CMDLETS to use to push software updates

Hi guys, I'm playing around with the SCCM powershell cmdlets and I'm trying to work out which ones, and what steps are required to push software updates to my clients?
I've created the software update group using the New-CMSoftwareUpdateGroup but I'm not sure what I should be using next to actually deploy them?
I've had a quick look at Start-CMSoftwareUpdateDeployment however I don't see any option where it
would create the deployment package. Also a number of parameters are missing in this cmdlet,
like network share path. Does this cmdlet create a new deployment package or does it just push the software updates to the collection?
Or am I supposed to be using another cmdlet to create the package first?

I've never really found a cmdlet to download updates to a package. You could have a look if
Save-CMSoftwareUpdate does the trick. If not, I always use something like this:

You don't really need ARD to push Apple specific Software Updates to mac clients. You could utilize the Software Update Service instead:

If by Software Updates you mean 3rd-Party applications such as Adobe's suite of products then unless they are .pkgs or .mpkgs you won't be able to. However even for these you could utilize PackageMaker:

and build a .pkg for non-pkg applications and push those out using ARD. Another way of doing this is via the command line man softwareupdate - which can be also be done using ARD.

My Ipod says to use the Ipod software updater application??

I unplugged my Ipod and all the songs got deleted. This is the 3rd time this has happened and now when I plug it in to put the music back on, a box pops up and says "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPod MICHELLE'S (that's my iPod). Use the iPod Software Updater application to restore the iPod to factory settings." What does this mean? & how do I update it to factory settings? Can someone please help?

Using Automator for software updates

Hi all. I apologize in advance if this has been asked and answered numerous times; I did several searches using different terms and did not find my answer.
Can I use Automator to do all my software updates completely automatically? Including doing the restarts? I know this is a very basic question for most all of you; I can use my computer but really don't know a lot about using it to the max. I would like to be able to have all the software updates done during the night, while the computer is unattended.

If you are not too keen on running those commands you might want to try http://www.igetter.net/iGetter.html This download manager seems to allow the scheduled downloading that you need. I think you would have to go to the Apple site and find the url for the standalone updaters to find the link after Software Update identifies them. Then use this program to schedule the downloads. Sometimes those seem more stable anyway.
The program us shareware. It appears from the description that the program remains fully functional but puts up a nag screen if the program has not been registered.

SCUP 2011 would be the way to do it or a package/program. There are commercial software solutions that plugins to configuration Manager like Secunia

Wireless is connected, but cannot use safari, itunes, software update

Im having trouble with my macbook pro right now. The network diagnostics show that my connection is fine, but safari won't connect to any sites.
With safari, it doesn't say anything about not being able to connect, it just shows the loading icon on the url bar and a white page.
iTunes won't connect, and same with Software update. I do not have any antivirus right now.
My time machine is working, but that uses a different router(the one on the time machine)
Ive tried resetting safari among other things and nothing has worked. Any suggestions?

Do you use the right channel and right encryption settings?
This should be checked!
It should be able to change the WLan channels in device manager -> WLan card -> Properties -> Advanced tab
But I would also recommend disabling the encryption and password in router settings and to connect to Open Wlan of course this should be done only for testing purposes if the notebook would be able to connect to the open router, then this would mean that you used a wrong password.
How about WLan driver update? Did you update the WLan driver? If not do that!

Wrong name on new server in DMZ to be used for Internet software updating

I unfortunately put the external name as my internal name when installing as a DP, MP, SUP, etc on a new server 2012 r2. Now I'm trying to remove services from SCCM 2012 r2 for the new server but it is hung trying to remove the "Component server"
role. It doesn't have permission to run the command.
I will than re-add the server with the correct names. It will not just let me just change the name of course.
Any suggestions????

Freezes when using Mail, Safari, Software Update

It seems like every time I try to connect to the internet, everything putters out. I get a completely frozen desktop, except for my mouse. trying to force quit troublesome programs doesn't work either. I have to hold down the power button and reboot the whole computer.
usually it's mail, but safari does it too. whenever the grey bars arranged in a spinning circle come into play, i might get some weird pixelations and everything goes kaput.
any suggestions? thanks!

Using internal software update server (SUS) with iTunes

We are using an internal software update server (SUS) to manage the release of patches, etc. to our mac clients. There are no known issues with this server or the process. However, it appears that iTunes is still checking Apple's website first for updates, and by-passing our internal server. So we have Mac clients indicating an update to iTunes is available, but when software update is launched, no iTunes updates are available from our internal server, since we have not released them internally yet.
Is there a setting in iTunes that we can change so that iTunes checks our internal SUS site first?

You need to look at this from the server side, not
the client side.
Open Server Admin, connect to your server and look at
the list of updates that Software Update has
available. Specifically check if there are any blue
warning icons alongside any update. These are updates
that the server has not yet downloaded from Apple,
and therefore are not available to clients.
I've seen this happen periodically on my SUS. The fix
is annoying, but simple just stop and restart the
SUS. It should download the pending updates and make
them available to clients.
Thanks for the reply. Actually there were blue exclamation points next to newer updates, yet I just waited and the server finished downloading and mirroring them and then they went away. The screenshots above were taken when there were no exclamation points in the software list and when all the updates were available in the list.

Should using the software update service be faster for the clients then downloading from apple?

I've got about 25 clients, a mixture of Snow Leopard and Lion systems in the office. I've recently turned on the Software update service on my snow leopard server (10.6.8, mac mini) and have a transparent server setup for the software updates service (dns redirects through the mini). All the machines see the mini and I believe they are pulling updates from it when the client runs their software update. I haven't noticed any real speed differnce though from pulling updates from the mini vs pulling from apple (though I have noticed less internet congestion).
Should this be faster because it's a local network transfer or not?

Are you saying you're masking Apple's DNS so that requests for swupdate.apple.com end up on your machine? That's the wrong approach. You should be setting the client's preferences to load from your server instead of Apple's.
In either case, there are three components to running Software Updaate.
1: download the catalog of available updates and compare what's installed to the list to identify which updates are needed
2: download the appropriate updates
3: install the updates.
Of the three steps, downloading the catalog is a lightweight process - the index is only a few hundred KB, so the difference in loading this from your server vs. Apple's is minimal. Additionally, this won't make any difference in the amount of time it takes the client to scan for which updates are needed since that's all work performed locally on the machine.
The only step that will be significantly faster is the actual downloading of available updates. These should happen at LAN speeds, rather than your internet connection speed (which is, presumably, slower), but then again, most updates are fairly small - a few megabytes is typical.
However, if no updates are available, or if they're only small, you won't see much difference in time between local and remote. The main advantage of using a local software update server is that you only need to download the updates from Apple once, rather than once per client.

Is it mandatory that the same apple id used for purchase should be used to get software updates? What happens if os x was purchased using one apple id and you use another to check for updates?

I think the operating system is the one exception to the rule that usually the purchase is linked to the Apple ID rather than the machine, but with operating systems (Lion, Mountain Lion) the purchase is tracked on the machine instead.

Restart computers after software update

Trying to start using ARD 3.x to push software updates to hundreds of computers (eMacs, iBooks running 10.3.x and 10.4.x) on campus. Have been successful at pushing the update using softwareupdate -i -a .... but wondering how others are forcing the workstations to restart after the software update completes.
Any suggestions? Thanks

Here is how I do it. Once the update command has completed and is showing the history, I reselect the complete list and then from the manage menu I selece Restart. It brings up an option for users to save any changes or cancel the restart or users lose unsaved changes. At the bottom right is a restart button. Clicking that will send the command for the machine to restart.
