I have taken backup of user Home directory in LTO3 tapedrive using the "tar"command.
While restoring the backup data under a particular directory using "tar xvf"command,the data is getting extracted.
But after extraction there is no data available under that restored directory.

So far as I can see your tar xvf /dev/rmt/0 -c /restoration dir is invalid syntax!
The c (or -c) is used to create an archive, so allied wit the -x to extract you have a confl;ict.
There is a -C option, but that is just for the -c (create) and -r (replace) commands.
If you want to just extract a single file or directory from the archive use:
tar xvf /dev/rmt/0 /original/directory/nameSo, as an example, if you have /export/home as a directory and (let's say) 40 users (called user01 to user40) with home directories under there and had archived it with:
tar cf /dev/rmt/0 /export/homeYou could get back just the home directory for user20 with:
tar xvf /dev/rmt/0 /export/home/user20

I've been searching for weeks for a solution to my problem. Here's the story I've come across since I installed Leopard on Oct. 26, 2007.
I first installed Leopard on my Early 2006 MacBook and set up Time Machine with a 200GB external FireWire drive. Since then, things have been fine, until Time Machine started deleting the oldest backups. I'm a pack-rat and hated this feeling of losing data. So, I now have a few months worth of backups on my 200GB FireWire drive.
The Time Capsule is released, I finally talk myself into getting one and transferring my old data from the 200GB drive to my 1TB TC.
I did some researching through forums about how to move data from one Time Machine drive to another, so I took the concept and wanted to apply it to my Time Capsule. I made a DMG image of my 200GB drive, in order to move the data. I figured if I can make an image, copy it, and open it on the Time Capsule - all will go smoothly - just as some had mentioned they've done with external drives.
Now, I have a 164GB DMG image of my Time Machine, with no hope in sight of gaining it back. I've tried taking the image, using Disk Utility, and restoring my original 200GB external with the imaged Time Machine data, but whenever I do, I come across error messages.
In Disk Utility, I've done the following steps:
* Disk Image is found on Time Capsule
* I select the 200GB drive and select 'Restore'
* I drag and drop the Disk Image to the 'Image' field
* I drag and drop the 200GB drive into the the 'Restore' field
* Select 'Erase Destination'
* Select 'Restore'
* I get the warning message that I'll erase the drive - I proceed
* I enter my password
Error message pops up:
"Restore Failure: Could not find any scan information. The source image needs to be imagescanned/scanned for restore."
I select the image in Disk Utility, then proceed with the following steps:
* Click on "Image" then down to "Scan Image for Restore"
* I enter my password
After hours of waiting, I get another error message:
"Unable to scan. (Broken pipe)."
I'm going to see, after transferring the DMG to the Time Capsule, if I can drag-and-drop the files from the Time Capsule drive onto the 200GB hard drive.
IF anyone has any more suggestions, please let me know!

32 updates on this Mac since December 2007 - Hardware, software, OS...
They keep coming at about 6 or 7 a month. Some of them I don't care about, but several are essential. 10.5.3 has been seeded to the testers a couple of times and will probably show up in the next few weeks. Jaguar wasn't worth a d*mn until 10.2.6, Panther about 10.3.4, Tiger about 10.4.4 - I'd say we are ahead or on schedule Too bad I can't get Apple to fix Spaces. I wish they'd focus on what I want but I guess some take more time than others.

Restore from tape : how we can find out out restore speed in MBs? and how to check if there are any bottlenecks/slow speed and what are things to adjust to increase its speed.

With rman the backup of only the data will be transfered to tape so an almost empty 2g datafile will be faster than a full 2g datafile.
To actually measure the speed you should time a backup to tape and with <list backup;> get information about the amount of data transfered.
Than time the restore this will give you an idea.
Depending on your hardware allocating more channels in the rman command can improve performance.
You could also check the backup system documentation for helpful information to measure/improve the speed.

RMAN Backup Restore from tape

We have lvl0 RMAN database backup restored from tape but due to some reasons we could not apply recovery on it. On checking the information in controlfile, it identified only the system file and no other file. So, we recreated the controlfile and decided to recover using backup controlfile option (until cancel or until change or until time). However, to my surprise, when I listed the checkpointchange# and checkpoint_time columns of v$datafile_header, I found the difference in timestamps ranging 24 hrs -- which menat we had to apply 24 hrs of archiving to bring all dbfs to a consistent state (before it allowed us to open the db) -- so far so good, it worked that way.
My question is that, while I trigger a lvl0 RMAN backup at say 4PM on 27th July and it finishes on 4PM on 28th July (as I am directly pushing around 1 TB data to tapes) -- what is the consistency timestamp of this backup. In other words, is this backup available for a restore of 4PM 27th July? Or is it available only for a restore of 4PM 28th July and later ...?
Isn't it that RMAN works at block level and when I fire a backup it should give me all the dbf's of that timestamp..?

When taking a online backup with RMAN, the datafiles backup is always inconsistent because it needs the archived redo logs generated during the backup to be consistent: http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14192/intro005.htm#sthref70.
A full online backup can only be used to restore the database to a point in time starting after backup end: if a backup starts at 4PM on 27th July and it finishes on 4PM on 28th July you can use it to restore the database to a point in time after 28-JUL 4PM.

They are careful to say they are not officially providing a backup service, but when I emailed them with a query regarding usage about a year ago after downloading Silverkeeper for myself, I got a reply within a couple of days that cleared up my question.

Time machine restore from network drive kernel panic

I had a late 2013 macbook pro 15" retina, I was backing up with time machine to a network drive (western digital my cloud). All of my backups are there and the data looks valid. In April I ended up selling the macbook pro, then recently I bought another one and attempted to restore from the network drive.
I chose the option to restore on boot from network device, it properly detects and lets me browse my previous backups. I choose restore, the restore will run for a few hours and then reboot with a kernel panic.
panic(cpu 0 caller 0xffffff00184c0ac1): "Unable to find driver for this platform: \"ACPI\".\n"0/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2422.90.20/iokit/Kernel/IOPlatformExpert.cpp: 1541"
I've tried a few different backups, one from April, one from march...both result in the same error. Any ideas why this would happen?

Time Machine full system restores only work if the backup disk doesn't need drivers separate from Mac OS X to mount. To make a long story short, you CAN'T do a full system restore with the disk your backups are on.

Problem restoring from tape a backup with different retention days

As part of our procedure to test data restore for the SAP platform, recently we tried to restore a backup of the QAS SAP database from tape but had problems . During the analysis we think this problem happened because the retention of the backup on tape differs from the one in the configuration of SAP initSID.utl file; originally, the backup was made to a virtual tape using the brbackup tool /expiration parameter of 3 days, then cloned to a physical tape with a longer retention (30 days).
As a temporary solution to restore the data, we extended the u2018expirationu2019 parameter in the brbackup/brrestore configuration file (.utl) and since we still had the logs of the original backup (.anf file), we were able to complete the restore succesfully. We then changed back to the original the expiration time in the .utl file
We need to run the restore option in Production (PRO) environment but still we are not sure if this workaround is acceptable. Does anyone know if this option is correct or if thereu2019s another known solution for this case

Dear All,
We are in the process of testing the restore functionality of our production Db. The Backup is taken by Rman which is integrated with Netbackp. The backup files are directly going to the Tape storage.
Scenario
1. We need to restore the backup into a different host which doesn't have access to the Netbackup server and Production Db (Its a DR site)(DR excercise).
2. System team can provide the tape on the standby server.
Concerns
1. How can i proceed with restore in the secondary host.
2. Is there any way to read the backup pieces from Tape and catalog it using rman
If any come across this scenario, kindly share me the solution.

If it is a NETBACKUP device, you can't restore without NETBACKUP. Well, there have been articles written on howto, but they all seem to end in "I just installed netbackup, imported the tape and restored from there."
I NEVER, EVER backup directly to tape - always to disk - most frequently with enough space to store 2 full backups plus enough archivelog file space to span before and after those backups, then sweep the backup location to tape. Recovering from tape can take 50-150% longer. If you use NETBACKUP, install it where it is needed. Going "cheap" could potentially cost the company more in downtime, than the licenses would have costs. If you NEED data, you NEED licenses to run the tools required to recover from a disaster.
The sad part is that should a catastrophic failure occur, it is usually at the most inopportune time.
Companies should treat their data [required to run their business] with the same security and backup strategies as if it was cash in the bank. I have seen a very large company literally throw away over $8M in unrecoverable orders due to impatience with bringing a system back online and not allowing the proper recovery processes to occur. Not having the proper licenses would fall into this category. Can your company afford to lose $8M in income?
Sounds like your company really needs a Business Continuity Review of your DR processes and procedures.

How do I restore from external drive, with outdated back-up software?

I mistakenly kept using my LaCie external drive's Silver keeper softerware after upgrading my Mac OS. My SilverKeeper version is 1.1.2, which I now know is incompatible with my Mac 10.4.6. (Maybe that is why I got an error report when I
ran the Mac diagnostic disk on the LaCie.) In any event, after suffering a major crash (Kernal attack, and resulting reformat of the hard drive), I am wondering how to attempt a restore from the LaCie. Should I try it with the software that actually created the LaCie back up that I have; or should I reinstall the appropriate version of SilverKeeper first?
I have been plugging along with some CD back-ups of the LaCie, but this is quite frustrating since it has to be done manually. Is it possible to download an upgrade to the back-up disk directly? And if so, would this really help matters?
As you can see, I'm really a bit of an idiot about these matters; so any ANY help will be most appreciated.

Speed up restore from tape

The restore from the tape runs always slow and use only one channel everytime. Is there any way we can speed up the restore using parallellism. Please suggest.
FYI - We are not using the RMAN catalog.

Restore from External Drive

A while back my HDD died and in the meantime I just connected an external drive and ran OS X from that. Now I have a new HDD installed in my iMac and I would like to restore everything from my external. How can I do this? I tried going to Disk Utility and making a disk image but it would not let me. What is the best way to restore?

don't make any disk images. first reformat the internal drive using disk utility. make sure the format is mac os extended journaled and the partition scheme is GUID if your mac is intel and APM it's PPC. your profile says G5 imac intel. there is no such creature. G5 means PPC. so find out what you really have and partition accordingly.
then use the restore tab in disk utility to restore your external drive to the internal. check the box to erase destination.

Restoring from firewire drive

Here's my situation. I just bought a new Macbook Air as a replacement for a stolen Macbook Pro. My Time Machine backup drive was a LeCie firewire drive. As the Air doesn't have a firewire connection, how can I restore from my backup on to my new Air? FYI, I do have another MacBook Pro from work that I could utilize. Primarily, I will want to restore my music and pictures, as well as a few documents.

You can open your time machine backup on your macbook pro and restore only the files you need, then use a sd card, network connection, pen drive or external hd to transfer them to the air.

I need help in restoring data recovered from hard drive crash to new hard drive

I have the data that was recovered by a recovery service (long story) from my wife's hard drive after it crashed, which is now stored on my computer. There are two user data sets that have been recovered, one for each of us. I need to put each on my wife's computer with its new hard drive, which now has OSX 10.10.? (Yosemite) on it.
My wife's computer was running OSX 10.7 (Lion) when the hard drive failed and my computer is still running OSX 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard).
I was told that I should use the Data Transfer Utility (starting my computer up while holding the "T" key), but I have forgotten what I have to do when I start up her computer. Are there any operating system compatibility problems that are sensitive to this process?

That is a Microsoft Windows question?? You should probably ask this question on Microsoft's Forums. BTW there is no "Windows 9". Only Windows 7, Windows 8 and apparently MS is skipping the number 9 in favor of 10.

How to restore from hard drive that won't boot?

My Macbook Pro recently started hanging at the grey boot screen, and the hard drive was replaced under Applecare. I've got the old hard drive in a USB enclosure now, and everything on it seems to be readable despite it refusing to boot from this hard drive. Disk utility reports no problems. Is there a way to restore the files and applications from the old hard drive onto the new hard drive? I presume I can't just make a new time machine backup from the old hard drive and restore that?
