Contacts erased on sync

on iPhone 4: when I add a new contact onto the iPhone, and then attempt to sync to iTunes, the newly created contact does not move to my computer's address book. Then, when I sync one more time, the contacts on the phone are set to match address book - which erases the newly created iPhone contact. I've been to the Genius bar and they said this is not something they have heard of before. I would appreciate advice on this.
Best,
John Amoratis

iPhone 4:
I'm actually having a similar problem. I've synced my phone before with no problems, but earlier this week it didn't sync properly.
1) it deleted a contact on my phone
2) the new contacts I added on my phone were not added to my address book on my laptop
3) I added new info to someone's contact info on my lap top and instead of updating it on my phone, it made a duplicate contact for the same person.
If I updated a contact on one device, it used to ask me during the sync which contact/device was more up to date and then override it. but now, it doesn't ask me that.
I'd appreciate some help too, thanks!

  • Contacts erased & cannot sync with VZW Backup Asst

Woke up this morning to find that ALL of my contacts were gone!!!!!!!  One good thing though is that my texts are still in phone.  What a thing to find; especially since I use it for business and have over 400 contacts.  Well after the initial shock I remembered that my Droid Charge automatically updates each day.  Well I went to VZW backup assist and to my comfort found all of my contacts backed up.
WELL, now the problem I have is that I cannot get the backup assist to sync to my phone.  The website says that it has synced but no contacts have shown up in my phone.  My phone keeps telling me "communication errors, no network coverage" and therefore nothing comes through.
Now thinking about it, over the past several days my backup sync's have failed.  What am I to do?  Do I go to a VZW store tomorrow to have them help me or do I keep trying - even though I have been at this now for at least 4 - 5 hours?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try this.  On the home screen Touch Contacts>press the MENU button>touch more>touch display options and then under Choose contacts to display open Phone, SIM, and Google and give everything a red check mark.
Now see if all your contacts are displayed when you touch the red contacts icon in the home screen.

  • Would erase and sync delete all my contacts, apps, messages and photo?

Can someone please help me!!! Thanks!
I formatted my laptop and now i downloaded this new iTunes. I am using a Sony laptop.
I just want to add new songs into my iPhone. I selected the song list i wanted from itunes, and the clicked "sync music". Here comes the erase and sync option.

On your PC just log on to the iTunes account you originally used to purchase the apps and re-download them. You do not have to pay again but you may get a receipt that says $0.00.

  • Keeping Contacts & Apps when syncing iPhone with new computer

I just got a new netbook with Windows 7 Starter. I would like to transition from using my current work laptop to the netbook as the manager of my iPhone. When I try to sync my iPhone with the new computer it says that my iPhone's library is linked to another computer. It appears that all of my contacts and apps will be erased if I sync these items on the netbook.
Does anyone know a way that I can keep this information without erasing? I already erased my music content from the iPhone. I foresee a real problem since this netbook doesn't have Outlook and all my contact information is in that format. I also don't want to have my apps all wiped out. Thanks for the help.

iTunes content can be synced or manually managed with an iTunes library on a single computer, and photos can be transferred to the iPhone via the iTunes sync process from a single computer only. When transferring iTunes content and photos from another computer, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from your iPhone first.
No other content is touched or erased when doing so including iPhone contacts especially if you don't select to sync contacts with a supported application on a new computer.
iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased/downloaded from the iTunes store only. With your iPhone connected and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone. If you haven't activated the new computer with your iTunes account with iTunes, you should do so before doing this.
With Windows, contacts can be synced with Outlook 2003 or 2007 along with calendar events, or with Windows Contacts for syncing contacts only.
If you don't have Outlook 2003 or 2007 available on the new computer, you will have Windows Contacts available. Before syncing contacts with Windows Contacts, enter one contact in Windows Contacts. Make the contact up if needed, which can be deleted later. This will provide a merge prompt with the first sync with Windows Contacts, which you want to select.
There is no Outlook format or Apple address book format with contacts. You can sync contacts with Outlook 2003 or 2007 or with Windows Contacts on a PC, and sync contacts with Apple's address book on a Mac.
Contact, calendar events, and Safari bookmarks can be synced with the supported applications on multiple computers. With two Windows computers, with two Macs, or with a Windows computer and a Mac.

  • Contacts no longer syncing with iPhone

I am using an iphone and syncing with my macbook laptop with OS 10.6.2. I have it set up to automatically sync my contacts, calendar, notes, and bookmarks when i connect it to the laptop. I have itunes set to manually sync music.
About a week ago, my contacts stopped syncing up. I have not changed any of the settings. Now, if i edit or add a contact to my macbook, it does not show up on my iPhone, and the same thing vice versa. All of the other functions (calendar, notes, etc) are syncing just fine. I tried changing the settings in itunes to not sync the contacts in address book and then changing it back, but no help.
When i plug in the iphone it appears to sync normally but contacts don't sync.
This is driving me crazy. Any help much appreciated.

Can you restore the phone without erasing all the contacts? If so i will do it but I have stuff on there that is not nacked up, ie contacts.

  • Every time i plug my iphone into computer it wants to erase and sync

iphone was originally linked to my laptop... however i never transferred anything from the laptop to the iphone.  i now want to use my desktop to transfer music.  so i plug in the iphone, click the checkmark next to sync music. it says that the iphone is currently synced to another library and do i want to erase and sync?  so i erase and sync and pick the music i want and transfer it to my phone.  I unplug the phone, plug it back in again. in itunes it shows the music sync as unchecked... so i click the box to sync music and it says its associated with another library and it needs to erase and sync.
i have done this 4 times now. and everytime it wants me to erase and sync even though i just did it on the same computer with the same i phone 3 times in a row.  i don't get it, why won't itunes/iphone sync with the new itunes library on my desktop??? what can i do to fix this issue?
i'm using newest itunes 11 on windows 8.1 computer.  the computer has not been authorized... does this make a difference as to why the sync won't stick?
BTW i also hate how apple makes you sync your phone, android is so much easier to just plug the phone in and transfer your music/videos manually.  never have a problem doing that.  Only when apple tries to make it so easy it gets way more complicated than it needs to be!

    Hi joy145,
If you are having issues syncing and would like to manually manage your content, you may find the following article helpful:
Apple Support: Managing content manually on iPhone, iPad, and iPod
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1535
If you are still having issues or continually prompted to erase and sync, you may want to try restoring your iPhone to factory settings before moving your data over (either via syncing or manually):
Apple Support: Use iTunes to restore your iOS device to factory settings
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1414
(Note: Restoring iOS software deletes all your data and content from your device, including songs, videos, contacts, photos, and calendar info.)

  • Unable to manually manage music and videos on iPhone 4 without erase and sync, same computer!

Ok, so I know you all have heard this before but I do believe my case is rather unique, and quite frustrating.
I purchased an iPhone 4 and synced it to the same computer I am using now - created the playlist and used it to sync with phone. Worked great for awhile; but one day I contracted some nasty malware and had to wipe my computer and reinstall my OS (Windows 7). Albeit my music library was on my external HDD which survived the onslaught. I obviously had to reinstall iTunes afterwards. The playlist was gone on reinstall.
Afterwards I still didn't see an issue with my iPhone and iTunes: When I plug it in it syncs, everything seems to be working accordingly.
But I recently transferred some new music from a CD to my iTunes and wanted to throw those songs on my iPhone, the drag and drop method I was so very used to did not work and I noticed that "manually manage music and videos" was uncheck under my devices summary.
When I attempt to check this option in iTunes it gives me a popup notification telling me I need to erase and sync in order to use this option because my 'iPhone is synced with another library". Again, I DID have to reinstall iTunes after reinstalling my OS.
I have tried all the tricks that google could supply me with with no avail; authorizing, stopping the sync from automatically starting.... yada yada - none of these cookie cutter methods have worked for me.
    Here's a too long didn't read:
    >iPhone 4 was working fine - used playlist to sync with.
    >Had to reinstall OS (Windows 7) Playlist gone.
    >Reinstall iTunes.
    >iPhone still syncs with library, no error messages on connect.
    >Unable to manually manage music and videos without erase and sync.
    >None of the usual methods work.

Hmm, I will say after posting this and looking at the related threads it seems I can only either use manually manage or sync.
I was using sync before but since the playlist disappeared I was syncing with I simply want to add music to my phone without deleting everything. Is this possible?
If I use "manually manage music and videos" will it delete everything or just the music and videos? It doesn't specify...
Could I just create a new playlist and sync it with that? If so how?
The bottom line is it isn't that big of a deal if I need to simply rebuild my iPhone music library but losing my configuration, contacts etc is not an option. Optimally I would just like to be able to add my new music to my iPhone without having to rebuild my library.

  • Erase and sync issues (backup/restore)

    Hello.
I have an issue with the backup/restore with my iPhone.
Sometimes, it is difficult to find an answer that fits your problem exactly on the forum!  Lots of good stuff though!
This post will be little longer than normal, but I need to get all the facts on the table.
I'll try to keep this brief.  Please hear me out!
    From another post ...
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/12273122
    Kwopau stated ...
if you do a restore, you only have 2 options, Restore as new, meaning nothing will go on it
and you will just have to start fresh and no contacts will go in there.
The other option is "Restore from Back up _______" it will completely restore your phone
from your last back up and everything will be on there.
    End of quote ...
    Here is my situation.
    I have a 3g 16GB iPhone.
I am still running IOS 3 (not IOS 4).
I do not use sync.  I  manually manage the music and books with iTunes.
    I have an HP laptop.
A while ago, I had to completely rebuild the computer.
The computer has a new computer and user name (I don't know if this matters in iTune/iPhone matchup)?
I have not been able to connect the iPhone since then.
    Let me rephrase that.
I can connect with iTunes.  I can see all that is on the iPhone.
When I try to add or delete music or books on the iPhone with iTunes or set the manually manage check box, I get the following message ...
The iPhone "myname's iPhone" is synced with another iTunes library.
Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with the this iTunes library.
Most commands appear to be grayed  out,  I can't add or delete anything.
I do not have anything in current  iTunes library at the moment.
    My fear is this.
If I do the erase and sync as suggested  (iPhone message above) to the iPhone and then use the new iTunes library,  will I be able to use the backup (I just created) to restore to the iPhone that I just reset?
If so, will it have contacts and all the other stuff?
I can afford to lose the music and books, and perhaps the apps on the iPhone.
I cannot afford to lose my contact list.
I need to find another way to backup the contact list, Outlook, etc?
If there other posts relative to this, please point me to them.
I am afraid to pull the trigger for fear that iTunes will not recognize the iPhone after the erase and sync and then not allow me to restore.
Perhaps someone can put my mind at ease and convince me that it will all be good if I proceed!
Thanks for you time and help in this matter ...
    Bob

Do you know how to transfer purchases? Connect the iPad to the PC and launch iTunes. Click on the iPad nema on the left side of the iTunes window to select it. Then go to File>Transfer Purchases. That should put all of your purchased iPad content into the iTunes library on the PC.
Here are instructions in a very short, easy to follow article.
Transfer iTunes Library to a new computer
This discussion will be helpful to show you how to make the PC work wTunes from the iPad.

What puzzles me is that if you had updated with the PC, I would have thought that you would have backed up and synced with that PC as well, but read the articles and instructions and post back with questions.
You can email the pdf files to the iPad, or use iOS file sharing, and open and save them in iBooks or another pdf reader app, but start with getting your stuff onto the PC.

  • Centro Calendar and Contacts do not sync

I have had a problem syncing my contacts an calendar entries for several weeks. I use a Palm Centro.  I have tested with both Desktop and Outlook 2003.  Both have the same symptoms.  I am intrigued by other users problems that have been resolved by removing an Exchange account in Versamail.  While I do not have an Exchange account that I can determine and only have one account in versamail, I'd like to eliminate any possible Versamail conflict.  Is it possible to totally disable or delete versamail to test for a versamail conflict?   I assume I can always reset up Versamail.
More info:  I have the same problem with both Palm Desktop and Outlook 2003.  Contacts and Calender entries do not sync.  Tasks and memos sync just fine.  After scanning the many postings on this site many centro users have the same problem.  I received a replacement Centro in December and calendar and contacts have not sync'd since then.  It sounds like I have a different version of hotsync on the new centro that does not work the same.  Is that possible?  I have Hotsync 5.4.0 on my Centro and Hotsync 7.0.2 on my desktop running XP professional.
During hotsync and in the log file there is no evidence that hotsync is attempting to sync calendar and contacts.  I receive no errors in the log file.  Calendar and contacts are both checked on the desktop version of hotsync with the option to synchronize the files.  On the Centro under conduit setup calendar and contacts are both checked.

Don_Marsh(Wed Jan 14 09:44:06 EST 2009)>yes i have them. But it worked when i did a hard reset with verizon. We need to create an entry in my centro and perform a second hotsync. that is when it fails
Michael(Wed Jan 14 06:44:38 EST 2009)>Please create a new entry in outlook in calender and then perform Hotsync.
    Don_Marsh(Wed Jan 14 09:44:44 EST 2009)>ok
Michael(Wed Jan 14 06:45:01 EST 2009)>Before that perform soft reset and then perform Hotsync.

Don_Marsh(Wed Jan 14 09:48:26 EST 2009)>do i need to do soft reset before each hotsync
    Don_Marsh(Wed Jan 14 09:48:43 EST 2009)>it worked
    Michael(Wed Jan 14 06:48:55 EST 2009)>Awesome!!
    Don_Marsh(Wed Jan 14 09:49:10 EST 2009)>do i need to do a soft reset everytime
Michael(Wed Jan 14 06:49:35 EST 2009)>Well that is not needed but if it is not synching then perform Hotsync.
Michael(Wed Jan 14 06:51:00 EST 2009)>Is the HotSync successfully completed with transfer of data?
Michael(Wed Jan 14 06:51:08 EST 2009)>Please ignore that error message.
Don_Marsh(Wed Jan 14 09:52:06 EST 2009)>Yes the hot sync synced the second new entry into outlook
    Don_Marsh(Wed Jan 14 09:52:24 EST 2009)>So i don't care about the protocol error
Michael(Wed Jan 14 06:52:43 EST 2009)>Yes it will just gives that error message.
    Michael(Wed Jan 14 06:52:46 EST 2009)>Please ignore it.
Don_Marsh(Wed Jan 14 09:53:02 EST 2009)>can i go back to my original user id?
Michael(Wed Jan 14 06:54:08 EST 2009)>Well I would suggest you to continue with the current user ID because the old user ID is not supporting the calender, contact conduits to sync.
    Don_Marsh(Wed Jan 14 09:54:30 EST 2009)>ok. Thank you

  • HT1202 If I Erase and Sync my iPhone to my new library will I lose old data?

If I erase and sync my iphone to my new itunes library on my new computer will it erase my photos, videos and contacts too?

It will erase your contacts if you choose to sync contacts on the Info tab of your iTunes sync settings and sync to an empty contacts client.  To avoid this you must enter at least one contact in Address Book, Outlook or whatever you're syncing contacts with prior to syncing.  This will generate a merge or replace prompt for contacts when you first sync, choose merge.
Syncing doesn't touch your photos and videos in your camera roll (other than to include them in the iPhone backup).  It will, however, remove any non-camera roll photos or videos synced to your phone from your computer.

OK, I've searched this site and found a lot of opinions, it seems, but I'm looking for a definitive answer, please.
My girlfriend has an iPhone that was once registered to her ex-husband's computer/iTunes.  She still has the iPhone, but she has a new computer.
She has NEVER synched the iPhone to this new computer and she has absolutely no music on the iPhone - just Contacts & Apps.
We connected the iPhone to her Mac the other day and it did a full backup when we chose to "sync".
Then, when we went to add Music on her computer to be synced to the iPhone, this message popped up (which we cancelled):
The iPhone 'My iPhone' is synced with another iTunes library.  Do you want to erase this iPhone and sync with this iTunes library?
An iPhone can be synced with only one iTunes library at a time.
Erasing and syncing replaces the contents of this iPhone with the contents of this iTunes library.
Now, again, this ONLY comes up when we try to set up syncing Music to this iPhone.  That is the only change we're trying to Apply at this time.
So, will only all the music once (actually never) stored on the iPhone be erased and replaced?
Or, will other things get caught up in the "erase" action of this process?
And, if other things -- what "other" things, specifically??  Apps??

You seem to have issues understanding what I said. I didn't ask for help because clearly, no one on here has the answers I need. You seem to be wanting to kick me out because YOU thought you were all knowing and I stepped in to let you know you are not? I am not thread jacking. This post came up when I was looking up how to do the solution I said. I was reading through and saw your post. I am just notifying you so that you can know a little more and be less of a jerk when you are helping people out. You can't say "you didn't just update your iTunes because that doesn't happen when you update iTunes" because it happened to me JUST updating iTunes and you can't say "there's no way around it." I have downloaded itunes in new computers without having to resync my iPhone so there IS a way around it (on a pc, idk about a mac. On a pc you can make itunes think you have synce that phone before.) Just because you don't know, doesn't mean those things don't happen or aren't possible. You are NOT all knowing. Don't bash me because I said you were wrong. How about you say "leave this thread and come back when you come with a solution." See? That's a jerk-y response but would've gotten me to leave.

  • Question Concerning Erase and Sync and Itunes backups

Earlier this year my Computers Harddrive exploded without me making a backup.  overtime I have moved all my new data to a new Itunes library and now after just about everything has been moved My Itunes is telling me that for my 5 devices, That I need to do an Erase and Sync.  If I were to first backup my devices in Itunes would I be able to recover everything after the Erase and Sync ( Notes, Contacts, Remiders, ect.) Also a side question,  If I restore my phone from a backup, are the data in the Apps Lost
Sorry For Poor Grammar did this in a hurry

If the songs are still on your computer then you'll have to add them back into iTunes and rebuild your library. Once you've done that you can reload your iPod. Pressing "Erase and Sync" when iTunes brings up the dialogue window asking whether you want to replace the songs on your iPod with the songs in this iTunes does exactly what it says. If you linked to an iTunes with only a few or completely different songs it will have erased your original iPod song list, iTunes itself must have been empty at that point as erase and sync erases the iPod not iTunes. If you lost your songs entirely from the computer and the iPod there are some data recovery programs on the market. I've no personal experience of them so I can't say how effective they are, here's an example: iPod Data RecoveryBuegie - Recovering Songs
None of the recovery programs are particularly cheap so you have to decide if in your particular circumstances it's worth it to get your songs back. It may be if you have a lot of purchased tracks which you would have to pay to download again. If they came primarily from your CDs then it's most likely not as you can re-rip them.

  • HT1296 Erase and sync help!

i want to start syncing my iphone to my laptop instead, if i go 'erase and sync' will that erase all iphone content like messages and contacts and so on? and if i do press erase and sync can i restore from backup afterwards

    Hello, Welcome to discussions.
    Couple quick tips
    -Reboot computer
-Ensure when you connect the iPhone that you connect to a USB 2.0 Port if at all possible. Some of these ports will be located on the back of a desktop machine, othertimes in the front.
-If you are connecting the iPhone via a USB connection built into a keyboard or USB hub. Try using any other port on the computer and or disconnect any un-needed USB devices at the time of sync.
-Make sure you have downloaded and installed latest version of iTunes
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
-Make sure you are using the iPhone USB Cable. If you are using one from another manufacture see if you can use the original iPhone USB cable or borrow another iPhone cable to ensure your cable properly works.
    -Uninstall Apple Software and Reinstall

  • Help with erasing and syncing please - what will be erased?

I have somehow created a 2nd itunes account and my iphone won't sync with the first one. It is syncing with the 2nd one however I cannot add new music - if I try on the 2nd one I get a message asking if I want to erase this iphone and sync with this itunes library.  Below this is a warning that erasing and syncing will replace the contenst of this iphone with the contents of this itunes library.  What exactly will be erased?  If it's just the music and photos then I won't mind - my phone is new and not got much on it.  However I don't want to lose all my apps and contacts information.  I know I can back it all up but I am not very knowledgable about all this - I am new to itunes and iphones just last month!  Any advice gratefully recieved - thank-you!

OK so its been a LONG time since messing with this but now I have to get it done. I have tried all this that is stated in this thread and I can do what I am looking for IF I start a new file, draw a few shapes, apply the pathfinder divide.
However, with this file I am working with I can not figure out why I cant get it to work.
Again, what i am trying to do is have a LOT of lines crossing over the edges of the templates that are the shapes in my AI file. Think 80's style Eddie Van Halen guitar. They're going to be graphic for my sons motorcycle for his birthday.
I was trying to simply use the rectangle tool to draw various black and white lines and then somehow cut the overhangs off my templates.
Very frustrating that I cant figure out what I am doing wrong!! Especially since I am fairly proficient in After Effects, Premiere, and Photoshop. Trying to learn Illustrator though!!
    By the way using CS3
Thanks for anyone that can help me!!!

My Laptop was stolen. On the Itunes, I had many songs saved from other sources, that are currently on my Itouch. Itunes wants me to Erase to sync, and I dont want to erase. I have no access to those songs anymore. Is there a way to sync my Touch with my New laptop withoit erasing my I touch?

Syncing to a new iTunes library or computer will erase your iPod. Only if you back up your iPod manually before syncing, you can restore your device from that backup again. A manual backup does not include the sync process.
    Do this:
Disable autosync in iTunes, connect your iPod to your new computer and right click on it in the device list and choose backup. iTunes will backup your ipod without syncing.
Transfer your purchases the same way, choosing "transfer purchases" this time.
When you connect your device for the first time, all media content will be erased. But you can restore your settings and app data from your manual backup afterwards.
Don't forget to set up at least one contact and event on your new computer to be able to merge calendars and contacts when you sync the iPod for the first time.
Music is one way only, from the computer to your device, unless you bought the songs in itunes and transferred your purchases.
There is 3rd party software out there, but not supported by Apple, see this thread:http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2013615&tstart=0
