Closing Adobe Reader 7.0 from VB application

Hello!
We have an application in Visual Basic 6.0 in which we take a pdf to make some changes on it.
To handle the pdf document, we use, more or less:
Set AcroApp = createObject("", "AcroExch.App")
set doc = createobject("AcroExch.AvDoc")
We have been using Acrobat 4.0 and it has been working perfectly. However, now we have also installed Acrobat Reader 7.0 and we are getting problems. When Acrobat Reader 7.0 is open, the functions I wrote before crash. I think that is because if an instance of Acrobat 7 is running, it can't be open another version.
So, in order to solve it, we want to close the Adobe Reader 7. I was thinking of doing:
Set AcroApp = getObject("AcroExch.App")
so as to get a handle to the Acrobat Reader 7. After it, I would close it and execute the code we have rigth now to manipulate the pdf document. The problem is that getobject doesn´t work. I guess "AcroExch.App" is not the right parameter.
Could anybody help?
THANK YOU.

>Are there any other APIs available for Adobe Reader?
See the documentation: "Developing Applications using Interapplication
Communication". The third paragraph of "Using OLE".

>Can we do operations like 'Opening PDF file, reading text, closing reader' with Visual Basic, if we have only Adobe reader ?
Not sure about reading text. I doubt that.

  • Opening PDF Files in Adobe Reader XI directly from SharePoint 2013 Site

I am trying to open PDF files in Adobe Reader XI directly from a SharePoint 2013 document library using Internet Explorer 11. When I click the file name it immediately opens the file in Adobe Reader, however it is downloading and opening the file locally
from the Temporary Internet Files location. If I add a comment to the PDF file, and save it will perform a Save As and the location will default to the temporary folder.
If instead of clicking the file name, I click the ellipses in SharePoint, copy the file URL, and go to Adobe Reader, click File > Open and paste the link into the file name, Adobe Reader will correctly open the file directly from the SharePoint site and
prompt for "Open and Checkout, Open, or Cancel".
Is there a way to get it so that when I click the file in IE, I get the same functionality as a File > Open in Adobe Reader?
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi,
According to your description, you want to open pdf file in the Adobe Reader directly from document library.
I suggest you do as the followings:
    1. In SharePoint Central Administration site, click Application Management->Manage Web Applications, select the web application for the site. Click Authentication
Providers, select default zone, and select Yes for "Enable Client Integration?".
    2. click Site Settings-> Site collection features->"Open Documents in Client Applications by Default" click Activate
    3. set the default open behavior for a document library by using the document library settings page.
    4. Enable the “Adobe Arcobat SharePoint OpenDocuments Component”add-on in the IE11.
    5. Add your current site URL to the trusted web sites in IE11.

  • Data Execution Prevention has closed Adobe Reader

I cannot launch Adobe Reader, got the following message
When I close program, a message says "Data Execution Prevention has closed Adobe Reader."  I have searched the Microsoft Community for fixes, but those suggestions don't work.
I'm running Windows Vista Home Basic Version 6 Service Pack 2, 32 bit and I have downloaded Adobe Reader 10.1.4

You can download the 10.1.9 update patch from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5712
Protected Mode is normally disabled from within Adobe Reader Preferences.  Since you cannot even open Adobe Reader, you can disable it via Windows registry: download, unzip, then run the attached registry script.

  • Adobe Reader X process starts but application does not open

I have Adobe Reader X installed on a Windows 7 64bit OS.  Most of the time (95%) when I try to open pdf files that I've saved locally or on the web the process (AcroRd32.exe) will start, but the application and the file do not actually open.
Sometimes I can shutdown the computer and restart and I'm then able to open pdf files.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the application, but the status does not change.  I still continue to have problems opening pdf files.
I have searched, but cannot find this issue in the discussion board...most users get some type of error.  I checked the event logs on Windows and there are no errors.

    Hi Antonyd22,
I've found the same issue using Acro Reader 9 on Windows XP.
Sometimes, when I try to open some PDF documents which are locally saved on my computer, the process AcroRd32.exe (and AcroRd32Info.exe) starts immideately, but the window is not shown for a long time (more than some minutes); trying to start Adobe Acrobat Reader from start menu, the window is shown immideately but it becames "not responding".
It seems that this behaviour is related to some recent file that it is not more accessible (perhaps because it was located on an unavailable network path).
To solve this issue, try to reduce the number of recent files (Edit -> Preferences -> Document -> set "Document in recently used list" to 1) and to open a PDF file that it is available locally (in order to set the last used file); then close and restart Adobe Acrobat.
In my opionion it is a bug that it is still present with Adobe Acrobat Reader 9.4.7.

  • Enabling the Adobe Reader X plugin from Virtualized Browsers

I think I have this one figured out. From virtualized web browsers, I have never been able to use the Adobe Reader X plugin. The Virtual app would start to load any pdf and then crash with a message about a corrupt sandbox (ZAV application sandbox). This would happen if Adobe reader was installed on the machine or virtualized as a shared component. This may be because ARX runs out of its own sandbox. I have now got this working, I will do some testing from some other Browsers.
Application = Virtualized IE8 Configured from a recipe using ZAV 9
Fix = add the following to the "Child Process exception list"
    Acropdf.dll; Acroiehelper.dll; Gbdetect.dll; and Pdfshell.dll
Virtual IE8 can now display PDF's using the web plugin. I will test with firefox and report back.

I had a chance to build this into a virtual Firefox, here are the results.
App = Firefox 12 build from snapshot with the latest flash built into the snapshot.
Test Machines all had different versions of ARX installed.
    Child Process Exception List = Acropdf.dll; Acroiehelper.dll; Gbdetect.dll; and Pdfshell.dll + AcroRd32.exe < Would not work with only the dll's in there
Outcome, this does work, I have seen it load the plugin, load full adobe in the browser or just directly hand the pdf over to adobe application. I have had limited testing with this though. Any updates an I will post them.

This is a very good point, but also other programs use MSVCR90.DLL. (in my case, Autodesk Design Review 2012, for example). If I replace the library, I fear that some other programs will give me problems. At the moment I’m using version 9.0.30729.4148. The file is stored in the C:\WINDOWS\WinSxS\x86_Microsoft.VC90.CRT_1fc8b3b9a1e18e3b_9.0.30729.4148_x-ww_d495ac4e folder, but I also have other versions (like 9.0.30729.1 and 9.0.21022.8) stored in other system folders like the one before.
Doesn't Adobe plan to recompile the Reader following the latest libraries? this would be the better solution for the problem!

  • Calling Adobe Reader for iOS from my iOS App

I have an iOS application that allows readers to view PDF Documents in a child window; Some users want the full search and navigation features of Adobe Reader for iOS, so I would like to be able to pass the PDF Link to the Adobe Reader App on the users iPad .  I am assuming Adobe Reader supports HandleOpenURL so I should be able to launch Adobe Reader and pass it the document using some syntax like:
    AdobeReader://myDocLink.pdf
However I dont know the proper syntax, or if Adobe supports it. Anyone know? thanks!

Satyadev, thanks. Is the ability to "Open with Adobe" Available to developers as an API or library?  Basically I'm using a UIWebView to show the linked Adobe document (ie, "http://mywebserver/documents/myManual.pdf", but I don't want to code in all of the search and navigation features for PDFs;  I want the user to be able to click a button and launch the Adobe Reader App Like safari provides.    ANy suggestions?

  • Rotate Buttons Don't Stay after closing adobe reader

I have several users on Terminal Servers 2008 using adobe reader 9.4. They need to rotate the images in reader, but when they add the rotate buttons to the tool bar, after they close reader and open a new document the buttons no longer  stay this feature worked in the adobe 8 versions.

No, my complaint is that the rotate buttons on the toolbar do not stay, I understand that the rotated image is just a view and would need acrobat to make a change like that.  I am just talking about the buttons in the toolbar.  In the previous versions of adobe reader if you customized the toolbar and added the rotate buttons, then closed and reopened reader the buttons would still be there, now you have to add the buttons manually each time you open adobe.  I have my users using the shortcut keys as a workaround for now, but it would be nice to have the buttons stay permanently.
