Converting Quark Files to InDesign CS3

Currently have had problems converting a Quark 5.0 file into ID CS3 Windows platform. It is my understanding that ID CS3 only accepts Quark 4.1 and under...is there anyway around this? The person with the Quark 5.0 file is not able to 'Save As' a 4.1 or lower version; the software doesn't allow it. Any suggestions?
Thanks!

Email it to me and I'll convert it for you. If you get a lot of these,
you might want to invest in Q2ID from Markzware.

What is the best software/plugin for converting Quark files to Indesign?
I don't want to upgrade to the latest Quark now i've got CC so going to make the leap to indesign only. Does Indesign auto convert or do I need anything else?

ID does not load QXD files. There is a respective commercial third-party plug-in to that effect, but it's rather pricey and I'm not up to speed which versions of Quark and ID it supports and which features come over. Inquire in the ID forum.

  • Why can't I open a Quark Express file in InDesign CS3?

    Hello there,
I have a client's magazine in Quark Express (PC format) and I need to recreate it as an InDesign file (Mac format) for laying out future publications. I have tried several times to open it in InDesign as I have read that this is possible. I don't even get an error or warning message. It simply doesn't open at all. It tells me that the file type is not recognised.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get this to open? Perhaps it is a PC/ Mac conflict? I have even added an InDesign file suffix to the end of the Quark file but that also failed.
Thanks in advance for any help or advice.

Just to add to Eugene's recommendation. Q2ID is worth every last dime of the $200 it cost.
I just upgraded to the latest version when I received 25 Quark files to convert for an iPad app. Even for early Quark files that InDesign can open, it does a better job.
BTW, it's also worth noting here that Adobe cannot legally have InDesign open anything later than Quark 4.x files due to the encryption used in Quark 5 and later files. Quark is too dependent on Markzware for XTensions to go after them.

  • Converting files to InDesign CS3 from Illustrator

We have lot of files needs to be converted from Illustrator to InDesign CS3.
How can it be done? We have tried but it is coming as an image & can not modify anything.

Yeah, you're right as usual, Peter, but what if there isn't any vector artwork in the Illustrator file? You'd be aghast at the number of fill-in-the-blank forms I've converted from Illy to ID; files that needed the typographical control of ID, but didn't need any real vector content. You know, where the blanks should have been done with tab leaders, and instead are a forest of underscores, really short text boxes with "rich black" stroke, text boxes with fill but no stroke, et cetera. Forms where the only "artwork" is a 72 ppi raster logo pasted from a Word file. I could go on for hours in this vein.
You might be assuming that the OP's Illustrator files were made by a competent, non-crazy designer, and that they are mostly vector content and therefore should have been made in Illy in the first place. Over here in nonprofit-land, I can't afford to make such assumptions. So, I'm not going to assume that there's any vector content at all in Masud's files. Maybe there is, maybe there isn't. How can I judge, from the ~20 words that he's posted on the topic? I mean, maybe jongware is absolutely right in assuming that the OP is trying to make ID the do-it-all app, but we have no way to know.
Speaking of which: Hey, Masud, you had best post some details about your project (like the details that Bob requested, for example), unless you want this thread to die.

  • Import Quark 6 files into InDesign CS3?

I'm looking to import my old QuarkExpress 6 files into Indesign CS3. I saw that there is a plug in for about $199 that would allow Indesign to import these files. Is that the only way, or is there a cheaper way to make this happen?
    Thanks for any input.

This is not a design question. Please ask in the ID forum.

  • A book file in InDesign CS3 (.indb) - Mac and PC - crashing issue

Several months ago, I posted that when I indexed a 300-page book with lots of chapter, generating the index crashed InDesign. This happened initially on a PC running Windows XP home. When I took the book to a Macintosh, it happened also.
One thing I had done, and I don't know if this makes a difference, is changed words that already had index tags attached to them.
It has been several months since I've tried this - I've been waiting until this book was completely written before trying again.
Since this happened, I've also tried to synchronize styles and that also crashed InDesign. Before the index 'broke', both generating the index and synchronizing styles worked like perfectly - amazing functions of InDesign and makes working with a book much easier.
Now the book is ready. I stripped all of the index codes from the entire book using search and replace, and then the first time I tried to open the Index window, it crashed again.
When it recovered, there was a message that 5 of my 24 documents in this book may be damaged.
So I tried opening the indb file, opening the Indexing window, THEN opening the book files and it crashed. I was able to get the error message this time: An exception unkown software exception (0xc000000d) ocurred in the application at location 0x78138aa0. Click OK to terminate the program.
When InDesign came back up, I closed the Index window and was able to open all of the book's files with no problem.
    My questions are:
1 - Is there any way to find out where/how those files are damaged?
2 - Does anyone know what may cause an Index generation or style synchronization to crash InDesign - and then not fix the problem?
3 - Could this be something other than the index, and how do I figure out what it might be?
This book is now 374 pages in 24 documents, and I don't think there is a way to go backwards in the InDesign process at this point.
I'm not sure how clear I'm being with all of this, but the book is to go to the printer Monday and I can't index it.
I'd appreciate any help I can get.
    Thanks so much,
    Marcy

  • Cannot load QXD file into Indesign CS3

    Hi,
I'm trying to open up a Quark QXD file in Indesign CS3.  It find finds the file as a readable file, but when trying to open I get the error message that it cannot open the file - Adobe Indesign may not support the file format, a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing, or the file may be open in another application.
Adobe support lists this as an importable file, and tells me where the plug-in is stored - I've checked and do have it (I can find it in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS3\Plug-Ins\Filters\Sangam Readers) Reader for QuarkXpress.smrd.  The QXD file is not in use anywhere else.
Is it possible to check if this plug-in is actually loaded and if it's not, how do I install it?  Has anybody else had this problem?
    Any help gratefully received!!!

InDesign cannot directly open Quark files later than version 4 due to encryption. If your files are from a later version you can use the Q2ID plugin from Markzware.

  • Converting Publisher files to InDesign

I'm currently searching for a cost efficient and reliable way to convert Publisher files to InDesign. Any suggestions for converting these files would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Illustrator is not a multipurpose PDF editor. In any way, shape or form.
It would be better to use Acrobat.
Save the file as a RTF - delete all the imagery from the RTF in Word
Extract all the Images/Diagrams/Graphics from the PDF using the Edit Object command.
Raster images will open in Photoshop and Vector in Illustrator (can be setup up through Acrobat preferences)
    Reassemble the layout in InDesign.
But whatever you do *Don't open the PDF in Illustrator. And don't start copying and pasting from Illustrator to InDesign*
Do it right - or else face headaches down the road later on.

  • Opening Pagemaker 5 files in InDesign CS3

Can anybody help me with opening old Pagemaker 5 files in InDesign CS3 or creating PDF from this files?

Download the PM 7 demo and use that to save as PMD. Open that in InDesign.

  • How to import an Quarkxpress 5 file into Indesign CS3

    Hello,
I am in trouble when  trying to open with Indesign CS3 for windows a file created with Quarkxpress 5 for Mac. Do you have any hint? (file attached)
    thanks for support

The Q2ID plugin is really nice as Bob suggested. If you go through there website they will convert your one document and post it for you to download, email you with the results and a discount code. Well worth the money and a very nice company to work with. I can't say enough nice things about their products.
If you have a newer version of Quark licensed I prefer use their Markztools plugin for Quark to backsave to 4. Seems to be a better conversion with InDesign's Quark import, though that could just be my impression.

  • Can I convert Quark 7 to Indesign without plugin Q2ID?

I need one Quark file (Quark 7) converted to Indesign CS3, is there a way that I can do this without the Plugin Q2ID? Thanks for your help.

    Kathlene,
My post wast't directed specifically at you as much as meant to be a clarification of the rules. Someone (perhaps you) said they knew people who used the software to convert files for other users. I just wanted to make sure future readers would understand the difference between using Q2ID as part of the normal get-a-file/convert/work-with-file/return-new-file-to-client workflow and offering an I'll-convert-your-files-for-you-so-you-don't-have-to-buy-a-copy service.

  • Quark files to InDesign

I have InDesign CS2. Can I open an old quark file? I thought I read somewhere that I can. do I need CS3?

To open QuarkXPress 5, 6 or 7, you need to purchase Q2ID from Markzware, which is an InDesign plug-in:

  • Converting Quark files

I'm switching from Quark 6.5 to InDesign. To convert an existing 6.5 file, I'm told to first save it back to 4.0 BUT Quark will only let me save back to 5.0. How can I open the file in InDesign without having to purchase Marksware? Thanks.
    Joel A

If you have a full library of files, then the money spent on the
Markzware plugin will pay for itself over and over again.
If you only have one file, you can send it to me and I'll convert it for
you. Click on my name, go to my website for contact info.

  • Opening a MAC generated file of Indesign CS3 with a PC

I have a MAC generated .indd file (CS3) and cannot open it with my PC version of Indesign CS3. When I try to open the documennt the content manager pops up and says "Cannot open "file name" file" It gives a suggestion of updating to a newer version of Indesign, checking for updates, or updating plugins. Is there any way to open a MAC generated indd file on a PC? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

    Hi Bob,
I actually have it in CS 2, 3, and 4, but all of those versions are created
on a MAC. I can have it created in any version, but I only have version
3.0.1 on my PC, which is the only computer I have Indesign on. I have also
tried opening it in an INX file, without any success.. Any suggestions?

  • Opening CS2 files in InDesign CS3 - crashing

    Hi,
I'm just wondering if anyone knows why InDesign CS2 files might crash InDesign CS3 when you try to open them (on Mac OS10.4.11)? The files still crash CS3 even when all the elements have been deleted from the file - all the text, pics, swatches, para and char styles, layers. If the file is saved as and then try to open it in CS3 it still crashes InDesign.
Very much hoping someone might be able to shed some light....
    Thanks very much,
    Susannah

    Might InDesign CS2 have been using a third-party plug-in?
