COMPRESSION OF HD 1920 X 1080 TO WEB FRIENDLY SIZE

Another simple question but i can't keep trial and error on which compression setting to choose.
Here the question: I have 3 minute 1920 x 1080 HD Video, i want to make web friendly/e-mail-able. The last compression setting i used was H264 which cropped the image and destroyed the aspect ration.
Which one should i use??

Patrick,
We're offPatrick,
We're off to a good start...i tried that in the sequence setting.....405 x 720...however the result i got was just a cropped picture....i just tried yet another quicktime conversion filter H261....the whole picture now appears it is just squished into the 4 X 3..
I have a hunch one of these quicktime conversion settings can do the trick...if you don't know do you have any resources were i might find out...

  • Web-friendly size, form and shape?

For web streaming… what is the workflow for 24p AND widescreen 16:9 AND a manageable size (4.5 minute short < 100Mb)… how can this be accomplished?
Source footage is 1080i60 (Sony HVR-A1), FCP 5.1.4 with the Nattress pluin.

    Hey macaSTAT,
As far as I know, it is impossible to achieve true 16:9 on YouTube. All their videos are played back with a frame size of 425x318 which has a 4:3 aspect ratio. It IS possible, however, to encode your video so that YouTube will display it "letterboxed" within those dimensions. By letterboxed I mean with black bars on the top and bottom so that your 16:9 video does not appear stretched to fill the 4:3 frame. That issue is addressed in that Ken Stone article I linked to. It's about halfway down under the "Frame Size Scaling to Boot!" section.
If you've seen a video on YouTube that plays back at true 16:9 without letterboxing, please link to it because I'd love to do that myself!
    Does that make sense?

  • Why does 1920 x 1080 sequence export as 1888 x 1062 quicktime?

    can any one tell me why when i export a 1920 x 1080 sequence using Export Size Option Preset "HD 1920 x 1080 16:9" i get a quicktime that is 1888 x 1062?
    thanks

    none compression
i did another test. if i use the preset "1920 x 1080 HD" (which is different than the preset "HD 1920 x 1080 16:9" - both are in the pull down export size option list), i get a quicktime that is 1920 x 1080.
still, i am curious what is happening there....

  • Does iMovie'08 import 1920 x 1080 at 1440 x 1080

After some thought the subject (Sony HDR SR11 resolution) of my last post yesterday may include all HD camcorders with 1920 x 1080 resolution. when iMovie'08 imports the files they are saved as quicktime movies. When played in quicktime and the details looked at in Movie Inspector (quicktime/window/show movie inspector) the format is shown as Apple Intermediate Codec 1440 x 1080,
    Does iMovie'08 import 1920 x 1080 at 1440 x 1080 and then output it at 1920 x 1080 ?

    Hi(Bonjour)!
Look at this very interesting link about H.264 CODEC and web compression:
    http://www.kenstone.net/fcphomepage/qt_h-264_moviesfcp.html
As WEB involves many compression and smaller frame sizes, the quality will be on par for both formats.
iDVD will accept HD sequences movies from FCE but it will convert them to standard definition as it cannot output (authoring and burning) high def blu-ray DVD.
Look at this link (altough you don't have ProRes codec with FCE package...) about HDV limitation for DVD usage:

  • AVCHD / 60p / 1920 x 1080

    Greetings,
    I am using a Canon R42 Camcorder.
    (1) What is the advantage to recording in AVCHD, 60p, 1920 x 1080 for Vimeo, YouTube, etc? Any advantage at all? Under what circumstances would you record at those settings? I am going to assume if the final intent is to burn to Blue Ray but am not sure.
    (2) When starting Premier Pro one can select either 'DV' or 'HDV'. I assume that latter is for 1920 x 1080 output?
    (3) I am using the Trial Version of Premier Pro and am confused as to what benifits are gained by this being tied into CC?
As always, thank you very much.
    Ron

To add just a little bit to Jeff's well worded response...
There are a few "cloud" features in the Creative Cloud. If you consider the 20GB storage, and the web based Behance and Prosite features. But no, they really should not have used "Cloud" because it has caused them more trouble than it is worth, I think.
But as you have heard, the processing is on your computer. In fact, I really wish I could set up two or more computers locally to process video, but Premiere Pro does not support render farms. Not yet.
    On the subject of video...
I like shooting 60p but there are disadvantages. Let's take my camera for example. I shoot with the Panasonic DMC-GH3.
When I shoot at 60p I can't use the Extended Teleconverter. That is a feature that causes the camera to just use the 1920X1080 pixels in the center of the sensor when shooting video. What that means is that instead of using the entire sensor and then scaling it down to fit the 1080p standard, the camera just shoots with the pixels it needs. So everything looks 2.6 times closer. I was shooting boats on the water today and I used it for the first time. I was shooting things almost full frame that I could barely see with my naked eye. Pretty cool. But I had to shoot 30p or 24p to do that.
Let's talk about quality of the video, based in part on compression. If I shoot 60 frames per second and store it at 50Mb/s then the compression is twice what it is when I shoot 30p and store it at 50Mb/s. I get even higher quality by compressing it less when I shoot 24p at 50Mb/s. Make sense, right?  When I bought the camera I thought I would be shooting 24p all-intra, which while it is easy on the PC, has to store a lot more information because every frame has all of the information instead of some of them just storing the changes from the key frame. So storing it at 72Mb/s is still compressing it more than standard 24p at 50Mb/s.
Now, I have to say I don't really see the difference, but I haven't stressed the quality of the image in my editing workflow either. Not yet anyway. If I was going to use a Digital Intermediate, I would stick to the method that compresses my video the least.
Keep in mind that there are a lot of people who swear that 24p is more "film like" due to the motion blur and movement. I find it hard to disagree with them. I want to, but it appears that 24p is less "real" and makes it easier to suspend disbelief. People can get lost in the story. When people see 30fps or 60fps they complain that it is too real. They are used to seeing their TV news that way, not their movies. They can't see fantasy at the same quality and motion attributes as they see their news. Not yet anyway. Gamers who play at even higher frame rates may eventually take over the world, but apparently "The Hobbit" at 48fps annoyed a LOT of purists.

  • Tips for Exporting 1920 X 1080 HD for use in iDVD?

I have a Canon HF20 and noticed that exporting from iMovie '08 using Share >Media Browser or Share > Export Movie limits you to 960 X 540. I used iDVD to create a DVD of the 960 X 540 movies and had good results, but I am wondering if the 960 X 540 ratio is truly HD? And would going to the 1920 X 1080 via Export Using Quicktime make a significant difference? I would like to try using Export Using Quicktime and then using iDVD to burn an HD DVD, but I am wondering if someone can tell me what the settings within the Options should be in terms of the following:
    Compression Type
    Frame Rate
    Compressor Quality
    Encoding
    Data Rate
And then Under Export Size Settings
    Dimensions
    Preserve Aspect Ratio
    Deinterlace Source Video
And any other settings that are going to help me achieve the best results for exporting 1920 X 1080 and burning to DVD via iDVD?

    Hi
    *Movie editors*
    • iMovie HD 6, iM'08 & 09 - might work to do the editing
I prefere when reaching for pro-quality FinalCut but observ that Express only
    handles 25/50 and 29.97/60 fps.
So if You are thinking 1920 x 1080 24 fps - ONLY as far as I know option is
FinalCut Studio Pro. Which can do this !
    *DVD burning programs*
    • NO version of iDVD can handle HD yet - up till iDVD 09
    *Options are*
    • DVD Studio pro in FinalCut Studio Pro bundle (me guessing - but feeling safe)
    • Roxio Toast™ 10 Pro incl Blue-Ray component - Can do this

  • See if I'm doing this correctly - Starting create an HD 1920 X 1080 Slidesh

    Hello All;
I'm new to FCP and am using FCP 6 from Final Cut Studio. I need to create a High definition Slideshow that will be shown on both a computer screen and a TV.
After opening FCP, I select NEW PROJECT and then New Sequence. Then I Then from the sequence menu, I select settings and in there select a frame size of 1920 X 1080 HDV 1080i.
My photos are at a resultion of 3008 X 2000. Then I import these into the timeline.
Two questions - First, is this the basic way to set up a HDV video project, and second, will the photos (Which are a higher resolution than HD), scale to fit the screen without changing the aspect ratio ? It looks like it's working correctly but before I get too far, I thought I'd ask the forum. Thanks.
    Tim

Should I do a custom frame size and set it to 1920 X 1080. Then, select ProRes 422 for the codec ?
You choose the ProRes 422 EASY SETUP. This adjusts everything. Make a new sequence and that sequence will have those settings.
Would I set the Pixel Aspect Ratio to square and the field dominance to none ?
Well, ProRes 422, if you choose a 1080p setting, will have no field dominance and is square pixel.
I also want to create a smaller DV version for playback on a TV.
You will compress the master to a smaller format when you are done...with Compressor.

  • 1920 x 1080 to a DVD

I have been using standard definition cameras at the school I teach at. We recently updated to Sony HD cameras and am having problems exporting longer videos to IDVD. I have a video shot in 1920 x 1080. The video is approximately 2 hours long. I want to dump it onto a Dual Layer DVD using IDVD. I am using Final Cut Pro 7. When I export out of Final Cut the file size is almost 90 GB and it won’t fit on a DVD. Since 2 hour movies can be stored on a professional  DVD I was hoping someone can explain what  I need to do to compress this enough without losing too much quality? Do I change the capture setting to a lower quality? If so any recommendations would be appreciated.

Unless you are exporting using QT conversion the 90GB file represents your sequence settings in FC which is most likely what you shot on the Sony Camera in this case HD.
Be aware that unless you are creating a Blu-Ray disc at some point you (or the program you use) will be converting your 1920 (HD) footage to SD. There is no other HD options.  You can create simple Blu-Ray discs in Compressor but outside of that all Mac options (excluding Adobe Encore) are essentialy SD.
IDVD & DVD Studio Pro (all SD DVDs) convert and/or work with MPG-2 & AC3  or uncompressed audio files. These files are either made during the build/burn process or could be made with Compressor.
These files are considerably smaler than the export from FC. Size will be dependent on the compression settings you choose or IDVD may have a make it fit setting when you choose single or dual layer export.
Converting your HD movie to SD before exporting from FC could also be another option.
Another thing to be aware of:

  • I'm trying to export an ID image as a jpg and don't know how to save it at 1920 x 1080.

Could use some advice on the following question:
I'm trying to export an image as a jpg and don't know how to save it at 1920 x 1080.

Thanks Eugene. I was taking the question literally—the OP wanted to directly save a .jpg at 1920x1080 from ID.
If the ID document is set up as 1920x1080 pixels you could export as PDF and open into PS at exactly 1920x1080 by setting the res to 72 in the import dialog.
Of course the converted PDF has no compression applied (at least to native ID objects) and would have some higher quality than an exported High quality JPEG.
But the OP needs a JPEG and if you want to compare compression artifacts, you would have to save the opened PDF as JPEG, close and reopened. With PDF there is the option of saving the opened PDF with Maximum quality, which is probably better than ID's JPEG export High quality. But If I compare the 2 methods in a layered PS file it's hard to discern a meaningful difference. See Compare.psd in this zip

  • How do you segment a long project and preserve HD 1920 x 1080 pixels at each step?

I'm shooting video with a Canon HF S10 in the maximum quality (1920 x 1080 i) mode.  The resulting files in AVCHD format are coming into the computer and into Elements 7 okay.  The desired  Project output is BluRay.  I want to maintain the full image quality (1920 x 1080) end-to-end (lesser quality is okay on the timeline if that all that is available).  My current project is about 65 minutes long--future ones could be two hours or more.  All the 100+ trimmed clips and transitions are on the timeline.  Saving the Project file seems to work, but re-opening the Project takes a long time and doesn't always work.  Rendering this long timeline ulitimately freezes/crashes.  When the Project was much shorter, the save and reload cyle worked okay.
Per Steve's book a work around is to break the project into pieces around 10 minutes long, render and save them to AVI files, reload and merge the AVI files into a new "Master" Project and then render the whole thing to BluRay(?).  Better yet he suggests outputing to a folder and burning the disc with other software.  But Elements does not output BluRay to a folder.  And when I experimented outputing with AVI segment files, quality dropped a lot suggesting that the 1920 x 1080 is not preserved in AVI format.
    It appears that:
AVI files are just the DV 720 x 480 image quality of mini DV tape
Output to a folder in BluRay image format is not available
Elements 7 does not support breaking an HD 1920 x 1080 timeline into segments for long projects
Any ideas will be appreciated.  Canon does supply a crude editing software package that is claimed to do simple cuts and transitions and produce a file that can be loaded back into the HF S10 memory for playback (distributing product on SD cards instead of BluRay is a novel possibility).  I'd prefer to use Elements or a similar software product that takes me start to finish without losing any pixels.
Finally, I have a backlog of several long projects using HDV tape as a source.  I want those to go to BluRay too, but not giving up any of the 1440 x 1080 pixels.  I think the same limitations above apply to HDV.
After waiting several years to get this end-to-end capability, it is disappointing to find it still seems to be out of reach (maybe is just hidden).
Sometime soon, I hope Steve will write an edition that deals exclusively with the end-to-end HD (1920 x 1080) work flow including best scaling of still images, storage of image files and output to BluRay and creating slide shows using all the HD pixels (no SD compromises) again on BluRay.  That of course means Adobe may need to add some tweaks in Elements 8.
    Terry 9391
PS, my PC is using an Intel Core 2 Quad processor, Vista OS, 4 GB of memory, has access to several TB of HD, and a couple of GB of Ready Boost memory (does this really help?) and a 1920 x 1200 monitor.

You could export each section as 1920x1080 MPEG2 using the Share>Personal Computer>MPEG option then selecting the MPEG2 1920x1080i export Preset.
You can also export as AVI... however this will be uncompressed AVI with a file size of over 1GB per minute... File>Export>Movie then in Settings under General>File Type select Microsoft AVI (not Microsoft DV AVI). Then in Video>Compressor select None, in Frame Size set 1920x1080 and in PixelAspect Ratio select Square Pixels.

  • Is the LG 22EN33S-B 22-inch LED 1920 x 1080 VGA Monitor compatible with mac via a vga to thunderbolt connection

Is the LG 22EN33S-B 22-inch LED 1920 x 1080 VGA Monitor compatible with mac via a vga to thunderbolt adapter?

The 1080p and 1080i options only appear on the HDMI display settings, the display settings for the thunderbolt to vga adaptor has 1920 x 1080.
Via the HDMI output of the Mini via an HDMI cable to a HDMI input on the Samsung the display fills the screen but the text looks vile.
The options for picture adjustement on the samsung include fill screen as you suggest
Using the thunderbolt to VGA adaptor the text looks as it should, crisp and clear but the display is shitfted to the right.
The options for picture adjustment on the Samsung does not have the 'fill screen' option available when the VGA input is selected. However a new option called 'pc screen adjustment' appears and you can nudge the display over to the left a bit but not enough to cover the whole screen.
I remind you the pc worked perfectly 1920 x 1080 on the same VGA cable and input to the samsung.

  • Full HD (1920 x 1080) through Apple digital AV Adapter not working on iPad 2 running  iOS 5.1.1

    Hi,
can anybody shed some light on this?
I remember being able to play back FULL HD (1920 x 1080) clips with the AVPlayer-HD app with iOS 4.x
Now, running iOS 5.1.1 it does only play back up to 1280 x 720.
Also, the quality of the mirrored iPad2 screen looks as if it was a composite connection only, very unsharp.
This was diferent - much better before. I used to do presentations like this.
If this is an iOS5.1.1 problem, does someone know a way to downgrade to older versions without jailbreaking it?
    All the best,
    theunknown_uwe

It works just fine with me (5.1.1, iPad 3 (I don't think the iPad 2 is any different), latest AVPlayerHD, MP$ hardware playback). What do you see in the center of the screen when you tap the TV icon on the center right, right under the speed lever? 1920 * 1080 just like in the screenshot below? (When the res is left at VGA, the print would be 640 * 480):

I have DSLR still photos shot at 1920x1080 (16:9)  ratio

    If I create a timeline in FCP7   choosing  a 1920 x 1080   preset (HDTV)...
---when I place the photo on the timeline--   it does not fit the frame.  Black bars on each side.

To further confound the situation -- If I create a colored test jpeg in photoshop 1920 x 1080 (square pixels  72 dpi)  and drop that in the FCP7 timeline-- it fills the  frame perfectly.

Click on one of your imported pictures in the FCP browser, and once selected, type Command + 9 to see the properties for the clip. Either report those properties here or take a screen shot and post the screen shot of the item properties here.
Next, click anywhere on you sequence timeline, and then type Command + 0 {zero} to see the Sequence Settings. Either report the Sequence Settings here or take a screen shot and post the screen shot of the Sequence Settings here.

Does this mean the actual pixel dimensions are not 1920 x 1080, but are in the 16x9 ratio?
FCP7 has a limit of dealing with still images - they can be no wider than 4000 px in the widest dimension.

  • I get 1888 x 1062 and not 1920 x 1080 with preset HDV 1080i

I have a QT movie in the Animation codec sized 1920 x 1080. Using QuickTime 7 Pro, if I export it to the Apple Intermediate Codec having set the compressor preset to HDV 1080i it produces a movie sized 1888 x 1062. Why?
    Thank you!

Thank you. I see that with aperture set to "Production" it does show the black frame making it up to 1920 x 1080.
When I import HDV 1080i video from my camera to Final Cut Express the files on the scratch disc are Apple Intermediate Codec. However they do not have this black frame and the size is 1920 x 1080. So it looks like FCE is not respecting this standard.

  • Quicktime Export 1920 x 1080

    Hi
    Using CS5 Master Collection.
I am giving my finished output to someone who is doing color correction for me.  The source is 1920 x 1080, (1.9), 29.97 fps Progressive.
They want a quicktime format.  Not an AVI.
I am looking at the Export Settings for QuickTime and I only see 720 x 480, in various flavors.
Certainly there must be a way in premiere to export to Quicktime 1920 x 1080????
I assume there are plenty of threads here, but thought I'd start from scratch and get some recommended "best practices" for this issue.
    Thanks

    Good day to you all.
I'm having real problems exporting to Quicktime but I'm in the UK and obviously the format is PAL rather than NTSC, but I'm not sure if that affects the QuickTime settings.
I'm using PPro CS5 and I have downloaded the AVID codecs, mentioned above, and I can see them in the Video Codec menu.
    My source file is:
    Format: .avi
    Frame rate: 25
    Duration: 5m 30s
    Size: 720 x 576 (1.4587)
    Audio: 48000Hz - 16 bit - stereo
I want to output this to play on iPads, Macs, etc. in the UK. Which setting should I be using as I have gone around in ever decreasing circles and keep getting the "Error compiling movie", "Unable to create or open output file" dialogue.
    Many thanks in advance.
    Gerry
