Creating 2 separate networks

Is there a way to create a separate internet networks at my house?  I want one with internet access just for kids. I want a second network with unrestricted access for grown ups. I plan to use Open DNS to filter restrict the kids network.
I have DSL, the most recent Airport Express and and previous generation Time Capsule.
Thanks!
Bryan

You can use the method Tesserax outlined.. but if you wanted to do it automatically rather than setting DNS via the device.. you can use one airport for secondary network.
I am not sure how you are doing the DSL - Airport setup.. whichever it is where the DSL modem is also a router or the airport is a router and using PPPoE client for wan.. the idea is to setup the second airport to statically handle a group of IP addresses from the first.
It is hard to explain without specifics.. so lets say the DSL modem is the router. It has a home IP of 192.168.2.254
Set the main router IP range to something less than the whole range..
Let me use my actual setup.
I set the DHCP range to leave some addresses for the Airport to control.
That leaves me a few IP addresses down low for devices that I might want to use directly on the main router, eg printers. (So IP 192.168.2.1-9)
And leaves me the range, 192.168.2.201-253 for the secondary airport.. remembering the main router is 254.
You will have one Airport (Express or TC in bridge) and one airport plugged by ethernet into the LAN of the first Airport or the DSL router.
Then I can set this second Airport to use static IP. So I choose the next address from the main router.
use whatever DNS you like for this one.. as this is unprotected. (or visa versa.. you pick). The DNS here will be used by the clients of this airport.
Set Network to DHCP only.. and set a suitable range for your clients.
I have the lease time set very short 1hr in both the main router and the TC. I think it helps to keep things updated.
Then setup wireless to create a wireless network. Use different wireless names protected network and unprotected.
Only give the kids the protected network password.
Setup your clients on the unprotected .. wireless or ethernet direct to the airport will make no difference.
Then you can check.. The wifi is getting the IP and DNS info from the TC (in my case this is the secondary airport).
As you can see wireless is getting 192.168.2.209
which means it is correctly getting IP from secondary router.. from the first it would be up to 200.
This setup is not routing.. if I do a traceroute to say google I do not have double NAT.
The secondary airport is acting as a secondary DNS server to clients that join it. Otherwise all the values are the same as the main router.
It makes no difference if the main router is the first airport.. the setup principle is the same and works really well.
So this setup might work for you and stop the problem.

  • Should I create a separate network for iOS devices?

My family and I are leaving the Windows platform and going Mac/Apple.  Here's what we have:
3 iPhones, 2 iPads, new iMac (coming from Santa for the kids), new MacBook Pro 15.4 with retina, Roku 3, and possibly thinking of trying Apple TV (to compare to the Roku).
I have wireless internet through ATT U-verse and their 2Wire router.  I am getting the Airport Time Capsule 2TB today.  My question is...should I setup the airport time capsule as a separate wifi network for all my iOS devices, or should I just extend the current 2WIRE ATT U-verse wireless network?  I think the easiest thing to do would be setup the Airport TC in bridge mode to extend the network.  But I recall reading a blog post where someone set up a separate network on the Airport TC for all his apple products.  This sounded like a great idea because from what I understand, the iOS devices can take advantage of the Airport TC offering a better speed.  Of course, I can't find the article anywhere (Murphy's Law).  My thought is to keep my work laptop (windows) and the Roku 3 on the 2Wire network and the iOS devices on a separate network.
I'm new to apple products (except the phone haha) so what does the community recommend?
    Thanks in advance,
    AC

Would the best solution be to extend my current by network running a cable from the LAN port of the uverse router to the WAN port of the airport time capsule?  This would create another wireless AP, correct?  I simply do what you said...use the same wireless name (SSID), security protocol, and password of the uverse router on the airport time capsule and I'm all set.  But I think the airport utility has an option to "Add to an existing network."  Is this the setup I should choose?  I believe you have reference this kb article in another discussion post.  Thanks again for your help.
This is the way I would do it.. but there is no right and wrong here.. just options with different uses..
    The cable backbone is ideal.
You are creating another AP.. yes.. and that is why it works.. extend by wireless is slow. You are using wireless in one hop connections.
Everything else is running over fast ethernet or gigabit hopefully.
I am not sure if the add to existing network will work correctly.. if you have the TC plugged in by ethernet it should.. but manual setup of this is trivial.
Bridge the TC as per my previous post.. setup wireless exactly as normal but use same ssid and security setup.. simple to the point of trivial.
Roaming I must add is perfect in theory.. in practice stuff doesn't always swap "towers" the way you idealize.. it stays stuck to the poorer signal when a better one is right next to it.
That is the nature of wifi. A voodoo technology.. 80% black arts. and 50% science.. (in voodoo it has poor maths).

  • Can I create two separate wireless networks?

At this time I am using my own wireless router Netgear WNDR3700. Works well.
I would like to add second router (Dlink DIR825) but not as repeater or access point.
Can I connect both directly to to Cat 6 coming from OMT thru the Ethernet switch creating 2 separate networks?
With its own SSID's and use the second network to connect in the garage where my signal is week from the netgear. Is it possible?

Somebody on this forum a few weeks back said this could be done.
If it can it would be a violation of your TOS as for it to work you would havve to be acquiring two dhcp addresses from the VZ network.
Tech support told me that installation of router downstram of ActionTec router does not violate TOS. It merely remove Verizon support & ActionTec's router from the loop for Internet services, and of course its no longer Verizon's problem should any problems arise on the installed router or it's network (CAUTION: this is done at your own risk). In theory that could be hardwired or wireless. Those services which retain connection from the ONT to Verizon's ActionTec router will similarly retain viable Verizon responsibility and FIOs support.
I don't think he's connecting his router to a VZ router.
I think he's suggesting connecting a switch directly to the ONT and then 2 routers to the switch.  That will give him 2 VZ DHCP addresses

  • How to Create a Separate N and G Network?

I have been reading post after post, and none of them gives enough explicit detail for me to figure this out. I want to create 2 separate networks in my home, one just 802.11n the other 802.11g. The n is for internet and time capsule with my MacBook Pro, the g for my iPhone. I have a Time Capsule, an Airport Express and a DSL modem.
Right now I have the DSL modem connected to the TC and it set for 802.11n only @ 5 Ghz. The Airport Express is connected via an ethernet cable to the TC. What settings must I change in the Airport Express "Manual Setup" section to ensure no problems?
I have heard of turning of DHCP and something about SSID. I have no idea what those are. I have a static IP address from AT&T.
    Thanks so much!

I've read a number of posts on this topic and also read the TC manual. I am still having a problem getting this to work so I am hoping someone can provide a step by step based on the following info:
I have a cable modem connected to the TC using ethernet.
I want my Macbook Air and Apple TV to connect to the TC wirelessly at 5Mhz. I called the TC "Home_5Mhz" with WPA2 Personal active.
I have a b/g AEBS connected to the TC using ethernet. I called the AEBS "Home" with WPA2 Personal active.
I want to connect my iPhone, iMac G5 and Powerbook G4 wirelessly to the AEBS b/g network.
I want all of my devices to have access to the Internet at the highest speed possible without degrading 802.11n performance on the TC.
The problem I'm having: Access to the Internet from the iMac, Macbook Air, and Apple TV is sporadic. Sometimes it works, most of the time is doesn't. The TC is set to find a channel automatically; the AEBS is using Channel 11. The two computers seem to recognize the TC as a storage device and I can back up to it. It is very slow backing up the iMac G5's full 250gb hard drive (supposed to be, right?). It's the Internet connection that doesn't appear to be working consistently. By that I mean I get the Safari web page saying that I'm not connected to the Internet (page with Diagnostic button). Running Diagnostics has not resolved the problem. I have tried resetting both the TC and AEBS to factory specs and starting from scratch but the problem persists.
I'm pretty sure it's just a simple setting I have yet to identify, I just can't figure out which one it is. Currently the AEBS is in bridge mode allowing b/g devices to connect to the Internet. "n" devices cannot most of the time unless I change the AEBS from bridge mode to share an IP address. Then I can connect the "n" devices but I think it's happening via the AEBS not the TC.
Any suggestions or step by step info (link?) would be greatly appreciated and I offer my thanks in advance.

  • Can I create 2 Wireless Networks off of a FIOS Router?

    Hi,
I expect to be getting Verizon FIOS within the next month. I will be splitting it with my brother as we live in a two family house, me one one side and him and his family on the other. We will have Internet, TV and Phone. We are looking to split the Internet and TV throughout the house to his side and my side. We already have Verizon as our phone carrier so we will be keeping our phonenumbers. Splitting the TV shouldn't be hard as we just need to connect my current cable line and his current cable line to the Splitter Verizon will be providing us.
The question I have is in regards to the Internet. Since we will be having TV I'm sure I need a coax connection from the ONT to the FIOS Router. What we would like to do is one of the following scenarios if possible, starting with what we really want first.  Note that all scenarios will include us disabling wireless on the FIS Router as we want out routers to provide the wireless.
    1. We would like to connect 2 wireless routers to the FIOS Router to create 2 different wired/wireless networks based on the one FIOS Internet connection. Each connection will have its own SSID broadcast name (one for my side of the home and one for his side of the home). Is this as simple as connecting both routers' WAN ports via Cat-6 cable to seperate LAN ports on the FIOS Router? I would then disable wireless on the FIOS Router. I read somewhere that in order to do this, FIOS must offer 2 dynamic IP addresses. I was told this can be done with Time Warner Cable since it allows for 2 Dynamic IP Addresses. I would just have to connect a switch to the cable modem first. So, does FIOS offer 1 or 2 dynamic IP addresses? Regardless if FIOS offers 1 or 2 dynamic IP addresses, can I do what I want to do? If so, how? How would I set up the two routers? I imagine I would have to change the LAN IP addresses of the routers to something like 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.2.1 (since the FIOS Router is 192.168.1.1).  Anything else need to be done? Do I disable DHCP in the FIOS Router? Any help with this set up would be greatly appreciated.
    2. If the above scenario cannot be achieved I was thinking of connecting my 1st wireless router to the FIOS Router via the WAN port on my 1st wirelsss router to a LAN port on the FIOS Router. Then I would connect my 2nd wireless router's WAN port to a LAN port  on the 1st wireless router.  I would then disable wireless on the FIOS Router.  Do I disable DHCP in the FIOS Router?  The settings would be below:
    1st router:
-WAN/Uplink/Internet port plugged into FIOS Router
    -LAN port/wireless as follows
    Internal IP: 192.168.0.1
    subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
    DHCP pool: 192.168.0.50 to .254
    2nd router:
-Wan uplink port into LAN port of 1st router
    -LAN port/wireless as follows
    Interla IP: 192.168.2.1
    subnet mask 255.255.255.0
    DHCP pool: 192.168.1.50 to .254
This way  the subnets are different and I have 2 different networks.  I can set up 2 different SSIDs.  I believe this set up will result in double-NAT however.  Would this be an issue?
    3. Lastly, if none of the above scenarios can be achieved, I was thinking of just using 1 SSID for the whole house.  I would connect my 1st wireless router's WAN port to a LAN port on the FIOS Router.  I would then connect a LAN port from the 2nd wireless router to a LAN port on the 1st wireless router.  Then I would disable DHCP on the 2nd wireless router so that is acts as a wireless access point.  I would change the LAN IP address of my 1st router to 192.168.1.2 and the 2nd router to 192.168.1.3 (since the FIOS Router is 192.168.1.1).  I would set up wireless and security the same on both routers.    I would then disable wireless on the FIOS Router.  Do I disable DHCP in the FIOS Router?  With this setup, will the 2nd router (wireless access point) only be a wireless access point or can I also connect devices to the router's LAN ports?
I know I may not have everything correct in the scenarios.  Will any of these scenarios work?  If not, what can I do to achieve my goal?  If so, then what must I change in a scenario to make it work properly?
I will need to do Port Forwarding for a Slingbox and 5 IP cameras, so how difficult would that be with the best scenarios?
Sorry for the long drawn out post, but I figured I give as much info as I could.
Thanks for the help in advance,
    Chris

Yup, this is the easiest way to create two separate networks. There is no need for more than one IP address from Verizon as long each router runs in NAT mode.  NAT mode will also keep each network completely separate - no sharing of resources will occur between them.  Double NAT is not a problem in most cases.

  • Need to create a Separate Wifi Network @ Office

At my small biz, I have AT&T (formerly Bellsouth) High Speed DSL...  Runs into a Motorla DSL Modem for the Internet connection, then to a Cisco PIX for our Firewall.  I can hang an Airport off the network, but our iOS devices can't pull Exchange Email if connected to the wifi.
So I'd like to hang the Airport off the DSL Modem... I first tried with an old Airport Express, wifi network was fine, but couldn't get Internet no matter how I set it up.  The DSL Modem is making the connection, but I'm unsure how I create the Separate Wifi Network with the Airport connected directly to it.
I'm going to use a Time Capsule A1254 rather than the Airport Express... a little direction would certainly help.
    Thanks!  Scott

The Motorola is a Netopia 3347-02-1022 gateway device.  We do authenticate with PPPoE, which is being managed on the 3347.  We have a static IP, the PIX gets the internet from the 3347, our domain controller handles DHCP.
I assume that you are getting a single static Public IP address from your ISP and that is is "applied" to the 3347 gateway's WAN interface ... correct? I am also assuming that the 3347 is handling the NAT service with your DC handling DHCP for the issuance of Private IP addresses on the local network.
The AirPorts are consumer-grade routers and do not offer any VLAN functionality ... other than the Guest network feature of the 802.11n Extremes and Time Capsules. As such, any VLAN-type network "subnetting" would not be possible. At best, you can enable NAT & DHCP in combination to allow the wired/wireless networks behind the AirPort's NAT to have a different Private IP address range. Note: There is no option to disable DHCP separately with the AirPorts. You basically have three options: 1) NAT & DHCP enabled, 2) NAT disabled & DHCP enabled, or 3) Both NAT & DHCP disabled. These options are controlled with the Connection Sharing option on the Internet Connection tab of the AirPort Utility.

  • HT2421 If I attach a hard drive to the USB port, can I access it from the wired network, while simultaneously creating a separate wifi network with NO access to the hard drive?

I already have a wireless network (call it Network A) with connectivity to various wired and wireless devices.  I have a USB hard drive that I directly attach to my MacBook Air.  I use it for Time Machine backups and general storage.  I would like to move this drive to an AirPort Extreme.  I would like to continue to be able to reach it via Network A, but also use the AirPort to create a guest Network (Network B).  I don't want the guest network to access the hard drive.
Now, I know I can plug a hub into the USB port and put (I hear up to 3) hard drives on it.  Can I determine which ones are accessable by Network A, and by Network B?
    Bonzo...

    Several things to consider.
You cannot create a wireless network for guests if the AE is bridged. It has to be the main router in the network.
You cannot use the existing TM backups on the USB drive.. if you plug into a network it will need to be wiped.. and only AC model can produce reliable TM backups.. the earlier models are not reliable for TM backups.
    See http://pondini.org/TM/Airport.html
These two factors alone may be enough to make you reconsider.
If you can create a guest network.. and you can overcome the limitations of airdisks.. then any person on the guest network should not be able to access the disk drive.. but if you wish to go ahead Bob Timmons might be able to confirm it.. I stay away from USB drives on routers.. I do not and will not use a router as a NAS.. it is underpowered and simply unsuitable long term.. a cheap single disk NAS is many times faster.. more reliable.. and has a marvellous thing called backup.. no USB disk or even internal disk in a TC can back itself up. .nor can TM backup network drives.. so any data you store on a USB drive is going to be gone one day.. unless you go to great lengths to back it up .. to where.. another USB drive plugged into another router somewhere.. the definition of slow.. should be copying files between two usb drives in an apple network using wireless. You will experience new levels of pain and suffering.. likened to the belly of the Sarlacc.

  • Creating a Separate Wireless Network With no Ethernet

    Hello-
I am attempting to set-up my Airport Express with my receiver and speakers in order to play music wirelessly. I have successfully done so when I choose "Join an Existing Wireless network", but I have noticed that this bogs down my wi-fi network speeds tremendously.
So, instead, I attempted setting-up the Airport Express as its own wireless network in order to bypass my DSL-based, wi-fi network completely. But, when doing so, I am being forced to connect to my DSL via ethernet.
Is there a way arpund this? Or, is there a way to stream music via the airport express in a way that won't interfere with my DSL wi-fi network (or affect its speed)?
    Thanks in advance!

The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) does NOT require an Internet connection in order for it to provide a standalone wireless network for streaming.
The AX would not get a Public IP address, but it would have a Private IP address of 10.0.1.1 ... and it would be providing wireless clients connected to it with Private IP addresses in the 10.0.1.2 - 10.0.1.200 range.
I just verified that this works. Please double-check your settings to see if you may have missed something.
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name: <enter a desired Network Name or SSID>
Radio Mode: <leave the default or select a desired radio mode>
    Channel: Automatic
Wireless Security: <select the desired wireless security type>
    Internet > Internet Connection
    Connect Using: Ethernet
Connection Sharing: Distribute a range of IP addresses
    Internet > TCP/IP
    Configure IPv4: Manually
    IP Address: 10.0.1.1
    Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
    Router Address: 10.0.1.1
    DNS Server(s): <leave blank>
    Domain Name: <leave blank>
    Internet > DHCP
DHCP Beginning Address: <leave default or change to a desired starting address>
DHCP Ending Address: <leave default or change to a desired ending address>
    Music
    Enable AirTunes (checked>
iTunes Speaker Name: <leave default or enter a desired speaker name>
    Advanced > Logging & Statistics
    Allow SNMP (unchecked)
Your AX will still report at least three errors: 1) Configuration of WAN, 2) SNMP over WAN, and 3) Double NAT. These can all be safely ignored to stop the AX's status light from flashing amber in this configuration.

  • Help Creating a Roaming Network w Sonos

    Hi all,
I have a networked 2 story and 1 separated cabana room.  The smart panel DAS doesnt work - so I have the Comcast cable modem with 100 Mbps Service in the smart panel (SP) connected to a Netgear Bridge, and the networked cables to the rooms I need connected to the bridge.
    Here is my current configuration:
    SP to Netgear Bridge
4 Network Cables from Bridge to: Master Bedroom (Airport Extreme N as my base), Office, Living Room, Cabana Room (Cabana room is 60 ft away from main apartment, and 60 ft, 1 floor below, and 1 60 x 20 patio away from AEBS)
19 WiFi devices actively on network
Sonos system running off Mac Mini in Office off WiFi from AEBS, Speaker in Living Room and Speaker in Cabana Room
Cabana Room speaker disconnects frequently from Sonos as the WiFi seems to get lost traveling across the 60 x 20 patio
No internet in Cabana Room - which is a critical issue as I commonly work out there and PS3 is there
I tried to setup a completely separate network - but there are 2 issues with that....I commonly dropped my connection because one or the other would be stronger and it just wasnt working...the second is the Sonos speakers need to be on the same network.  I have tried extending the network - but the signal ***** and cant hold a VPN connection, much less even attempt to play PS3.  I have connected the network in the wall to the Airport Express and used the same network name - and I lost all connectivity for 24 hours and somehow completely disabled my Comcast phone service forever - I am assuming because of conflicting IP addresses/NAT issues.
I have 2 Netgear Powerline adapters and an Airport Express in my arsenal.  Because the networked rooms are not coming from the AEBS, but from the bridge in the SP - I am guessing that if I use the powerline adapters (one from AEBS) to run a network cable to the Airport Express might be the way to go - but before I muff anything up again and have to create a whole new network - I would like advice.
Confused yet?   Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Time Capsule and Airport Express as separate network on route acting slow

Wonder if anyone has any thoughts on this...
I have a Time Capsule (current gen) with an Airport Express N (last gen) which I would like to connect to my current router and create a network that is separate from the router's own wireless network. Currently, I've set the TC to work in Bridge Mode (connected to the router - ethernet) and have connected the Airport Express to 'extend the network' - this is also in Bridge Mode as well. However, when I'm away from the TC and in the Airport Express's range, the connection is very slow. Is there something I'm not doing right with the 2 Apple products or is it something with the router? When I'm closer to the TC it works fine, it's just when I'm far away there seems to be an issue!
    Thanks in advance!

Wirelessly extending your network will improve your range, but decrease your bandwidth. You should create a roaming network via Ethernet if you can.

  • Using two wireless routers for two separate networks

I have one WRT54G router and a newly purchased E2000 router that replaced the WRT54G . I have one DSL connection coming into the house.
I have the DSL going directly into my main E2000 router which runs my existing wireless home network and it does this wonderfully. My son wanted the older WRT54G router to create his own network where he has it set up for his own purposes so I gave it to him. He has everything set up to where we have two functioning networks that do not conflict which is great however he ran an Ethernet cable from the e2000 to the WRT54G to make this happen. This cable is a problem since it basically is about 50 feet of ugly cable running up my stairs to his room. Is there a way to have the routers still work in tandem as they are now to manage two separate networks but to instead have them connected wirelessly and eliminate the existing wired setup?

You would need a third party firmware like DDWRT to do that (it will void the warranty too)
Or you need a wireless bridge like the WET54G or WAP54G set to bridged mode

  • Create second wifi network with WRT54GL?

I have DSL with a Comtrend router/wifi (WIFI1).  I would like to connect the WRT54GL to the physical network and have it create a separate wifi network (WIFI2), so my laptop will connect to WIFI2, get passed to the LAN and on to the Internet.
Cant make this work - tried setting up the WRT for DHCP server, DHCP passthrough (to the comtrend), and the best I can do is get connected to WIFI2 and have access to the LAN but not the Internet.
Ultimately I want to put a high gain antenna on the WRT to make it reach another building about 400' away and do away with comtrends horrible WIFI, but I cant get to first base.  Can anyone help?
    thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You can set it up this way: comtrend as main router with Wifi1 and DHCP enabled then connect the Linksys wireless router with its DHCP disabled and with Wifi2. Example, if IP Address of the first router is 192.168.1.1, set the Linksys IP Address to 192.168.1.2 and both will be connected via LAN-LAN or Ethernet to Ethernet. Check this link and read the LAN-LAN setup http://kb.linksys.com/Linksys/ukp.aspx?vw=1&docid=785463d9ecaf4cac84aed245b08d615f_3733.xml&pid=80&r...
. I suggest also that before you disable the DHCP server on the Linksys router you set up first its wireless settings.

  • Legato - creating two separate logs

    Hi,
We are using Legato Networker with Oracle (running on Solaris). I need to find a way to generate TWO separate reports. One for archive logs backups and the other for the actual database backups.
I am using the NSR_RMAN_ARGUMENTS within /usr/sbin/nsrnmo_<ORACLE_SID> file which refers to a file that will store the rman report. However, when archivelogs backup occurs it will overwrite the last database backup. What I need is two report files - one for database and the other for archivelogs.
Is there a way to create two separate reports?
    Many thanks

    Hi,
It might be that you have to run two jobs, one to back the database and the other to backup the archives.

  • How to create a private network for OCFS2 in OVS 2.2.1

Does anyone know how to create a separate netwok for ocfs2 and leave the regular vm traffic on the main network.
    I have done the following
    - configured 3 vm servers connected fia fibre channel to a SAN
    - Bonded 2 network cards on each server to provide 1 bridge on each. (172 network)
    - Installed a 3rd network card in each server and configured on a 10 network with a separate switch.
so my servers are called bart, lisa, flanders
I can communicate between them effectively and the VM manager on a different server can talk to them all.
    I have also configured entries for bart2, lisa2, flanders2
which are on the 10 network. I can ping and talk between these successfully.
I can't however configure the cluster.conf to use the bart2, lisa2, flanders2 as it has a problem with the names not matching the local name of the machine.
Im not sure if changing the server name will affect the VM agent.

Basically, Oracle VM uses the IP address you specify when adding the Oracle VM server to configure OCFS2 and Live
Migration. So you should use the private ip when adding the server.
Then, the "regular" VM guests network traffic will be on the network/bridge/bond the guest itself belongs to.
