Charge for HP Recovery discs

As soon as I got this computer (as a gift this past Christmas), I tried ordering a set of recovery discs. Because it was a brand new machine, the price was shown as 0.00. In the last stage of the ordering process, the price had jumped to 30.00. I cancelled my request.
I was under the impression that the mfger would you send you a set of discs upon request with the purchase of a new computer. I also thought there was a period of time in which the discs were free and a charge applied after that time expired.
I created a set of my own recovery discs but now cannot locate them and I need to rebuild my four month old computer. Could you clarify for me what the process is for obtaining a set of discs from HP on a new machine?
Thank you for your help!
Lauren

Hi, mahemac ~ I apologize for taking so long to get back to you and also for not expressing myself clearly, as is apparent from your reply.
I know I can try to restore the machine to factory condition via the recovery partition, but I'd like to have an official set of discs on hand, just in case I run into any problems. You also allude to that in your reply when you say "If the recovery does not works using partation, then you can order the recovery disk..."  I would rather have the discs in hand before I try the recovery partition, rather than having to sit idle until they arrive. At least now I can use the machine, even though it has issues severe enough that I want to rebuild it.
Also, HP apparently still sends out recovery discs, as there is a link to order them from the downloads page for my specific machine. My main question here was that discs should be offered free upon request with a new machine. I made the request and the screen showed they were free, but in the final stage of the process, it shifted to 30.00. I was wondering why.
In addition, I know there was a problem in the past with some official HP recovery discs not working (and the customers were correct in what they stated) because there was a patch downloadable on the Drivers/Downloads page for my other HP computer to work around that. I was under the impression that was an issue for only some machines, though. I'd be surprised if it was still an issue with the newer models.
I'll be calling in today to find out what I can about ordering the recovery discs. I'll report back here with my findings, in case it's helpful for anyone else.

This computer is not supported by the System Revory Discs.
You will not be able to continue to recover this system with these discs.
    Error: 0100-3658-3656-3657
    ..and there you have it.
I am an I.T. Director; don't waste my time with useless quetsions.
This is an HP DV6; I filled out the request form after entering my serial number on the HP site to get the discs.
The original hard drive died; I have a new one in there that is formatted and ready to go.
And then I got the error message; I used another hard drive; formatted as well.
I know Win7 works becuase, before I was going to give you 20 bucks, I wanted to make sure
that this laptop will run Win7 from another hard drive (doubly confirming that the original hard drive was bad)
and it ran Win7 Enterprise out of a work laptop that I have access to.
It ran like a charm. So, then I order the Discs from HP to match the COA on the laptop Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit and i get the error message mentioned above.
So, how do I get the discs to install Win7?

This is a consumer to consumer forum.
No one from HP will respond to you on behalf of HP.
No one here will be able to give you a "this is the way to fix the problem" answer.
There are hundreds of threads like yours which speak of the same problem.
All we can do is make recommendations.
    Here are mine:
    1. See if making the bootable cyberlink patch and running it before running the recovery disks, works.
    http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=pv-80183-1&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en
    2. If suggestion one above fails to work, the only other way I know of getting W7 to install is to make your own plain W7 installation media and use the product key on the notebook to activate the installation.
    Here's how to do that:
If you can read the 25 character Microsoft windows 7 product key, you can download plain Windows 7 ISO files to burn to a DVD for the version of windows that came installed on your PC, and that is listed on the Microsoft COA sticker on your PC's case.
Burn the ISO using the Burn ISO option on your DVD burning program and burn at the slowest possible speed your program will allow. This will create a bootable DVD.
Or use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link  below. You need a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
    http://download.cnet.com/Windows-7-USB-DVD-Download-Tool/3000-18513_4-10972600.html
Use the 25 character product key on the PC to activate the installation.
The key will activate either a 32 or 64 bit installation.
Then go to the PC's support and driver page to install the drivers you need.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below.

I have a Verbatim 2TB external USB 3.0 drive plugged into the PC.  It's used for both my weekly image backups as well as my nightly data backups.  I have one of these on EACH machine in my environment, for backups local to that machine.  I also use them on machines I build for friends and family, as everybody needs a backup system for "priceless data".
Actually, to be a bit more complete, my "data" backups consists of two parts: (1) 1st-of-the-month FULL backups of all my data, and (2) nightly INCREMENTAL backups which handles anything created/changed in the past 24 hours.  Thus a "backup set" consists of the beginning FULL backup coupled with the ever-growing throughout-the-month set of nightly INCREMENTAL backups.
NovaBACKUP can handle all of this if you need to recover something, so you yourself don't need to know exactly which backup file your file is located on.  You simply identify the folder/file(s) you wish to recover, and the AS-OF date you want for that file (with "as of the latest version available" being the default).  If you want to recover an older version than the most current version, you simply slide a GUI time-slider backwards until you arrive at the as-of date you desire.  NovaBACKUP then figures out where the most current version is AS OF THE DESIRED DATE, and accesses that one-or-more backup files in order to complete your task.
I retain multiple "backup sets" (going back 4 complete months), so I can recover any folder/file(s) I had available on any specific night during the past 4 months.  Most commonly of course it's typically "get me the most current version available as of last night", but just in case that version is corrupt or I truly want an earlier version, I can get it easily.

  • Hard drive failure - options for data recovery and AppleCare coverage

I have been handed a relative's 12 month old MacBook Pro with a factory-installed 500GB hard drive which appears to have failed. When attempting to boot the MacBook I am met with the classic clicking and grating noise which I know is a tell-tale sign of hard drive failure. The drive will not boot and I am shown the question mark folder icon, indicating that the operating system cannot be found. Have booted into internet recovery mode, Disk Utility appears to have found no sign of the hard drive's existence and shows none of its partitions. I have attempted putting the MacBook into FW target-mode and mounting the disk from another laptop, but to no avail; while it will go into target mode the drive simply isn't visible. The SATA connection to the drive is definitely OK - I have tested with another 2.5 inch hard drive which showed up fine in Disk Utility and was bootable. Have run Apple Hardware Test/Diagnostics but this returned no errors. It seems like a pretty clear cut case of drive failure.
I put this all to the relative whose laptop this is and asked them whether the MacBook had been dropped recently, explaining to them that this is one of the likeliest causes for such sudden failure. Sheepishly they admitted that they had indeed dropped it, although not from too great a distance and onto a carpeted floor. Apparently in the days immediately after the shock the hard drive continued to boot but the system was very slow and beset by spinning beech ball hangups. It is only in the last few days that the hard drive has become completely unbootable, and seemingly unreachable.
I have two questions that I would be grateful for some help with.
Firstly, is there any possibility of recovering data from this drive without going to a data recovery specialist? The user did have backups of most important data, but some recently imported photos were not backed up. Is it any use me trying any third-party data recovery software utilities, bearing in mind that I can't even mount the drive in target mode?
Second, the MacBook is still covered by the extended AppleCare warranty for the next two years. Is it worth my relative's while making a Genius Bar appointment to see whether Apple would replace this drive for free, given that the damage was most likely user-inflicted? Is there any chance that this sudden failure could be unrelated to the drop the MacBook suffered the other day - perhaps just a result of the 'normal' failure rate? I am more than happy to exchange the drive for a new one myself and my relative is happy to pay for the new part (I was amazed at how cheap hard drives are now), but would we be better off trying an Apple Store? My prediction would be that while we might get lucky and have an obliging genius who agrees to swap the drive without asking too many questions, we could also have one who concludes the damage is not covered by the warranty and insists on charging for the new hard drive (at a mark-up I assume) and labour.
Any thoughts about these two issues or the hard drive failure more generally are very welcome. Thanks.

1, Data recovery software is your only alternative if there is no backup. It may or may not be able to revoker anything from that hard drive. If it does then the only other choice is to go to a data recovery service. If have to go that route expect to pay for it, like $$$$.
2, Yes. They will at least tell him what the problem is and the cost if any to fix. There is a good chance they will fix it for nothing and only charge for data recovery if they can do it.

I was hoping we could find a download for the Recovery Disc Creator program. Either it or the recovery partition is probably corrupt.

  • G570 RECOVERY DISC ?

When I tried to create backup recovery, it actually errased everything instead of copy. There's nothing on the discs. So I had to recover it to factory settings. So I lost not only all my stuff, but also all programs that came with it when I purchased it. My spreadsheets that I backed up on usb cards are useless because the program doesn't exist anymore. What is the reasoning for not including backup disc with laptop. For an unexperienced computer savy person like me, I didn't know I needed to create a disc when I first purchased it. Does Lenovo have recovery disc that can be purchased?

    hi PAMS,
If you used the One Key Recovery 7.0 to create a recovery media, it should not wipe your PC to factory settings - see this article. Perhaps you used a different application to create a backup?
Moving forward, if your spreadsheet documents are of the file extensions .xls, .sdc., then you may use a trial copy of MS Office or a full version of OpenOffice (free) to read those files.
For the backup disc, most OEM companies don't supply a recovery disc or an OS disc anymore (unlike 6-8yrs ago - probably to reduce cost) as the computers now adays have a hidden recovery partition built-in to the HDD to restore the unit to a working condition in event of a crash. If the HDD fails, that's where the creation of recovery disc kicks in (which normally pops-up with a notification on the system tray to tell you to create your recovery disc). If you missed it, you will need to contact the OEM, in this case Lenovo, for the recovery disc (fees may apply). Support phone list here.
    Hope this helps

I haven't charged before the download, the app store first let me to download it then it requested that amount of money for next download wich it was a free app. Can anybody enlight me? thanks

If you have problems with your Mac you use Lion Recovery
However, you can create your own installation disc >  How to create an OS X Lion installation disc | MacFixIt - CNET Reviews
Since Lion came pre installed on your Mac, the App Store doesn't not recognize that as a purchase so you if you want to re download Lion to create a boot disk you will have to pay for it. You can then re download Lion on all your authorized Macs for free.

An error occurred in the recording phase. Please check if the disc is scratched or dirty.

I have tried to do a recovery disc since buying the Computer in June 2009. The message always comes up at the same spot in the process. I am using DVD-R discs.

Can you burn to those disks using the regular Disk Writer Program?  It doesn't matter what type as long as it's to that same batch of disks.
I would contact Toshiba as per this post and request that they provide you with a set of Recovery Disks since you can't make your own.  They shouldn't charge you for them under the circumstances, but you might have to be forcefull about it.

    Hi,
I am hoping someone can help me here, or maybe tell me how to do this myself? I have a Satellite A135-2266 that needs to have the HD replaced. This computer, if I can get the recovery discs, will be donated to an orphanage in Kenya that our church supports.  I will replace the HD myself, but I need the recovery discs (this was my son's laptop - he's in the navy and it died on him after only 6 mos, but he was not able to get it to land in time for warranty - and now he cannot locate the recovery disc.  This is my plea for help. If anyone has recovery discs for this model, is there any chance they could copy them for me - I'd pay for the discs and shipping, so that I can fix it and get it to the orphanage?  HELP? if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm all ears.  I will be calling Toshiba to see if they can help me out, but I have faith in the users here to maybe be my salvation.

  • Creating Win 7 64bit Recovery Disc for Satellite L500-19x?

    My new Satellite L500 - 19X came pre-installed with Win 7 - 64 bit version.
Also included was a "Product Recovery Win 7 32 bit" disc
Within the packaging was a leaflet saying:
"If you plan to use the 64-bit version at a later stage, please create a _recovery medium_ prior to installing 32-bit Windows 7"
It then cautions me to create a "64 bit recovery medium.....ordering a 64-bit recovery medium is not free of charge"
The manual goes on at length about "_System Recovery Options_" As instructed in the manual I have made a "Repair Disc Windows 7 64-bit" Am I correct in saying that I do not or cannot have an actual Win 7 64-bit disc?
The leaflet says "a backup copy (of the Win 7 64-bit) is stored on the hard disk drive as a _recovery image_" So is this the actual Win 7-64-bit complete disc that I am after, and if so how do I get it?
The Toshiba documentation is not clear, and I believe rather contradicts itself?
I am confused! Anyone understand what's going on?
    JohnF.

My confusion is because I don't understand what "recovery disc" means?!
On the "Dear Customer" flyer entitled "+Choosing your Windows 7 Architecture+" that came with the machine it states:-
"+A backup copy of the system (64 bit version) is stored on the hard disk drive as a recovery image+" This is what I don't understand, as I have already made a "+repair disc Win 7 64-bi+t" as well as having the "+Product recovery Win 7 - 32-bit" cd+" This cd seems to be the complete Windows disc, unless I am mistaken.
I guess what I am getting at is do I have complete Win 7 - 64-bit in case of total failure of the machine ? (I am asking the question because you often used to get a full Windows disc with a new computer in the old days)
Does this make it any clearer? Thanks for everyone's help
