Chromium causes overheating / fan to spin at 100% / X to crash

Hey all,
I have a Toshiba Portege R835 laptop and have been running Arch Linux on it for the past year.
Lately when running Chromium (happened within the latest few versions), the laptop heats up badly.  I've tried measuring CPU and GPU usage, toggling different GPU acceleration features within Chromium, and testing on different types of web pages.  Occasionally X will freeze completely, and I'm unable to even switch to a tty via CTRL+ALT+<num>, forcing me to do a cold reboot - when this occurs the fan will begin to spin at 100% and no obvious errors (Xorg.log, dmesg.log) are available after reboot.
This mainly occurs when browsing JavaScript-intensive pages (facebook, gmail) or viewing HTML5 videos.  Firefox doesn't have this issue when viewing the same pages.
powertop/top/intel_gpu_top don't seem to suggest any irregularities in CPU (15% or less average across the cores, which isn't abnormal) or GPU usage; the only real difference that I notice is that wakeups when Chromium is open are increased (average is usually between 400-800 idle, whereas with a browser like Firefox and the same tabs open it is around 200-500 idle).
Additional information:
Plugins are only run on a "click to play" basis, so I doubt that flashplugin could be a cause.
I don't have this issue with other webkit-based browsers (midori).
DE is GNOME 3, but it's occured with xmonad before as well.
xf86-video-intel graphics driver, occurs with and without SNA enabled.
Stock up-to-date kernel, i915 parameters are all their default values, with and without KMS enabled during bootstrap
Thanks for any assistance!

It's my understanding from the nVidia forums that this is normal behavior for each of these models.  Not sure about your model, though.
It's really annoying because when i am done using my computer for the night, I quit X and logout. But I cannot sleep with this fan going 100%. I guess i will have to leave X running all the time.
Yup, I understand completely.  When I first got the 9600GT, that was the first thing that I didn't like about it.  Then the same happened with the 250GTS. Yes, it really is annoying.
It seems like I remember reading somewhere that a video bios/firmware uprade might stop that behavior, but not sure.  It might be worth checking out, though.

  • Help MSI GE60 Fan keeps spinning to 100% and down every 10 seconds.

    Hello,
I just bought an MSI GE60 and after 4 days of using, The fan keeps spinning up and down every 10 seconds even when nothing is running on the laptop. Have tried updating the BIOS and the drivers, but no change.
Every time i turn on my laptop this always happen. It goes on when my laptop is on. Even if im not doing anything it still keeps spinning up and down. I checked the temperature and its at 40+ C and my CPU usage is normal. Basically im not doing anything and it keeps doing this fan spin up and down.
Even when the cooler boost is on or off, its still does the same thing, the fan keeps spinning up to 100% and down.
Do you think this is a software issue or hardware?  It is very annoying to hear the fan go 100% for 10 seconds then back to normal then back to 100% speed again and when i press cooler boost it doesnt do anything. So even tho the cooler boost button is off, it still keeps doing the 100% fan speed and back to normal again. It keeps repeating.
Can anyone help me solve this problem please? Thank you very much.

I have already tried uninstalling the S-bar and SCM drivers but still getting the fan noise. Also tried the no-battery and no-power reset for more than 24 hours but still having the same problems. The only thing that worked was changing the values in the RWeverything software. The only problem here is that it will work only until I shutdown the laptop. Once I do a cold boot I have to redo the RWeverything changes again.
    @reprieve.nagrand
thanks for your case. Can I ask you a few questions more, please?
    1. According to your model id your notebook came with just FreeDos, right? Could you please enter the Bios and go to System Information to confirm that you are using Bios 10F and EC version 14.04 (or 4.04)?
    2. I urgently need a screenshot of your EC-Page within RWeverything after a cold boot without any modifications. Please try to make the screenshot at that time, when you can barely hear the fan anymore during the spin-on / spin-off cycle.
    3. CoolerBoost: with a laptop that has been sitting idle for at least 20mins since last cold boot (no load, please!), can you turn on coolerboost by pushing the button somewhere to the left of the Powerbutton and let coolerboost run for at least 30 seconds. Then turn coolerboost off again and wait for the fan to slow down. Does the fan run continously after applying coolerboost or does it enter its off/on-cycle again. Please try it for at least 5 times and repeat it during other Windows sessions for two times. If this trick works, you are the man to make the video! Please help me out here. Please note, that the coolerboost trick will only work until there is load on the system again. If the fan speed picks up again due to load and slows down again, it will enter the annoying pattern, again.
    4. While still reviewing the case and going through my notes, I came across an entry that I reflashed the EC-Controller with the same firmware one or two nights before the problem disappeared. This happened after uninstalling S-Bar and SCM earlier. So, if you are familiar with DOS-Flashing using USB-Sticks you could try to reflash the EC-Controller, than remove all power sources for at least 20 mins. If anyone else is experiencing the problem, please go ahead and report your findings. But please do the reflash only if you are familiar with such things and of course, please do so on your own risk!
Current status and work in progress:
As I haven't gotten hand on a video proofing that simply pushing the coolerboost fan button makes the problem temporarily go away, I am still stuck on there. The coolerboost solution works until the system load increases so much, that the fan level has to be raised. When the system load goes back to idle again, the fan level decreases and enters the off/on-cycle again.
The good news is I managed to customize a programm called fan control tools to somehow automatically apply the changes in RWeverything via a small GUI. This tool will also allow you to set fan profiles for Office, Games, etc. The bad news is, that this will trigger UserAccountControll at least once and it doesn't reapply after a cold boot or returning from hibernate, yet. I am now currently working on a solution that allows the new fan values to be set by Windows automatically using a batch file. This will apply the new values after a normal Windows boot, but not when returning from hibernate, though.
However, if you have found your remedy value for the fan issue within RWeverything, you can turn to Svet in the subforum "Notebook Modified & Private BIOS'ses & EC-FW". He will certainly be able to create you a custom EC-FW with those values written permanently in it.
    My case:
The fan problem with my notebook has not (yet) returned. It has been running without S-Bar/SCM just fine. It can even process all fan profile alterations I have made. So, am I just lucky? While I do believe, that the fans of those notebooks experiencing the issue could be "somewhat odd", I find it hard to believe that my fan really suffered a mechanical problem. Without doing anything mechanical wise, my problem went away.
@Warner: I promised to present more videoproof of the case, but unfortunately I haven't managed to get a hold on a suitable video, especially since my unit has been running fine for the last weeks. Please be patient, if I have enough evidence I will post it asap.
One question bothers me though: looking at the EC-page of RWeverything, I was wondering if these are really all values, that the EC handles and checks. Are there any other values, variables that the EC manages and that are not displayed on the EC-page of RWeverything? The reason for asking this, is because I have a video showing the ECpage of RWeverything while the fan does his off/on-cycle and you can clearly see the RPMvalue correspond to the actions of the fan. As you pointed out, the boosts occur because the EC is missing a fan signal, I could clearly see the RPM value at offset 0xCD respond to the actions of the EC. If the controller looks for that value only, it should surely see the RPMs of the fan, as I can see them in RWeverything. So, I was wondering if the EC has other values not shown in RWeverything, that determine if the EC should enter the boost cycle?
While having another look at that video again, to me it appears as if the EC does this really on purpose. It tries to reduce the voltage of the fan to a point so low, that the fan simply starves. Then it boosts the fan up again. The only question is: why does the EC do that? Is there a leftover setting inside the EC - perhaps from another notebook - where such low RPMs were achievable?
You can find the video here in this zip-file: http://www.file-upload.net/download-7371226/MSI.rar.html
In the zip-file you will find three numbered videos, the first one is the most interesting as it shows the annoying fan cycle while the laptop is running idle. In the second one, the user put load on the system using prime95. The third one shows the system while it cools off again after prime95 has been stopped. Sadly, the video is too short as the system doesn't reach its lowest fan state again. The videos were taken in march in Germany, so the ambient temperature is around 20-21 °C or less (normal room temperature in Germany).

  • Finder has heavy CPU usage: Causing fan to spin constantly

    Hi,
I recently upgraded to Leopard. The upgrade went perfectly. The only thing thats annoying me is that the FINDER is causing heavy CPU usage which is causing my MacBook's fan to spin constantly. I've figured out that the problem is most likely FINDER from the Activity Monitor (I've found that stopping finder eventually causes the fans to spin down and eventually stop.)
Are other people having this problem, let me know? Is apple aware of this problem and will they fix it?

    Hi
I'm not sure whether this helps, but I've noticed that having icon preview switched on (View - Show View Options) can result in a significant amount of CPU usage if you open a folder containing a large number of files, or a small number of movie files etc. On my older Mac, opening a folder containing a handful of WMV files can result in 20 seconds of 50% CPU usage, as it attempts to replace each generic icon with a content specific icon. I have a hunch it's actually opening QuickTime (and Flip4Mac) transparently in the background to capture a frame from each movie and use it as the icon. In the end I switched icon preview off - by default it seems to be on in Leopard. I guess it's most likely to affect older Macs and laptops, in terms of the CPU percentage required. It also seems to result in a fair bit of disk activity as well, again most likely to affect laptops.

  • GTX 970 4G - Fans still spinning every 3 secs

    Hello,
after doing alot of testing and changing i give up and seek for final advice here. Before i continue here is my GPU-Z info:
Problem: When running CS:GO and idling in main menu or watching a movie with 2 connected screens, my gpu keeps starting to turn shortly every ~3 seconds. The temp is constantly at 60 °C, it doesn't go higher or lower. When im playing it goes up to 65 which is perfectly fine cause the fans keep spinning then. When completely idle the fans don't turn at all. Also perfectly fine.
Is the problem just that these tasks force my gpu kinda exactly to 60 °C so the little turns are enough to keep it there, or should the gpu start spinning at 60 °C and keep spinning till cooled to a lower specified value?
    What i've done already:
    BIOS Update
    Driver Backgrade
    Driver Update
Alot of reading which didn't really help in the end
    Thanks in advance!

Im at work atm, do i just need to extract it via gpu-z and upload it? Thanks for your fast answers so far
    Edit from work:
Ive used this tutorial. I can't upload or verify but it should be MSINV316MH.182.

  • 260 GTX fan spins at 100% during games

I've been using a 260 gtx core 216 card for about a week now.  When I'm surfing the web or playing music, the fan spins at 40%.  At idle it is much louder than another non-MSI 260 gtx card I have in a nearly identical box.  When I load a game, almost immediately the fan revs up to 100%, and is just a tab bit less noisy than my wife's hair dryer.  According to PC Wizard 2008, my idle gpu temp is 61 degrees at 40% fan speed.  During a gaming session, the gpu temp is 80 degrees at 100% fan.  I've noticed this problem playing Fallout 3, WoW, Neverwinter Nights 2 and Portal.  The other 260 gtx fan, does not rev during gaming.  My system specs: q6600 at stock speed, thermalright 120 extreme heatsink with 12cm fan, gigabyte EP35 dsr, 4 gig gskill ram, corsair 620 hx powersupply, antec p-182 case.  The other box is identical except for a 600w ps.
Is there anything I should check out on the card before requesting an RMA?
    Thanks

What is the problem actually? At 80 degree celcius during load, your graphic card fan does need to spin at 100% or you'll fry the GPU !. However if your graphic card fan spins at full blast all the time, then there must be something wrong....but as far as your explanation goes,I see nothing is wrong there

  • Overheating/Fans

I bought my iBook back in December 2004, and to date have had no problems with it. Ever since about Thursday, though, my iBook has been overheating causing the fans to come on a lot more then they ever did. The quiet nature of the iBook was one of my favorite things about it, and now that's gone. Is there any way to figure out why this is happening/what is causing it? I think it started happening after I installed some update that Apple prompted me to download (from the mac os x updates under the apple drop down menu). If that truly is the cause, is there any way of uninstalling that update? I want my quiet iBook back! Thanks for any help/thoughts provided.

    Hi Bashere
I would first start Activity Monitor (in Applications/Utilities). There may be a Process stuck in a loop. It may be using lots of %CPU or memory or might even be shown in red (not responding). You can then force quit the App from Activity Monitor. The only time my iBook showed this behaviour it was attempting to print to a printer on a network that I was no longer on. Hope it's something simple

  • High fan speed (but not 100%) following hard drive upgrade

    Hi,
I recently upgraded the hard drive on my 2007 Mac Mini to a 320Gb Western Digital Scorpio Black. Since then, the computer's fan has been very annoying. The fan is not running at 100% all the time, but it ramps up very quickly when the computer is under the lightest of loads. Simply scrolling a webpage will send the fan speed up to around 4500 - 5000 rpm.
My first instinct was that the 7200 rpm drive was creating too much heat, but the temperatures are all fine with the hard drive around 30 - 35 degrees C and the CPU around 35 - 40 degrees C, at a fan speed of 1500 rpm. The temperatures drop down to the 20s when the fan ramps up.
The problem is as described in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
"The computer's fans run at high speed although the computer is not experiencing heavy usage and is properly ventilated."
I've followed the reset SMC procedure several times and yet the problem persists. Can anyone help me to solve this problem? Given the low hard drive temperatures and the fact that the fan is spinning up without disk activity, I'm hoping the drive isn't to blame. I'm getting fairly experienced at working inside the mini, having done three memory upgrades and two hard drive changes, but I would still like to avoid opening it and changing the disk again.
    Thanks,
    David.

Same thing happened to me.  Upgraded HD and RAM, fan spins up at a mere scroll of a web page.
I checked the usual suspects -- vents, foam "T", physical placement, cables back in place.
Also, I went back to the original equipment and found it still "wound up" quickly.
Another data point -- when the fan is accelerating and when at speed, the air coming out of the vents is not very warm.  Windows laptops I use discharge very warm air when the fans spin up.  Could the calibration of the CPU temp guage be off?

  • MSI GTX Twin Frozr 780 Fan not spinning

    Hello ,
Ive had the GTX twin frozr 780 for 5 months now and every 10 to 20 cold start ups of the PC (sometimes more sometimes less) ,the left hand fan will fail to spin causing the other fan to spin at full speed. Rebooting the PC does not correct it, i have to take the side off the PC and gently tap the fan to get it spinning again, then put the side panel back on, i have put up with this for 5 months now and now had enough of it as it seems to be happening more often.
Please help as this little problem is now becoming very annoying.
When i purchased the msi 780 i got 2 off them to run in sli and the other 780 is fine and has no problems.
Ive been a good customer and have bought 4 top end msi graphics cards in the last few years and this is the only one that i've had a problem with.
When i try and rise a RMA with the place of purchase (DABS.COM) it say on there website that i have to return it back to the manufacturer , but when i try to use the msi website returns service its say that i have to return to the place of purchase ..... please could someone help as this is getting very frustrating now
    many thanks Jason

Just got off the phone with dabs.com  and there sending a courier in the morning to pick it up for R.M.A .
    Thanks for your help.
PS just out of interest have you heard of anyone other people with the same issue, as it is very intermittent and was a bit worried that they may not replace it if they can't replicate the fault.

    Hi rhaughan,
I see that you have concerns about your operating temperature of your computer while using resource-heavy applications such as gaming applications. I have an article that will address some of the concerns you have mentioned:
Mac notebooks: Operating temperature - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-is/HT201640
While there are third-party utilities that measure the temperature of a notebook computer, it is important to understand that these utilities are not measuring the external case temperature. The actual case temperature is much lower. Never use third-party applications to diagnose possible hardware issues—instead, contact Apple or go to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.
You should also see this article for even further information about your fans:

  • IMac 2011, screen freezes and fans start spinning

    Hello,
I have this really wierd problem with my iMac i5 2011 edition since a month or so...
A lot of times when I am downloading or watching a movie or playing games under OSX on my iMac my screen slowly freezes, it always starts with my finder and then te rest goes, I get the marble of death and shortly after that the fans start spinning like crazy, they start slow but after a minute or so they make a lot of nice. Take in mind then I am unable to use my iMac in anyway, the mouse moves but it doesn't respond to clicks and also my keyboard doesn't respond, I keep getting the marble of death still.
The wierd thing is that sometimes it doesn't do this for 2/3 days and sometimes it does it like 3/4 in an hour (have to restart manually). Also, this is very interesting, I have a version of Windows 7 installed on my iMac wich I use mainly for gaming and under windows it NEVER freezes in any kind, even when I game like 5/6 hours long straight.
Therefor I thought it must be a software problem so I did a complete system reboot 2 days ago but that didn't help, already froze 3 times since...
Can anyone help me? I still have 2 months of applecare but I have a LAN party soon so I am not to anxious to go 3 weeks without my iMac, maybe there is a simple solution that I am missing...

    Some things you can try:
    1. Try a new user account, create one in System Preferences -> Users and Groups, test to see if the issue still persists in this new user account, this will give us a lot of information. (if the problem is the same or it vanishes, let us know)
    2. Make sure all your software is up-to-date, Apple Logo -> Software update.
    3. Unplug all 3rd party devices, just keep in the necessary, Power, Keyboard + Mouse, no ethernet or external hard drives etc.
    4. Reset the PRAM http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405
    5. Reset the SMC http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    6. Boot to the recovery partition (CMD + R on startup until you see a spinning cog with an apple logo, then let go) -> Choose english as the main language -> Choose Disk Utility -> Select your hard drive from the left pane of Disk Utility (NOT Macintosh HD, the one that will look similar to: 1TB ST3200WAJS) -> Select the 'First Aid' tab -> Bottom right of the window it will say 'S.M.A.R.T Status: ________' ... What does it say after smart status?
    7. While still inside the Recovery Partition, select Macintosh HD -> First Aid (tab) -> Verify Disk -> Repair Disk (unless it says the volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK) -> Verify Disk Permissions -> Repair Disk Permissions (if there are differing permissions on the disk)
Let us know if the issue still persists, but make sure you do all of those steps correctly and post back as much information as possible (PRAM takes two chimes at startup, unplug the power cable for 15 seconds, plug it back in, wait 5 seconds, turn on... make sure you follow all articles)
    Good Luck!

  • PC won't boot: fans stop spinning at start up!

    Hi all
I have a Compaq CQ5335fr that worked just fine for a few years (3).
Then one day, it went off suddenly and wouldn't boot any more:
When I power it up, fans (CPU and chassis) start spinning for 15 seconds then they stop spinning. Only GPU fan keeps spinning. I have still blue and amber lights in the front of the desktop.
I usually push the power up button until it powers off. Then when I restart, same thing!
I tried the following with NO SUCCESS:
    - clean & dust parts
    - Reset CMOS
    - Bought another PSU
    - Played with DIMMS (put one by one, inverted etc.)
    - Unplugged all components and replug one by one
    - And a couple of other desperate things
    - Put the hard drive in another computer to check if data are there: OK (although had "cant' access"  errors in the beginning
    Nothing worked.
