My sister went to another city. She is setup for dial up here at home. The hotel has T1 lines only. What can she do to make the ethernet work?
She is not too computer savvy. What can I tell her? She is using Tiger.

  • Using the internet when out of town

what is the best way for me to access the internet on my macbook while I am out of town?

Hi from Canada - though I travel to Ireland and England frequently. [Sorry this has turned out to be so long, but I hope you find it useful]
Well a few more thoughts for you both:
    Airport Extreme Base Station:
This is used to create a wireless network - for us, probably at home, by connecting it with an Ethernet cable to the cable router you have installed already. Then the AirPort in your MacBook Pro will connect (wirelessly) to the base station and then on to the internet. It means you can use the internet anywhere at home.
So you dont need it for travelling! Your MacBook has all it needs to connect to the internet - either with an Ethernet cable (well, I guess you'd have to take one with you - it's a good idea to have one in your laptop case anyway) or wirelessly via AirPort.
UK Airports - well any airport really
Usually the system is that you can buy a wifi access card - in Dublin it's €5 for an hour. This is like a scratch card, you scratch to get a username and password. Then you switch on AirPort and select the network in the list that drops down. I guess in Scotland it might be BT.
I suspect that all providers are created equal - though some may be more equal than others. It's really all to do with how much they charge.
    In a café:
There are many cafés, hotel reception areas, bars etc that will have wifi (thought they may call it wireless) access. Generally they are one of two types:
Hotspot - as soon as you start your AirPort and open your browser it will connect to the webpage of the provider where you can use your credit card to buy time. Time will be available by the minute or by the hour or day or something like that.
Café etc owned - in this case, it will either be free (you ask them for the password to join the network when AirPort asks for it) or they will sell you the password and either have a card with it on or write it down for you.
Generally, there are no accounts to set up - you just pay your money and surf!
    MacBook battery:
Just one word of warning about this. AirPort seems to use up battery power very quickly, well relative to other uses of the computer. So it's a good idea to make sure you're fully charged and take along your power adaptor. In the UK it came with a reasonably long flex from the adaptor to a 3-pin plug for the wall socket. That plus the cable from the adaptor to the magsafe plug gives plenty of length to plug into any socket that may be somewhere near - if you don't have that extra length, see if your Applestore has one - or buy a second adaptor when you get to the UK.
And dont be afraid to plug in to any power socket you find yourself near either at the airport or in a café or hotel. Everyone does it and they're kind of used to it at this stage - the worst that can happen is that they ask you to unplug it!
I think that answers it all - let me know if you need anything else.
Have a great trip - it sounds wonderful.

  • Airport wont connect on my home network when its password protected but..

Airport wont connect to my home network when its password protected. It will connect to my network if i go into my linksys router and set the network to "not password protected". If i put on the security and choose a pass phrase it always says connection failed when i try to connect to the network. anyone got any suggestions on what to try ?
ps and yes i am putting in the password right

    Hi Nickerjones
When you enter your password for the Linksys router, is it generating a separate code phrase? By this, I mean if you enter "password", the Linksys converts this to a code that might look something like "ju457re76en7pq" for example. The code is generated based on an algorithm that Linksys uses for their products and should be visible in the set up page. Sorry, I haven't used Linksys for several years so I can't remember all the details.
Other manufacturers use different algorithms for their products, so if you entered "password" on an Apple product, it would likely convert the phrase to a different code, which the Linksys would not recognize. If you can locate the actual code that the Linksys generates when you enter your password and use that same exact code when you enter the password for your wireless on Airport, you may have your problem solved.

  • Photomerge produces white lines when using RAW (PEF) but not TIFF

I just started using PS CC (Mac, v14.1.2) and tried out Photomerge with a set of 40 (4 rows, 10 cols) raw images (Pentax PEF format), resulting in a 0.3 gigapixel image.
When I have them stitched by Photomerge, I see fine white lines at the merge points.
I had enabled all 3 options (blend images together, vignette removal, geometric distortion correction), using cylindrical layout.
When I first convert the PEFs to TIFFs and use Photomerge with the same options, there are no such white lines.
An example of the bad output:
These unwanted lines are, of course, at the edges where the images are getting joined.
Also, when using only a few images (2x2 or 3x3, or even 4x5), I do not get this effect.
I noticed that when using less images, the blend masks' edges are not straight - but they are when I see this issue. This suggests that at some point the merge operation gets overwhelmed and switches to a simpler algorithm, which in turn has this "bug" with RAW images, apparently.
Is this a known issue, and is there a way to get this working right with this many RAW/PEF images?

csuebele, that link only directs me to http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family, which is clearly not a bug report form but yet another "open" discussion forum, it seems.
Sigh. How can Adobe charge so much money for their products and not even afford a team of people to look into bugs that users might want to report. Big companies suck.
Although you were probably looking for a standard developer-type bug report form, you still might want to take a closer look at that site. You'll see numbers next to the topics; those are user votes to help get something fixed sooner. While it's one thing to submit a bug report (and from this thread it seems they might already have it), Adobe uses that site to help prioritize which bugs to fix first, based on the user discussion and votes. Because Adobe has to decide not only whether a bug needs to be fixed sooner than other bugs, but sooner or later than certain feature requests. The user discussions and user votes on that site help them decide, although I'm sure there are other internal considerations.
In addition to votes, you'll see that posts on that site can be marked "Acknowledged" or "In Progress" by Adobe. The user votes and status reports are what make that site a little more quantifiable than this forum. Also, it isn't unusual to see Adobe developers and employees in the threads looking for more info or explaining things. So while it might not look like a traditional bug database, it's along those lines but in a way that makes it a little easier for non-technical users to participate in the process.

  • HT4628 Why does internet connection on my Time Capsule cut out (on main but not guest network)?

Hi - I just got a time capsule 802.11n to use with my Macbook (OSX 10.6.8).
My wireless connectivity on my main (but not guest) network cuts out EVERY FRICKEN DAY multiple times.  The internet phone connection + guest network still work, so the internet connection is there -- something with the main network is going wrong.
When I reset the time capsule (remove plug and plug back in), it works fine again.
Can anyone recommend a solution so this connectivity problem stops?  Never had any issues with my Netgear wireless router, so at the moment, I'm really disappointed in this Apple product.  Hopefully there is a setting I can switch to fix this (or something else simple one of you smart people out there can recommend)
    Thanks,
    JLG

In any event, if your OS X version is 10.7.x, download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Lion:
    Lion: AirPort Utility 5.6.
If your OS X version is 10.5.x or 10.6.x, download and install AirPort Utility 5.5.3:
Leopard, Snow Leopard: AirPort Utility 5.5.3.
After you install the appropriate version of AirPort Utility, open it. The program will be located in your Utilities folder, which in turn is found in your Applications folder.
To open the Utilities folder, go to the Finder and select "Utilities" from the Go menu:
AirPort Utility 5.6 looks like this:
... but make sure you use the version of AirPort Utility you just downloaded.
Launch AirPort Utility and select your Time Capsule. Click Manual Setup, then the Guest Menu tab, then you can elect to disable the guest network, or to establish whatever security settings you want.
The window looks somewhat like this:
If your version of AirPort Utility does not look anything like that, you are probably not using the one you just downloaded. Find it and start over.
When you are finished configuring your Time Capsule, click Update and allow the Time Capsule to restart.

  • Problem sending mail when out of town.

So, I check in to the hotel w/ wifi and I receive mail but cannot send it. "Cannot send message using selected server" referring to my regular mail server. Gmail doesn't work nor does .mac even changing the port to 587.
Are there any magic numbers I need to configure to accomodate this or is it just too bad.
    Thank you

Do you have the authentication information filled in for the mail account? Open Mail preferences, click on Accounts icon in toolbar, click on Account Information tab. Click on the Server Settings button. Select Password authentication from the Authentication drop down menu. Fill in your email username and password.
Some mail servers will not permit you to use them for sending mail when logged into another ISP account without authentication. Also be sure you are using the proper server for the mail account you are accessing, especially if you have multiple accounts and mail servers configured.

  • N8: PR2.0 is out there..but where is my update for...

Hello may i know the latest version of N8? mine is PR1.1 version 013.016
    [product code=059D1F9]
why also delay our update, can it be punctual in the future...coz i not hoping my n8 will be the last Nokia i used...

Updates arent delayed due to Nokia's own desires. Updates are delayed due to carriers blocking updates as they want to customize it first, or regionalization/special releases which again further causes delay due to different software content. If you want to get updates early, get unbranded global units.
It doesnt matter if you're on Nokia or not. My friend's HTC for example, using Android, is still behind in terms of available updates for similar models.

  • How to maintain original lines when converting a word file in a PDF

Unfortunately the table lines often change when converting a word file in a PDF, e.g. dotted/broken lines into straight lines or different kinds of broken lines. How can I maintain the original lines when converting the documents?
Many thanks in advance for your advice.
    Li Li

    Hello,
    Ok, this is the background.
I’m a publisher. Any document to end user will go as pdf. And off course it preserves the word appearance. We ship our manuals only in pdf.  At this point my end users have to copy the “CODES” into his editor to run the product.  So when doing it, the “Codes” copied from pdf to his editor loses its format.  Editor need not be the actual one; you can also test in a notepad.
P.S: You can find the difference by copying the code from word to notepad and pdf to notepad
Hope you now understood the purpose what I’m looking at for.

  • SCAN/FAX when out of ink

How do I convince my all in one that I don't need colored ink to be able to FAX a black and white document (or any ink at all).
I only use this machine for black aned white copy/fax/scan/print which it is now refusing to do over an issue with the colored ink cartridge.  Does this render it a BOAT ANCHOR?????   I can understand a persistant warning when out of ink, but this thing refuses to do ANYTHING!!!!!!
    Larry

    Hi,
We have been talking about this few times: Printers should allow users to scan and fax with empty ink cartridges. Some printers allow this but many don't because they stop during warming up process. Your printer may fall into the second group.

  • Stop the test when out of records

    Hi,
Is it possible to stop the whole test-run when a script runs out of db-records?
Otherwise, it would be a good feature in future versions.
    Regards,
    Axel

If you use that "When out of records: stop the user" setting, then every user who requests a new record will stop, so the test will end gracefully as each user realizes it needs to stop at the end of it's iteration. This assumes you are requesting a new db record at the start of each iteration of the run section.
If your script is not configured to request a new record at the start of each iteration, then you will need to add some extra DB check in the script. How is your script configured to request new DB records? If you need some type of force abort of all virtual users, there are other possible options for coding into your script. Though to directly answer your question, there is no OATS Controller setting which specifically stops the entire test when the databank runs out of records.

One to One can be purchased with your computer if you buy directly from Apple. The cost for one year is $99 renewable twice. Genius Bar appointments are scheduled at no cost to you. Genius Bar appointments are not as lengthy as the personal training appointments. Genius Bar is usually for diagnosis of a hardware failure or software issue. GB is not usually a tutorial session.
