
    No, not RoboSource Control.
If you click View > Pods > Resource Manager, you should see the Resource Manager pop open. From there, you are able to create a location that would be "shared" between projects or between authors.
So you create a location, then take the topics that are "common" and place them into that spot by dragging from the project to the Resource Manager window. RoboHelp should make copies there. Then in the other project, you open the Resource Manager and drag the topics from the Resource Manager window to the project. Perhaps one of the topics is named: Feeding Alligators
Once you have done this, perhaps you change some text or add an image to the "Feeding Alligators" topic. Resource Manager should then prompt you to say that the topic in your project no longer matches the topic in the Resource Manager. You should have an option to synchronize it. And at that point, the process should copy the topic from the project to the Resource Manager location. Then when you open the other project, Resource Manager would then again tell you that what is in the Resource Manager is different than what is in the project. And offer an option to synchronize it. And at that point, the content would be copied from the Resource Manager to the project.
Pretty slick when you think about it!
    Cheers... Rick

  • How should one deal with sub-projects?

    Hello to all!
Let me first clarify my title-question.
On my current project I faced software malfunction [FCPX quitting] when I reached 17 minutes of building the video on the timeline. [As a reference, allow me to call this 17-minute part of the video in making as the main project.]
Remembering from an earlier thread [? Mr. Russ being the contributor], I opted to continue the project as a separate project which I seek to call as the sub-project  Now even this sub-project is of a 14 minute duration and I have need to start a sub-project 2.
I would now like to be guided as to how to deal with these sub-projects while editing the video and after finishing the project.
Firstly, while editing. My present plan is to complete the project's video utilising as many sub-projects as needed, and then add the sub-projects to the main project. This done, I intend to add voiceover for the completed project. During this process, my questions are this...how do I add the sub-projects onto the main project? If I select and copy/paste the sub-project, it gets added as 'connected clips'...this is okay if one can export the project as such. But, when a voiceover has to be added, further retiming of the clips are called for and at this stage problems arise. Now, as I am writing this, it is striking me that I could make this added sub-project as a secondary storyline, get done with the retiming after the voiceover is added, and export the project. Have not done this before and would like guidance from senior contributors in this issue.
Secondly, when the project is exported and is being archived, do I need to have all the sub-projects or delete them to save drive-space?
    Thanks in advance.
    Have a great day.
    Dr. Somanna

Thanks Karsten for this further instructions. The present project I am working on is being done as a race against time. Faced a problem when dealing with a stack of generator clips one upon the other and each clip being given different commands regarding changes in position and rotation. Beyond the 17 minute mark, one click upon the parameter in the inspector window, and the application quit. When this quitting became a regular feature, I just remembered a thread in which one contributor wrote that he usually divides his projects into 10 minute bits before making up the whole project. Not willing to spend time further on this problem, being in a very 'creative frame mode' I simply continued working upon the project by starting up a 'sub-project'.
    Regards and take care.

  • Main Projects and Sub Projects

    Guys,
    This is my scenario.
The projects that we are going to work has got a lot of activities and needs to be brought in to Project System. Since there will be a regular changes in the project and rescheduling to be done, the person who is responsible for the whole project will not be able to do the process regularly.
We have come up with the thought of distributing the work to different departments such as PED , RND, PURCH, QLTY etc... such that, each deaprtment Project* their work with different WBS elements (hopefully using CJ11) and finally all these wbs elements being connected to the Project definition which is created by the project manager. If there are any changes made to the WBS element the dates should be automatically rescheduled, which is available in SAP PS.
This can be a sub project kind of an idea. Minor projects under One main Major Project.
Or for eg.. Multiple projects of a department under the Departments' Project definition.
So guys, let me know if this concept could be done in PS.
Any kind of help will be really appretiated.
Pls reply if you have any doubts in the scenario.
    Thx.
    Sbks.

    Nitin,
Hope that you understood my scenario, and as I could do it partially with your reply.
To be more clear from my side. Our plan crosses department wise rather that the projet plan flow. You can find the eg below.
    1. The Project manager would create the project definition and would communicate this to all the dept heads and wait for them to create the WBS elements.
    2. The dept heads would Project* their plan in to the system individually, entering the duration for each activity. This process is done by the cross functioning departments working on the same project.
    3. The dept plan would later be linked to the Project definition by the project manager himself, and as the duration is already given scheduling would be carried out subsequently by the project manager.
    Current Plan.
    Design
    Complete drawing - RND
    Flow analysis - Design Dept
Design Approval process - PED and MKTG
    Machines
    Identify Supplier - PED
Get plan from machine manufacturer - PED
    Getting quotation - PED
    Negotiate & finalise - PURCH
Raise a Procurement Requisition - PURCH
    Manufacturing - SUPPLIER
    Receipt - PED
    Installation & commissioning - PED & QLTY
    Tools
    Identify tool - PED
    Prepare tool list - PED
Decide make / supplier - PED
Get quotation for standard tool - PURCH
Raise a Procurement Requisition - PURCH
Receipt and Calibration - PED & QLTY
    The Plan goes on....
As you can see the activities that are given above involves inter-dept employees.
This is the plan what we have in mind..
    Plan from Marketing
    Plan from Design
    Plan from AEG
    Plan from RND
    Plan from Purchase
    Plan from Quality.
Instead of following the Activity Flow we were thinking of a Department wise flow.
Could this be done in Project system.
    Pls Help.
    Regrds

  • Is there a way I can use a Master with sub-projects on different calendars?

Wondering if I can get some advice creating a Master Project (MSP2013 Standard, no Project Server software). I have 3 projects of which 2 are utilising a Standard calendar 8:00AM to 5:00PM 8hr day 40hr week, and 1 project (the largest) utilising a Customised
    calendar 7:30AM to 3:30PM  7.5hr day 37.5hr week.
The dominant project is running on the Customised calendar so I have set the Global Options in the Master to reflect the 7:30AM to 3:30PM  7.5hr day 37.5hr week. Then set the calendar in Master Project Information default to the Customised calendar.
Finally, the resource pool for all 3 projects is in the Master.
No problem when I insert the sub-project into the Master which is using the customised calendar. All data is reflective of the original project.  However, when I insert either of the 2 sub-projects using the 40hr week calendar the Summary Headings for
the inserted projects are incorrect.  For example, instead of being 2 weeks duration, the summary heading displays 2.13 weeks, and instead of 4 weeks duration, the summary heading displays 4.27 weeks.
The Global settings appear to be interfering with the projects on the Standard calendars.  I am surprised and extremely frustrated as I thought the settings in the Master would not affect anything?
Sorry guys, have posted this in 3 different places as it is so important to me!

Hi Guys, many thanks for your responses, really appreciate your time, however I am finding this much more complex. I have put my original sheets to one side and started again. Once again this is very important hence a lot of detail here. I am hoping something
will provide a clue where I am going wrong.
New sheet |save as Master | Change Working Times |copy Standard Calendar and called it 37.5 Hour
    Calendar| No exceptions | Work Weeks tab |Details | Set Monday to Friday 7:30AM to 12:30PM then 1:00PM to 3:30PM. Selected Options | Schedule | Start 7:30AM End 3:30PM |Hours 7.5 | Hours per week 37.5 |Auto Scheduled |Duration Hours|
Work Hours |Fixed Duration | OK OK. Project | Project Information | Calendar changed to 37.5 Hour Calendar | Save.
In my previous example I noted that my main project is scheduled 37.5 hours but I will skip inserting it here, the issue is subprojects with different settings to the Global, that is mixing projects with different calendars in a Master.
    New sheet | save as 40 Hour Project |Change Working Times |Standard Calendar | No exceptions | Selected Options | Schedule | Start 8:00AM End 5:00PM |Hours 8 Hours per week 40 |Auto Scheduled |Duration Weeks | Work Hours |Fixed Duration
    | OK OK | Save.
    Entered 5 new Tasks, all 2weeks duration, all linked Finish to Start. Inserted a Summary Heading named 40 Hour Summary | 40 Hour Summary Duration = 10 wks | Start 9 June 1014 8:00 AM | Finish 15 August 2014 5:00 PM |Created 1 Resource called Fred | 100%
    |$100 Standard Rate | Assigned Fred to all tasks 100% | Project | Project Information | Statistics | 10w 400h $40.000 |Save and Close | All correct.
Back to the Master | Project | Insert Subproject | selected 40 Hour Project |Duration 400 hrs | Start 9 June 2014 8:00AM | Finish 21 August 2014 10:30AM. It appears the Global settings are affecting the inserted subproject note the finish time is now
    10:30AM. Project | Project Information |Statistics |Duration 400h | Work 400h | All correct!
BUT | select View Outline Show Subtasks |This is where further changes have happened | Project | Project Information |Statistics |Duration is now
    374.5h | Work 400h.
Besides information being displayed incorrectly these figures will affect all Reports. This example suggests you cannot have subprojects in a Master that are associated with different calendars? Surely not! Please help if you can, I have
spent hours searching for answers, and I can’t believe I am the only one who has come across this! Many thanks.......

  • Sub-projects keep disappearing

I have a master project set up with five sub-projects but just recently whenever I open the master project, the sub-projects are not there, the whole task sheet is just blank. Sometimes doing a combination of 'Show outline level 1' and then 'Show all subtasks'
will make them re-appear, sometimes it will make just one or two of them re-appear, sometimes this will not work at all.
When I go to close the master project, however, it asks me if I would like to save the changes to each of my sub-projects in turn, so it obviously thinks they are still attached. Why doesn't it show them? Is five too many sub-projects for the software to
    handle?

This problem sounds like a problem that another user reported yesterday.  You never told us what version of Microsoft Project you are using.  It would help if we know.  If you are using Microsoft Project 2010, you need to apply Service Pack
2 to your software, as this resolves the missing tasks bug.  Let us know and we will try to help.

  • LSMW: How to move sub-projects among projects

    Dear all,
As stated in the subject, Im looking for a trx or whatever that let me move a whole sub-project from projet X to project Y.
I have been searching on my own, but so far so bad, no luck.
Any help will be really appreciated and rewarded,
    Thanks!
    Fede

Hello Khairul and thanks for you and all that replied on this thread,
I had already tried what you say, but the field Project appearead grey so I couldnt copy among projects.
I have been researchinga in SAP notes and found this one, which fixed my problem:
    #799883
    Reason and Prerequisites
Up to now it was not possible to copy subprojects completely into other projects. The LSMW objects always had to be copied separately.
    Solution
Importing the specified Support Packages allows you to also select a project other than your own when you copy subprojects.
Since screens are also affected by changes, this modification can only be imported through a Support Package.
    Thanks again for your help,
    Fede

    Thank you.
Obrigado por contactar o fórum Microsoft Technet!

    Hi Hezequias,
You can get the ProjectModifiedDate column in MSP_EPMProject_userView in the Reporting DB where you can
get the data based on the projectUID.
The "last saved" date in the draft DB (be aware that querying in the draft DB is not supported by MS).
For the "last modified by", I think it is not stored in any place.
But you can develop custom code upon publishing the project (Event BeforePublish), writing the current
date and username automatically into a custom enterprise field.

  • Merged projects - topic-level tag problems in sub-projects

I am working on an extensive help file in RoboHelp HTML. It
consists of a master project and 15 sub-projects. Each of the sub
projects have topic-level conditional tagging, and when each
sub-project is compiled, the topic-level tagging works and the CHM
is correct in regards to what topics are included and excluded.
However, when I compile the master project, it seems that RoboHelp
disregards ALL topic-level tagging in the sub-projects. So, the CHM
for configuration A includes all sub-project topics for
configurations A, B, C, and D. The topics are in the TOC and they
appear as search results. We are not using an index, but binary
index is checked in the project settings.
The same four configurations in the sub-projects are also in
the master project, but the conditional tag expressions aren't
    word-for-word identical. Should they be?
Note that the content-level tagging within the sub-projects
DOES work when the master project is compiled. For some reason, the
problem is isolated to the topic-level tagging.

    I think I'm the one causing the problem - I don't think I
read your initial post carefully enough. Sorry...
I can't figure out how this is happening. When you merge
.chms, you have already compiled the 'slave' projects. The link
from the master TOC points to a slave .chm - which you say is
working correctly when opened on its own.
Since the slaves and masters are compiled independently,
there shouldn't be any interaction between the master and slave
build expressions - and if there is one, it should be excluding
more topics, not including more topics!
The typical problems people have with merged .chms seem to be
TOC issues (does the master TOC show up, or just the slave
project's TOC?) and path issues (the master can't find the slaves).
However, I did see one or two posts on this forum where the master
was pointing to old copies of the slave .chm - could you have a
    "complete" .chm lurking about?
BTW, according to RH help, binary indexes are fine in merged
HTMLhelp. Binary TOCs are not. I don't think you have this problem,
because the symptoms are different, but you could take a look - the
setting is in the HTMLHelp Generate wizard. Click the [Advanced]
button on the first wizard page and look on the TOC tab to make
sure Binary TOC is not checked.
You might also do a quick search on the General
Info/HTMLHelp/RH for HTML forums for "merged .chm" - you might
recognize a symptom in someone's post that I didn't catch.
    Good luck,
    Elisa

  • VBA - Setting Custom Fields For Sub-Projects Using a Master File

    Hello,
I was wondering if anyone had any experience or could provide some help with a Macro to set the Custom Fields in Sub-Project Files directly from the Macro. I had this macro working in the past with Project 2007, but it has been a couple years and I am struggling
to resolve an error. I am currently running Project 2010 with SP2. I intend to use this Macro in our Server 2010 environment, however at this time, I'm testing locally on my desktop.
    Scenario.
I have a Master File with 2 sub-project (Project A, and Project B) inserted. While working in the Master File, I create a custom field title "TEAM Lookup". While in the Master File and without having to individually go and open, edit, save, and
close each sub-project, push the custom field down to the project files.
ERROR: Currently, the Macro will run and I can step through the lines of code until line 12 where I'm asking Project to use the organizer to shift the newly created custom field from the Master File to a sub-project. The line appears to
populate correctly, but instead of continuing through the loop, an error is caught (ID - 1101 - "The File (Master File) was not found")
Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
    Sample Code
    1. Sub CopyCustomFieldToSubprojects()
    2. Dim MASTER, custfield, contin, AllDone
    3. Dim SubProj As Subproject
    4. Alerts False
    5. MASTER = ActiveProject.Name
    6. Application.EnableCancelKey = pjInterrupt
    7. custfield = CustomFieldGetName(ActiveCell.FieldID) & ActiveCell.FieldName
    8. On Error GoTo errhand
    9. contin = MsgBox("This macro will copy the field " & "(" & custfield & ")" & " (the currently selected field) to all subprojects in this consolidated schedule." & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & "Be
patient, it may take more than 70 seconds to run. You will be notified when it's done. Continue?", vbOKCancel)
    10.    If contin = vbCancel Then GoTo done
    11.    For Each SubProj In ActiveProject.Subprojects
    12.    OrganizerMoveItem Type:=pjFields, FileName:=MASTER, ToFileName:=SubProj.SourceProject.Name, Name:=custfield
    13.    Next SubProj
    14.     AllDone = MsgBox("The " & custfield & " field has been copied to all subprojects.", vbOKOnly)
    15. GoTo done
    16. errhand:
    17. ret = err.Description
    18. ret1 = err.Number
    19. done:
    20. End Sub

    SGBlaine,
Project VBA can get rather fussy about some things so you just have to find out what it wants and then adjust your code accordingly. The following will work:
Note the tweaks to the custfield variable and to the MASTER and source project names. Also when working with strings in VBA it is a good idea to eliminate at least one little gotcha, the need for exact capitalization. Therefore I always add the Option Compare
Text statement. In your macro it won't make any difference since you do not directly create a string value, but it's good practice to have the option.
    Option Compare Text
    Sub CopyCustomFieldToSubprojects()
    Dim MASTER, custfield, contin, AllDone
    Dim SubProj As Subproject
    Alerts False
MASTER = ActiveProject.FullName 'FullName includes the path, now it can find it
    Application.EnableCancelKey = pjInterrupt
    custfield = CustomFieldGetName(ActiveCell.FieldID) & " (" & ActiveCell.FieldName & ")"
'strings are very fussy, it has to be exact
    On Error GoTo errhand
contin = MsgBox("This macro will copy the field " & "(" & custfield & ")" & " (the currently selected field) to all subprojects in this consolidated schedule." & vbCrLf & vbCrLf & "Be
patient, it may take more than 70 seconds to run. You will be notified when it's done. Continue?", vbOKCancel)
If contin = vbCancel Then GoTo done
    For Each SubProj In ActiveProject.Subprojects
        OrganizerMoveItem Type:=pjFields, FileName:=MASTER, ToFileName:=SubProj.SourceProject.FullName, Name:=custfield

  • Budget check for PM orders with main and sub-projects

    Hello
We have a scenario wherein we have created a main project and a sub-project. We have linked the sub-project to main project. We have also assigned budget to the main project. We have created a PM order wherein we are trying to enter the costs by entering the hours of work. We have configured the budget profile and set the tolerance limites and assigned to main project. The requirement here is we need to have have costs check againt the budget that been available in the main project. But the system is checking the budget of the sub-project. Please share if any specific setting is required to check the budget of main project instea sub-project.
    Regards,

I also double checked, you are right there is no forum for PM, I dont think I could suggest much since there isnt a dedicated forum, but you can try posting this query in the ABAP forum probably some abap'r who has worked with PM module should have a look. Also if possible try to connect with one of the moderators out here and ask for assistance in starting something for PM

  • Adjust changes in Implementation Project  back to Template Project

    Hello All,
Please can you help with transaction SA_PROJECT_UPGRADE, the case is as follow:
    STEP 1
    - Template project is created including process structure and documents, template is activated
    - Implementation project: is created derived from template project.
    - In Template project: Change in pocess node made: added an new process node
    - Run SA_PROJECT_UPGRADE with checked box "New Version of Original" and chosen project: Implementation project
    - Implementation project:  the yellow boxes appears on the appropriate place and button "adjust to original" is used.
    So far, so good
    STEP 2
    - Implementation project: a new process node is added, project is saved
    - Run SA_PROJECT_UPGRADE with checked box "'Current Version in Project" and chosen project: Implementation project
    - Template project: no changes are visible in SOLAR01 or SOLAR02
    - In SOLAR01: settings -> User specific -> box checked "Dislay changes made in project"
    So far, NOT good.
    Resume:
    - using transaction SA_PROJECT_UPGRADE from Template -> Implementation Project works according documentation
    - using transaction SA_PROJECT_UPGRADE from Implementation Project -> Templates does not work according documentation
    Does anybody recognise this?
    Or do I oversee something?
System: SSM 4.0 updated to SP13
    Thanks in advance
    Rutger Koppelaar

Hi Rutger (& all others watching this thread),
I would like to make certain corrections to one of the points posted by me:
    2) Within a Template Project, any actual changes to the document does not offer itself as a 'change' while doing comparison on Implementation Project. In other words, after a given Scenario and all its associated documentation are copied into an Implementation project, if a given document at a given node needs to be edited, it's better to create a new document and upload it in Template Project than to open & change the same document. If the same document is edited, the Compare and Adjust cannot see that as 'difference'.
On the above point, I have now see better/different results with my recent work; not sure if this is version/ support package specific.
    Environment:
    SolMan 4.0
    SAP_BASIS - Release 700 Level 0013
    SAP_ABA - Release 700 Level 0013
    ST - Release 400 Level 0014
Assumption: Both the Template and Implementation Projects are in the same SolMan instance and not a case where the Template is being transported into another instance!
Findings (please bear with this verbose description; one day I intend creating a Blog instead, to list all these points):
    (1) In General Documentation Tab of Template Project, any changes made is instantly visible in General Documentation Tab of the Implementation project - not even dependent on running SA_PROJECT_UPGRADE transaction
If you indeed run this transaction - in foreground or background, and later check the Implementation Project, it would not highlight that node as having undergone any change. However, if you double click the document itself, you'd be pleasantly surprosed that it opens the most updated version you maintained in the Template Project. No need for 'Compare and Adjust'.
    (2) In Test Cases Tab - any change you make to Test Document in Template Project is again instantly available for the Implementation Project that had inherited the document, provided no manual changes were done to that document in the Implementaiton Project directly. Again, no need to run SA_PROJECT_UPGRADE transaction or the subsequent 'Compare and Adjust' function
2a) If, however, the Test Document was altered in Implementation Project subsequently, the chain gets broken (in my understanding so far), and any subsequent changes made in Template Project does not become 'instantly' visible in Implementation Project - the two behave as though they are different documents
In such a case, if you desire to 'restore' the supremacy of Template Project's contents, run SA_PROJECT_UPGRADE transaction, and after the background job finishes, visit Implementation Project concerned. The node where the Documents differ is not highlighted (unfortunately).  However, if you are aware of that node, and hit  'Compare and Adjust' button the ensuing Window does tell you with a # sign on the right hand panel that the Document has indeed changed in the original. You can 'adjust' that and save.
Once this is done, and also you vow to not change the document in Implementation Project directly, the link between the two is kind of re-established. Any subsequent alterations you make in the Test Case at Template Project would be instantly visible from Implementation Project, as before !
I have tried to explain precisely what I experiemented and found. I hope this works consistently
The ways in which Document linkages are established and pointers to KW object IDs work is rather inscrutable for me, without ABAP support.
I'll update any further findings here.
    Please keep a watch.
    Thanks and regards,
    Srini
