Compressor 3 Squeeze 16:9 to 4:3

Hi,
My problem is the render from Compressor give a squeeze aspect.
When I use Final cut 6 render Quicktime conversion, all render ok.
But for a reason of efficiency, I want to use Compressor 3
My source: any HD source (pal)
Final cut project setting: 720/576 anamorphic 16:9
Need to render to 720 * 576 anamorphic (1024 * 576 aspect)
Each time I try with compressor with or without the anamorphic 16:9 checked,
I got the same 720 * 576 with squeeze aspect.
Is it possible to get a non squeeze render from Compressor3 like Finalcut do it perfectly?
many thanks

What is your goal here? Export for web, DVD?
DV PAL anamorphic has the exact same frame size as DV PAL, but the pixel aspect ratio is different. To view DV PAL anamorphic correctly, it needs to be stretched upon viewing.
If you want to export for web, you need to set the 16:9 frame size in Compressor with a square pixel aspect ratio. Have a look here for advice on 16:9 frame sizes: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7928935#7928935
If you want to export for DVD, there is no need to change the frame size. Just export using the DVD Best Quality 90 minutes, and make sure the aspect ratio is set to 16:9 in the Video Format tab in the Inspector window.

  • Compressor Size Change

I have a .mov file that I need to compress. The video is a 16:9. When I drag the file into compressor it automatically changes it to 4:3. How do I stop it from doing this?

Well, I don't think the settings are the problem. I can get it back to 16:9 by cropping. The issue arises when I initially drag the video into compressor. The initial video is 16:9. Immediately after dragging it into compressor it squeezes the video to 4:3. Everything becomes very thin looking. You might be right, but I didn't think it was a settings problem. Keep in mind I am very new to compressor.

  • Wierd HDV to SD DVD anamorphic problem

I've read many articles on this workflow, but I haven't seen anyone with my particular problem yet.
I have an HDV 108060i FCP project. Footage captured from a Canon HV30 and some graphics done in Motion. The editing process went great. I output my final HD project back to my camera. Looks fantastic.
Now I want to make a SD DVD.
I export a non self contained ref movie from the FCP timeline. When I look at this movie, it's 1920x1080. Not anamorphic... not 1440x1080. When I view this movie, a circle is a circle. When I get movie info, it says it's a 1440x1080, but in movie properties, the size says 1920x1080.
But I continue. I drop this file into Compressor, and use the default DVD MPEG best quality settings. Compressor makes a 16x9 file thats 720x404. What I believe I want and need is a 720x480 movie that's squeezed. Otherwise I'm losing resolution.
Funny thing is, when I export a still frame TGA from the same timeline, it's squeezed! 1440 x 1080.
Then I go back to an older SD project, where I've produced DVDs successfully in the past. When I export from a DV anamorphic project, all is right. The exported movie is squeezed, the MPEG 2 from Compressor is squeezed and it plays great on both widescreen and 4:3 TVs after authoring in DVDSP.
Can anyone help? Gotta make a SD DVD by day's end tomorrow!
    Thanks
    Brian

If you're opening an anamorphic NTSC-sized .m2v file in QuickTime Player, it will be displayed as 720x404 because the QT MPEG-2 Playback Component uses square pixels for display. When imported into DVDSP, the file should be read as 720x480.
As for exported stills being 1440x1080, that is also normal behavior. FCP uses the frame size, in your case 1440x1080, and not the display size (1920x1080).
But you mention that some of this behavior is different than what you've seen with past DV Anamorphic material. How so? What did those .m2v files get displayed as in QT Player?

  • An odd aspect ratio question

    Hi All,
Here's a new one for me.  I have a client who wants a finished movie to be 786x280; a very strange aspect ratio, no?
Anyway.  I'm getting footage which will be HDV, 4:3, SD and graphics.  If I make my sequence that very odd number I'm not going be able to edit very efficiently, right?  I'll have to render video all the time...
I had a thought of making a sequence of 920x720 and placing a photoshop image of the same size with a mask of 786x280 and working all the video inside that...then cropping the finished movie afterwards...
    any suggestions?
    thanks.
    g

Yes, that is exactly what I would do. Create a graphic in Photoshop that is standard video size with a 786x280 hole in it. Bring that into FCP and place it on top of everything else. Then you can lower its opacity a bit to see what is being cut off. Then when you bring the finished video into Compressor or Squeeze or whatever you are using, crop it there to 786x280. You will be able to see where to crop.

  • Removing Length Restrictions in iDVD (Burning disk larger then 5GB)

Hi Ho all, i'm at my wits end here, i have been creating a dvd for my sisters friend her wedding, after finally completing everything but the dvd part i was really surprised when i went to save image it says "Your project exceeds the maximum content duration. To burn this project, remove some content."
Let me first off by saying how disapointed of mac for putting this restriction on the software, i really need to get this lifted because the stuff is about 1.28GB thats the media but in iDVD it shows as 5.1GB. and it won't allow me to make any changes. Has someone made a hack for this or found a way around, because if i can save it as an image then i can use DVD2oneX and shrink it.
Cheers for all your help, im off to bed it's 5:05AM now, lol
[email protected] - if there is a solution please reply to this or email me, thanks

DVD Studio Pro, with Compressor, gives you more compression options. Particulary the ability to endcode AC3 audio which frees up space. Mind you, it is now only packaged with Final Cut Studio ... and that runs around 1,300 Cdn right now.
Also, there are some logical restrictions to how much video you can cram onto a single layer DVD. Even using Compressor to squeeze, say, 3 hours onto a single layer disk, you are knocking the numbers to the point where the quality is going to be affected.
In iDVD, when you have a project that is just shy of the two hour mark, you can definitely have some quality issues. Studio Pro gives you more options but as stated, not a price for the faint hearted.
And 80 bucks for Toast is a great deal. Although I use iDVD and DVD Studio Pro for my "movies" Toast is, in my humble opinion, a valuable DVD/CD creation tool

  • H.264 import

Hi, I'm having some problems with importing HD files to DSP. I have created a HD PAL project and I have some uncompressed .mov files created in After Effects in 1920x1080. Now I would like to use Compressor to squeeze 'em. So I pick up HD DVD: H.264 Settings, all goes well. But then, DVD Studio Pro tells me I cannot import the file - "Incompatible Format" issue. I can still compress it with MPEG-2 settings but the movie looks terrible. Could you tell me please what I'm doing wrong? Why DSP cannot import the H.264 file?

Shawn, there are three settings in Compressor which are especially prepared for HD DVD - one for MPEG-2 and two for H.264, so I'm sure there is a way to compress it. Using MPEG-2 makes my video look quite nasty. I am not double compressing it. H.264 is better - I just don't know why DSP says it's incompatible

  • Can't render audio!

I cannot render any music tracks in the timeline. I keep getting the file error, access denied pop up. I am not using DMR protected music at all. If I must convert to aiff, how must I do so?

Audio clips to be used for editing in FCE need to be converted to AIFF, 48khz, 16bit. You should be able to use iTunes to do the conversion. Alternatively, QuickTime Pro, Compressor, Sorenson Squeeze, SoundTrack Pro and many other available applications can also handle the task. Convert the files PRIOR to importing into FCE.

  • Best way to output 140 minutes of video to DSP?

i have a video project that is 145 minutes long. My desire is to make it into one DVD...not two. Can compressor squeeze this so that it can fit onto a 2 hour DVD?

Sure, Compressor can squeeze it down to fit - there is even a preset for 150 minutes of material in Compressor 2 & 3 - but the question is whether or not the quality will be acceptable. Also, you've got to make sure your audio is Dolby Digital (not an issue for Compressor 3.0.x - as it has no AIFF preset - but definitely something to look out for if you're using Compressor 2.x)
At those bit rates (I believe about 3.5 average, 5 max) anything with reasonable motion can fall apart - pixelation, etc - very quickly. Taking heads stuff should be fine though.
Or are you asking this question because you've tried the Compressor preset already?

  • DVD Settings & Black Levels

    Hi,
I just switched from using Compressor 2, too Sorenson Squeeze 4.3. I've encoded some shows with it and haven't been that impressed.
First: The Blacks in the video are really dark. Everything I import into Final Cut comes in at 0 ire. When I used Compressor, it added setup to 7.5 ire.
Does Squeeze add setup? I could not find anything in the settings or manual about this.
Second: As I mentioned above, I haven't been impressed with the quality. Here are the settings I use for Squeeze. Any comments?
    Format Constraints: DVD (MPEG2)
    Stream Type: Program
    Codec: MPEG-2 Video
    Method: 2-Pass VBR
    Data Rate: 5000
    Format: NTSC
    Frame Size: 720 x 480
    Frame Rate: 29.97
    Aspect: 4:3
    Field Encoding: Bottom First
All projects come from Final Cut Pro 5, I export using Quicktime Movie, than drag the file into Squeeze and encode.
    Thanks,
    Mike A.

Some encoders (I use bitVice more than Compressor) do have certain "corrector" selections that can be made which would affect how the final m2v looks.
For instance, using bitVice as an example, it has a DV Luma corrector and a DV Chroma Corrector to adjust based on the codecs/gamma (make it light/dark), but as they say let your eyes be the final judge (bitVice is the help section ) and usually I find the best results is to color correct and then encode without any further changes in the encoder.
What may be happening is that Compressor may be doing some changes automatically based on the movie it is encoding (or you may have checked a selection?) Squeeze may in fact in be producing a more accurate encode to the material. (In fact it sounds like it may be closer to what is actually there if it is darker if you had not done any corrections to the footage)
    That said the workarounds
1.) The best - monitor the video in FCP on a broadcast calibrated monitor via a card to see what is going on (and use the scopes also to see your black and white levels)
2.) Become accustomed to the shift between a FCP color corrected clip (assuming what it looks like after the encode) and the encoder you are using. BUT be very careful. What looks "good" on the computer screen will look poor in real life (DVD on TV) Use your scopes more than your eyes if you use a computer monitor, and realize the a properly adjusted video for TV will probably look "off" on a computer monitor. Also perhaps download bitVice demo and see if you like the results vis a vis Compressor and Squeeze, it may be worthwhile to look at)

  • Compressing to h264 flv

    Hi All,
We need to compress quicktime mov files to flv files using an H264 codec for the video and AAC for the audio.  It's so that our streaming solution can easily convert them for iOS (Don't ask why/how etc - that's just what they need)
We have compressor, Sorenson Squeeze and Adobe Media Encoder and none of them will let me do it.  I can create flv with the On2 codec and MP3 audio.  I can create MP4s with AAC audio but can't output them as .FLV.  Changing the file extension doesn't do the trick.
Apparanty FFMpeg does it but we are solely mac based.  Does anybody know of a way of doing this on a Mac please?
    Regards
    Richard

Hi Richard Have a look at this http://compressorpack.com/presets.php there is a FLV export preset
i,m not sure if this works with Compressor 4 but its only a bunch of preset so you might be able to ad them manually
    thanks

  • Capture SD uncompressed 720 x 480 with Kona LH?

Previous projects I used my G5 with Final Cut 5 and an AJA IO, to capture Uncompressed SD at 720 x 480. Now with my MacPro, Kona LH, Final Cut 6 it will only allow me to capture 720 x 486 Uncompressed SD. Anyone else experience this? I know I'm probably the only one still using SD, but I'd like to get my new footage to mix with previously captured video for DVD. Source footage is Beta SP, component input.

Ok, let me repeat myself. I want to edit in Uncompressed SD 720 x 480. So i want to capture a format that matches that, so that FCP wont have to render or stretch or scale. I'm having a hard time getting the Kona to do what the LO does. I am not using a different codec. Everything matches except frame size.
Anyway, i haven't really gotten any farther than when I've started. I know I can use compressor, or squeeze or numerous hardware or software encoders to change my video to match my sequence, but that defeats the purpose. I might as well just let FCP convert it. I have quite a few hours of footage and want to eliminate any extra steps.

  • XML and encoding

I'm being considered for a video encoding position that I would very much like to get.
It is for a TV network. I've used Compressor, Sorenson Squeeze and MPEG Streamclip mostly. Do you know what I should be prepared to encounter at a major network?
Also, they mentioned using XML. How is XML used for encoding video?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

I guess this might not be a good place to post this since it doesn't relate to a specific Apple product. S, apologies if that's the case. I have gotten some good help here before, so I thought I'd try.

  • MPEG2 Encoder

What is the best MPEG2 Encoded available for the Mac? I'd be encoding at 1920*1080 and 1280*720.

Bit Vice, Compressor, Sorenson Squeeze, Cleaner are among the best. There's also iDVD, DVD-SP and Toast.

  • Exporting 22 minute HD project. Pointers Appreciated.

    Hey Forum people!
I am exporting a larger project from Final Cut Pro 7 and I am wondering if anyone out there has any pointers. I have figured out two options and they result in two different results. When I export using "Quicktime Movie..." my file is gigantic. Like 25gb gigantic. When I export using using "using Quicktime Conversion..." it's a lot smaller in size but quality is lost. It's not terrible but I notice a bit of pixelation. There will be multiple purposes for the file but right now I just want to be able to get it under 4gb without it loosing any quality.  I have searched for this on the web but nothing is coming up - only things for compressing for youtube and DVD's pop up and I'm looking to keep it HD.
    Thanks so much!

From FCP, the typical method would be to export using QuickTime Movie (not QuickTime Conversion), then use the resulting file in Compressor or other app.   The 'QuickTime Movie' will provide the same quality as your FCP Sequence.  After that, most people would use Compressor, Episode, Squeeze or other compression/conversion app to create a file that suits the purpose of its intended method of delivery since some delivery methods are restricted to specific codecs and bit rates..   For example, for DVD delivery, I'd use one of the DVD presets in Compressor, customized to my needs.  For server-based playback, I'd use a multiplexed MPEG-2 Program file setting, for web delivery, an H-264 setting, etc, etc.  So determine wha the medium will be and then you can properly choose which format/codec you should use.
Keep in mind that ANY form of compression will result in a loss of quality - that's just the nature of compression; some data has to be thrown away in order to make the file size smaller.  Some codecs do this fairly efficiently while other, older codecs may show more quality loss.

  • Synchronizing 2 simultainious videos

Our current project needs to simultaneously present two
videos and keep them synchronized. We are using ActionScript 3 and
we use one controller (play, pause, stop, hSlider). Our controller
is able to start, pause and stop the two videos just fine. They
start simultaneously, but as they are playing, the two videos fall
    out of sync.
There does not seem to be anything systematic about the loss
of sync. That is, sometimes video 1 gets ahead, other times video 2
gets ahead. This loss of sync can be anywhere from 1 frame of video
up to more than a full second of video.
Both videos are running at 15 FPS and have the same key
frames. (In fact, the loss of sync occurs even when we are running
the identical video in the two VideoDisplays.)
We will appreciate any suggestions about keeping these two
    videos synchronized while playing.

There is no practical way to synch two independent
    movieClips, let alone
two video clips. You are decompressing the files at runtime.
    The amount
of work that the computer has to do is directly proportional
    to the
amount of data that is in the files.
Using a third party compressor, like Squeeze, you can set a
    data rate
for the finished, compressed file. With a low enough data
    rate, you can
usually get reliable playback of at least one .swf video or
    .flv video
file. This is the same methodology that's used for
    compressing real
    video files like Quicktime.
When you add a second file to be played simultaneously, you
    are more
than doubling the amount of work to be done.
With judicious use of a third party compressor you may be
    able to get
acceptable playback on most computers, but there's no way to
    guarantee
    consistent results.
If there is no sound in these videos, you might be able to
    lock step
them by playing each frame by frame, but that may make the
    process worse.
One sure solution is to re-edit the two original files into
    one video
and then save that out as an .swf or .flv.
